Tony Fortuna, Upper East Side’s ‘Ultimate Restaurateur,’ Has Died | Eater NY

"A luxury steakhouse with a legendary bar scene that has operated for more than 25 years, the Manhattan T-Bar is the kind of place where celebrity chefs such as Geoffrey Zakarian and pastry chef Francois Payard sit alongside neighborhood regulars; after a lease issue it moved from East 73rd Street to a sleek townhouse on East 60th Street and is run in partnership with developer/designer Derek Axelrod, who vowed to carry on the same consistent product and experience that Tony Fortuna delivered." - Melissa McCart

This was overall a pleasant spot for a quiet Sunday brunch. Pleasant decor and a menu of elevate brunch plates. I went with the burger and it was a winner - the quality of the beef was top notch and it was perfectly cooked. My partner’s avocado toasted with poached eggs was also quite nice. Service was a bit lackluster and there were a couple of times it was hard to get the attention of our waiter. On the strength of the food though, I’d give this place another try.

Words can’t explain how disappointed I am in this establishment. My family and I come here often: whenever we don’t want to venture out into the city, after shopping in Manhasset, or if we need somewhere more quiet to host groups of friends. The food isn’t spectacular (it has a few highlights like the squid ink linguine though some dishes like the porterhouse needs work). But it still has a decent ambiance to bring guests to, especially when you’re tired of T-bar and the other options nearby. We came here on Mother’s Day weekend (May 10th) for dinner straight from home and left our car in valet. Usually we self-park when possible but it was too packed to do so. We left late at night after dinner going straight home, and the next day (Sunday) we saw that the back right wheel of our car was scratched by something green. I immediately called T-bar that night and they told me to call the valet service, who very unprofessionally blew up at me on the phone. Naturally, the valet service then informed me a week later that no one knows anything and hasn’t provided me any details of where our Porsche was parked or camera coverage. I literally have a time stamped snap of me unloading presents from the car right before we left for dinner that shows the vehicle was unscratched, and yet NO one has taken any responsibility or has had the decency to follow up. We immediately went back to talk to the manager who assured us he’d speak with the owner and give us a resolution. But it has now passed FATHERS DAY and all that has happened is them passing the ball to each other and telling us there’ll be an update next week. There’s still been no resolution OVER A MONTH — absolutely zero regard for their customers that come here regularly. They've completely failed to take responsibility when something went wrong under their watch. Until this is properly resolved, we won't be returning, and I'd strongly advise others to avoid or risk having your own vehicle damaged with no accountability.

I went to this restaurant for the first time yesterday and I loved it so much! First of all, the appetizers were amazing and delicious! Their pizza was amazing, their fried calamari was really good, and their rice balls were so delicious, and the bread for the table was really delicious! Second of all, the Eggs Benedict was so yummy and I would highly recommend getting the smoked salmon with it. I ordered a side of home fries which was really good too! Then for my dessert, I enjoyed a small cookie since I was really full. Overall, their food is really delicious and filling, and I would come back another day!

Ambiance (5/5): The inside is a split level and opens into the back mezzanine and also has an upstairs. The decorations are ornate. It was a bit dark but cozy and not too loud that you can hear each other. Service (5/5): The service is wonderful; coat checks in the front. Kind and attentive staff. Timing of dishes were great. Water glasses were refilled often. Took a little time getting the bill paid but overall, great service. Food (4/5): We came here for restaurant week ($60 3-course meal) and asked to order everything as family style. By doing so, the staff was kind enough to provide us each plates and we helped ourselves when the dishes came. Table bread: They were soft and filled with olives but was super olive-forward Crispy Sushi (5/5): This was my favorite of the 3 appetizers. The spicy tuna was nicely seasoned and texture of the crispy rice was a unique bite. Tartare (4/5): The tuna was very fresh and lightly seasoned with soy and sesame. My only qualm was that it came with 2 pieces of bread. Angel Wings (4/5): This was such a unique presentation to your typical wings. The meat was tender but I felt that the tamarind glaze a bit too forward. Nevertheless, still good. Filet Mignon (+$25) (4/5): It was cooked perfectly to our requested medium-rare. They also kindly provided each of the 3 sauces (béarnaise being my favorite). I had wished that they seasoned the filet some more as it was pretty bland without the sauces. The mashed potatoes were smooth and had a slight butter taste. Chicken Milanese (4/5): While the exterior breading was done to a perfect crunch, the breading lacked flavor besides the butter it was fried in. Perhaps, the salad atop the chicken could have been dressed with something to balance out the tastes. Burger (4/5): The burger was beautifully seasoned and cooked to a medium as requested. The fries were cooked well done also as requested! The crunch was lovely but it lacked some flavor. The pickle was hardly pickled and more like a cucumber with some salt. The added cheese gave the burger a more savory finish. Banana Parfait (5/5): This was the star amongst the desserts (and probably of all the dishes!) Caramelized bananas are atop a bed of vanilla ice cream and caramel crust. The warmed bite was a welcomed balance to all the flavors. Strawberry Sundae (4/5): This was not overly sweet and the strawberry ice cream and flavors came through. The soft cream and cake was lovely. Molten Chocolate Cake (3/5): The cake was almost too bitter and not very sweet but was very rich. Perhaps the lack of flour compromised the texture.

