I love "dives", and the Shita Machi/old town, unassuming, charming look of Tempura House outside & inside reminds me of Japan in the 30th reign year of the Shōwa Emperor.
In other words, 1955 when much of Japan was still influenced by the mindset of the Meiji Resoration which initiated modernization starting in the late 1860's-1912 since the youngest of that generation would still be in their influential 40's.
I entered the time warp and walked up to the counter, looked up at the picture menu board and ordered from the friendly counter woman.
She showed me the photo of the original Japanese American couple who first started Tempura House in 1949 with the surrealistic background of the photo painted by the husband. The wife is still alive, and Tempura House is now into its 3rd owner.
Ironically, Tempura House, when I was there, didn't serve Tempura, but does still make fried foods such as Chicken Kara Agè, Pork TonkAtsu, (Not TonkOtsu which is pork bone Rāmen broth), and Agè Dashi Tōfu.
Got my Ponzu Chicken in 10 minutes.
Bentō/Japanese Box Lunch:
Ponzu Chicken is marinated in a tangy Ponzu Sauce, which consists of Yuzu/Japanese citrus, Shōyu/soy sauce , Su/rice vinegar, marinade for a few hours to make the usually dry white meat chicken feel moist, meaty, at the same time still be satisfyingly chewy.
The stretchy skin has fatty, chicken Umami countered by the acidity of the Ponzu as well as a touch of smokiness from ground black pepper. One of the better satisfying grilled "Teri Yaki" style chicken in a long time.
Rice is perfectly steamed Japanese short grain rice, each grain is discrete, bit al dente yet soft and a bit glutinous.
Salad: Rotelle pasta, medley of Mesclun like greens including bitter, peanut oily Ruccola, crispy romaine, green medicinal fibrous parsley, rough kale, blanched carrots, red cabbage, slivered onions, tomato.
All these greens ensure good fibre & gut flora to promote the immune system and general overall health. All the above dressed in what may be a lightly acidic, creamy Italian dressing augmented by Shōyu/soy sauce.
Very limited outdoor tables. Everything served in takeout containers. Good deal, great down home flavours that harks back to mom's cooking. 4 stars.
PS On the overhead blackboard to the right under Today's Special, Pork Steak has "Outstanding Eater's Response" in Japanese which will be my next order.
