15 Essential Chinese Restaurants to Try Around Atlanta

"Devotees of chef Peter Chang are regulars to this beloved Chinese restaurant, which now resides on Powers Ferry Road. And for many longtime Atlantans, Tasty China is where they first fell in love with Sichuan cuisine. Head here for classic hot and numbing Sichuan dishes, including dry-fried eggplant and tofu, cumin lamb, and braised fish in red chili oil. The menu includes a few American-Chinese dishes, too, like General Tso’s chicken and Mongolian beef." - Beth McKibben

New Brewery Opening Near Marietta Square This Summer - Eater Atlanta

"It seems the popular Szechuan restaurant Tasty China is headed back to Sandy Springs. Tomorrow’s News Today reported, Dahe Yang (owner of Jia in Ponce City Market) has secured a spot in the Fountain Oaks complex on Roswell Road next to the Mediterranean restaurant Cafe Posh. Yang hopes to open in May. The original Sandy Springs location for Tasty China II was located on Powers Ferry Road. It closed in 2014." - Beth McKibben

If you’re looking for authentic Sichuan cuisine, this restaurant is a must-visit! The dishes are incredibly spicy and full of bold, numbing flavors—just like true Sichuan food should be. Every bite is packed with that signature kick that spice lovers will absolutely enjoy. The environment is also great, with two spacious floors that make it perfect for group dinners or gatherings. Their lunch specials are super affordable, and they even come with rice and a hot soup, which makes it a fantastic deal. I’ve already recommended this place to several friends, and everyone loved it. Highly recommended!

Google
We received good service for lunch. My General Tso's Chicken wasn't edible. The sauce was great but the chicken was tough and had a weird texture. The dishes my friends had were of average taste and quality. The eggplant appetizer was delicious. Not a place I'd return to.

Google
Delicious, authentic Chinese food!!! Easily the best in the area by far. Relaxing, clean, stylish atmosphere too. And we appreciate the servers, like Michelle and Sylvia. My mom and I have been coming here for years and bringing friends too. Today my mom told Sylvia that she loves ginger and cilantro and our dish arrived with generous portions of both fresh seasonings. Sylvia is so smart and sweet and so is Michelle.

Unfortunately, my family didn’t like the food here. The restaurant looks nice and the music is great but the service was slow and the food didn’t taste fresh!! my sister salmon fried rice smelt very fishy and she found a piece of hair in it😕!!…Had high hopes for this place but we won’t be returning.

Google
It’s a reasonable option if you’re looking for Chinese food with generous portions and fair prices. The dishes are well-served, making them great for sharing or taking leftovers home. Plus, the service is quick. However, the flavor could be better in some dishes. While the food is tasty, the seasoning isn’t always perfectly balanced, and some dishes can be a bit too spicy. Overall, it’s a good spot if you’re looking for large portions at a fair price, but if you’re very particular about flavor, it might not always meet expectations.

Google
I walked into this restaurant hoping for a warm meal and an even warmer atmosphere, but sadly, I was met with neither. There was no welcoming energy, just a quiet, lifeless space and a staff that seemed equally drained. My server didn’t greet me when approaching the table. When I initiated with a friendly “Hello, how are you?”, she flatly replied, “Tired.” That set the tone for the rest of the visit. The food arrived lukewarm and lacked flavor, depth, or any sense that care or love had gone into it. The overall energy in the restaurant felt heavy and uninspired — it genuinely affected my mood. Unfortunately, this isn’t a place I’ll be supporting again. There are too many vibrant, heart-filled restaurants here to return to one that left me feeling so empty. I had the bang bang shrimp, veggie fried rice, and scallion bubble pancake.

Google
I was looking for good late-night takeout Chinese food and stumbled upon this restaurant. The restaurant itself was empty and had a slight off-putting odor when we arrived. However, we were promptly greeted and able to place our order quickly. The food took about 20 minutes to prepare and smelled fantastic. We ordered lo mein, dumplings, and two different kinds of pork. The house lo mein was extremely tasty, with thick noodles and a rich, flavorful sauce, and the portion size was generous. The pork dishes, however, were just okay—slightly dry and with an unusual texture. Overall, I’d recommend this place as a solid late-night option, but I’d probably skip the pork dishes next time.

