Where To Eat And Drink Around Harvard

"If you’re still trying to find your way around campus, you’ll be forgiven for thinking that the Harvard Square Tatte is actually the undergrad library. This place is packed at all hours of the day with people simultaneously reading Proust and eating really good shakshuka. If you’re coming here primarily to study, you can do so with just a coffee or something from the pastry case - though you should come to this full-service Israeli spot for a full lunch at some point." - dan secatore

The Best Restaurants In Harvard Square

"Harvard does have a library, right? It must (and if it doesn’t, someone’s gotta make a call to the US News college rankings people). But you’d be forgiven for assuming it doesn’t when you walk into Tatte, a massive two-story cafe that’s packed at all hours of the day and has a laptop and an open biology book on nearly every table. Step up to the pastry counter, though, and you’ll understand why this place is so popular. The chocolate brioche and espresso mocha mousse are so good you won’t care that it might not be socially acceptable to eat dessert at 11 in the morning. And Tatte isn’t just a pastry place, either, it’s got a big menu of sandwiches, salads, tartines, and other Middle Eastern-ish specialties like fattoush and shakshuka. You could easily spend your whole day here, holed up in a booth by the window, rolling from one meal to the next." - dan secatore

Google
It is now a classic, and a franchise. It keeps the high quality of pastries and coffees it had when it was a stand alone store. Really terrific Israel meets American pastries, with use of sesame seed, various nuts, halva and other delicacies. It is a must try if you are visiting Harvard Square or you are one of many locals that come here every day

Google
Awesome stop! Mauricio was very friendly, answered all of our questions, and was quick. Got our order 100% accurate. You Gotta come here if you’re close to Harvard. CLEAN, FRIENDLY, LITE, AND DELICIOUS. We were with a group of 16 and ordered several different things to try. My favorite was the Ham and cheese Croissant. Lite & fluffy. Full of flavor(I’m sure j don’t want to look at macros.. 😂). Lemon poppy seed cake was moist and perfect.

Google
Relatively quick service. Food was delish - we got the lamb with hash plus the shakshuka with lamb. If you like something on the light side, go for lamb with hash. Or if you like something on the acidic or heavier side, go for the shakshuka. Wouldn't recommend the refresher (mango and ginger) as i feel like the mango was not fresh. Overall, very nice place to eat. Just a little lack of seating.

Google
The location, atmosphere, and service were great! The drinks were pretty good. The food was different for us but we’re from the south. It was good, but if you’re used to southern breakfasts, order something different so you won’t be disappointed! Their “salsa” was similar to tomato soup with no spice so that was unique!

Google
I really like this restaurant. The food is fresh, clean, and made with healthy, high-quality ingredients. Everything tastes delicious. I especially recommend the salmon fried rice and the appetizers — both are excellent. It’s a perfect place for brunch. Highly recommended!

Google
Good semi self serve eatery. Prices are high but lots of fancy and yummy pastries. This place is a self seating place where you order your food, you’re given a table number and the waiters bring your food to you when ready. You are expected to bus your own tables when done. Given this set up, no reservations but lots of seating inside and out.

Google
Love this cafe in Harvard Square. Such an awesome location with ample sitting space and awesome food and coffee. It's clean and modern with a Harvard feel. I have come here a few times during my stay in Cambridge and absolutely love the vibe and the food. The pastries are also great.

Reuben H.

Google
Fantastic! Superb shakshuka - just the right blend of spices. It's very rare I can't finish a meal but this was perfect for a lunchtime bite. And at only $15 it's a great deal.

Yelp
great place with great ambiance. staffs are so friendly and polite. for foods... 1. fresh corn and avocado farro bowl: love it!!! like all body needs were fully covered due to their ingredients and mostly, they use all fresh and from the scratch 2. smoked salmon and avocado tartine: so good and the salmon is yummy 3. pistachio croissant: flaky which is great!!! the pistachio itself so good and right sweet 4. pineapple passion fruit matcha bombe: must try!!! love the taste though, can taste the matcha flavor cause not that sweet and suddenly when you scoop the filing which is passion fruit, a bit sour but by mixing them all, you can not stop eating it 5. white peach and mint tea cooler: for me, just ok love this place and will come back for sure when i visit east coast again...

