Taverna is a brightly-decorated, modern Greek restaurant with beautifully presented dishes. The small plates and entrees are all meant to be shared, and we started with a trio of dips: the creamy Tzatziki served with slices of thick pita bread grilled with olive oil; the slightly spicy Tirokafteri (spicy feta dip) served with cucumbers; and my favorite, the creamy, smooth, seafoody Taramosalata (cod roe spread) served with potato chips. All three dips had amazing flavors, but my one complaint was that there weren't enough of any of the dipping items (pita, cucumbers, potato chips) for the amount of spreads that came with each order. However, we also got a side of the Horiatiko Psomi (housemade village style bread), which had a soft, crusty texture and had caramelized onions and Kalamata olives mixed into the dough.
My favorite course consisted of the seafood small plates. Our selections included the Garides Skaras, six huge grilled wild Gulf prawns served with shishito peppers; and the Oktapodaki, two massive grilled Spanish octopus tentacles served over a Santorini fava bean puree and Aegean capers. But the most creative small plate was the Kalamarakia Tiganita, or Monterey Bay calamari rings and tentacles, which were deep-fried (though not battered), dusted with a spicy chili powder, and served over skordalia (garlic mashed potatoes) and wedges of citrus supremes, which balanced out the crispy calamari with a bright, acidic flavor.
And finally came our entrees. The Plaki was a hearty stew made with baked gigante beans, tomatoes, and onions, topped with crumbled feta cheese, scallions, and cilantro, and the stew had a delicious, natural flavor from all the different fresh vegetables. Finally, we had the highly recommended Arnaki, three massive Superior Farms lamb chops grilled to medium and served with fried patates (potato wedges), potato puree, and finished with lamb jus. To go with the entrees, we also got a side of Horta, or steamed local chard mixed with a flavorful combination of lemon, garlic, and bukovo red peppers for a hint of spice. Overall, everything we had here was high quality, flavorful, and beautifully presented! That said, the menu prices were high, even for Palo Alto, but the beautiful atmosphere and delicious food still made for a great dining experience.
