Where to Sip Soothing Teas in Portland

"What was once known as Tea Chai Té is now Portal Tea Company, though not much else has changed. It’s hard to top the cozy charm of the original Nob Hill location inside an organically labyrinthine Victorian house, but the Sellwood location — built in and around an honest-to-goodness railroad caboose — just might do it. Year-round Christmas lights and a few of grandma’s couches amplify the ramshackle charm, but the tea selection is anything but shallow. Portal steeps and pours more than 100 teas, from well-known Chinese and Japanese green teas to the harder-to-find Amazonian guayusa leaf tea." - Nathan Williams, Eater Staff

Portland Cafes Where You Can Camp Out and Work

"From the outside, this red converted train car may seem like something food cart adjacent, but behind the facade lies a winding, inviting cafe space packed with fun cozy spots for work and tea. Those wincing at the thought of wooden wishbone chairs, good news: There are plenty of couches, love seats, and armchairs here, plus your typical two-tops and bistro tables. Tea options are extensive, ranging from hulking iced herbal bubble teas to nuanced Darjeelings and pu’erh. When it’s time for lunch, Taiwanese cafe Wei Wei is a short walk away." - Asia Alvarez

11 Places to Find Charming Chai Lattes in Portland - Eater Portland

"Tea Chai Te is one of the city’s preeminent teahouses, serving 120 different tea choices including 15 different chai blends, all of which can be customized to order with different sweeteners, milks, and boba options. Traditionalists will be pleased by the masala and Kashmiri chai, whereas people looking to get out of their comfort zones can choose between a smoky chipotle chocolate chai, a vanilla rose chai, a pumpkin spice chai, and several other creative flavors. There’s a particular charm to the Sellwood location, fashioned out of an old train caboose, but during the pandemic any location will do. Orders can be placed online for pickup at all four locations in Portland. All online orders can specify sweetness and choice of sweetener and dairy." - Nick Townsend

Google
Cozy spot with a Wide range of teas. There is a cute outdoor space and fire place nook as well and seating in the train area(not pictured). My partner likes strong matcha and most places don't add enough. She asked them to make it strong and they did a really good job💚🍵. The staff was kind and helpful.

Google
Fun place for delicious tea! Friendly staff, huge selection, great environment: a train car! We sat in a cozy loft up a ladder. Loved it

This place is pretty busy. Lotta people and seem like they have a lot of good drinks here highly recommend visiting it. People are friendly.

Google
This tea shop is actually adorable. The vibe is 👩‍🍳💋 I got the passion fruit tea with mango popping boba, and it did not disappoint. It wasn't too sweet but full of flavor. The menu was quite large, and I will definitely be back to try more teas!

Google
One of the best places in Portland to buy both prepared and loose leaf tea. I have purchased a lot of loose leaf tea from Portal Tea (by mail) as Christmas gifts for first my wife and the following year she bought tea gift sets for our entire close friend group. The tea is very high quality and the staff is amazing. The atmosphere in their Sellwood caboose is one of a kind.

Google
I got a pumpkin spice chai tea, I asked for half sweet. It was good but I think lacking a little flavor. Maybe because I got half sweet? Not sure, but I wanted more Chai flavor. My BF got a mango tea and he really liked it. Cute vibes. It was busy so hard to find a spot to sit inside, but we got lucky and found a spot next to the fireplace. Very peaceful in there.

Google
This is one of my favorite places in Portland. I come here multiple times a week and recommend it frequently. It’s a great place to do work, read, or just hang out. I love the coziness of the fireplace room. Everyone who works there is great, especially Madi.

Google
Portal Tea Company combines a wonderful selection of teas with a unique and calm space for enjoying them. While the caboose itself can be hot, there is an open seating area below it, a quiet room with a fireplace, and a patio tucked away inside the main counter, providing many different seating options. After a couple of visits, I think their strength is in classic tea varieties, including chai, green tea, and oolong. They offer snacks as well as a small selection of tea-related gifts. Whenever I am in the area and need a tranquil place to sit, this location is my first choice!

