"Longtime sports bar Tavern in the Square has permanently closed after nearly 20 years. The bar, known as TITS by regulars, did not provide a reason for the shutdown." - Erika Adams

"The White Horse is a big pub/sports bar in Allston. On the weekends it’s crowded with lots of students from BC and BU, but it’s a little slower during the week and a decent option if your in the neighborhood and want to just watch the game with a beer and some basic pub food." - Dan Secatore

"The Allston location of Tavern in the Square temporarily closed its doors in early July in order to perform renovations. The bar had been popular with the college crowd since opening in 2011, so closing during the summer when all the students leave the city made sense. Now, after two months and a rebranding, Tavern in the Square will reopen its doors tomorrow, August 28, as Tavern Allston — right in time for the return of all those college students. The redesigned space features a second bar and a state-of-the-art sound system, which Tavern will utilize during its music-themed weekend brunch parties. Unlike Tavern in the Square, Tavern is decorated with a series of big, bright murals. The colorful walls — painted by artists Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez, Kenji Nakayama, Erica Hagler, Adam O’Day, Upendo Taylor, Vizie Vazzar, and Markus Sebastiano — are juxtaposed by industrial furnishings, like exposed vents and overhanging warehouse lights. The interior and exterior aren’t the only things that have been overhauled — the entire menu (food and drink) has changed as well. New menu items include dishes such as bacon-wrapped mac and cheese bites, a massive burger topped with mac and cheese, a vegan tempura-style broccoli appetizer, and jalapeño popper taquitos. Tavern in the Square’s Allston reboot positions the restaurant to fit better in a neighborhood known less for cookie-cutter chains and more for its genuinely cool bars and eateries. If some Tavern in the Square locations look like they belong inside a strip mall or a food court — indeed, one location is in a food court — Tavern has differentiated itself enough to appear at home in a hip hood like Allston. 'It’s located in a neighborhood that thrives on creativity and individuality, so we choose to reopen as Tavern Allston with a totally new identity,' Katie Lang told Eater via email. Lang is the property and relationship manager for Broadway Hospitality Group, the parent company behind Tavern in the Square, the Playwright, the Broadway, and more. 'The interior screams just what this neighborhood embodies,' said Lang. 'The culinary and beverage program complements the artistic decor and will give everyone something to love across a wide variety of cuisines.' Tavern reopens at 4 p.m. tomorrow. Stop by to see the changes and eat a ridiculous burger topped with mac and cheese." - Terrence Doyle

"Avoid this place on Thursdays (at all costs). Otherwise, it’s not a bad place to have a 20-ounce Budweiser and watch some sports. We get it: It’s a chain, and it has an unfortunate nickname. It also has many screens for the many college hoops games you want to watch." - Terrence Doyle

Came on a Thursday for dinner because I had received gift cards as a present. It was pretty empty, and we could sit wherever. The server was friendly and checked up on us frequently, and the food and drinks came out quickly. I got the Party Girl Punch and we got Chicken Tenders, Fish Tacos, and the BBQ Chicken Pizza to share. This was definitely more than enough food, and I had low expectations, but it tasted pretty good for standard bar food. I probably wouldn't come back, especially not on a weekend, but we enjoyed our meal. Come in with low expectations and an empty stomach and you'll be happy.

Went here at ~1030 on a Saturday night and the line wrapped around the block. Wait time took just over an hour. Cover was $10 cash only (there is also an ATM at the door). Almost a 100% college kid crowd. There’s a large dance area with the DJ. Drinks were really weak which sucks. The large glass pictured is a Moscow Mule and costed $15. It was also the most hot and suffocating bar/club I have ever been to. I mean it must’ve been at least 90 degrees in there. Music was mostly pop songs from 2010s…Regardless of these issues, I still had a decently fun time!

2 stars is pretty generous. Service was really bad. Waited 20 minutes for the first round of drinks and it wasn’t busy at all. Servers just standing talking to the manager at the host stand. Bartenders work in slow motion, hard to get there attention.

I sat at the bar and ordered a Chardonnay. There was still lip makeup on my empty 9oz wine cup. I pointed it out to the bartender, and he swapped it out. I ordered the Bayou Chicken Pasta $20 [🔥 / gf] spicy blackened chicken, sweet corn, jalapeño, bacon, tomatoes, parmesan cream (sub GF pasta +2) at 18:20pm (6:20p). I am waiting to see how I am treated further. I expect subpar treatment from young egotistical college bartenders. There is a nice mixture of people so far, but it is generally empty, and I am here by myself. 18:33pm Another nice server came and delivered my bowl of food. My first bite was subpar. It wasn't as hot as I expected. Not a lot of flavor and bland. I wanted to add something spicy to compensate for what was missing. I asked the bartender if I could have Siracha or Buffalo sauce. He brought back Mc.Ilhenny Co Tabasco Pepper Sauce. He said it's going to take a minute to get the Buffalo and Saracha Sauce. Buffalo Sauce so far seemed to work well. Sriracha kinda works well if your chicken is not well seasoned. They did an average job. Which is what I expect. Buffalo makes the most sense to me. So far, I expect these 2 wines, Blackened chicken experience to be a $50 total, including tax. They had trivia nights here, but I wasn't in the mood. Foods average. Service average. Drinks are as expected. It's social but a setup for college type activities. So far, my unbiased opinion is that for the city, they are doing a great job. 1 male and 2 - 3 female servers. Cheap drinks. Attracting food and a nice dim atmosphere. Could the food be better, yes! But 4 of 5 people can't tell the difference. Can the drinks be better? No, the bartender was attentive, but service was sub-par. I'm not excited to come back, especially to the same bartender.

Loved the vibe here. You should try the BANG BANG BROCCOLI. It is literally the best appetizer and the best version of brocolli I have had. I wish they had some vegetarian options for the main course. Everything else is good. You should visit this place if you looking to chill with friends or if you want to watch a game

I've visited this restaurant twice, my first time I had a burger that in all honesty didn't taste very good, but I just assumed it was an off day. I decided to give this place a second chance on a Friday night with my girlfriend. We started off with the Mac and cheese starter which was about the tastiest thing we had that night. Next we ordered an espresso burger and a fried chicken sandwich, what we received was attractive looking, but was lacking where the food actually mattered. The chicken in my sandwich was laughably thin, even with the breading on it! That chicken was thinner than the slice of tomato that was in the sandwich, even though it tasted o.k, but in the end we were left with an underwhelming and sticky experience from that chicken that was drenched in what seemed to be super glue mixed with maple syrup. My girlfriend didn't even finish her burger, I tried a bite and we both agreed it didn't taste like what we paid for. Our waiter and service was great, but at the end of the night I was apologizing to my girl for giving this place a second chance. If you want decent food at a decent price, don't come here.

I like Tavern in the Square, but this location turns into a gross flophouse of a nightclub after 11 PM on the weekends. Based on the vomit, urine, and broken glass all over the men’s room floor as well as the numerous physical altercations and customers throwing beer bottles that I witnessed within the span of a half hour of being in this place, I think it’s safe to assume that either people are being admitted when they are belligerently drunk or they are being over served on premises… either one is a problem as it appears security doesn’t have a leash on their customers and it doesn’t seem like a safe place to be. Definitely not a good spot for the 25+ crowd who don’t drink til the point of blacking out. Steer clear!

My friend and I came here before a concert and are so glad we did. Our server Alannah was amazing - she was so helpful and provided such great service. We will definitely recommend this restaurant to our friends after this experience!
