Teru Sushi - Review - Studio City - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Teru opened back in 1980, which isn’t exactly ancient, but does make it one of the founding members of Ventura Boulevard’s sushi scene. Long before most Americans knew what a dragon roll was, this homey spot was serving them to nearby studio workers as a convenient and reasonably priced post-work dinner. Today, not much has changed. The soft-lit dining room decorated with traditional Japanese art is filled nightly with families, roommates, and burned-out coworkers seeking solitude in the form of gigantic specialty rolls under $20. Given all thenearby competition, Teru wouldn’t be our first recommendation in the neighborhood for sushi, but for a no-frills night of rolls in the Valley, it’s still a worthwhile stop." - Brant Cox

Dinner date night at Teru Sushi was an absolutely wonderful experience! I loved the little entry walkway just outside that gives the feeling you’ve been transported away from Ventura Blvd with the relaxing little bench, pond, and other decor. The hostess inside was warm, welcoming, and had us seated immediately. Service from the waitress was also very quick and attentive with making sure we had any items or refills as needed. On to the sushi!! There were so many appealing sounding options from the creative menu names and accompanying descriptions, but we ended up going with the Sushi Combination, ‘Studio City’ rolls, and some Spicy Tuna Rice Cakes. For drinks, we did a Strawberry Nigori Sake, which was a deliciously light and fruity accompaniment to all our sushi! I loved everything we ordered, and also found the portions quite generous, with both of us being left very full. A few notes: For the Sushi Combination, I loved that it came with a little side of miso soup. Relaxing and soothing, miso soup is always a must for me at Japanese restaurants! Also, a lot of the sushi for the sushi combination plate had a bit of wasabi on them…that wasn’t an issue to me, but if you’re someone who doesn’t care for wasabi, such as my partner, that may bother you a bit. The ‘Studio City’ rolls were definite highlights of the meal for the both of us - FULL of salmon, cream cheese, avocado, tempura batter, spicy mayo, AND more….it all went together surprisingly well and was an amazing fusion of flavor, creaminess, & slight heat that ended up working perfectly! The Spicy Tuna Rice Cakes were also very solid and delicious to enjoy! We loved everything we ordered for our dinner, and the ‘Studio City’ rolls are a MUST ORDER! From ambiance, service, and the sushi/other food itself, it was all absolutely a 5 out of 5!! I highly recommend and will be returning in the future to try more menu options!

Teru Sushi in Studio City is a hidden treasure that exceeded all our expectations. The moment we stepped in, we were warmly greeted by the owner, Mike, who made us feel like honored guests. Their genuine hospitality set the tone for what would be an unforgettable dining experience. The food was simply exquisite. Every bite was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared, showcasing the high quality of ingredients they use. The patio area, with its stunning design inspired by traditional Japanese interiors, added an extra layer of charm to our evening. The lively atmosphere was infectious, especially with two birthday celebrations happening while we were there. The joy and positive energy around us made the experience even more special. Even the valet service was exceptional, with a courteous and professional attendant who added to the overall positive vibe. Teru Sushi is more than just a restaurant; it’s a place where you can enjoy amazing food, a beautiful ambiance, and the warmth of a family-run business. Thank to Mike and Ali, we had such a memorable time. I can’t recommend it highly enough and will definitely be back!

Google
The atmosphere here is great if you get the chance to sit outside in the back. It's not as intimate as I would have wanted, but it's still a great spot. The food was also good, it's not the best I've had, but still tasty. The service here was fantastic, someone was always checking on our table and always had someone clearing empty plates. I would highly recommend coming here! If you do, arrive early to get a good parking spot!

I’m not a fan of sushi, but the food in this restaurant was really great. Went here with a friend of a friend who knows the place and we eat what he considered that is best. We shared around 5-6 different sushi and all were delicious. The restaurant is on this location from 1975.

The roll I got was so good! I forgot what it was killed but it had spicy yellowtail in it and it was amazing

As a regular customer since 1985 I have never been disappointed. When I want Sushi I want Teru. Simple. Fresh. I have many great memories at Teru. The restraunt has a romantic atmosphere especially outside near the ponds. It is with all confidence that I can highly recommend Teru Sushi.

Google
Excellent experience and service. The food was fresh and delicious. We came to celebrate birthday. There was a spacious space for big party. Thank you. Will come again for sure. Now it’s in the list of favorite places to go.

I love this spot! I try to visit every time I visit LA. The staff is always incredibly nice and the service is prompt. I went there for dinner in this visit. It was busy but not too crowded. I have sat on the patio in the past but not this time. Teru Sushi is easily one of my favorite sushi spots in the Studio City area.

