The 38 Best Restaurants in Indianapolis, Indiana | Eater

"For 114 years, Taylor’s Bakery has been making quintessential baked goods, the kind that come boxed in white cardboard, tied tight with red and white bakers’ twine. The operation started as a downtown grocer before ditching the veggies and canned goods and moving further uptown in the 1960s. Eventually, a second location opened in Fishers in 2003. Little has changed with the bakery program over the century, though, including a few dough mixers originally purchased in the ’50s. The pies, cookies, bread, and everything else is still made from scratch and decorated by hand. Must-try dish: Grab some dog treats for a furry friend alongside your human treats." - Brian Garrido

Google
Taylor's may be known for their donuts, but they're cakes are just as good. I ordered my son's First Communion cake online (easy, quick) and it was ready when I requested. The people who work at Taylor's are one of a kind. They are so sweet and they want you to be happy with your purchase. The cake was not only beautiful, but it tasted delicious.

We are the couple who ate our wedding cake topper the weekend after our wedding. We didn’t freeze it and wait to eat it on our first anniversary. But we did make it a tradition to buy an 8” wedding cake every year to eat on our anniversary. A few years ago our caterer stopped selling wedding cakes, and that’s when we found Taylor’s Bakery. This is our 3rd or 4th year buying our anniversary wedding cake from Taylor’s, and every year we have an amazing experience with them. I always call them to order it, and they are so accommodating and friendly. I don’t know if they have an online ordering option, but if they don’t, they should. Don’t get me started on how magnificent their cakes are. Sublime would be a good word for them. Heavenly. I have been to of the great bakeries in Indianapolis, and Taylor’s is still at the top of my list. We will use them as long as they stay in business or until both of us are dead!

I love Taylor’s Bakery! They always do such a great job and their cakes are top tier. I will choose them for every birthday and celebration!

Google
I stopped at Taylor’s bakery. On my way to work. Service is always quick and friendly. The pastries are delicious. We recently ordered a baby shower cake and they worked with us to provide the perfect decoration for our theme. I highly recommend this great bakery.

Google
I wanted to visit Taylor’s bakery since I’ve known about this place. They are a family owned bakery specialising in custom cakes and wide range of donuts. I ordered their simple glazed donut and turtle for to-go. The service was swift and smooth. I really liked looking at the pictures of the history of the bakery.

Google
I've bought many cakes from this bakery. This time I ordered online and it wasnt super smooth but it worked out. The cake was beautiful but dry. This is the first time we have experienced that. Saying this, I will still buy cakes from Taylor's because 19 out of 20 isn't bad.

Google
If I could give this place 10⭐️ I would! I called yesterday on Valentines Day (you can imagine it was probably a busy day) I just found out the gender of my best friends baby and I wanted to order them a gender reveal cake so they could do it this weekend. Such a quick turn around, they were able to pick it up the next day at 10 am. It was perfect, simple, and just so easy. I called and placed the order on friday over the phone as I’m in a completely different state and payed for it and then my best friend picked it up the next day. I cannot get over just how BLUE the cake is, so vibrant. Thank you so much Taylor’s Bakery!🩵 plus of course the cake also taste good as I was told!

Yelp
I live out of state & ordered my nephew's graduation cake from Taylor's Bakery. Friday afternoon I called to see if the cake was ready for pickup, I said "Hi my name is (blank, blank), I was calling to see if the cake was ready for pickup. The woman who answered the phone responded with "How would I know?! " So I asked if she could check, repeating my name. The call was on speakerphone and my large family (who live in Indianapolis) heard her. This was our first time ordering from Taylor's Bakery and were really shocked by the snarky disrespect. But since we were picking up food from you, we opted to not say anything at the time. The cake was good the online ordering process was easy but I would highly suggest that you work on your customer service. Thank you.