Great food and service. Worth every penny. The staff are very friendly, especially Chrysa. Their Tuna is out of the world

Google
T BAR offers a chic and upscale dining experience with exceptional food, drinks, and service. The crispy chicken Milanese topped with a fresh salad was perfectly balanced, while the sushi platter and tuna tartar were flavorful highlights. The cocktails were beautifully crafted and refreshing. With its stylish ambiance and attentive staff, T BAR is perfect for a date night or a night out with friends. Highly recommended!

Google
This was a very clean place nestled in a good area of the city, the price is a tad high, but you get what you pay for. The food has PUNCH. The steak was flavorful. The focaccia bread was crusty and buttery. They use high-quality olive oil and the mac & cheese was made of some of the sharpest cheese I’ve had. If you’re looking for a mild average, cheap run-of-the-mill dinner, this is not the place, but if you’re hungry, and have been walking around the city all day and are in the mood for something filling 10/10

Such a Beautiful and amazing restaurant. The atmosphere was live but not loud. The Service was on point, giving us full attention and with Descriptions of any dish we ask about. The food was made to perfection. Definitely a do again for me and My Wife.

Yelp
Our first visit to T Bar was superb. The menu is varied and the food portions are plentifull. The decour is tastefully modern. The service was friendly and professional. The food is nicely presented and it all tasted t n e way it should. Look forward to going back.

Yelp
Apparently, we were on a hunt for the best steak in the city and I think we accomplished it. T Bar was just a short walk from our hotel and looked rather swanky so we decided to give it a go for our last meal on the city. We ordered a strip, fries and green beans to share. The steak was brilliantly cooked and the sides accompanied the steak perfectly. Overall, it was a great way to end our NYC adventure!

Yelp
With a lot of wedding planning underway (and some snags occurring), we decided to grab lunch here while waiting to discuss an alteration issue at Bloomingdale's. I digress... In comes this lovely restaurant/bar and it immediately put us in a good mood for brunch. Good eats (steak and eggs) and good beverages (mimosas). It was quiet and cozy for a lovely December Sunday.

Yelp
Everything starting with the proprietor He is insulting and an embarrassment to his own establishment as well as his bar staff who happen to to be fabulous They are to good for this establishment My husband & myself were neighborhood regulars but no longer Bye bye