Yelp
Our friend Christina Pope took us out for another stellar meal. This time it was Teru Sushi. Ambience was great as we were seated in the back garden area. It was a bit hot back there with the only drawback being a fly who decided to go for a swim in the gyoza dipping sauce, otherwise a great dining experience. Our server Josh was extremely attentive and did a wonderful job making sure everyone was taken care of and satisfied with our selections. The food was very good and well plated. The only complaint was everything came out at one time which made things a bit unmanageable for our 4 person table. I am glad there was only 3 of us.

Yelp
Freshest Sushi in town! My Favorite place to eat sushi in the Valley with high quality, Arash the manager gives us the most outstanding experience every-time we are there we truly feel welcomed every-time Ali took care our table and gave us amazing service! Some of our favorites were the Roll with me, Sexy Roll and Spicy tuna rice cake. Also for appetizer love the brusell sprouts, and spicy edamame !

Yelp
Good sushi spot with a very extensive menu with so many different rolls to choose from. Maybe too many rolls. They are very attentive and do a great job of checking on your table. The fish was fresh but the rice just a little on the hard side. I loved the OMG roll the best. They have cool little booths so even though you are right next to another table you are a bit separated. It's located on Ventura blvd so do yourself a favor and just pay the $8 for valet parking vs looking for a parking spot on the street.
google avatar

Yelp
Teru sushi is a great tried and true classic along sushi row. Highly advised that you utilize their valet parking as parking along Ventura can be a drag. The restaurant itself has an intimate vibe - good for a casual dinner but also for celebrations or a girls night out. The food is melt in your mouth delicious - be adventurous here and try something new, the menu is large and everything is incredibly well balanced. The service is pretty good - there's almost always someone nearby who can help or fill up your water. The sauces here are soooo good. The only reason I'm not here more is because I don't live close by anymore

Yelp
hadn't visited teru sushi in a few years and i'm so glad i came back! you can't go wrong with ordering anything here but my favorites of the night were the omg, casanova, spicy scallop cut rolls, and the albacore fried onion. there's $8 valet and some street parking. i recommend sitting outside!
google avatar

Yelp
Easily my favorite sushi spot in the area. Everything is amazing but I highly recommend at least getting the sexy roll. A++

Yelp
Always love this place and their food. I think their selection is good, the quality is excellent, you get plenty of food, service is good and the ambience friendly and great! Even the sushi chefs always say hi and bye as I walk past....which I love! I also love their bamboo garden in back which send you right to another place and time. Love their tempura, miso soup and their squash soup is yummy! This is one of my favorites! No question I'll be going back!

Yelp
As someone who loves sushi I am shocked that I have never been here before, it was one of the best. Really lovely and cozy restaurant, specially the back patio with the little zen garden. Their rolls were so yummy and unique, everything so fresh and super fast service. Will be back for more.
google avatar

Yelp
great service, friendly and attentive staff, the food is always consistent and packed with flavor! when available, get the blueberry crepe cake!
google avatar

Zean C.

Yelp
The quality of sushi is average. Not super fresh. They have many options. Most dishes on their menu are somewhat cooked or dressed. The staff were friendly. The ambience is nice outside. Wanted to try this place and I would say - ok. I would give another try again maybe after a while.

Yelp
I just had a delicious meal from Teru Sushi. The service was excellent. I had my baby with me and they were very accommodating. There is valet parking which is great and also there is parking on ventura if you get lucky. Overall i was very satisfied; 10 out of 10. I had vegetable and shrimp tempura, halibut carpaccio, yellowtail sashimi, a special roll which i photographed. It was all so delicious.

Shaun J.

Yelp
Oh how I love Teru. Fresh sushi every time, the service is awesome and it feels like home. The crispy rice with tuna is my favorite as well as the rolls Royce roll. The back has a cute koi garden and it's a great calm and cozy date night spot

Yelp
First time at happy hour. It's from 5-6pm and has an ample selection priced at $5, $7 and $11. The back patio that I never knew existed is absolutely beautiful! Service great too!