Yelp
Awesome service with a fantastic selection of hot beverages to choose from. If you have any questions, you can smell your selection prior to ordering. The ambiance was early caboose and they had fun mind games that kept us engaged and entertained.

Yelp
I needed some lapsang souchang tea for a recipe later this week and was unable to locate it at any of my local stores. Put out a call on Reddit and got several responses, one of which was Portal. A quick drive and popped into the red caboose, only to discover that it's actually a storefront for a quite extensive and cozy location. Made my request at the counter, was quickly accommodated and quite reasonable at $4/oz. Will certainly come back to fulfill any specialty tea needs.

Yelp
This cozy tea bar on the second floor is a great spot to relax. The surrounding neighborhood is full of interesting shops, adding to the experience. The tea bar itself has multiple rooms, providing a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The staff are super friendly. We tried the oolong tea which was okay, though we would have preferred a bit more sweetness. They also have drinks for kids without caffeine. They can pick from a variety of flavors and toppings. They really enjoyed their choices and drinks. Overall, it's a pleasant place to visit, especially with kids.

Yelp
Unfortunately they don't know how to brew a proper black tea. It looked very diluted and tasted like white tea. I got the large pot. I don't recommend this place to people who like the taste of their tea and not cream, milk, sugar, honey, flavors added to that "drink". The worker was surprised I didn't want anything added to it so it should've been a red flag for me lol. The vibe was nice but so disappointing :(
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
The taro tea is definitely just a bagged taro tea mix that is super sweet. They couldn't steep tea due to it being 8mins before close when we were there. There is a lot of seating here and it looks like a good place to study. The decor is so cute and the loose leaf teas look tasty. I got sale kombucha here for $2 each. The waitress was nice but not willing to stay late to make a drink which is fair.

Yelp
I like to think I am a tea connoisseur, since I love to try so many different tea spots! Drink: 8/10 I got a type of green milk tea and I loved the quality of the tea, but I wish it was a bit stronger. It seemed a little watered down when I had it, but overall I drank it all because I do like tea. Service: 10/10. Lady in the front was so helpful when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to drink and she was so patient with me. She even told me to smell all the different teas, which was an incredible experience. Ambiance: 10/10. Was very cute inside and had lots of seating, even had an outdoor patio.

Yelp
Portal Tea is a delightful place to stop in a grab a warm cup on a cold day. When we first walked in, we were a bit confused. There were two people working and they both seemed incredibly busy. It took some time before we were acknowledged and we were standing in front of the order counter for probably about 5-10 minutes before someone said "We'll be with you in just a moment". As someone who's worked in service, it would have helped to have been given a shout as we walked in. This being said, there were a lot of folks to serve and there were only two of them, so we're not taking stars away for being a little locked in. Once we were served, the person who helped us was incredibly kind and gave great recommendations! I got the banana bread chai, with coconut milk and honey - which I HIGHLY recommend. My partner got a vanilla black tea, with no add ons and it was steeped perfectly and tasted very good as well. We hung out on a comfy couch and just enjoyed the space. The ambiance was cozy, with a pleasant level of chatter. The decor is incredibly cute and thoughtful, it's hard not to enjoy being in there - especially in the evening as they have some cool lighting fixtures! Overall: Great experience, even if a slow start. Really enjoyed our time and highly recommend the banana bread chai!

Yelp
I really love tea and any tea lover should come here. I was coffee out so some ice tea sounds really good after all the eating. . I got the peach oolong tea, it was strong and over ice. It was great. My friend got a yerbal ice tea. We loved it and it was about 11 dollars. . While in line I saw these tea flavor lip balm and I had to bring them home because it was very unique. . I love the exterior train exterior. There is plenty of parking and is kind of quirky with the building and layout. We enjoyed our tea time. The parking was in a neighborhood so you can find street parking. Some parking you will pay but most don't need payment. . There are two vintage shops next to here, so you can shop as well. I loved seeing these young kids drinking tea with boba here and makes me realize how lucky they are to have a nice drink after work. Hope this review helps and thanks