Yelp
We came here for a holiday meal and we had a lovely dinner at the T Bar. There are two floors at the restaurant which is an upgrade from their old location which was just one floor. It was a lively evening as there were many other families at the spot and the bar on the first floor was full. They have a good selection of appetizers. We got the pizza flatbread which we were able to choose between zucchini and margarita (we got a pizza with half and half). We also got a chicken soup and octopus as appetizers. The chicken soup my sister commented was delightful and the octopus was nice and tender. There also was olive bread and olive oil instead of normal bread and butter which we enjoyed with our appetizers before our entrees. For entrees, we all got a seafood dish. Even though T Bar is known to be a steakhouse, the fish we got was very good. We got two black sesame crusted tunas, branzino, and Chilean sea bass. I really enjoyed the Chilean sea bass and the branzino as they were warm and hearty dishes. The meaty branzino came with endives and capers and was very flavorful. The Chilean sea bass was laid on top of a bed of nicely cooked and seasoned bok choy. The tuna came on top of a bed of seaweed and was garnished with ginger. We also got three side dishes which were creamed spinach, mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. The creamed spinach and Mac and cheese were my favorite as they were both very rich. The mashed potatoes were also very good and creamy. Desserts were heavenly! (And I'm not usually a dessert girly) We got the banana parfait millefeuille with coconut and caramel sauce, a strawberry sundae shortcake with meringue, brandy and cream and a warm apple crisp that came with caramel drizzle and vanilla ice cream. The banana parfait was sooo amazing. The mille-feuille was delicious and crispy with nutty coconut flavors. There was vanilla ice cream in between the layers of crisp coconut cookie. And the caramelized bananas were delightful. The strawberry short cake was super moist and came with delicious strawberry ice cream and wonderfully sweet strawberries. There was also a crispy crunchy element with the meringue and there was also a big dollop of yummy whipped cream on top. The apple crisp was nice and warm but I would definitely rank the banana parfait and strawberry shortcake above the apple crisp. Overall we had a delicious meal with delightful desserts and the vibes were amazing for the evening. The staff was friendly and attentive and the food came out all at reasonable times.

Yelp
Cozy spot with fun spacious bar. Came in for a cocktail and had some delicious guacamole and chips. Good service and ambience. Not too crowded so easy to converse. Bathroom right near the bar which is convenient.

Yelp
Great spot for happy hour They have good deals on excellent drinks and food. The espresso martini is excellent. Tommy's Margarita is AMAZING! Tastes like the drink you would be having in your dreams at a beach side bar somewhere in the Caribbean. Whoever Tommy is, thank you very much for your Margarita recipe. The service here is excellent and the food is fabulous. Amazing atmosphere. A perfect date spot. Highly recommended.

Yelp
So, the food here is good. When I go out to eat I like to have a combo of both ambience and food. This place checks both of those boxes. The inside feels modern. There a bar area with stools and booth, then other dining levels. There's steps involved to go anywhere other than the bar, so just keep that in mind on case anyone in your party has issues with stairs. Looks like there's private dining rooms upstairs too. It seems there's only 2 bathrooms in the entire place, and they are single use. I guess privacy is nice, but also can be annoying to have to wait. Due to the location, the clientele seems to be 30's, 40's+. I would say the demo seems to skew older. Not a good or bad thing, but just a good-to-know. Drink prices are ok. Not the cheapest thing, but around $20 a drink. Personally, if I went here again I think it would be to get a drink or two with a friend and order an appetizer, rather than the place to go on a Saturday night. But, overall I left this place with a neutral feeling. Not amazing, not horrible.

Yelp
Definitely recommend for happy hour cocktails. Beautiful bar, easy environment, you will wait for a restroom (there's one unisex bathroom on the main floor, which feels like strange placement for a nice place, but I digress), the staff is nice (though you can tell they're still training new bartenders, which adds to your wait time). Bar snack (guac and chips, sashimi) have SUPER small portions, so just keep that in mind. They were good, perfectly ok, tho not really shareable.

Yelp
Great ambience, love the 20's vibe light. There are 2 floors n every room is cozy, perfect fur a dare the lights are a bit low do it's hard to get good pics of good. Jalapeño cucumber margarita $22 after all said w tax n riis it will cost you $30 at the bar. But well bc worth it. Nice n strong. The octopus is delicious, the grilled tuna is perfectly cooked, the burger omg so big! I had trouble getting a bite. The fries are so crispy. Service is super friendly n courteous. The best part was the bread!! So good, but I only had a of bc I don't want to fill up.

Yelp
Ah, T Bar, your old location was my favorite place to go with friends. We could always count on running into more friends, since pretty much everyone lived i the neighborhood, including my parents. I was crushed when you closed, and then thrilled to hear about your new location on 60th Street. Lisa and I met there, and obtained seats at the bar after a short wait for a second chair. The bartender who served us, a lovely young woman, was an absolute rock star. Wow. I had the Mezcal Mule to start. I usually just had a martini or V &T at the "old" T Bar, but the craft cocktails were SO tempting! Lisa had wine. We later shared the tuna tartare appetizer, which is TDF. SO yummy. And beautifully presented. We stayed for a while and imbibed a bit more. We didn't see anyone we knew, but the vibe is reminiscent of the old T Bar. Men in khakis and blazers, women in black leather pants. It's an elegant space. The bar has quite an impressive selection of tequila. I could easily try everything on the cocktail menu! There's seating in the bar area, and another dining area in the back. It's not open, like the old one. You go up a short flight. Very fun evening, and I look forward to returning.