Yelp
Make sure if you buy food to go that you take utensils because they may not! Ask them also to correct mistakes, you paid for it! The salad was great, sandwich also delicious. Beautiful place, very busy though, not a relaxing spot. More of a high end see and consume elsewhere kind of place.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon after exploring Harvard. The line took about 20 minutes for me to get to the register. It was a little difficult to find seating for 4 people, and we waited until a table left before sitting down. I'm not sure if clearing tables is the customer's responsibility or the staff, but the lunch plates were never cleared in the hour I spent there to enjoy my pastries and drinks. The pastries were by far the star of the show, deliciously sweet and decadent without being too sugary, and we chose the sugar vanilla donut and the morning bun (their cinnamon roll). As you can see, my group snapped it up before I could grab a pic! However their drinks left much to be desired. I had the tatte house latte and I thought that the cinnamon was overwhelming and the other flavors (cardamom, honey) were faint. My mom simply had a latte and she said it was mediocre. My little brother's mango mint refresher was decent, and so was my uncle's cappuccino. The coffee itself didn't shine through either. They do offer oat milk substitutes which was nice. I will say that the interior was nice, location is convenient, and as is with all popular places, it gets particularly busy on the weekends.

Yelp
While visiting the Harvard campus, we stumbled upon Tatte Bakery and decided to stop in. I usually order a matcha latte, but I was severely disappointed this time--it tasted like watered down grass, lacking the rich, smooth flavor I expected. The bakery was bustling with customers dining in and taking out, but despite the crowd, I didn't quite understand the hype around it. Overall, it felt overrated based on my experience.

Yelp
Very delicious place, i like everything just by looking at all the food. Their cannolis place is always crowded and the manage to have everything very clean and the food presentation was very good also, i tried just a few things and everything was delicious, the staff is fast but the food is not, any ways by the time you find a table you food will be ready, price was reasonable i think. Honestly is totally a must in Boston.

Yelp
Tatte Bakery & Café has a ton of locations around Boston, so I figured I'd give it a try. As a disclaimer, this was my first time trying Mediterranean food (and also my last). I was feeling adventurous and ordered a few things I'd never heard of, but honestly, this was probably the worst food and drink experience I've ever had. I didn't finish a single dish, which says a lot because I'm usually very against wasting food. The food was at least edible, but the honey halva latte was the most disgusting thing I've ever tasted, and that's coming from someone who regularly drinks black coffee. Very disappointing for my first meal in Boston.

Rafael M.

Yelp
Looks good ....... Is basically a zoo first come first serve No waiting list so you have to be hunting tables and of course you have people walking all around you, people w the stupid computers or on the phones just sitting doing nothing Grab it to go if you want I never come back!! Food is good Just take it to go

Yelp
Love this Tatte location in Harvard! The chocolate croissants are my absolute favorite--flaky, buttery, and always fresh. Great coffee, friendly staff, and a cozy spot to sit and enjoy the buzz of Harvard Square.
google avatar

Yelp
A friend and I ordered two drinks: an Iced matcha latte and the tatte house latte! The tatte house latte surprised me so much! It has a cinnamon-like taste, and it was subtly sweet, just the way I like it. The matcha latte was pleasing to look at it especially with the logo written in cursive. The taste was equally very good! Service was kind and quickly responsive! There were a lot of families around noon on a Sunday. A couple of accidental spills occurred yet the staff and the people there were able to help each other, so already the environment felt quite friendly and supportive in this regards! In spite of the gloomy day, the interior lighting created a warm, kind atmosphere.

Yelp
Very long line but interesting latte offerings (Black Sesame Latte and Pistachio Latte) Enjoyed the muffins as well, ordered a tumeric muffin and a blueberry muffin! Other than the long line really enjoyed the morning stop here. Hope to return

Yelp
Tatte, we sure liked you a latte! Visited Boston/Cambridge for 28 hours on our girls' adventures in New England! After wandering around Harvard, we grabbed an amazing lunch at Latte in Harvard Square! We each had the summer drink specials- faves were the white peach and mint tea, mango and ginger tea! Our plates were perfect- absolutely perfect- the crunchy halloumi salad was the best salad I've had in many moons- I think of it too often! My friends went the sandwich route with filling options of the turkey avocado and the short rib grilled cheese. As a sweet treat, we shared a vanilla lime krembo- if you have a sweet tooth, you're going to love this- the lime curd center was the cat's meow for me! There are many Tatte locations, but to be able to enjoy the sunshine and delicious treats across the way from the gates of Harvard University... well, there isn't a better spot!