Yelp
My favorite hot tea shop! The ambiance is so calm, spacious seating, and very homey. The employees have always been friendly. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I've found my happy place in Portland. It's quirky, architecturally beautiful from the inside and has amazing tea with a fireplace you can relax by. The staff are friendly and will try to go above and beyond for you. I like to get the matcha latte with almond milk and honey
google avatar

Yelp
We had stopped by Portal Tea Co. on our bike ride and it was such a treat! I ordered the Banana Coconut Chai Tea. I think my girlfriend's Coconut Chai Tea was much better though. So much better that we came back for the concentrate on our next bike ride. The turn around for a chai tea is about 5 minutes or so, the service is pretty quick not to mention friendly. They do have non dairy options for milk, almond, oat, and coconut. They also have honey available as sweetener. The inside is a cute little train where you walk down to order your chai tea, but you can sit up in a car above the level floor, it's pretty cool!

Yelp
Our teenage bring us here since she works at boba place most the time and I was working at a loose tea leaf retail long time a ago ..... first the aroma reminds me my old time , smell good !! But the menu is very difficult for me to figure out how to order , once we finally figure out , their machine is not working so the cashier needs to type in ..... then I think I misunderstood them so I didn't ordered one for the teenage...... And the tea taste weird ( it's my personal feeling ) but I will say I don't like it , sorry ! ! This might good for young people hanging out , not for me !

Yelp
What a fun tea house. The train car entry in a quirky and cute, and hides a deceptively large interior with multiple nooks and spots to sit and enjoy your tea. With an inviting fireplace in the back room, or the hidden alcoves, you have lots of options. However, the place is often full or Reedies studying, so don't assume a table will open. Best to find your table and then put in your order or you may be left holding a pot with nowhere to sit. We had the classic chai and it was delicious. But there were tons of options, including decaf and herbal. Also boba! The staff were friendly and efficient. A lovely place to spend an hour catching up with my daughter home from college.

Yelp
I've not been in this tea bar for some time (probably before Covid) and my experience was incredibly underwhelming. I was excited to visit Tea Chai Té and found that it had been renamed. I had my three children with me and entered through the back door entrance then ordered two drinks. The baristas were somewhat friendly, though it didn't seem genuine. Boba teas took a really long time with no forewarning of a wait, I just waited there while people who ordered after us got their drinks promptly. I didn't complain and remained patient but I will not be returning. Drinks were okay, there's way better just down the street at Junbi which specializes in matcha tea.

Yelp
What an amazing place in the heart of sellwood! They have. massive selection of just about every tea conceivable! They're in a very old caboose railroad car that's stationary off 13th ave! Parking can be tricky but this is a special gem that cannot be missed!
google avatar

Takara H.

Yelp
bigger than you will think, there a whole building in there. getting the menu may be a bit awkward if its crowded because they are up front by the register. Very very delicous tea, im shocked at how creamy and delicious this milk tea is.
google avatar

Eleanor F.

Yelp
Great selection of teas and laid back staff. Love how many seating options they have too.
google avatar

Victoria T.

Yelp
This was fun. Walked by so many times and never thought of going in. If you're in the area, check it out and grab a drink. Their early grey is so creamy. It reminds me of the Earl Grey you'd get from afternoon tea at the Fairmont hotels. If you like ginger milk tea, they use real ginger. It's shredded/diced finely and in your milk tea. I love ginger and was so surprised. Their milk tea isn't super sweet either. Cute venue and already telling my friends about trying this place. This is now my spot for boba or Earl Grey.
google avatar

Alicia S.

Yelp
Best service, best bubble teas -- not too sweet. Also super accommodating to dietary needs.
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
What a cute location for boba tea in Sellwood! Excellent selection of Boba tea with a variety of flavors. I tried the lavender at the recommendation of the barista and I wasn't disappointed. Prices were very reasonable $5.00 for a medium. Cute indoor and outdoor seating area.
google avatar

Susanne C.