Google
Great food - two families dined together and the food portions and quality were very good. Service was very slow and lacking. We got the bamboo fish (fantastic), sichuan fish in hot oil, chicken with scallions, chicken fried rice. All were on point and had authentic flavor. Will recommend to anyone looking for a good meal (and has more time on their hands as service was very slow and also at times, absent)

Yelp
So delicious I love my shrimp fried roman very flavorful. For sure I will order again soon. The service was good. We have to wait for long time but the food was great so that's ok and the Waitress so kind very polite. The place have Musi no to loud was very clean. I will be back.

Yelp
Tasty China has moved locations a couple of times. It had a longstanding reputation for outstanding food coupled with subpar service. Their new Powers Ferry location stays on brand. We showed as a group of 6 and were seated relatively promptly for lunch. It took about 15 minutes to get someone to take an order from us. And that only occurred after we asked 3 different employees that we're ready to order. The lunch special menu is actually a decent deal, and most of us ordered from there. Sizable portions. The eggplant and spicy garlic sauce was indeed tasty, though I should note that these portion sizes are ideally consumed family style. So if people have an idea as to what they're willing to share amongst each other, that could provide for an even better meal. I thought it was funny that their bar had napkins with the FLIP Burger boutique brand logo on them. Not judging. Just funny. Note that, given our party size, the tip was automatically included. That was not transparent when we were paying the bill. I wish they had provided that color (or at least the full receipt) in advance.

Yelp
I got the dan dan noodles. I do wish the portion size was larger but it's listed under dim sum so I guess it's not meant to be a full meal? But they should have an option to have you get a larger size for people who want to have it as a full meal. I did not find the dan dan noodles spicy or numbing at all. I'm not the biggest fan of the numbing feeling so its' fine but it definitely could've been a lot spicier. The sauce was very tasty but way too salty in my opinion. I really like the atmosphere of this restaurant. Everything is very modern looking and I think the lights are really cool! Also love the giant windows. Our server was really funny and nice and checked up on us often! I'm not sure if this is some place I'd come again, I'd come and try a different one of their dishes maybe, but it didn't really leave a big enough impression on me to want to come here again if I wanted Chinese food

Yelp
What's better than a warm cup of wonton soup on a wintry day? That's the first thing I ordered at Tasty China on my first visit. I noticed a new location/new build and made a mental note to try it the next time I was in the mood for Chinese food. It was a solid visit, which makes me pleased to give five stars on my final review of 2023! First, I noticed right away the 100 A rating for its latest health inspection score. That made me feel confident about our visit. By the way, there was a sign out front indicating Tasty China had been in business for 18 years, but it's new to me. The menu was robust - thank goodness our waitress was patient because it took me a moment to decide what to try beyond the wonton soup. I settled upon chicken and broccoli with steamed rice. It's such a healthy portion I have enough for 1-2 meals at home. It's a super casual, clean vibe. You'd expect the latter for a brand new build. I noticed there was an elevator, so I think there may be a top floor for dining. I'm not sure as we were seated in a window booth near the hostess stand. We experienced no wait on a Saturday afternoon., but there was a steady crowd. Parking is easy with the attached lot. It was good enough we'll be back to explore the menu a bit more! Cheers!

Yelp
New location! But has the same great food! I love the bamboo fish! And they make a stirfried, tofu, vegetable dish, that's to die for! I Just discovered their upstairs viewing area that will be nice in the summer right now it's January so it's about 32°! Kind of hard to locate but it's right next to a sign making company They have music playing outside, which is nice while you're waiting for you to go order! Will definitely return again and again! Are used to order and go to their old location, which was off of Atlanta Road... Really kind of a scary location to tell you the truth! I'm so glad they change location! I feel so much safer here

Yelp
We came here on a Friday afternoon for lunch. We got seated right away and service was quick. Reasonably priced and our meals arrived quick and were tasty. I'll definitely be back for lunch