Yelp
Last night some friends and I ended up here for dinner. My friends had the sushi and fish.. I had watermelon/feta salad, which let me tell you was delicious! I had as a main chicken Milanese. It was a big portion! Took half home for left overs. I had a Moscow mule and it was a bit on the strong side and I have never seen it come in a tall glass. Usually they come in copper mugs. The atmosphere of this restaurant was nice. The only downside is that there are only two restrooms one upstairs and one on the main floor.
google avatar

Yelp
The food and service is great here. For apps I suggest the shrimp cocktail, burrata, and meatballs. For t-bone is great to share. The sides are good as well, and I suggest the Mac N Cheese, Brussels sprouts and the mashed potato's. The different sauces that come with the steaks are delicious. If you sit in the bar, they have tvs.

Daniel Y.

Yelp
Service was impeccable. Drinks very tasty! The food was amazing especially the Bronzino!! Didn't get to try the dessert but looked great as well from other tables

Yelp
Delicious restaurant with great meat. I had some great drinks and food. Can't wait to make my way back to this restaurant for the good service and the ambiance was pretty nice here. I was definitely stuffed after coming here with some of my friends and family. Definitely recommend this restaurant to go with friends and family. Great place

Yelp
Our follow up visit to the T bar was disappointing. The space is beautiful and it is a total scene. If you want to hang out and have some dinner theater, this is the place. The bar is hopping. Prices are expensive for what is offered. The service was well-meaning, but disorganized. Drinks are expensive and modestly sized. Our side side order of french fries was served with our appetizers. The salad was good. My wife's fish was good. My tuna was overcooked. I ordered a double decaf espresso that didn't look like a double and kept me up. This meal whiffed. Off night or regression to the mean?

Yelp
My twin sister and I celebrated our birthday here last week and it did not disappoint. The service was wonderful and the food was delicious. I had the Chilean sea bass and my sister had the pork chop, both were perfectly cooked. My sister and I shared the mashed potatoes and carrots. Both sides were well seasoned. The only points lost was on the cocktail, it could've been stronger for the price, lol. I will definitely be going back.

Celeste B.

Yelp
Let me start by saying its a beautiful restaurant. The bar area is spacious and nice. The main dining area is stunning, but a bit small. Although I was satisfied with my meal, my date wasnt happy with the chicken wings and we had to send back his filet mignon to be properly seasoned (way too salty). The dessert was the highlight of my meal. The drinks were well made with a lovely presentation. My biggest qualm would be the service, we had to send someone to find our server on 3 occasions. There was at least 30 minutes of waiting time between each course which we only had 3. Also there is only 1 unisex bathroom on the main level and its in a very awkward place to have to wait for it to free up. If I were to return it would like just be for drinks at the bar.

Melissa B.

Yelp
A beautifully designed restaurant space which relocated from the upper east side. As you walk in, there is a bar on the right with spacious booths to the left and stairs in the back leading to the second level dining area. There is also a third level with a gorgeous cozy space. That's where we sat. We were given a corner table, which was very comfortable. We were there for Thanksgiving. I chose this place because unlike most New York restaurants on Thanksgiving, they offered food beyond what was on their prefix menu. I often find prefix menus very limiting. We were able to supplement our Thanksgiving meal from the prefix menu with mushroom risotto balls and mac & cheese from the regular menu. Both additions were excellent. The turkey from the prefix menu was exceptional - moist and flavorful. They served the turkey with delicious stuffing, cranberry and sweet potato. I would be remiss if I did not mention the incredible crabcake they served as an appetizer which was gigantic, perfectly crispy and expertly prepared. I ordered the pumpkin cheesecake which I was hesitant to do because I had never had it before. It was unbelievably delicious. My husband's apple tart was also incredible. I highly recommend this restaurant . Their wonderful food is matched by their gorgeous decor and excellent service.