Yelp
Solid regional bakery and cafe. The Lamb Hash was tasty and a balanced meal. It was a packed establishment when we went in the late afternoon. Will be back to try their baked goods!

Yelp
It's my first time trying out Tatte Bakery and Cafe! I didn't know they are a large cafe chain in the Northeast. We came in the afternoon for tea and some light pastries. I really recommend their teas and pastries! The blue flower earl gray was amazing! The pot is a good choice having more tea, which is just perfect with the pear tart. I highly recommend the pear tart. It's perfectly baked and balanced of flavors. Not too sweet, but just enough for your tea. It's a busy place Sunday afternoon with students, but you can find some open tables in between.

Yelp
Coffee was paid 4.50 for a small one, Then when I asked for a refill. They politely said no... just lovely! Not worth it

Yelp
First time visiting boston so of course I had to try Tatte bakery. They had a huge selection of pastries but I decided to order an iced vanilla latte and an apple turnover. Iced latte: (5/5) Vanilla wasn't too sweet and the espresso was good quality. Apple turnover: (4/5) They didn't serve it warm which I found odd but besides that it was good. I'm not sure if u can ask them to warm it but if you can I would suggest doing so. Overall this place was good but the line is usually really long (especially the bathroom!!!) and there's so many cafes to try in the area so I would rather explore others the next time i'm in boston.

Yelp
I work in Cambridge and wish there was a Tatte back home in RI! This is one of my all time favorite cafes. It's esthetically beautiful, welcoming, and gives off upscale classy cafe vibes. The cafe is very clean and the Harvard Square location even has an upstairs. There is plenty of seating. Since I drive in for work, I often have my vehicle with me and it can be a very busy area. I got lucky this time and found on street meter parking right outside the building. The cashier was a superstar! She offered great suggestions and I splurged and got every single thing she recommended. Amazing service from each person at the cafe. The staff is so attentive. Upon ordering, my pastries were already bagged and delivered once I cashed out. I got an Iced Pistachio latte and it was delicious! Being a Coffee-Holic - Usually these Pistachio lattes are hit or miss if it is not made right or too artificial but Tatte's Pistachio Latte was absolutely perfect! Smooth, velvety, great quality, and a nice subtle flavor. Just a heads up, it does have some texture in it with the Pistachio's but I really enjoyed it. If you're not a texture person, I would recommend a flavor shot latte. I also got the ham and cheese croissant and chocolate croissant - warm and flaky! 10/10!!!

Yelp
We stopped by for a quick breakfast at this place twice during our trip. The bakery items looked great and the ones we tasted were really delicious. Most of the sandwiches were great except one that was little too salty. French toast was amazing. The service is friendly and quick. This place gets crowded so if you are looking for calm relaxing coffee time, this place is not it.
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
One thing about this Tatte location - it's gonna be crowded. Weekends are the worst but even on weekdays it can be hard to find a seat. They did just open the second floor seating back up which makes it a little cozier (and easier to find a seat). There's still outdoor seating right now but I'm not sure if that's only because the weather so far has been pretty mild. I have ordered the same thing the last two times I came - the butternut squash hummus and roasted veggie pita. I love it! The roasted veggies pair so well with the creamy and savory hummus. The hummus flavor is very unique - the butternut squash makes it really smooth with a hint of sweetness, and there's a nice kick from the spices (I think I mainly taste cumin). The pita itself is fluffy and warm and they don't skimp on the veggies. Wish this wasn't a seasonal item!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
It is definitely a bakery with a full blown kitchen for breakfast. They offer bakery goods as well as a breakfast menu, mainly a variety of egg sandwiches. They have a large community table inside with a half dozen tables outside that handle nine people. The plan is for the tables to be shared because how many parties of nine are out there. The also have stools looking out the window. I am not sure what they do during the winter when there is no seating outside. Right across the street from Harvard, they must have a substantial take-out business. I had the Muesli which is yogurt, fresh fruit including blackberries, raspberry and sliced apple with a layer of granola. The yogurt was delicious. I usually look at the items ordered by other people before I decide what to order. Their egg dishes looked tempting. They had plenty of staff to handle the traffic. They give everyone that orders from the kitchen a number so they know where to deliver the food. If I am in Harvard square, I found my breakfast stop.