Yelp
JUST OPENED!! (re-located from the old location which is 5 min away). this hits the spot if you're craving chinese food. great location, just off the 75/285. beautiful decor. still more to come... stay tuned for the outdoor rooftop bar/seating! E X P E R I E N C E we came on a friday night at 8pm. there were 5 parties ahead of us. the front desk lady estimated 15 min wait; we were sat within 20 mins. she was prompt. the restaurant was consistently about 80% full. F O O D shan city beef: it's stir fried beef then breaded. beef falls apart beautifully. not dry or too chewy. flavor is good. cumin lamb: they changed the recipe. still good but not as good as before. before it was fried goodness and super spicy and flavorful. this is a stir fried yumminess. bamboo fish: ugh. just as amazing as before!! my absolute favorite. beautifully light batter. lightly fried. numbing spiciness. NEVER CHANGE THIS. EVER. THIS IS PERFECT. EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. i used to always order their wu gen chang wang (pork intestines) but didn't see it on the menu now. i asked the owner and he said it's hard to procure unfortunately. hopefully he brings it back because it was AMAZING. it was so chewy (texture like boba) and the flavor was perfection. so numbing and with a little spice. this was one of my favorite places to order intestines. S E R V I C E the owner is super nice. very friendly and informative. took the time to chat with us even though he was super busy. mandarin speaking. francis was our waitress. she was very kind and took great care of us. she's attentive and friendly. definitely gave us a few pointers that some of the food would take longer to cook than others. she was quick to bring anything we asked for. ask for francis; she's the bomb! A T M O S P H E R E interior exterior has been renovated. looks so nice and clean! modern contemporary natural design. beautifully bright. great ambiance. they're opening the upstairs outdoor bar area in apr! the owner confirmed that they're will be dancing and fun. we're so excited to come back and see! one area for improvement would be to play some music for ambiance B A R bar area is great for singles or for drinkers. several alcoholic drink options. there's about 6-7 seats available S E A T I N G beautiful caramel brown leather seats. tables are clean, not sticky. good for casual date night, singles, and for families/large groups. T A K E O U T quick! call in to order! at the old location, i used to order take out primarily. within 20 mins, my order would always be ready! P A R K I N G a decent sized 30-40 car parking lot. worst case, can park in neighboring lots. P R I C E each dish is about $20 + 20% tip

Yelp
We came here for lunch as a group during our lunch break. The building itself is really nice, everything was clean, the decor is pretty, and we were seated quickly. Our waitress was nice and took our drink order..but it went downhill from there. Our drinks came out at all different delayed times, rarely got refills unless we begged it it multiple times, soup never came out and then was rushed out in 3 giants bowls for the table we thought was going to spill on us from the lazy Susan or when it was brought over my co workers shoulder, the rice never came out for the individuals so we got family style bowls of both white and fried rice.. it was crazy how long it all took. I ordered orange chicken and asked for it spicy, it wasn't spicy at all so that was missed. It was delicious though, chucks of breast meat and presentation was pretty. The soups were good, wonton, egg drop, and hot and sour. We've had better soups elsewhere but I would order it again without hesitation. One coworker never got her lunch so we had to stop the owner and tell them and it came out soon after. We got there around 11:45 and didn't get to leave until almost 2. Maybe seated service isn't their strong suit but the food itself was really good and we would come back.

Yelp
This is the best Chinese outside of Buford highway in Atlanta. If you don't know that you don't know good Chinese food.
google avatar

Reiko K.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Went in to try them. We were seated promptly and provided menus. Waited for over 15 minutes but no one ever came by or even acknowledged us. We will go to our standby--the Orient--where the food is always delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Went for a pick- up order . Ordered 3 entrees and they missed the one of the rice . The to-go order was packed so horribly -sloppily . One of the lid was not closed properly resulting in leakage. Need I said more?