Yelp
Definitely try this place It's a healthy treat if you're looking for tea and backed goods
google avatar

Roya B.

Yelp
Such a cute location! Loved the different rooms, especially the one with the fireplace. We loved the Love tea from the apothecary collection. We saw a lot of people studying here but it would be a great place to meet and catch up with a friend. There's also a huge boba collection and a couple coffee options.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Disappointed that tea I ordered was not labeled as containing artificial flavoring. It was claimed to be natural, only tea. It can make some people seriously sick. Other teas are labeled with flavoring. Labeling is dangerously inconsistent. Just a shame.
google avatar

Kealani L.

Yelp
This tea place was fantastic!!! I really enjoyed the outside seating. The tea was so comforting as well. Absolutely delicious! They brought it out within the five minutes of us sitting down!! Very quick! Thanks again!!
google avatar

Poppy L.

Yelp
Still so lovely inside. However, every time I go in there I am overwhelmed by the annoying ness of loud, highly reflective and self-congratulatory Reedies. I take my tea to go and it is tasty! Another reason we're down a star is the not-good new name.
google avatar

Keizzel C.

Yelp
What a super cute tea joint! It's unassuming when you enter from the front since you're basically entering an old red train cart. Definitely worth taking a photo before you enter. When you enter as well I was surprised to see how large of a space them had with seating upstairs and plenty more seating downstairs. The walls were also decorated with the various types of tea canisters of what you can buy and they even had a small outdoor patio area. Their menu has plenty of variety for your standard milk teas, fruit teas, kombucha, etc. This visit we ended up getting a rose fruit tea and boba milk tea. The boba here was a fresh batch when we arrived so it wasn't as soft as I think it could have been. Curious to see if their boba is a little softer/chewier once it's had a bit of time to cool. All in all, plenty of options for any person. I just really enjoyed the ambiance so worth checking out before or after your dinner in the area.

Nathan H.

Yelp
Just a great place to have a cup of tea while meeting with friends or trying to get a bit of work done. There are dozens and dozens of different tea varieties to choose from, and you can create new flavors by mixing two teas together (I had a combination of Short Sands and Chocolate Mate chai today, and it was great - smoky and chocolatey at the same time). The staff is incredibly friendly and efficient, and I appreciate their music choices. I feel like they make the extra effort to make you feel like a valued customer. There are many seating options and lots of plugs on wall in case you need to charge up the laptop. Don't sleep on the treats in the bakery case - the Everything Bagel Galette is especially tasty.

Yelp
This place has lots options for the best tea in town. You could not imagine how many people were inside the store. We were lucky to have a table for three of us. After we placed our order, they brought our tea to the table. It's a nice tea house for spending time with friends. We were a little surprised when walking in to the store.

Kelly J.

Yelp
I used to enjoy this place for many years but recently I learned they let my two favorite baristas go. Lauren and Jenna were the absolute best baristas (my favs)!! It's about the people who worked here that made this place so welcoming. I guess I will have to track them down at Starbucks or Peets. So much turn over at this place that the regulars will start dropping off.
google avatar

Kerrie D.

Yelp
A really sweet respite with a comfy outdoor courtyard and an extensive tea menu. Tea Chai Te is right on the main drag of this wonderful town, with so many interesting shops and stops. I ordered an iced green peach tea and was VERY happy with my choice! Staff was great!
google avatar

Alessandra C.

Yelp
This is the most adorable place for tea that I've ever been to. I would stay here all day reading a book and drinking tea if I could. There are over 100 tea flavors! From outside it looks like a cart, but once you get in it's house with a charming little garden on the back. We had the non-caffeineted coconut chai with coconut milk, which was amazing. I'm a huge tea fan and I wish I had a place like this to go back home.

Toby M.

