Tek Heng Mee Krob Jeen Lee

"History is on the menu at this legendary Thai-Chinese restaurant. Starting out as a floating shop on Klong Bangkok Yai before moving onshore in 1907, it’s now run by 4th generation descendants of the Thai-Teochew founders. It fills three shophouses adorned with articles, awards, and photos, including some of King Rama V. He is said to have enjoyed the Mee Krob, or crispy vermicelli – one of this place’s many classics based on 130-year-old family recipes." - Michelin Inspector

I visited Tek Heng in July 2025. Dining here is like stepping into a living piece of Bangkok’s history. From a royal encounter on the river to a family’s dedication across four generations, this is food that tells a story. If you’re exploring Talat Phlu, don’t miss the chance to taste a dish that has stood the test of time. Tek Heng’s crispy noodles aren’t just delicious… they’re a crunchy, fragrant bite into Thailand’s flavorful past, enjoyed right here, in the present. A Legendary Hidden Gem in Talat Phlu – Over 138 Years of History! This place is a true culinary treasure that has stood the test of time, open for more than 138 years since the reign of King Rama V. It’s famous for its traditional Mee Krob (crispy fried noodles), a rare and authentic dish you can’t easily find elsewhere. They offer both the classic dry fried version, which is perfectly crispy and flavorful, and a unique soup version with a slightly tangy taste, both are absolutely delicious in their own way. The flavors are distinct and unlike anything you’ll try elsewhere. The staff are friendly and attentive, and there’s no service charge. The restaurant is air-conditioned and comfortably cool, making it a pleasant place to enjoy a meal. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime food experiences. If you’re in Bangkok, visiting this historic spot is a must.

The OG of OG. The Mee-Grob (the crispy fried noodle) is the best I've had. Not easy dish to do well. The original recipe since the time of King Rama 5. Good tom yum soup and fish cakes as well. Great to come with family and friends so can order many dishes.

An old school place to get a meal. Most food ok. Nothing to shout about but their mee krob, sweet and crispy and goes extremely well with their sour Tom yum gong. The sourness helps to cut through the sweet slightly oily feel of the noodles

Family friendly atmosphere with a variety of menu selections. Ordered 2 dishes of the signature crispy noodle, a good half an hour wait it finally arrived, but unfortunately, the impression fell short of expectations. For 200 Baht per dish, the portion was rather small with only 2-3 pieces of small shrimps. Overall, it doesn't feel like it was worth the price.

Food [3/5] 1) 🍜 Crispy Noodle with Shrimp, Crab, and Egg (4.25/5) As recommended by Michelin, their signature dish, the deep-fried bee hoon, was exceptionally fragrant and delightfully crispy without being tough. It offered a perfect blend of sweetness and savory flavors. To savor the crispy noodles' texture, I preferred adding the condiments directly into my mouth rather than mixing them in. It was a unique taste experience that I would recommend trying if you're in the area! 2) 🐟 Fried Curried Fish Cakes (2.5/5) Suggested by a YouTuber, we decided to try the seemingly ordinary curried fish cakes. Unfortunately, they turned out to be quite ordinary indeed. They had a slightly tough texture, a mild curry flavor, and some rather peculiar long beans that didn't absorb the curry's essence. The accompanying sauce was rather mediocre. 3) 🍳 Fried Oysters with Omelette on a Hot Plate (2/5) The oysters in this dish were too fishy for my taste, and the omelette lacked the desired crispiness and fragrance, even though I tried it immediately upon serving. Additionally, the nearly raw bean sprouts overshadowed what little fragrance the omelette and oysters had. While the dish was also overly oily. 🚗 Service [4.5/5] The staff, including waiters and cashiers, were exceptionally friendly to foreigners and non-Thai speakers. They also appeared to offer parking for their customers and even assisted with providing sun covers for cars to keep them from getting too hot inside. ❄️ Ambience [4.25/5] While the shop's interior might show its age a bit, it's air-conditioned, well-maintained, and very clean. 💲 Value [1/5] The total bill amounted to 480 Baht, which might be considered expensive but reasonable, especially given the Michelin recommendation. However, considering the price relative to the quality of the food, I would suggest trying the crispy noodles once out of curiosity and saving your money for other dining experiences in the future.