Yelp
Never tried this chain before , we were on a college tour and wanted something to eat right after so we stepped in The menu and the pastries both looked promising , and I ended up ordering the shakshuka . Despite not being the best one I ever had it was pretty descent and I liked the quantity and the overall experience . The tomato sauce is out of a can but is not bad at all. I will come back to perhaps try the pistachio croissant which was looking promising !
google avatar

Julie Y.

Yelp
I always love the black sesame latte from Tatte! It's very smooth with a subtle black sesame flavor. I also tried the pistachio croissant this time and it was a little dry inside. This location is very busy and difficult to find seating.
google avatar

Paula R.

Yelp
We doubted if it would be good based on how many locations there are but we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast! We stopped at the location in Cambridge on a Friday, there was a long line but it moved quick. Getting seats can be tricky especially if there's more than two of you. We had the pear tart, pizza focaccia, and shashuka and everything was delicious! The pear tart is not overly sweet and it is well balanced. The focaccia is fresh and the toppings are yummy. Shashuka is fresh and the bread it comes with is pillowy soft.
google avatar

Sally C.

Yelp
This location is so busy, but they are efficient and quick at getting the food out. If you come at a busy time, good luck getting a seat. The seating arrangement is not great for a place that has such a high volume of patrons. The tables are round and tiny, and it can get cramped real quick. The food is generic but tasty. The sugar donut was my favorite snack.
google avatar

Anastasia L.

Yelp
We were so tired after touring Harvard's campus and we were searching for a nice place to chill and have a little snack. This place is perfect for that! I got a chai tea, tiramisu, and a passion fruit krembo. The chai tea was the perfect sweetness, unlike most cafes that make it overly sweet! The passion fruit krembo was amazing too. At first I thought it was too sweet but when I hit the sour passion fruit curd, it balanced everything out. Above all that , the service was great! 100% recommend!
google avatar

Sara G.

Yelp
Came in twice on weekdays in the summer. Pretty crowded but nothing crazy, line moved quickly. Pros: beautiful selection of pastries, ample seating upstairs and downstairs, accessible water, lots of natural light. Cons: not much in the way of hot food if you are vegetarian--ordered tomato bisque soup both days, (was decent) and both days my order was forgotten and I had to go back for the soup while my friend ate. staff weren't the friendliest.
google avatar

Patricia D.

Yelp
The restaurant is clean and bright. We went on a Saturday afternoon, so it was very busy. But they have a wide selection of salads, bowls, sandwiches, and pastries. We were still able to find seats. Great place to enjoyed a view of Harvard Yard.
google avatar

Kristy T.

Yelp
I LOVE ALL THE THINGS ABOUT THIS PLACE!!! The coffee is beyond delicious, the food is great, the pastries are to die for and the people that work there are so extremely nice. The line might be long but the rewards are worth it.
google avatar

Mark N.

Yelp
Atmosphere and menu deserve 4/5. Coldbrew is a 2/5. won't come back. Well maybe I will but I won't get a cold brew
google avatar

Finn B.

Yelp
Literally anywhere else. Can't speak on the drinks but the food sucked. They ran out of croissants and could not make me a croque madam with a different bread. Instead they suggested I should get the breakfast sandwhich. 1 the comparison was nothing like it and 2. the bread was sooo STALE. Speaking of substitutes, my gf wanted a grilled cheese and soup. They said that the grilled cheese comes with short rib on it. She asked if they could make it without the short rib and they said they cannot. When it arrived there was also beets on the sandwich. Who ruins a grilled cheese with beets... also overpriced
google avatar

Rocky W.

