The Best Restaurants in St. John’s, Newfoundland | Eater Montreal

"If you make the smart decision and follow the menu’s advice to “let the kitchen cook for you,” Chef Matthew Swift will not steer you wrong. This relative newcomer to St. John’s (the restaurant opened in 2019 inside the ALT Hotel St. John’s) is now one of the best restaurants in the city and renowned across the country. It’s known for its close relationships with sustainable aquaculturists and one of the province’s only subsea foragers, which show up on the plates of scallop crudo in marigold cream sauce and halibut filet with maitake and sandwort." - Gabby Peyton

We came for dinner with a friend. The food was incredible, the drinks fantastic, and the service outstanding! Thank you Chase and head chef for the surprise dishes. Both the Tuna and Mussels were exceptional! And the cocktails….crafted to perfection. Thank you Delaney!

This isn't the starter series. This is advanced dining. We ate the chef's menu which came with perhaps 6 starters/salads, 2 mains, and a dessert. I couldn't tell you what it all included because each dish was complex with various vegetables, herbs, spices and many included a protein. Delicious. The foods are fresh, seasonal and crafted with care. The service was patient, helpful and pleasant. I'd highly recommend.

Jakob our server was warm, knowledgeable and efficient. His recommendations for wine, dessert and entree menu options were spot on. The ambiance of restaurant offers lovely view of harbours, contemporary and wonderful option for hotel guests.

I was visiting St. John’s Newfoundland and had a list of restaurants picked out to dine at and let me tell you this was the best of them all. I had fresh cod, their beer chicken was unlike any flavour I tried before and the service was impeccable, I highly recommend getting a cocktail too, our espresso martinis were delish!!

Terre is an absolute must if you want an upscale dining experience. From the second you walk in, its interior decor is professional designed with fantastic attention to detail; the bar is beautiful. The service was excellent from the host’s greeting through till the end of the meal. The food was plated elegantly, and delicious. We savoured the snow crab, and the PEI oysters. My husband has been here many times, and says every dish is delightful. We also ordered cocktails which were also delicious. One was the mixologist’s take on a negroni, the other was a type of spicy margarita — both were savoured. Reserve in advance, because they are understandably in very high demand.

Starved myself all day for this. Friend said it was best resto in st john’s. I even dressed up (which i rarely do). Picked here for my wife’s bday dinner. When we got there they started walking us to our table then didn’t know where to put us so we stood in middle of dining room for 5 mins dodging servers and other patrons. Our server took our drink orders, and came back 10 mins later and said he forgot what our drink orders was. No big deal, but not a good start. We didn’t receive our first drink for 25 minutes. The tables are close together so every couple mins when servers went to the table next to us we’d get a random servers butt at face/drink level. We ordered the chef-cooks-for-you option, hoping to get a taste of everything. Unfortunately everything came out very slowly and was not very impressive. Our first “course” came out at about the 45 min mark. Bad flavour combinations and seemed like they gave us the less desirable options. There was chicken that smelt good, and some beef, but our grand finale was a soggy sausage for 2 to share. The plating was quite messy overall. They gave us raw uncut vegetables with a nasty fish dip just splattered all over the plate. This is meant for a child’s lunch, not fine dining. Hardly gastronomy IMO. Usually you’ll like a couple things, a couple other not so much. Unfortunately this was not the case. One bite appetizers usually have you desiring more, but alas i did not desire more. I expressed my disappointent at the 1/3 mark of service but was assured better things were coming. One server claimed i wasn’t adventurous because i didn’t enjoy the food. I just wanted to leave and go eat somewhere else, but i was already locked in. I have eaten durian, whale, fish eyeballs, etc. i am not a picky eater in the slightest. The combinations didn’t work and they all had the flavour of canned smoked mussels. When you’re looking at a 400$ meal you’d expect more than 2 drinks and to have enjoyed at least some of the food. They got paid, and my wallets lighter. So if they don’t like my opinions and think i’m uneducated in food service, i’m not concerned. Just another hotel restaurant tourist trap on water street as far as i’m concerned.

Highly recommend “let the kitchen cook for you” option. It was dish after dish of interesting flavors and with the freshest ingredients! The staff were also incredibly warm and friendly. Definitely an amazing experience!

We so enjoyed our visit with Terre. The staff were friendly, knew the menu well and bartender made a fine lemon drop martini. The food was creative and delicious. The razor clams were a treat! Smoked arctic char a must. The broccolini with shredded beef very tasty and strip bass all worth choosing. We shared it all so it was not too much food.