Yelp
The new location is a bit more out of the neighborhood but its much larger and very nice. There are 2 floors with more seating and basically same menu as before. Service is very slow as you can tell they are getting the hang of things. Takes about an hr to get food. Some of the same staff is there which was nice to see. I hope they work on the service. The hostesses are lost and unprofessional. They made us wait 20 minutes even though there were plenty of tables and we had a reservation. They need to work on the turnover. I gave 4 stars because I am happy they are back. Food was good and so were the drinks.

Joscelyn E.

Yelp
Good food and very accommodating. Had a very nice and pleasant evening with dear old friends

Yelp
As a stay at home mom sometimes I go to places to find someone to talk to and relax. The hostess was so welcoming and helped me with Everything! I felt no judgement with my toddler and she even suggested things for my toddlers meal. Absolutely amazing, I definitely want to go back one evening with my spouse

Yelp
Pretty (but a bit dark, windowless) restaurant in a midtown location I hadn't been to (used to like the 3rd Ave spot). Ordered a burger. Medium. Came totally overcooked and well done. They were nice and offered a replacement. But when you pay those prices you don't want your lunch partner to sit and eat alone while I wait for them to make another burger. So I ate half and left the rest. They should have comped me. The waiter who served us disappeared mid- service. It was a disappointment. I hear the owner died recently so maybe the quality has slipped I don't know. But I t's not on par with other restaurants of that level, and I probably won't be going back.

Yelp
i have been here a few times and it never disappoints. the servers are fantastic and the owner came by and spent a few minutes with us. he is friendly and personable. loved my crab cake appetizer and the rib eye was cooked to perfection. thank you derek for such a memorable dinner/evening. looking forward to going back.

Yelp
Poor service, an unclean glass, a missing napkin, a coin toss as to receiving bread, dirty plates sitting on the table, steak not cooked as ordered, a poor selection (and volume) of background music...Yep, good help-- servers, bartenders, hosts, and chefs--is hard to find... The space is lovely, and the menu is well-structured. The food, when properly cooked and served, is fine. It is very early on, and Tony, as always, will eventually get it right. It could be great. Finger crossed... Outlook for Android

Yelp
Tasty cocktail single shot doesn't fill the glass(2 for $55) before dinner. Caesar salad was tasty. The sea bass was a tad strong. The $30 burger is much better at del frescos. A couple glasses of Sancerre and you have a $200 dinner not including cocktails at the bar. The place is pretty and well decorated. The downstairs bar is a tad tight. $300 night out for too. Money well spent that's up to you. For me rather have amazing food and less of a scene but that's just me.

Alex D.

Yelp
Interior is beautiful, but the food was gross, and we literally witness the owner of the restaurant freak out in front of a full dining room and try to fist-fight one of the waiters. This manager/owner guy made a fool out of himself and it was really cringey and embarrassing to see. We left shortly after and won't be back. Not really into supporting businesses that treat their employees like garbage.

Sarah L.

Yelp
had heard great things. sadly didnt live up to it at all. horrible service from when we walked in the door. drinks came out wrong - twice. waitress was uneducated on menu. owner was cheesy and trashy when trying to make rounds through the restaurant. the bar looked like it housed working girls from jersey or philly. overall really bad experience. wouldn't recommend to anyone who has class

Yelp
Had a really nice couple of meals here the last several weeks. Service was attentive and pleasant and super nice to my older dad and stepmom. Steaks were absolutely delicious as were the several sauces they provide. Guacamole was wonderful, bread delicious, chopped salad yummy. Desserts were a special surprise with the banana Mille feuille which was made surprisingly gluten free. Very happy with my experience here.

Yelp
I went to T Bar to try a drink at the bar. Very disappointing. I was by myself (a woman) with two men sitting next to me chatting. and two women sitting on the other side chatting. Bartender did not say ONE WORD to me, as a single person sitting by herself, to make me feel comfortable or welcome. Payed $26 for a small martini, the pleasure of sitting alone, with no rapport whatsoever with the bartender (it was 5:45, they were not busy), and left feeling like I had thrown my money out the window. Get it together T Bar.

Eric K.

Yelp
Please have the male bar tenders cut their hair or wear a hair net.  I may be old school but hair in drin or hair on bar is not cool

Alison J.