Yelp
My neighbors are getting married this weekend, and I got it into my head that I needed to gift them petits fours with hearts on them. I don't know where I got this idea, but it seemed like the perfect casual wedding gift to receive from a neighbor. And once I got it into my head, I was determined to make it happen! My search for these mini cakes led me to Taylor's Bakery. They have a selection of petits fours available in their bakery case (Easter themed right now). I ordered my desserts online to be picked up the next day, because I wanted hearts. The petits fours are 2 inches by 2 inches, which is much larger than I thought they would be. I was thinking they'd be bite-sized, but they're more like three or four bites. When I showed up to pick up my order, they didn't have them ready, and I think they had lost my order, but they quickly added hearts to some blank petits fours. All of their petits fours are the same almond-scented white cake with a thin coconut icing. I was hoping they'd have a filling or something in them (a layer of jam would have been nice!), but no, they're just cake and icing. I got a flower-decorated petits four for myself to eat in my car as I drove home (aka the best way to eat anything), and it was so soft and melted in my mouth. It was the kind of cake that didn't even require chewing. Yum! They are known for their cakes here, and I can see why. They also have a big selection of other baked goods, like bars (raspberry and lemon), brownies, donuts, Danishes, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls and lots more. I picked up two cute Easter cookies for my kids, which were decorated with blue icing and jelly bean eggs. Taylor's Bakery has been an Indianapolis institution for 112 years! Which means you need to visit this bakery at least once. While I was there, I saw several people come in and order all kinds of goodies. They had a steady stream of customers. I love that Taylor's was hoppin' on a weekday afternoon.

Yelp
I guess I just don't understand the draw. The baked goods were dry and seemed day old to me. Service was great and the people working were very sweet! I liked that they tied the box with string. The eclair was the highlight. The turtle bar was dry and unappealing to me. Raspberry bar at least had more flavor. Maybe I got the wrong things, but I was not impressed.

Yelp
Taylor's Bakery is a true staple in Indy, and I've loved this place since I was a child. We typically get our birthday cakes from here because, "It has to be from Taylor's." The cakes are always delicious, and the service is consistently on point and the staff is sooo nice and welcoming. However, I've had a couple of experiences recently that have been a bit frustrating. On the past two occasions I've gone to order a cake, the order has been wrong when I've gone to pick it up. I think the communication between the person taking the order and the pastry chef could be improved, as I know a couple other people who have gone through the same thing. It's a bit of a letdown, especially when you're expecting a 5 minute pick up order that turns into 20 because they have to redo your order the way it should have been. That said, I'm hopeful they can address this issue, because aside from this hiccup, I have no other complaints!

Yelp
Taylor's has been in our neighborhood for years. The minute you walk in the door, if not a line, you are welcomed and they are ready to take your order. My favorite is angel food cake and iced sugar cookies. Although I would never complain, some of the bakery items are too sweet for me. One good thing is they often have samples out for you to try That way, you can decide for yourself on the sweetness. It is always clean, cases show no finger prints and the waitstaff always looks fresh and ready to serve. Would I go there again? For sure, I will be picking up a candy cane birthday angel food cake next week

Yelp
Taylor's is a bakery with history in Indianapolis, no fuss or frills, they have sheet cakes ready to go, and make themselves available for custom orders, morning donuts, cookies- just about everything. Their notorious icing is perfect for any occasion & their customer service is the cherry on top. This is my favorite place to just pop in and grab a sheet cake, or some cookies.

Yelp
This bakery was sssssoooooo good. I wish we had one in Northern California. The customer service was great. The options were overwhelmingly awesome, and the flavor of everything (yes I had like 5 items, don't judge me) were delicious. Go see them if you haven't. They will not disappoint.

Michelle L.

Yelp
Great selection & all sweets have been very good. Friendly service. I've bought a variety & we've always been pleased.

Yelp
I have had baked goods from Taylor's and they have always been good but today was the first day that I went to their store. A Friday afternoon so there were other customers but it wasn't so busy that I felt rushed. The lady at the counter was friendly and pleasant with me. I ordered donuts and danish and a couple eclairs. This is definitely a solid place to go for baked goods and should be the season for them to have key lime pies. I didn't see them in the case but have had them before and they are delicious. That big flat glazed donut in the back of that pic of treats on the plate was amazing and would be dangerous around any lover of sweets!

Steven P.

Yelp
Good service and products. Their cakes are my go to for special occasions. They will help with ideas and recommendations.

