Our friends took us out for my birthday to this fabulous Greek restaurant in Bayside. We realized we had been to the one in Astoria with a cousin, and it was beyond amazing, so we weren't sure if this would be as good. It was even better. Unlike the Astoria location, this one is bright, white, and modern. We found a parking spot right across the street, which is almost unheard of on Bell Blvd, but we were lucky. The kitchen is open in the back so you can see everything. We were seated right away at about 6pm on a Friday night, and shortly after, the place was packed. We were served a basket of olive bread with olive tapenade to start. It was hard to pick what to eat because of so many good looking choices passing our table. Our waiter, Costas, (I'm sorry if I got it wrong Constantine) was wonderful. We never had to look for him. He checked on us all the time. The Executive Chef also stopped at every table to make sure all was good. Oh, it was! We started with appetizers for the 4 of us. We got grilled octopus, a large Villager salad, and smelts. Yes, I said smelts. You can now say you've heard of them. These tiny fish were my favpart of the whole meal. My husband was daring, so we tried them, as we remembered maybe eating them as youngsters. They are smaller than anchovies and fried with a very light batter so you could still taste the fish without it being "fishy". We had this great beer that we reordered, and they wound up bringing an extra one. When they were told, they told us to keep it. Even though we were full after apps, our friends ordered the lamb chops to share with lemon potatoes. Yum to both. I ordered an appetizer size of grilled calamari and a vegetable of broccoli rabe with feta - my second favorite of the night. Hubby decided just to eat what was there as he was full. I was told that they don't serve dessert - they SERVE you dessert. Without asking, galaktoboureko was brought to the table for each of us. It was sooo good, but hubby and I brought ours home with all our leftovers. When I came back from the restroom, I was immediately served with a giant Sparkler in a glass with everyone singing Happy Birthday to me. Never leave the table on your birthday if you don't want people singing to you. I was surprised and happy. DYI, my birthday was 3 months ago, but we were all too busy to make this wonderful night happen before. Go to Taverna Ky.... in Bayside. You will leave fulfilled, happy, and wishing your stomach could hold more.