Yelp
It was our first visit to the new location. While the decor has changed for the better , food and service are still mediocre. For a Saturday night they were understaffed, our meal was 3 hours. We waited 30 minutes for our drinks at one point. Pizza was cold. They need to step up their game.
google avatar

Joan K.

Yelp
We went to T Bar to celebrate 2 birthdays. The reservation was made one month in advance. We were kept waiting for 40 minutes and then were given a table at the bar. The hostess could not have been less apologetic, stating that there was a party upstairs. Other parties that arrived after us were seated while we stood waiting. We were eventually moved to a table in the main dining area. The server was lovely and the food was good. The evening was ruined by the hostess, who claimed that she was the manager. My party of 4 will not be returning to T Bar.

Claire A.

Yelp
This venue had such good vibes!! I visited with my colleague for an after-work dinner and it did not disappoint. The cocktails are like nothing I have come across in New York, they were so pretty and yummy but beware! They are strong. There are three floors; the first was a bar and dining area, the main dining area was on the second floor and the top floor had dining and a private room.
google avatar

Doug A.

Yelp
Food is good but service not so much. We had to walk to the third floor which is hard for me so we won't be back. I ordered a cheeseburger and it came with no cheese. I ordered spinach with garlic but it came without garlic. Really. Was it the waiters or was it the kitchen.........but the hamburger was good.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Mediocre food. Service was okay.. would not recommend. There are other restaurants in the area that are worth trying over this place.

Bill B.

Yelp
Beautiful space and decor . Took 15 minutes to seat us even though the table was ready hostesses lost in space. Food was just ok not as good as the old tbar in NYC. Banana parfait was amazing as always! Hopefully it improves with time.

Tee D.

Yelp
The whole place was cold & univiting. They made us feel unwanted & unwelcome. I only saw one unisex bathroom for the whole place. Arrival on a rainy night was disorganized. Hostess wanted to hang 3 large winter coats on the same hanger even though mine was clearly wet. Who does that? We were taken all the way upstairs, to clearly the least desirable seats in the house. It was very dark. Not elegant & romantic dark as in ambiance just badly lit so it was hard to see. We were 3 older women. Along one wall was a banquette. We asked to sit on the far side but told we had to sit next to the door because they didn't want to slide tables to accommodate us. It was an early reservation and there was nobody else upstairs at the time. So instead as the person on the outside I was jostled by everyone walking in & out of the small narrow space. We all wanted the duck but were informed it could not be cooked to order. Are you kidding me? What self respecting chef in NYC can't prepare medium rare duck? Were were told well done or nothing. This upstairs room was so far from the kitchen that food was chilling by the time it arrived. For this logistical set up is it really too much to ask that the restaurant invest in some cloches so they can serve hot food to their customers? I was sorely disappointed and will not return. I will also tell others to avoid this place. It's NYC. There are so many better options. They only reason I even gave it 2 stars is because the overpriced pasta dish I eventually ordered was tasty and they had a good wine list. I don't understand why I had to sign up for yelp! to review this place. I couldn't find it on TripAdvisor.

Yelp
My dad and I have been to many restaurants and this one really stands out to us. All waiters are always very respectful which already puts a smile on my face. But the food is out of this world. Everything in here stands out. The restaurant has a very nice inside with modern lighting. I recommend coming here you will be very impressed with everything they do here.

Yelp
The chef said he doesn't serve dressing on the Cobb salad, when I inquired why my salad came with no dressing. Odd.

Yelp
We enjoy the food and the service was good but they took the pasta off the menu which was very disappointing. We thought theT Bar that was on third ave had much more on the menu. It was a little pricey but I would recommend trying it.

Yelp
My first time at the new T Bar in NYC. The old location had much better cocktails- the old blood orange cosmopolitan has been replaced by a formulaic raspberry cosmo that tasted like soap. The Bees Knees cocktail at $22 was all ice- hardly any liquor. Total rip off. The entrees were very well done - grilled salmon and a new roasted lobster with ginger noodles - But the service was off- bread taken away after appetizers and side dish was brought twenty minutes after entrees. For this price point there needs to beach better drinks and service. New location was very glammed up marble and shiny- not the older more neighborhood vibe. Higher prices but not much improvement .