Yelp
Great food! Amazing boba!! The service was great and very fast. The ambiance was great, it felt like a little workshop, smelled amazing!
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
Marin & Sol were so incredibly sweet & their service was above and beyond today. Came by with my friend and two pups today after a day hanging by the river and it was the perfect way to end the day as the dogs got to hang out with us in the outdoor seating area and being visited by both Marin & Sol. They were super helpful with our beverages and honest with us every step of the way in assisting us with some of our options. Drinks were delish as always and boba was on point! Loved the generous scoops in our drinks, really hit the boba cravings! Sol was also so thoughtful as to come by with a cup of water for the pups, both of them were super friendly and made the experience so enjoyable!
google avatar

Sochietta K.

Yelp
I would stay here all day if I could! This is the my all time fav coffee shop, even though I only stayed for a little. Super cozy, i would work here if I could. There are over 120 tea flavors and the staff are so knowledgeable about the teas, you will be sure to find one that you like. Order a cup of the peach white blossom. (brewed to perfection!!) Can't wait to go back on my next trip to Portland
google avatar

Erica D.

Yelp
I mean ...you can't really complain about tea in a train car. Even if their tea was terrible, I'd still probably come here sometimes. Good news: the teas are, in fact, delicious. lots of great options thst I don't seem to find at other tea shops around town.
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
Tea chai Te is incredible with the sheer amount of options they have! They have over 100 varieties of tea along the wall for your selection! I tried the coconut chai tea made from rooibos coconut tea with milk and honey. It was soooo good, it was smooth, creamy and a hint of coconut goodness. Definitely come for their speciality teas and not for the milk teas. I was very disappointed in the milk teas/ boba. I ordered the taro milk tea and it was straight taro powder mixed with milk and sugar. For a tea speciality store I was expecting real taro at the least if not fresh like other tea places. I also tried the ginger milk tea which was better but I wish you could choose sweetness level. Also the batch of boba I got was the last one and it was incredibly hard and old. I didn't even eat any of them. I definitely recommend coming here for the relaxed ambiance, comfy seating, and speciality teas!
google avatar

Tina H.

Yelp
I got boba black milk tea. I love how I can taste the roast of the black tea leaves. Their lavender kumbucha, so light and refreshing. Every time I come to Portland I come to this tea shop for my tea! Also, When we went this place was so busy! But yet our barista was so patient. She was so welcoming and she even made recommendation. I wished I got her name. I think she was a huge asset to this company! The atmosphere?! Oh my gosh! Such a cozy inviting setting. I can't describe it because you just have to be there. My friend and I was so excited to climb the latter to sit high up!

Jordan T.

Yelp
My favorite tea spot in Portland. I absolutely love their teas and bubble teas and am always impressed with the variety they offer. It's a great place to work/study or catch up with a friend, and the staff is always friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Best tea ever. Killer boba and macrons. Anytime I'm in Portland I always stop for some tasty tea.

Naz K.

Yelp
Wow this place looks tiny from the outside but when you walk in , your going to be blow away. I love the character of this tea shop extremely unique , there tea is very good and many different options.

Sophia B.

Yelp
Tea chai te has a special place in my heart. I've been patronizing them for over 5 years now, and usually stop by 2-3 times a week. Best tea shop in Portland by far! All employees are so friendly and offer many recommendations when I'm feeling indecisive! I've always gotten my teas pretty quickly which is nice! The Sellwood location is so unique and fun! A super comfortable place to sit down and do some work. (Pre Covid of course.) I love how cozy and homey the inside feels. Not to mention the back patio during the summer time! Along with that I loved how (pre covid) they brought in other small local vendors! One particularly I would see would be LuckyLocks! For a while I had a weekly routine on Wednesdays to get tea and hair sparkles! So fun, especially if you have kids too!! In regards to Covid, I'm so thankful they are taking so many precautions! I loved how all summer you would pick it up at the door. Once they started allowing customers in I got a little nervous, though they have done an incredible job. All employees wearing masks properly, a plastic sneeze Guard between the employees and you while placing your order. All socially distanced and markings on the ground! When they did dine in briefly, I found the Velcro sheets on the tables marking if it was dirty or not was so clever! Along with that using the website to place a to go order has never been easier! Not to mention the online reward points instead of the punch cards! I absolutely love it!! If you are still nervous to go into places, feel free to give them a call and they can take your order out to you!! During all this Covid craziness it's more important than ever to support these small local businesses! And lastly, if you are as indecisive as me, here are a few of my fav drinks since I've nearly had everything on the menu! Lavender milk tea with tapioca and aloe Guava green tea with tapioca A hot black peppermint milk tea with tapioca Any of their chai teas are amazing and same with their white teas!
google avatar

Sandy P.