Yelp
A previous bakery canceled my order for a friend's celebration. Well, another friend suggested I reach out to Taylor Bakery, and I am very thankful for the suggestion. Their butter cookies were delicious with icing was enjoyed by all in attendance. The team did an amazing job, and the service was absolutely amazing. I look forward to using Taylor Bakery in the future to enjoy one of the yummy cakes I saw on their website.

Yelp
I have been buying treats from Taylor's for over 15 years. You are greeted as soon as you walk in the door. Even if there's a line, you will get waited on quickly. I find this place very nostalgic. From baked goods to ice cream you can get your sweet tooth taken care of. I always get their seasonal decorated cookies. I do seem to think that the icing recipe has changed. It's not as creamy and soft as it used to be. The last couple of times I've got cookies the icing seemed hard and without as much flavor. Their cakes are delicious! If you want to order a custom cake, you will need to go in and pre-order. They have a lot of photos to choose your desired design.

Yelp
I picked up the cake for my daughter's birthday and it had a huge crack down the center of it. I asked the staff if they could fix it because I paid over $50 for the cake and they refused to correct their mistake. Later on, on of our guests discovered a long strand of hair on the inside of the cake. Been a loyal customer to this bakery for over 7 years. Never coming back.

Donna P.

Yelp
Horrible. I have been going to Taylor's bakery for more than 20 years now. I feel the quality has gone downhill since it changed owners. I will not go back.
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Taylor's has been one of Indianapolis premier bakeries for decades. When you really wanted to celebrate your birthday in style, a cake from Taylor's was the only cake you wanted. Since it is on the other side of town from me, I had not had the opportunity to go to Taylor's until recently. It is nice to know that some things never change. We were having a Mardi Gras Party for work and I wondered if Taylor's might have a King Cake. I knew they used to have them but was unsure if they still made them for Fat Tuesday. Well not only do they still make them, they are as good, if not better, than I remember. The cake they made was wonderful. The flakey dough with soft filling was tempting and tasty. My office mates were taken with the flavor and tradition of this cake and made sure to devour it in a short time. Thank you Taylor's for making this a party to remember.
google avatar

Roberta L.

Yelp
Always fresh and delicious you will not be disappointed. The alligator pastries are a personal favorite. Go early before the best items sell out. Great for wedding and special occasion cake.

Daisy D.

Yelp
Awful!!!! I got a bear claw and Thai thing couldn't be less than a week old. No flavor and dry as a brick. I am sad this was the first time I got to come here. The other pastries we just ok I got a donut, a petite four a bear claw and a fried danish. For 12 dollars... I want my money back but don't wanna drive back there.
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
Not sure if it is me getting older or what, however the donuts are average and nothing above and beyond shops near by. $2 a donut seems a tad steep. Again, me getting older. I enjoy what they have to offer but other places are offering the same and at cheaper prices. I liked their red velvet donuts and they don't have them on a regular. I liked the key lime pretzels but they don't have them anymore. They have ice cream, which is over priced, and they now have pot pies. I can't comment on the pot pies, just wanted others to be aware they are being sold now. A lot going on now at Taylor's Bakery.

Yelp
Taylor's has been around since 1962. The history of the founder, Mr. Dennis Taylor, is so rich and remarkable. The Taylor family has been providing great food and service since 1913. In, 2005, my dear late mother-in-law, said the ONLY place she would buy my husband and my wedding came from was Taylor's. I still remember stopping by in 2015, with my then fiancè for a wedding cake sample. The owner served us different varieties of delicious and most samples. After finally deciding on a cake, I mentioned how I do not like angel food cake as we were looking at their display case. The owner, with confidence, said "you will love ours. Here, take this home." He gave me a free loaf of angel food cake. Guess what? It was indeed the best I ever had. Stop by Taylor's Bakery. The service is wonderful, the selection of bakery goods is delicious, and the history is rich.

Yelp
Taylor's Bakery does not miss. Always fresh always friendly employees there the baked goods are amazing. I literally get my birthday cake from here every year.