Yelp
This place is always BOOMING! There is usually a line out the door on the weekends or peak hours. They have an outside area with tables plus ground level and upstairs dining. They serve pastries, food, coffee, and tea here. The service is pretty quick, we got our food and drinks in 10 minutes. The roasted cauliflower sandwich (pine nuts, spicy labneh, raisins, chilies, cilantro, and capers) is the absolute best! It's relatively healthy and delicious with a little spicy kick to it. The prosciutto and fig panini sounded good, but the taste wasn't there.
google avatar

Christine J.

Yelp
The changes they've been making has been disappointing. I loved their chicken salad sandwich when it came with a nice pile of alfalfa sprouts. They've stopped that and subbed lettuce leaves instead since a couple of years ago and it's just not the same. The portion of tuna in the tuna salad sandwich has declined over time as well.
google avatar

Yuri J.

Yelp
Lovely and spacious Tatte location, but it was VERY crowded and a tad chaotic due to the number of people and busy workers. The line is very long and can be harder to find a seat. Pastries and coffee is delicious - can't go wrong with any treat. The pistachio cherry tart was buttery and filling, paired with a drip coffee!
google avatar

Clau R.

Yelp
I met some friends at Tatte's last weekend for breakfast. One of my friends is gluten free, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that Tatte's has an entire gluten free menu separate from the regular menu! This was so nice to find, given that most other places have just a few gluten free options or are willing to make certain substitutions. Tatte's certainly hit it out of the park with this! Location-wise, this bakery is centrally located in Cambridge and right across the street from Harvard. As we were walking there, we encountered a wonderful street market, as well, that spanned several blocks and offered live music, tons of food, and other goodies. Tatte's itself is pretty big, with 2 floors of seating. The main pastry/food bar is downstairs, which is where you order, and there seemed to be a bar upstairs, as well. Since it's a popular place, it was a bit challenging to find seating, but we eventually found a cute seating area with some couches and chairs. Half of us waited online while the other half guarded the seats, and after about a 15 min wait, we ordered our food. The food came out quickly and was all delicious! We were all happy with what we had chosen. I split food with my friend and we shared the smoked salmon, egg, and avocado sandwich as well as the savory french toast. As we were leaving, we grabbed some pastries to go. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
This is a great cafe/bakery near Harvard's campus, perfect for a casual breakfast or brunch before exploring Cambridge. My friends and I stopped here on our way to walk through Harvard on a Sunday morning. The cafe was quite full, and we had a little bit of trouble finding seating. We waited on line for about 15 minutes. One member of our party is Celiac, and we were pleased to find an entire gluten free menu as well as gluten free pastries ready to go. I split a savory French toast and a sandwich with smoked salmon, eggs, and avocado with a friend. Everything was delicious! There are gender neutral bathrooms available on the first floor, and I believe there are additional bathrooms on the second floor. I recommend getting pastries to go! There is street parking available as well as paid lots. Overall, I was very happy with Tatte's! Everything was tasty and the presentation was incredible. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll definitely be paying them another visit!

Yelp
*Gluten Free Review * Great food and great atmosphere! Can be busy so be Saturday morning so be prepared to wait for a table but quick service. Lots of places to shop nearby. A must do if visiting the area! The meal on the left is GF.
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Very very busy little spot, but the line went quickly and we're lucky enough to get a table. It is a little noisy inside and feels crammed, but we were there during peak hours. The grilled cheese sandwhich is a 10/10- don't let the beet relish scare you off- it was delicious! The tiramisu was also great. I hope I can make it back again to try more of their menu.
google avatar

Natania C.

Yelp
This was one of my go-to cafes for working remotely. The Wi-Fi is high speed and consistent, and the coffee is great. My go-to coffee order at this place is the honey lavender latte. The food is also pretty good (albeit quite expensive) if you need to stay past dinner. The seats are not as comfortable as they could be though, and the cafe itself is a little loud.

Mei C.

Yelp
Breakfast from Tatte is always something my team looks forward to whenever we are in Boston for a race and this year did not disappoint. Always great pastries and breakfast sandwiches The only hiccup we had this year was one of the box of coffee was leaking (it wasn't closed tightly) and by the time we received it from delivery, the bottom fell out and we were left trying to pour coffee out of the plastic bag.
google avatar

Corrine C.

Yelp
A variety of food, including bread and cakes, and great coffee. However it is very loud and crowded during the weekends.

