Tempura Shimomura

"The menu is extensive to cater to diners’ tastes but has strong regional roots. Fish and vegetables are fried in alternation, with the accent on shrimp, sillago and conger eel. Recently, few tempura places offer tendon only, but here, tendon of vegetable tempura and kakiage (all-in-one seafood and vegetable tempura blend) are available at lunchtime. Feel free to add seafood items to the vegetable set menu. Woodblock prints and an icebox vaguely recreate the atmosphere of working-class Edo." - Michelin Inspector

Seems not very popular with foreigners so it’s not hard to reserve a seat. But the tempura is authentic and service is good, with price being reasonable. Would like to come again for a dinner menu.

Didn’t really understand the hype behind this place. Our tempura wasn’t well drained, or rather, they were inconsistently drained. Half the pieces had a quantity of oil left that detracted from the ingredients being fried (you can see a glistening layer in some of the photos), and one piece of prawn had batter that was soggy. Even the celebrated sweet potato was a tad dry for me, although the brandy that we were supposed to douse it in helped the dish greatly.

Dinner, dine-in, solo traveler. Items can differ according to the time (lunch/dinner) and the season. Throughly enjoyed this Tokyo tempura omakase experience. Went for the Chi Ayu tempura (which I've yet to find in tempura omakases in my country), but was highly pleased by the amadai and kisu as well. Veggie tempuras are interspersed between 'main' items to keep things from becoming too heavy - but all items are skillfully lightly fried in the first place, so no need to worry about ending up with an oily palate! Didn't see an English menu here (might have missed it), but the chef tries his best to explain the items. Clientele was mostly local with only one other foreigner, but the chef did mention that he's seeing an increase in foreign travelers.

Counter seating with very good explanations from the chef! Everything was superb and the technique was outstanding. Tempura was light and texture amazing!

Eating here was like being in a portal. We walked out in a daze, only then truly realizing how we had been entranced by the hospitality and food. The chef has a friendly and graceful demeanor and fries the tempura like an artist painting. The taste and quality were excellent. Some Tempura was surprising, like the Onion. It can also be very hot, so it was nice to wait a few minutes even after placing. The full picture is really the service, cleanliness, style, and warmth of the food and chef. It all combines to create a next level cozy yet highly sophisticated environment.

Decent. My companion and I both felt underwhelmed given the price we paid. Perhaps our expectation is too high and the previous experience at another tempura omakase restaurant was too outstanding. We ate here in February 2023.