Yelp
It had been awhile since my last order from Taylor's so I was excited to return for a birthday cake for my son. We're big fans of anything almond flavored over here so we had their vanilla cake that has a tinge of almond in the batter. I opted for a smooth round cake so I could add my own decorations at home. The cake and ordering process were both super smooth I cakes in two days before picking it up and preferred over the phone. I fought the urge to buy any donuts or treats while inside. Overall, a tasty and great experience at one of Indy's classics.
google avatar

Ronda W.

Yelp
My husbands favorite places to order birthday cakes. Always fresh and made to order with advanced notice. Service is fast and friendly, they welcome everyone with a smile. I love being able to smell and sample freshest baked deserts as I wait for my cake pick up or add extra goodies to my order.

Yelp
I love supporting locally own businesses, and this bakery has a long history in Indy and another location in Fishers. I like to get a dozen donuts to take to work, and they have boxes already made up which makes it very quick and easy. They have a nice display of donuts, cakes, breads, cookies and other sweet treats. I want to order a birthday cake at some point. Staff has always been nice, and the donuts are always fresh and delicious. I love the Indy location, and it is one of my favorite places to stop. The only drawback is they don't open until 8am, but a lot of times they are open by 7:30am or so.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
We ordered a carrot cake for Easter and it was delicious!! So so good. And they gave us a free bag or rolls with it. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Mariano G.

Yelp
I came here a few weeks ago to celebrate Fat Tuesday. I was looking for a place to find traditional European paczki. Taylor's was the first place that popped up upon a Google search for paczki in Indianapolis. I ordered a dozen for the office. The doughnuts came in 4 different flavors a lemon one, Bavarian cream, mixed berry, and apple cinnamon. When I actually started to eat them, they just tasted like a standard jelly doughnut with paczki flavors. The doughnuts seemed to consist of 80% jelly and 20% dough, which, to me, felt like an uncomfortable ratio--very different from the paczkis I've had before. All of their other products looked really good and I'll have to check out the king cake next year!

Vic I.

Yelp
Good stuff guaranteed I have been shopping there since I was a kid. I love their coffee cakes
google avatar

Karley C.

Yelp
Personally, I do not understand the hype about this place but the locals seem to love it! The line moves very quick once you are inside, but you'll need to make your decisions fast if it is a busy day.

Pam T.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about Taylor's Bakery. I have ordered many special occasion cakes and they have all been delicious and perfect every time. Recently, I had ordered a cake through my place of employment and there was a problem with the date and time. Our contact person "Yo" literally saved the day/special occasion by stepping up and delivering the cake in less than a 2-hour notice. Not only was the cake delicious but it was exactly the way we had ordered it (same design, colors, etc.). They did not have to do this on such short notice and we truly appreciated them saving the day. Their customer service is always top notch!!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Linda F.

Yelp
Customer service and friendliness were awesome! When I arrived to pick up my custom-ordered full sheet cake, the frosting color and design did not match my specific written and drawn instructions. Without a moment's hesitation, they offered to redo it and proceeded to scrape it all off and completely revise it. It was completed in less than 30 minutes while I waited. And this was on a very busy Saturday with a line of customers out the door! They saved the day and my sanity!! You just don't often see this kind of service anywhere else.
google avatar

Brady R.

Yelp
Hours outside of the 9-5 or other bakeries closer to downtown have kept me from Taylor's for too long. I'm so glad I checked them out recently. Came in on a whim before they were closing, expecting to be sold out of nearly everything. Not the case at all! We got a few pastries, a donut or two, cookie.... expecting to hand out $$$ but came out only spending $. I'm a fan. They also have dog treats and birthday cakes, frozen quiches, and more. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Tomi A.

Yelp
I bought a bunch of goodies for my Galentine/Birthday party. Communication was seamless, and the delivery was on time! I ordered the Rosette cake, chocolate-covered pretzels, chocolate meltaways, and cookie platter and everyone loved it all. My absolute favorite was the cake, it was very moist, fluffy, and delicious. One of my friends said it was the best cake she had ever had in her life! Overall, Taylor's is amazing, and I can't wait to use them for my 4th of July party.
google avatar

Melissa J.

