A Year On From the Restaurant World’s Reckoning, What Has Actually Changed? | Eater

"A Boston-founded bakery and café chain that was publicly called out by employees in 2020 via a Change.org petition demanding tangible commitments to racial equity after workers noted a lack of people of color in executive roles, instances of racially insensitive behavior, and a managerial emphasis on a white, Instagram-driven aesthetic. Leadership responded by launching diversity training, formalizing HR reporting processes, promoting and hiring people of color into leadership, and promising wage and benefit improvements; some staff who remained, including a Bread Team supervisor, say these institutional changes feel meaningful and have put better protections in place even as skepticism about systemic limits remains." - Jaya Saxena

If you are looking for a place to stop and grab a sweet treat, a coffee or tea with a pleasant atmosphere, look no further than Tatte Bakery. The place is spacious with plenty of places to sit and enjoy the day, pastries are amazing and pair well with a wide selection of coffee and tea drinks. They also have a selection of food items if you are looking for more of a meal.

Tatte is so versatile in its products, and it feels like they specialize in everything! It’s hard to find a cafe that isn’t lacking in a certain area, but Tatte does not lack taste or quality in anything they offer. The coffee, salads, sandwiches, pastries, and meats are all fantastic, fresh, and taste high-end, but at an affordable price tag. I have visited every day so far while on my visit to Boston. I initially came for lattes and pastries, but decided to go for savory entrees while I was there. I don’t like salad but theirs are really excellent, and their dressings don’t taste loaded with sugar. The salmon, Jerusalem bagel, eggs, potato hashes, and more were really flavorful and fresh. Personally, it felt like guilt-free eating. Plus their bread is house-made! Pastries My favorite pastry was the sour cherry danish, the almond croissant was also great (I recommend it warmed for a softer bite). I thought the Morning Bun was a bit dry, and I would not order it again. Coffee I had a pistachio latte, honey halva latte, and plain latte. Pistachio was my favorite! Service Service was fast (even during rushes), but everything was great in terms of temperature. The employees were also very friendly and well-mannered. Tatte throughout the day had plenty of pastries, so I didn’t feel the need to show up first thing in the morning in order to have options.

I ordered two cakes. I am pretty sure they didn't make the cakes fresh but just pulled them from the case. Those berries were a little old. The tops of the cakes looked a little bit off. You can't charge premium prices and then pull from the cases when I make a point to order ahead. I've ordered before and not had that experience. But that was before they made a big noise at the election about all their immigrant workers needing to leave and I haven't used this place since. Clearly all their best people left and they've gone downhill since. Won't use them again.

If you have any dietary restrictions, I strongly recommend against getting food from this Tatte location. I have a life threatening nut allergy, which I indicated when I placed my order today and was clearly listed on the delivery receipt. However, when the food arrived there was a handwritten note from the store which said the pastries were directly contaminated by food with nuts in it. And all the food was in the same bag, meaning everything in my order was also contaminated. The store never tried to contact me either to cancel my order since it was clearly not allergy-friendly.

Google
Wow! After ordering from Tatte for the past three years, I never would have thought this could happen. I ordered the “fresh” mozzarella sandwich with prosciutto, and when I took a bite, I noticed something very chewy… it was a piece of wrapping paper! So incredibly disgusting. I called the store over and over, but there was no response. I don’t have a car and have class, so going there is a huge inconvenience. It’s so disappointing that something like this could slip past them. What a hazard.

Google
Great place to have brunch, staff are very nice and welcoming (and a little serious! most likely due to load of work) - The quality is almost the same as how they started few years ago - The size of each portion is getting smaller! See the picture - poor ventilation, consider a shower even if you step in to pick up an order

Google
Coffee good. Food is garbage. Strawberry french toast was sour, burnt, and dry. Went back to give them another try a different day. Coffee didn’t have anything special but was fine again. Was surprised to not see any art on a cappuccino that’s $5+. Staff appears depressed and just waiting for day/week/year to end. Atmosphere is like a cold, hotel lobby bathroom (subway tile everywhere and some lackluster attempts to decorate jt here and there). Bakery food presentation is nice, most are just stale and you can get fresher donuts and pastries at a gas station than here. Overall a consistent disappointment.