Yelp
This marks our third and final visit to your new establishment. During our initial experience, we encountered hair in our food, prompting the server to remove the dish from the bill, but inexplicably adding a $17 tip. We hoped this was an isolated incident, but our second visit proved otherwise, as we endured exceptionally poor service. We attributed this to new staff and a change in location, yet remained hopeful. However, today's dining experience reached a new low when I discovered a piece of plastic in my food, which I nearly ingested. While the exterior of your new location on Powers Ferry Rd is visually stunning, the decline in both food quality and service is unmistakable. It's regrettable to say that what was once a favorite spot has now lost our patronage. Best wishes for improvement, though we won't be returning.

Yelp
Great Food. We had the Peking duck and make sure you ask them to fry the bones in their fry seasoning that they use to make the Dry Beef Appetizer.

Fudie G.

Yelp
Personally had a wonderful experience, staff is EXCELLENT. Even though this is a new place they've got it together really well. Can't please everyone though, how can you expect to have a waiter pay close attention to you every minute when it's lunch rush? Whatever though, I guess some people think they need to be waited on hand and foot, just writing this out so that the owner knows I was pleased when I came in the previous week. The ladies up at the front were very welcoming. Food was good. What more could you want?

B V.

Yelp
The Fried Eggplant , Bamboo Fried Flounder, and twice cooked Pork was really good! Morgan , our server, was very helpful and took great care of us. We sat in the patio upstairs and had a very pleasant dinner. Perfect atmosphere, food, and service!

Yelp
My recent visit to Tasty China left much to be desired. The poor customer service was evident from the moment we walked in. The servers seemed inexperienced and were unfamiliar with the menu, which made ordering a challenge. Their unprofessional demeanor was quite noticeable. To make matters worse, when our food finally arrived, much of it was disappointingly cold. It's disheartening when a restaurant can't even serve a hot meal. As we were leaving, I noticed the manager standing nearby, but there was no acknowledgment or farewell, which added to the overall feeling of neglect. It's sad to say that this Tasty China location is not what it used to be. It falls far short of the standard I remember from its previous location.

Yelp
We enjoyed our experience here. The food was delicious. The table had Shan City Chicken, Basil Eggplant, and Orange Chicken. All the dishes were tasty, but the Shan City Chicken was extra special. It is spicy, and worth a try. Overall, the service was pleasant. Our cups were never empty! We plan to come back when we visit the area again.

Yelp
Dry fried banana was mush. Over salted. Victor said manager would call us back they never did.

Yelp
Another great dinner at Tasty China . Food was great as always. They were super busy on a Friday night and they were short staffed , but we did not care we just relaxed and enjoyed the upstairs dining area

Jeffrey T.

Yelp
Food was delightful, The ambiance is modern With mellow earthy vibes . Every dish met or exceeded our expectations.

Neal G.

Yelp
We ate there last week and it was great. It is relatively close to home. It has lots of spicy options. Nice menu with lots of vegetarian options. We ate on the second floor before Trivia Night started. It is very nice and it would probably be better once it is warm enough for the patio to open up. We had an eggplant dish, the mapo tofu and the meatball dish in addition to appetizers. The appetizers were good but all the entrees were excellent. The waitress and server were also very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. The menu(and so far the food as well on our one visit) were the closest to what we have gotten at Masterpiece but without the long drive.

Lorielle P.

Yelp
The restaurant looks nice from the outside but the food isn't good. The basil chicken lacked flavor, fried dumplings were just okay, fried rice tastes like mall food court fried rice, and the orange chicken was the only item on the table that we found to be edible.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
We gave it a third try and it was the charm! Quick service, knowledgeable server, amazing food.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh man! The other reviews of this restaurant are so wrongful. Please ignore them. Jeffrey S. complained that a dish was spicy. In a Szechuan restaurant? What a shocker! Most of the other complaints are about the service. I don't know what it is with the entitled younger generations and why they think they should be treated like royalty and served as if they were 23-year-old kings and queens. Who cares about the service in a Chinese restaurant? When has any great Chinese restaurant ever had good service? This is the best Tasty China yet! I have been to the other three locations (all now closed), as well as the restaurant in the Ponce Market, which has the same ownership and is still there despite whiny reviews. This new spot is attractive looking, serves cocktails, which I haven't tried yet, and they were playing some decent jazz the other day. The spicy noodles are a breathless wonder, but don't order them if you can't handle very spicy food. I had the Tofu with Mushroom in Clay Pot at the Tasty China in Smyrna and that was a relatively new dish, which I was thinking of months later. For my upcoming birthday, this is where I am headed.
google avatar

Shmeka J.