Yelp
A go to for special occasions. The white cake w buttercream frosting is a no brainer. We have been getting cakes from Taylor's for years!!
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
My son and I have a Saturday morning ritual of visiting the Broad Ripple Farmer's Market followed by a stop at Taylor's to pick up chocolate frosted donuts (for me) and donut holes (for him). Always fresh, always delicious. And the employees are so nice. I've ordered custom birthday cakes here now and then as well. A great local business I'm happy to support.
google avatar

Emily Elizabeth K.

Yelp
This is the second year in a row I've brought my boys here on Halloween morning to pick out a special Halloween cake. They've got a cake for everyone. I like that the prices vary- so that everyone can walk out with a cake (or cake order) that fits both their needs and budget. We come here all throughout the year for a coffee & pick-me-up. This is one of my family's favorite locally owned businesses. It's also a great place to stop in for a dozen donuts to surprise your coworkers!
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Have been getting donuts for a while but this week was the first time to get some other items. We bought some eclairs, cookies and a cheesecake square. The eclairs were only ok. The filling was delicious but the pasty was too thick and dry. Cookies were good. Always like their donuts, large and lots of filling in the Bavarian and jelly ones. Reasonable prices.
google avatar

Mariam W.

Yelp
If you like the taste of mediocre cookies from WalMart or Target then you will love Taylor's Bakery. I've stopped in twice and each time I've purchased only cookies, sugar and chocolate chip. Both times I felt I could have baked a cookie with far more taste. Do they even put butter in their dough??? Seriously, I wonder! Also the cookies are very crumbly and dry. I'm ok with dry but if I bite into it and feel like it turns into saw dust... that's not a cookie I desire. This is said to be a family run bakery for a long time now, so I wanted to give it a shot. Maybe a while ago it was better but now I think I will stick with my favorite bakery - Rene's in Broadripple.

Skyler T.

Yelp
I ordered a personalized sheet pan cake for a work celebration. The initial phone call when ordering the cake was seamless with great customer service. They met all expectations and the cake was beautiful. Awesome customer service and friendly staff!!

Yelp
Dare I say Taylor's Bakery was lifechanging? I'd been craving the perfect cinnamon roll for 3-4 months, and this time my family decided to drive way out of our way to find the best one. It was pouring rain, but totally worth it. We were in heaven at Taylor's. We ended up getting a ridiculously large variety of pastries for three people. The winners for me were the apple fritters and donut holes, which come in glazed, chocolate, and pumpkin spice. The donut hole flavors were each so delicious and so different that I'd strongly recommend getting a mix of them. Prices were amazing, and my only regret is that I didn't buy more pastries to try. The only disappointing part was that the cinnamon roll was just OK, so I continue my quest. I think they just used regular buttercream-type frosting instead of cream cheese. What a shame! I will 100 percent be back to Taylors.
google avatar

Dale D.

Yelp
I had heard a lot about this bakery. I know they have one in Fishers also. I went in and purchased several pastries, a cake, and a pecan pie for the holidays. I also bought some homemade caramels. All of the items were great. The staff and service was very friendly and I was proud to support a local business vs going big box. Great job, great product, great service! I highly recommend them.
google avatar

Laquetta D.

Yelp
I have to admit that I used to purposely avoid this place because of my loyalty to my favorite place Long's. But I gotta say, Taylor's donuts are really good. I do like the fact that they accept credit/debit cards unlike my aforementioned fave. Their selection is really nice. They have donuts, cookies, tarts, other kinds of pastries and they make cakes! Didn't know they make cakes but they do and they're beautiful. They had a couple on display. Their lemon tart-I loooove lemon and it was delicious. Not too overwhelming and the tart wasn't too hard. I liked their raspberry one too. They have samples of their treats on the counter. Not sure if that changes but, they had the original donut to sample when I visited. That's a nice touch for first timers if they're not sure if what to get or for those that haven't made up their minds yet. They have multiple people taking orders so it makes the process a little faster. And as I mentioned before they accept debit/credit cards. So Taylor's I won't be avoiding you any more. I'll happily stop by and and pick some treats.
google avatar

DeAndrea B.

Yelp
By far my favorite bakery in the city. Their treats are the absolute best! I purchase all of my birthday cakes from here for my family and when I host a career fair I purchase my employer gifts. Although typically friendly, if I have any complaint it would just be that the customer service is not always great, which is understandable for such an operation,m. However 9/10 times I have had remarkably great service and I have even better treats! I would definitely recommend
google avatar

Chrissy A.