Google
The best Tatte branch I’ve been so far. The restaurant was very spacious, the staffs were nice and the service was fast. I was recommended lamb shakshuka with challah bread by the staff. The proportion was generous and it tasted good. However, if you don’t enjoy smell of lamb meat, I suggest you to go for non-lamb option. Tatte has nice variety of sweets and breads. I especially enjoyed the fruit tart and the pistachio croissant. However, the drinks I’ve tried so far were quite disappointing; cold brew and matcha latte. I’ve went Tatte 3 times so far for the last 4 days in Boston and would recommend this place(perhaps not for the drinks).

Yelp
Tatte is a new-ish chain of bakery and lunch spots, that first popped up in Boston. They are a good space for sandwich + salad or an early morning espresso + croissant. Newton has a sizeable room with abundant tables. Splendid ambience. It is a bright and quite loud dining room. Bakery has variety of great tasting breakfast and lunch items, dishes and sweet treats. Get there early for selection.. The tiramisu was kind of light, but well made. Items are made and boxed to-go. Review: 5

Yelp
We went early on a Sunday morning probably 30 mins after they opened. There were already a few customers there but within 45 mins or so it was packed and hard to get a table! We enjoyed everything we ordered. The potato and leek quiche (soft and well flavored) which came with the simplest but tastiest side salad - lettuce and pickled cabbage. The avocado croissant sandwich with over medium eggs. The sour cherry and cheese Danish and finally an iced pistachio latte. Special call out to the latte because Tatte always makes their syrups/mixes in house. It's actual pistachio and not some artificial essence BS. Hence, Tatte like Latte! Perfect ambiance for a Sunday morning. The cozy quiet of a chill Sunday with a slight buzz of a cafe that's coming alive. Blissful.

Yelp
So Tatte recently started serving dinner. I think they are still in a bit of the trial period, because the menu online does not reflect the menu in the store, they had tableside service for a while, but then took it away, etc... The food was pretty good. The mezze platter was well worth the money, and came with a very fluffy pita bread. We thought the lasagna was only so so, but the Aleppo, chicken rice, halloumi salad, and chicken pita were all delicious. It's interesting that they turn a lot of the lights off to make it a little bit more dinner like and romantic. I wish they had more of the lights on, but that's just my personal preference.
google avatar

Isaac R.

Yelp
I tried the Shakshuka lamb meatball, and it was so delicious; the lamb wasn't overpowering, and the taste was just perfect. I also tried the Meze breakfast, and it didn't look so appetizing, but it was delicious; the roasted shishito peppers were a surprise, and the bagel. I just didn't like their sausage breakfast sandwich; the breakfast sandwich tasted better.

Yelp
Yum! And if you have a gluten allergy, there are lots of choices...meals AND sweets. I had a chai latte that hit the spot and enjoyed the delicious spices in their version. I also nibbled on a giant (gluten free) raisin oatmeal cookie. This place is big and has seating at a counter, at a coffee bar, or tables.

Jenny C.

Yelp
--Pastries are just not fresh. They look impressive in their towering stacks, but that's the peak of the experience. --Check-out line needs to be sorted for people just purchasing ready-to-go items. You can wait 15 minutes to checkout with a simple pre-packaged good. --Too many people occupy the tables for hours on laptops "doing work." If guests are not consuming food/drink, they need to move on.

Yelp
Tatte is usually a solid choice if you're looking for a bite in Newton. The seating area is pretty massive -- yet it somehow is always filled up (probably a testament to their consistently good food!). I ordered an ice tea and turkey avocado sandwich. Both were fantastic -- the sandwich had a lot more taste than I expected, and I would definitely recommend it to someone who isn't sure about what to order. My only suggestion would be for this location to make their entry way and ordering process more streamlined. There was a disorganized crowd of people waiting to order which led to some frustration by employees. Overall a great experience here!

