"Tawla, which brought an upscale elegance to Eastern Mediterranean dining in the Mission District, has closed. The restaurant served its final dinner of puffy house pita bread and mezze plates in December, chef/partner Joseph Magidow confirms. The business opened at 206 Valencia Street in 2016. With Tawla, owner Azhar Hashem, a longtime Google marketer turned restaurateur, sought to challenge San Francisco’s conception of Mediterranean food. Tawla eschewed falafel and hummus, described by Hashem as 'Eastern Mediterranean Cuisine 1.0,' in favor of deeper cuts from Greece, Turkey, and the Levant — Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, and Hashem’s native Jordan. 'Our goals were not just to beat the odds on opening a full-service, mid-range restaurant in a dining culture which is increasingly hostile towards that model,' Magidow says, 'but to simultaneously provoke a transformation in the SF dining public’s attitudes towards the superlative cuisine of the Eastern Mediterranean.' That worthy project proved difficult in practice. Magidow calls the closure 'death by a thousand cuts,' with no single factor to blame. 'The deck was always stacked against us, and I am proud that we were able to achieve what we did,' says Magidow. After years at Delfina, Locanda, and now Tawla, Magidow will take some time off to pursue pop-ups and consulting. Hashem has not responded to requests for comment. Update, January 11: In a lengthy post on Medium, Hashem finally addressed the closure of her restaurant, blaming worker turnover and the high cost of living in San Francisco. The former Google worker also pointed a finger at local tech employees who 'don’t understand what’s made San Francisco special including not understanding what it means to support small businesses and what it means to offer a high-quality food product.'" - Caleb Pershan

"Tawla isn’t always its busiest on Mondays — but on June 18th, it’s liable to be packed with members of Tasting Collective for that group’s first San Francisco dinner: An eight course, family-style meal at $50 a head. Tawla chef Joseph Magidow will also be on the menu, so to speak, presenting dishes and answering questions." - Caleb Pershan

"Meanwhile, cozy Valencia Street Mediterranean restaurant Tawla is rolling out Sunday brunch. The whole menu of white or red shakshuka, the restaurant’s popular house bread, and a full Turkish-style breakfast are available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m." - Caleb Pershan

Came for brunch and they were understaffed. We waited near 20 min to be seated even though we had made a reservation and the restaurant was half empty. It's a beautiful space and great ambiance. Brunch food was good (really enjoyed the house bread!) though some of the mains seemed overpriced.

Great food. The small dishes were really good. The wait staff were really attentive and polite. The food offerings diverse. The bread is really good with the sauces of the various dishes. Price reasonable.

We got the chefs tasting menu, which was a LOT of food! It was a reasonable price at 49/person, but I found the taste profile to be a little lacking. There were a lot of vegetable dishes, but they were overpowered with oils. Maybe that's just what jordinian cuisine is, but I personally didn't like how oily it was

The tawla feast is no joke! It's seriously a lot of food and super delicious! So get a group of 8 before you try it out.

Such a promising menu, friendly staff and lovely ambience. Unfortunately the execution was slightly lacking. The food is good quality but doesn't quite deliver the tasty punch especially given the price. On the upside the portion sizes are huge...expect to have a hard time finishing everything you're served. Plus an excellent selection of wine.

Service and food are incredible. Servers are extremely friendly and accommodating. I have a non-life threatening nut allergy and they were diligent and accommodating with dishes that normally have nuts. The food is unique. I'm an adventurous eater and I've been doing it for years. I didn't think I could discover so many new flavours and textures in one place. It's great guys, go check Tawla out some night out.

Amazing restaurant with a modern take on classic Lebanese dishes such as Kousa, Samkeh Harrah and deserts such as Riz Be Haleeb.
