"Leave your coat with the distinguished attendant at the door and enter this piece of restaurant history. Having served hungry and thirsty customers for more than a century (though initially at a different location), Tennstopet is still going very strong. Order the SOS (herring, cheese, butter) and add cured salmon with dill-creamed potatoes, potato pancakes with vendace roe, and steamed cod with a poached egg to complete your meal. Chase it all with lager and aquavit. Or pop next door to sister restaurant Tennstopet Grill, an American-style grill utilizing Swedish ingredients." - Per Styregård

I was excited to dive into some traditional Swedish cuisine during my trip and stumbled upon this restaurant. It’s conveniently located at a street corner near an intersection, making it easy to spot. The restaurant has two areas: one for dining and another just for drinks. I chose to dine in and enjoyed sitting outdoors, even though it was already 8 pm! I tried the cheese & bread herring and Swedish meatballs. The portions were generous—almost too generous! Everything was tasty. I can’t claim to be a Swedish food expert, but I had a delightful evening. The herring was my favorite: a perfect balance of salty and sour. You can enjoy it with bread, cheese, or even potato if you find the pickling a bit strong. The Swedish meatballs were decent and came with a surprising amount of mashed potatoes. I couldn’t finish everything, but it was a satisfying experience.

My husband and I were looking for good meatballs while in Stockholm and we read great things about this place. It did not disappoint - wow! Meatballs were amazing, as were the sides - especially the creamy mash and the gravy. Really lovely traditional decorative restaurant too and very professional staff. Highly recommend. A must visit if staying in Stockholm!

Been to Stockholm to visit my family and they recommended this restaurant, and it was the best meal i had in a long time. We tried most of the things on the menu, all of them being delicious, but the reindeer was my favourite. The staff was really nice and polite. I loved the cozy warm atmosphere. I will make sure to try and visit next time im in Sweden!

We LOVED this restaurant! We have Swedish family who recommended Tennstopet and it definitely did not disappoint! Food was wonderful and service was incredible. All the staff was super friendly and knowledgeable. We had Angelica as a server and she even gave us some history of the restaurant itself. She was very professional, helpful and friendly. We had such a great time at lunch we booked it for our last dinner in Stockholm too! We travelled with three tween/teenage kids and my two parents. My dad is Swedish and loved the traditional food and decor! Was perfect for the whole family!

Absolutely fantastic place. I was a bit worried about the old and somewhat worn down decor when I walked in, but it’s really an integral part of the full experience. Service is impeccable, and the menu has a range of classic Swedish dishes that are to die for. Started with a herring and cheese platter, and continued with a perfect Wallenbergare with green peas, mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam. Accompanied the lot wirh individually served little bottles of aquavit, beers and a glass of wine. Others at the table were equally impressed with blood pudding and steak tartare. Absolutely perfect from start to finish, and well above expectations! Will definitely recommend.

Had great dining experience here. The food was just excellent. I really liked the Wallenbergare entree, and the steak tartare appetizer. Both were savoury dishes but nicely balanced. Also attentive and helpful staff as well. Would recommend if you are visiting the city. It's a good spot to try out the traditional Swedish dishes in a really well prepared manner.

One of the oldest restaurants in Stockholm steeped in history, a place where the media used to frequent, back in the day. The food is traditional Swedish food, and its done very well. The staff are great too. We had a selection of dishes including the salmon, meatballs, steak tartare and they were all served to a high standard.