Yelp
My friend and I came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. I had never come to this Tatte before, but it was huge! There were tons of tables inside and some patio seating in the back. I had the chicken pita. The chunks of chicken inside were a little big, but all the ingredients went well together. The staff working here seemed a little stressed out, but given that it was weekend brunch and incredibly busy, it was understandable.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is declining. Staff seems indifferent, service is slow. Today, I ordered a halva-chocolate brownie. From among the heaping display of brownies, the server managed to find the one hardened and under-sized one. It was literally 1/2 the size of the others and rigid. I ask for a swap and he obliged. Why choose this one defective one to pass off to me? Did he not notice? (Bad.) Did he not care? (Also bad.) Was he deliberately trying to pass off the non-sales-worthy one on me? (Worst.)

Yelp
Tatte always delivers consistent solid food. The salmon bowl was excellent - surprisingly spiced and piping hot. The shakshuka is always fun and interesting. Only complaint is that the rice and bread were not as warm as we wanted. Food was served quickly given how busy they were. Beautiful outdoor seating although always heavily contested!
google avatar

Yelp
Girls night out with my friend and we decided to stop at Tatte in Newton Centre for dessert. Gorgeous space, good service, and we absolutely loved the cappuccino and the chocolate mousse! Will be back.
google avatar

Vince M.

Yelp
This place is good and short of great. The good is the menu and tasty food. Unfortunately once you order prepare for the disarray once you're ready to eat. Service is rushed and choppy so I don't recommend tipping over 10% . There sean to be a disconnection between staff and patrons. Ambiance well if you like Grand central in NYC is like eating right in the middle of it. PS. if you are eating here dressed nice I don't recommend sitting anywhere by the kitchen or you will come out smelling like every dish served.
google avatar

Joyce S.

Yelp
Really a convenient place! Can order online in advance or take out. Open sandwiches are good with the fresh ingredients. Speed in the kitchen. Coffee is only OK, would not give much credit.
google avatar

Andre L.

Yelp
Had lunch here. As usual this Tatte is extremely busy at lunch time so plan ahead. The queue moved quickly though. Ordered sundried tomato and eggplant sandwich and black sesame latte. RUN to try the sandwich. It's SOOOO good. The latte is tasty too.
google avatar

Martha C.

Yelp
Got the quiche for takeout, and it was very burned. The crust was black. I'm surprised the let it out of the kitchen.
google avatar

Alexandra A.

Yelp
Tatte Bakery is really good ! The food and coffee is fresh & you can taste it ! The hot chocolate is really good too , just wanted to add that in . The staff is friendly . The vibe is welcoming ! It's pricey but it reflects the high caliber ingredients &. Food quality. If you want to treat yourself it's worth it !
google avatar

Helen M.

Yelp
One of my favorite Tatte locations! Super spacious and well lit with lots of seating, haven't had to wait for a seat like I have at other Tatte locations even at peak times. Despite how large it is service is pretty quick, I got my food within 15 minutes. Just as a heads up the chefs at this location will not make any swaps or edits to menu items-- even won't switch the type of bread on the side of the shakshuka.
google avatar

Elizabeth Y.

Yelp
Grabbed a quick bite for lunch with my coworker. I got the lamb pita, they got the turkey BLT, and we shared the blueberry cheescake. The lamb was moist but it had soooo much sauce it was hard to eat and taste anything else in the pita. Wish they put less or that I asked for it on the side. My coworker enjoyed their sandwich. The cheesecake was the best part of the meal, I would definitely recommend that!
google avatar

Sophie T.