Yelp
Food is the best, my family orders for holidays an and whenever we get guests from out of town it is a hit at our house. It's respectable Chinese, not for the faint of heart.

Jacquelyn F.

Yelp
This was like the best Basil Chicken I've ever had. The chilli oil on the side was perfect and flavorful in our sticky white rice. We will be back.
google avatar

Calbin L.

Yelp
As committed, I did give this establishment another opportunity and I'm happy to say, much improved service. As a matter of integrity, I did carry out verses dining in this time. However, the staff was wonderful and as before, the food was delicious. Different bartender and the manager/supervisor was on top of everything. I will return to dine in and hopefully, to increase the rating for this business that reopened at a different location.

Tiffany J.

Yelp
A bit disappointing experience here. I was craving some eggs rolls and soup so decided to give this place a try. They do not serve egg rolls here , instead they have only spring rolls , so I ordered a couple those and the wonton soup. I must say that both things weren't that good, which is surprising because those were only appetizer/ side items. The spring rolls were burnt and hard to eat and the wonton soup was seriously salty and wontons were stale. It took about thirty minutes for my items to come out and while the servers were kind, there was one that couldn't answer questions I had about the menu. This seems to be a common theme here based on other reviews. The place is nice and it's got a lounge feel upstairs however I'm not sure if I'll return based on my first impression.

Lara K.

Yelp
I hate writing a bad review. This is someone's business. But I have to. I'm really insulted by the quality of the food. It was gross. And that's in addition to the poor service, overpriced menu and cold/sterile environment.

Azalea M.

Yelp
Food was good but the portions were tiny. There were no napkins, sauces or plastic ware with my take out my order. I will learn to cook that dish at home instead of getting ripped off at Tasty China.
google avatar

Patty S.

Yelp
We were there this evening. It's a new location for an old restaurant. This restaurant will not be here long. The waiter didn't know the menu. They didn't have what my husband ordered in addition to a number of other items on the menu. The we asked about another dish and the waiter couldn't answer our question and never went to find out. When he finally came back we tried ordering again. When our soup came we had no silverware or napkins. The waiter neglected to place my husbands order and we then cancelled it because it didn't come out by the time we finished our dinner. Service is terrible and the food is marginal. I would never come to this restaurant again. Mark this place off your list! We called and spoke to the manager as he wasn't around when we left and he was more than dismissive.

Jason W.

Yelp
I went there last night with a large, 14 person party. We ate family style and ordered about 10 different dishes (ordered multiples of a few). The place was busy and despite our large group, the service was great and the food was excellent, with everything coming out fast and hot. I was surprised to see the negative reviews, but it seems like whatever kinks existed previously have been worked out, now that they have been open over a month. I look forward to going back soon.
google avatar

Mathew S.

Yelp
Terrible service don't see this place lasting more then six months. Waste of a new building.

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
L3 Shrimp W. Cilantro was freaking hot ,I almost consider going to ER... Nothing on the menu is saying that this dish is this HOT!!!!!! My server was GREAT(Millennium) but she was new and had no ideal this dish was even HOT.

Ava L.

Yelp
So I live for Chinese dumplings. I was excited there was a place in Marietta that served soup dumplings so I didn't have to drive all the way to Buford Hwy. Let me tell you they were the worst soup dumplings I've ever had. They are most certainly bought in bulk frozen and reheated. I couldn't even finish the order. So disappointing.

Neshama B.