Yelp
Located in Harvard Square, Tatte Bakery & Cafe seems to be the place where everyone was the day after Labor Day. We made the line and waited quite a bit for both food and to be able to locate a table to sit down. We mainly came here as we were in the area and my companion wanted breakfast-style food. I personally think something else would have been better as it was the afternoon, but given that we were flying back that day, maybe he had a point. Anyway, he had an egg dish and I had some avocado toast. We accompanied this with sparkling water, coffee, and chocolate croissants. Honestly, the croissants were probably the best thing from this meal. They were reminiscent of Parisian croissants, so much so that my companion ordered more to go. The coffee was abysmal, tasting like what I imagine tar to taste like. The avocado toast was edible, but it was nothing out of this world. The eggs, well, I can't say, but my companion didn't complain. It made for a decent brunch at the end of the day, but meh, something was missing--a thought I found myself often having during my time in Boston.
google avatar

Paul Y.

Yelp
Sandwich was good, would definitely get again. Matcha lemonade was kind of flavorless unfortunately, and I typically love matcha. Service is fast paced given high volume of customers. Ambience leaves bit to be desired in that there's not enough seating for the number of people present. We also had a pistachio croissant, which was unfortunately burnt and kind of dry. It's a decent experience overall, but if you want something more quiet and peaceful this isn't the place.
google avatar

Jenessa H.

Yelp
The inside is very aesthetic! The service was great. I got the pistachio latte which was decent, maybe a bit too sweet. You could feel the graininess of the pistachio in the drink, which I actually liked. I got the pistachio cherry tart and it was pretty crumbly and I could not taste or see very much cherry- but it if it was just a pistachio tart, I would've loved it! Just missed the cherries. We also got the pan au chocolate and that was perfect!
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
super busy location probably because of the students but the pistachio latte was delicious and the kouign amann was pretty fluffy not as sweet as others. chicken pita so-so only

Yelp
Great service , friednly staff , great food ! I highly recommend Tattte for their food and delicious pastries !

Yelp
After I experienced a Berklee school of music tour, we thought, hmm, let's get something that is warm and to fresh us up! Well, there was Tatte!!! I went in and I'm like wait a minute here I want some tomato basil soup! So guess what I got? Some tomato basil soup! Also, I was feeling just a tad withered from my travels so I also thought it prudent that I also obtain a small coffee of sorts, and I did! Just a small hot coffee black, nothing too spectacular but boy did it warm the soul and raise my spirits! Necessary stop for anyone!

Yelp
I asked to have something removed from my sandwich and something added on the side (in a ramekin) and was told that "the chefs had a strict policy." If I am allergic to beets or anything else, I should be able to ask for something on the side. I think my being black played a role in this interaction because I was asked repeatedly after the fact if I was allergic. There are political reasons why I don't come here often but this experience underscored my choice.

Yelp
Tatte Bakery and Cafe is a great local chain in Massachusetts! I went to the Cambridge location and the moment I walked in, I was impressed with the modern decor, but more impressed with the food items! Tatte has a specialty item called Shakshuka, which is a North African hot dish served with poached eggs, spices, and tomato sauce. Overall it was tasty, and I would only recommend it to those who are tomato lovers. I ordered Lamb Meatball Shakshuka, and the flavors were great! The only drawback was my meatballs were served coldish lukewarm. I advised the store manager and he was very sincere and apologetic. He mentioned it to the cooks in the back and was willing to redo my order. I said it was alright. But then he offered a free beverage, and I obliged and asked for an iced coffee. He not only came and gave me my iced coffee, but also a slice of coffee cake. Both were delicious! What the store manager did is what I call textbook customer service. Despite the slight cooking error, Tatte went above and beyond to make sure I, as the customer, would still come back again. And again I will!

Yelp
Very cute, yuppie place, quick service. Food is mostly good but pricey. Asked staff what some of the desserts were, was given a very cursory answer

Yelp
Ok, I tried it again, still don't get the hype. Came around 2:30 on a Sunday and it was packed, ordered a salmon bowl and lamb hash. Total price came to a little over $40, and the food came out pretty quickly, but the salmon was very overcooked and the lamb has was weirdly sweet? Unfortunately I didn't get what I was looking for, as far as main plates go.