Yelp
Everytime I go here, it's pretty much the same experience, which isn't a bad thing! You wait in line, get asked by the bakery if you want anything (which was confusing at first since in the end I just told the person working the register and they got my croissant for me) and then you keep walking down the line until checkout. :) The wait time here is short, and the staff is super friendly. There's a massive parking lot out back (anyone remember the Panera days?) and a really nice outdoor seating setup outside. This place is definitely one of the bigger Tatte bakery/cafe joints out there. This literally used to be a Panera bread so try to picture that if you can. Clearly Tatte is a huge hit given there's always somewhat of a line, and there's never a place to sit. That's the only hard part about coming here-- everyone likes to mingle or work over a cup of coffee (can't blame em) so finding a place to sit can be super tough.
google avatar

Bea T.

Yelp
I really love this location because it's so lofty. My mocha coffee was spot on. Service was friendly and professional. I enjoyed it a lot. Very ideal for local residence here. A very family environment.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a pleasant surprise and experience looks like. I was in town from Miami visit a friend when suggested we check out this new charming bakery for a light brunch. Lovely place fast counter service, they give you a number and bring the food and special coffee orders to the table. The atmosphere has a pulse not quiet or quaint. The design is very clean sleek French bistro meets Swedish design and practicality. The food and baked goods are superb, service is good, fast with a smile. Feel free to ask questions everyone is warm and friendly. I hope you check this place out and I hope it continues to stay on point with originality, quality and great service. Love this place.
google avatar

Anita B.

Yelp
How can a plain ole scrambled egg be so amazing? Best i've ever had. The place us always bustling , but worth any wait. Great baked goods too.

Jordyne W.

Yelp
LOVE their Honey Halva Latte (hot or iced), avocado and turkey sandwich with all the fixings, Muesli with fruit and granola. Love that we can order for pickup or at times, delivery. Manager Kim is super nice, helpful if there's an issue with an order or on big orders. Space is bright, airy, good for individual or group seating.
google avatar

Kickstar H.

Yelp
The service and vibe is good. It is bit loud though, but their outdoor seating was nice. Their sandwiches are pretty good but their pastries are very mediocre. We ordered two coffees with no foam and, when they came they both had foam. It was good though.

Megan M.

Yelp
Love Tatte. In fact I am a Tatte fiend. Almond crossaint and house latte are a weekly treat for our friend group!!
google avatar

Austin J.

Yelp
Love Tatte but this location needs an overhaul. Ordered online and 25% of the items were wrong.
google avatar

Sergey A.

Yelp
It's extremely packed during lunch, don't bother. Coffee is OK, not great, better than some other locations. For food, I tried the ham & cheese croissant, very delicious. Some outlets are not well positioned to plugin your laptop, so if you bring a computer with you to work, makes you take extra time to even find an outlet.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Tatte so I was happy to come across this location in Newton. Looks can be deceiving. It looks like a normal storefront but once you enter, you realize how huge this place is. Mammoth. We came during lunch and it was quite busy, with a long line of people getting takeout, but the bar and dining area were buzzing as well. I will say it is hard to stay disciplined as you pass all the excellent pastries and cookies on your way to order lunch. However, we stayed strong and got the lamb meatball dish. The service staff was really awkward, almost rude, very strange. But oh well, we shuffled off to the back and found a seat by a window. The food was excellent - the lamb and veggies were great, but the pita, oh man the pita. I have no idea how they make the pita so perfect. It really makes the dish. On our way out, we got some cookies for the road. Aside from the weird counter service, the overall experience and the FOOD were excellent.
google avatar

Josh L.