Yelp
Someone purchased me a birthday cake from here a couple years ago and I knew there were no other options for my girls sweet 16. Winter storm be damned we find out they were closing at noon. We wake up early and brave it. We drive from Brownsburg to 62nd and allisonville luckily the roads were not bad. Plenty of amazing cakes in the case. They even have little serving cakes. So I get 2 individual cakes one for each of my girls and a double layer cake. It was $38.50 which I did not think was bad for a special event. The place was hoping w people getting donuts and cookies. The staff was super friendly. I cannot wait to dig into this cake.

Torri B.

Yelp
Never thought I'd have another bad experience with Taylor's for my birthday. Last year, we went to pick up my cake and there was a big crack down the middle of the cake. This year, there were two issues. On the original day for cake pickup (June 21st-my actual birthday), my sister went to view and get the cake. To her dismay, they made the cake order incorrectly. Instead of a yellow cake w/ caramel icing, she was given a cake with chocolate icing. Now, my family has been ordering the same order for my birthday ever year, so she knew immediately that it was wrong. She spoke with management and they said she could come back the following day to get the correct cake order. They still gave her the chocolate cake free of charge because the cake was needed for my birthday (side note, I've never been a fan of chocolate icing on a cake). To see that cake...it was just so disappointing. So the next day we got the caramel icing Birthday cake and when we pulled it out the box, the cake was coming apart (insert facepalm). I tired to enjoy the cake, but it didnt taste right. And the caramel icing even looked darker than normal. I hate to say it, but a family tradition might come to an end. It looks like my next cake might be from somewhere else, not Taylor's. I still love the donut holes though.

Katie R.

Yelp
Taylor's bakery exceeds my expectations every time! We ordered my son's birthday cake for the second year in a row and it was delicious and decorated just as described. I also ordered a pastry tray that was a hit with party guests. Their online ordering makes everything so easy and pick up is even easier. I will always use Taylor's bakery!
google avatar

Jayne S.

Yelp
I purchased a carrot cake (8 pieces) from Taylor's for my birthday last week. Absolutely delicious! I loved it and it was a hit with my family. The cake is moist and nicely spiced. The icing was similar to a cream cheese icing, but was sweeter with less of a cream cheese flavor. I would absolutely go back to Taylor's for another carrot cake or a different cake that I was looking to purchase!

Faith L.

Yelp
I got my bridal shower cookies from here and they were not only delicious but the cutest cookies I've ever had!! I will definitely be going here for all my baked goodies in the future. Thank you so much!! Faith
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
In short: best cake doughnuts in Indy. The sprinkle doughnuts are a personal favorite. The fried danishes are intoxicating. And the doughnut holes are addictive. But it doesn't stop there...old school bakery counter serving up everything from breakfast pasteries to cakes and cookies platters, flavored caramel popcorn...even their own brand of ice cream! Custom sheet- and classic wedding-style cakes are always on display, available for order. Fun seasonal items are available throughout the year--recently, they've been taking orders for king cakes. Credit cards accepted. Fast, friendly service. Anything you get tastes like a special treat when it comes wrapped up in a Taylor's box.

Larry C.

Yelp
We got the raspberry angel food cake with raspberry icing. Delicious !! Best cake l've ever had!!

Lou L.

Yelp
Ok, I fancy myself a self made expert on sweets. I love to eat, and gave quite a sweet tooth. I have eaten baked goods all over the planet, but I fear that old school family run bakeries like this are a dying noble breed. I found this place on instinct, and drove out of my way on a hunch, and it was so worth the trip! The cinnamon Danish I bought my family is one of the best things I have ever had in my mouth. I am now having fantasy thoughts of driving back there from Chicago. Just as precious as the delicious cake was the classic old school service of the dear ladies behind the counter. They offered me tasty samples, and steered me in the right direction of the individual fried Danish, which I inhaled before I reached the car. Decadent! Wow...just get here. Enjoy. And patronize this (and other great mom and pop businesses) so they don't disappear from the landscape. We can't afford to lose a gem like this.