Yelp
We've been going to all the Tasty China's for many years. It's sad that the Marrietta location closed, then the Smyrna one. We do have a favorite dish from the old location that's no longer on the menu, yet so far they have been willing to make it for us. Everything is still spicy and delicious. The only problem we could have is that this new location is definitively no longer grungy like the Franklin rd. place was, so now we gotta actually dress nice as this place is practically fancy and shiny. The prices haven't gone way up though, so we still love Tasty China.

Peter S.

Yelp
I've followed Tasty China to every location they have moved to since they first opened. Was the best in town. The new location on Powers Ferry is the last one I will seek out. Food was just ok and nowhere near the quality and flavor of the original or the Smyrna location. Was seated upstairs and smelled like cigarettes. Ordered a cocktail before dinner; vodka rocks. Shot of vodka $11. Ok, I'll pay. Charge for ice: $1.50.... for ICE in an $11 drink!!! Really? Sorry to say that the vision that Peter, the original chef, brought to the name has been tarnished. Sad that this once great restaurant is no longer Tasty.

Paige H.

Yelp
I hosted a festive family gathering at Tasty China, and it was truly delightful. The Christmas decorations in the upstairs bar created a perfect holiday ambiance. The food was not only delicious but also surpassed our expectations. Nash, the manager, played a crucial role in planning our evening, offering invaluable assistance. The wait staff, especially Bianca, deserves special appreciation for providing excellent service. Our experience at this restaurant was fantastic, and I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone craving authentic Chinese cuisine.

Mitch B.

Yelp
Wow, I waited for this eatery to open. It was everything I expected. Michelle was our server, she was excellent. I ordered the Garden Duck, My friend had the Kung Po chicken. We both wanted light spice and she helped us with what to order. The duck was amazing , excellent presentation and a flavorful taste His was excellent as well. I also had a Pinot Noir and it was so smooth. We can't wait to bring more friends to this place . It was worth the wait and the diversity in the menu is wonderful. This is not a typical Chinese Restaurant, this is a gem.

Neela-Tony C.

Yelp
We used to go to the old location at Franklin Gate all the time. Great food and efficient, matter of fact service with no frills or fuss. The new Marietta location is a different story. The food is ok; service and attitude of the wait staff not so much. Long story short, I had to wait 40 minutes for an order I had called in at 6:07pm for pickup at 7:00pm. The people behind the bar and at the check-in desk have no business working at any restaurant in a customer facing capacity with the attitude they exhibited. The poor manager bent over backwards to try and salvage the situation, including profusely apologizing and comping me for whatever I finally got (which was not my full order). Not a good outcome for me (very annoyed and evening ruined after long day of travel) or for the restaurant (out close to $100 for an order). Food and ambience is fine, they just need to get better staff. Lots of reviews with the same theme, but clearly has not made a difference.

Heidi S.

Yelp
Ordered my usuals for the first time since they moved from Atlanta Rd to this new location. While the outside and aesthetics of the new restaurant are warm and inviting, lending to an upscale dining option, the food was disappointing. The three mushroom chicken lacked flavor and the chicken was dry (seemed like it was cooked in advance and then just added to the base sauce), eggplant dish was bland, and the spring rolls were mushy in the center. The fried rice was good. Not sure if this is a learning curve as it appears they have more cooks in the kitchen. I won't write them off just yet, but will give them time to teach the recipes and bring back the tasty.

Yvonne H.

Yelp
New to the area and this my go to for Chinese food! I love this place! Although I cannot handle spicy (Szechuan), there are other choices on the menu! My favorites so far are the lowmein, orange chicken and sesame chicken! I'm eating my way through the menu! The staff and bartenders are awesome! Great selection of cocktails and wines. Patrons of the restaurant are always friendly and if you happen to sit at the bar there will be another foodie sitting next to you comparing menu options! Jazz music plays in the background but you can definitely have a conversation if you are dining with others. Definitely recommend no matter the spice level you can handle!

Britton F.

Yelp
The service was excellent and venue is gorgeous! However, the food was EXTREMELY mediocre. Chicken was very tough and just overall food was below average in my opinion. The Dim Sum dumplings were not very good either, sauces taste strange too.