Yelp
A decent spot for small bite and a coffee. The quality of food is nice. I had a latte, gingerbread poundcake, and a ham and chees croissant with a bechemel sauce. It was all delicious. You order at a counter, they give you a number and bring the food to you. The service is friendly and quick considering how fresh the food tastes. Only slight improvement would be the atmosphere, it gets a bit loud, there aren't many outlets for charging electronics, and seating seems full pretty often. This is not a quiet place for work or study; this is a place for lively conversation.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Good location overall. Outdoor seating is more limited than some other locations. Sometimes gets insanely busy and they are unable to handle the line/orders.
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
Tatte has delicious baked goods, and food in general. They also have a variety of delicious drinks. The Turkey avocado sandwich was delicious and so was the lemon mint tart! The Newton Center location has plenty of parking nearby, which makes it easy to go to. Tatte is also available for delivery through DoorDash and has been fresh and delicious when I have ordered that way as well. It is a bit expensive, but it is worth it!
google avatar

Q B.

Yelp
This is a really cute location...Parking lot out back, lots of seating...and what I got for lunch was amazing - perfectly cooked salmon, the rice was herbaceous and so flavorful, sweet squash and a little hit from the chili oil. 10/10...I also got the Honey Apple Cake which was the perfect finish to the meal.
google avatar

Joy G.

Yelp
Tatte is like that best friend from home. You probably won't see or talk to them much in months but every time you meet again, it's comforting and picking back up is super easy. I first ate at Tatte when I was visiting the city with my husband as a potential place to relocate and loved the menu, the tuna sandwich we ordered, and the bustling cafe vibes, and so I have a soft spot in my heart for the place. Convenient location in Newton Centre. There's a parking lot right in front - metered before 6pm but it's super cheap and you can pay using the Park Mobile app. Definitely draws a crowd during the lunch hours, though the line moves quickly. They have an assortment of pastries and desserts arranged tantalizingly in front right before the register. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I skew more towards their salads, which all come with the cutest, fluffiest bread bun, but their sandwiches are also tasty. They can be on the smaller size, depending on what you order. Never really had to wait for a table, no matter how busy it looked.

Sarah I.

Yelp
Horrible service food was cold which I ordered a hot dish and made me physically ill with food poisoning. My table was dirty and it was a horrible ambiance! It is sub par
google avatar

anabela D.

Yelp
Don't believe the hype . Loud large chaos in trying to be french bistro vibe . Very underwhelmed by all - based on takeout and in-person dining. No table service - you order at counter, grab a table and it's brought to you. Tried their croissants which were very average for takeout a few days earlier from Boston location. For dine in brunch was at this location and had mezze brunch platter. Jerusalem Bagel dry. Spreads salty without interesting taste profile . Added house made sausage which was inedible and had strange gluey consistency. Looked and tasted like dog food -shocked it was on a human plate. Best thing on platter was a yummy tomatoe salad . They didn't do much to it flavoring wise but the tomatoes were peak fresh sweet. This trip I bought a to go donut which looked amazing but dough was over yeasted and a very small amount of jam. Overall for the price point and taste -Non merci SKIP!

Yelp
It's so cute inside! Great place to hang out or get get some work and/or studying done.

Yelp
i love tatte. their food is so good and i want to eat the whole menu. this was my first time trying shakshuka and i really enjoyed it, big meal and the challah bread was delish i highly recommend

Okra W.

Yelp
Nothing but wonderful! Excellent selection of baked goods and plates. Spacious, airy, with very nice servers. For breakfast we had the avocado tartine and the lamb hash. Both were outstanding. I'm already looking forward to our next visit.

D R.

Yelp
The atmosphere is busy and they have many locations. Their food seems to be consistent. Croquet Madame and Monsieur is delicious, you can't go wrong with any of the pastries. There is a wait but worth it. It is a little pricey. It is nice place to sit down or do a take out. I like their croissants and anything with chocolate, apricot. Not your run of the mill pastries. The only thing I did not buy was anything that had a very hard crust, unless you are planning to soak that in your coffee,or other beverage.
google avatar

Ti W.

Yelp
I've always been loving Tatte's breakfast, brunch and pastry, and this time I was surprised by its summer special drink. The beet seltzer had a perfect blended flavor of beet, honey and sparkling water, and it was not super sweet which was perfect for me. I would say this was one of the best summer drinks I've ever had recently!
google avatar

Clifton O.