Yelp
What a cute place! It looks like a train car, and I expected to find just a counter, but it's actually a big place. There's plenty of seating in different rooms, and the tea menu is huge. The two women working were friendly and helpful. I had a pumpkin spice tea latte, and my husband had the golden chai plus we tried a couple flavors of macarons. It was all very delicious, and there was a good vibe in the shop, so we stayed there and relaxed and enjoyed our tea. Will definitely be back regularly.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
I'm a bubble tea (aka boba tea) fan, and I love, love, love their taro blended bubble tea with extra bubbles :) The caboose fooled me! I thought the entire place would be just the size of the caboose. Umm.. no. It's like that scene in the Harry Potter movie where the tent looked small from the outside, but it's a size of a palace inside. Yeah, that's how I felt when I walked in the door. What? What? The couches, chairs, and side tables feel like you're lounging at home in the caboose area, and the main area has more the tables and chairs just like a regular restaurant. There's outside seating as well so it'll be good on summer days. The staff are super nice. The place is clean. There are two nooks in the caboose opposite each other with ladders that will take you up in those nooks. I sat in one of the lounge chairs next to a coffee table with a lamp. I put my taro blended bubble tea with extra bubbles on the coffee table, took the book out of my backpack and turn to the page where I left off. The bubble above my head reads, "Om... " Imagine that for a second. And, here comes a group of teenagers and headed up the nooks, and that was the end of my Om. The Om bubble above my head just popped! They were a rowdy group of teenagers. I can't really be critical about these teenagers because I once belonged to a rowdy group. Hahaha! You know, teenagers... =P The nooks are very popular to both the younglings and the wanna-be-younglings. There's a bar between the two nooks so you can use that like a monkey bar and jump down from the nook. It gets loud in the caboose area because of the nooks.

Yelp
tasty tea and lovely environment! the place is a lot bigger than you'd think with room to study, talk with friends, or just hang out. the employees were lovely as well. my review is actually a 3.5, it was great but not something super special or noteworthy in my opinion
google avatar

SIok T.

Yelp
Guava Drink with tapioca pearls, nice!!! Cost $3.95 The tapioca pearls were smooth and chewy. Fast service.
google avatar

Alicia H.

Yelp
My favorite Teahouse ANYWHERE! The caboose is the cutest most magical spot to hang out! It's like Harry Potter's tent, you walk in and it's HUGE inside!
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Tea is ok, very large selection. Took forever to get our 4 to-go teas. My husband literally ordered a pizza, had it baked, and ate part of it before our teas were done. Cute inside.
google avatar

Sheri H.

Yelp
This place is so lovely!!! I always think I've seen all the nook and crannies in Portland and then I meet a friend for coffee and I find a new (to me) neighborhood! The outside looks so small but when you step inside it's like a wonderful oasis of cozy and twinkle lights and steeping tea. The menu is crazy big and the gal who was working was so helpful! This is the kind of place you want to bring a long book to and camp out for hours. Perfect for the cooler rainy days but the outdoor back patio with its twinkle lights make it a great summer evening destination as well! Can't wait to come back!!
google avatar

Martha R.

Yelp
It's too busy, patrons aren't terribly friendly, and the wait just to order is crazy. It gets really loud in here, so it shocks me how many people are here studying - not sure how you can concentrate in this type of atmosphere. Overall really prefer Townshend's (either SE location.) Tea is fine, overall but it's not like you can't get that elsewhere. The seating in the caboose is pretty cool, and the unique feature of this place. Parking nearby can be a challenge, but that's nothing new to the area.