Yelp
A wide menu of Middle Eastern influenced options, whether you're looking for a premium-taste sit-in meal with great ingredients, or a unique pastry to go. I'm a big eater so the salmon sandwich didn't fill me up, but the taste was so fresh, I'd highly recommend it regardless.

Evan H.

Yelp
Terrible food. I keep coming back because it's quick and I'm usually with at least two children, but maybe this is the problem and they are rushing. Latest offense was an inedible quiche. The crust was so thick and hard it could not be cut through. Before that it was a breakfast sandwich with a literal spit of scrambled eggs and bacon so gray it would blend in with cement. I also have gotten stale baked goods more times than I can count. I think I may actually be done with Tatte.
google avatar

Winter B.

Yelp
I love tatte! The food is extremely consistent and I always get a delicious meal. My favorite things on the menu are the green nutty salad and the turkey avocado sandwich. Their bread is super fresh and so yummy. Their online ordering system is great and if I order around 15 minutes before getting there it is pretty much always ready. The only downside is that it gets very crowded and loud so if you are with a big group or want a quiet lunch to yourself I would not recommend coming here

Sofia M.

Yelp
If you ask for something to be warmed up, you will need to eat it fast because otherwise it gets cold. Seems to me that they don't make it hot enough. I didn't wait that long to eat my food. Customer service isn't very good here. People seem so rude! Would I come back here... maybe. But I would come back here for their drinks! There drinks are good! I do not like customer service. Everyone seems like they hate their job! You barely see anyone smiling either. It's really sad. Now I am visiting from out of state so maybe this is just how people are here.
google avatar

Leah C.

Yelp
the Newport Beach of bakery/brunch places. the inside is super simple and tasteful, good options for seating, lotsa great food options that r accommodating to every type of diet and all around good ass spot!!! it will forever make me smile bc it is so Boston

Yelp
Finally, there is a location of Tatte in Newton Centre! This area is personally familiar and filled with memories of spending childhood summers with my grandmother, visited by friends, at her house and at the Crystal Lake beach minutes away. Tatte happens to be an extremely popular cafe in Boston and D.C., now fusing it with Newton in a cappuccino-and-nutbox love. This is the first Tatte in Massachusetts to venture outside of Boston into the suburbs, away from their first and flagship cafe in Brookline, where it was called Tatte Pâtisserie and Café during its days as a hole-in-the-wall of anonymity, serving nutboxes and a few cookies and pastries. It blossomed nationwide since, and found itself in Newton Centre, with an atmosphere of party anticipation, a greeting of bustling excitement and a fun cornucopia of Tatte-ness. A must visit!

Nicole M.

Yelp
New to the area and so excited to try Tatte... ordered coffee and a fruit cup online, picked it up and realized when I was home 50% of the fruit was moldy. Second visit ordered online a coffee and 2 brownies and 2 cookies - took a quick look in the bag and thought I saw everything but when I got home only had one cookie. Just frustrating to pay for things that are either inedible or not there. I expected better based on their reputation.
google avatar

Letizia H.

Yelp
If you like pastries and desserts, this place will knock your socks off! The selection and display was extraordinary and I wanted to try everything. The little cheesecake with red berries was creamy and delicious and a perfect balance between crust, filling, and fruit...so so so good. I also had the turkey and avocado sandwich on challah, which I loved but I can see how others might find it on the small side. I was saving my appetite for the cheesecake so it was ideal for me. The only reason I don't give this location 5 stars is that it was super crowded and you have to be like a buzzard, looking for somebody to leave so you can pounce on their table. That is not the fault of the business but for those of us who get easily stressed out by this kind of thing, well, go with a friend who isn't afraid to barrel in there and be assertive.
google avatar

Anne H.

Yelp
Yes for quality but one star off for crazy long lines. Ambiance is super loud. Hard to hear what I myself am saying let alone the person across table.