Yelp
Had a reservation and was seated almost immediately, which was nice. What wasn't so nice was our seating arrangement right next to the walkway where servers whisked up and down every two seconds, talking loudly to each other--probably would've been less chaotic if they sat us in the kitchen! We ordered two classic rolls and two specialty rolls--after about ten minutes we got one classic and one specialty. Forgot our soy sauce, had to wait another couple minutes to ask for that. The rolls were decent, we finished them quickly--then came the wait for the other two. We waited, and waited, and waited some more. A family who appeared to be friends with an owner or manager was seated near us. We watched them place their order and their food started to be brought almost immediately. It appears one must be good friends with someone involved in the restaurant for decent service!!! After about 25 minutes I suggested my partner dip the paper thin cucumber from his water into his soy sauce to make his own cucumber salad--that was probably the most satisfying bit of the meal..... AND THEN another 10 minutes later (about 35 minutes of wait between rolls total) a waiter hesitantly brought our other two rolls (a simple tuna roll and OMG roll to our table. This is the best part. He didnt immediately set them down but looked at us suspiciously. As he slowly set them down I reached out to move them towards the center of the table. The waiter JERKED them back from me and stuttered "d-did you order....." I kind of just stared in disbelief for a second. Yes, I replied firmly, 45 minutes ago in fact. And he set them down and walked away still looking at us suspiciously. Anyway, food is not worth the hassle unless you happen to be good friends with the owner I guess--unless you enjoy your date night being overshadowed by loud servers and managers and guests being constantly shepherded right past your table. Recommend for those who enjoy taking long breaks between their rolls, so you can get even hungrier than you were before you got there! Best for those who like being questioned on your order and the food almost being taken away from you. Only plus was really the ginger, we probably ate more of that than actual sushi in the time we were waiting:) Go somewhere more worth your while like LA LA Sushi or the likes

Yelp
This spot is amazing for the food, vibes and service. Even though the prices are higher than other sushi around the area, it is a beautifully decorated space and the rolls are addicting. You must try the lemon roll... it was the best lemon roll I have ever tried and it literally melts in your mouth!
google avatar

Ariana B.

Yelp
Service is great. We were seated promptly and food came out very fast as well. Unfortunately encountered what I think and hope was a bone in the spicy albacore roll. The spicy tuna crispy rice was also slightly burnt. Overall the happy hour is very good value and still tasty so I think 4 stars is reasonable though the bone really tainted the experience. I do enjoy their back patio garden-like ambiance, so I might have to give it another chance, especially at happy hour.

Yelp
The best sushi ever one of the reason I keep coming here they have sea bus cube Sebas and roll andsushi roll. everything they make is amazing. The food here is i end. snow and mint gave me amazing service. They are so cute.

Kimberly G.

Yelp
I can't believe this place only has 4 stars. Best sushi I've had. The secure is good but the food is what makes this place great.
google avatar

Yelp
I have grown to appreciate Teru Sushi more over time. Food is consistent. They had a delicious crepe cake at one point as a dessert option while the Warm Brownie a la Mode or Tempura Ice Cream still end well. I have yet to have the Pepper Grilled Toro though. Never seems to be available. Miso Eggplant is very simple but a good vegetarian option. Friendly Servers are usually on the go even when not busy. Most nights seem to have many regulars at this long time establishment. If you don't want the full steak teriyaki bento, the No Rice New York Roll is tasty and filling. Wish I had been here in years before. Love the decor and motif. Patio usually kept warm for chilly nights. Through all the competitors of Sushi Row Ventura Blvd hosts, Teru still stands out.

Yelp
I haven't been here for a very long while. Used to come here with my coworkers many years ago. Tonight my husband and I decided to have a date night and we ended up here. We walked in without reservations and the hostess greeted us with a smile and was very professional. She told us we might have to wait for 40 mins or so but as soon as a table is available she will text us. 20 mins later we were seated. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. When I checked in I got a free sale offer so we started with that. We ordered a 911 roll, OMG roll, lemon roll and a kanpachi carpaccio. The 911 roll was ok, the other two rolls were delicious and the carpaccio was super salty and saucy you couldn't taste the fish. The sliced were super thin so I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Overall we had a great dinner, enjoyed the ambiance, customer service was super.

Yelp
teru sushi is a great spot for sushi. their rolls are delicious, the spicy tuna crispy rice is great & i love their hand rolls. service is always very attentive, and the ambiance is more casual vibes. the wait can be long so i recommend getting ur name down.

Yelp
Best Sushi in Studio City- the freshness is top tier. Whether we're eating in restaurant or ordering take out- the quality is ALWAYS 10/10.
google avatar

Kristine H.

Yelp
I went in for Father's Day dinner. The restaurant was full, but we got lucky with outdoor patio seating. The service was fast. I had been here years ago and appreciated how they kept the outdoor seating charming. The sushi was good, though the Chaos Sushi was too chaotic for me. It definitely required two bites, making it messy to eat.
google avatar

Oriya M.

Yelp
Very good food very tasty, service was ok but very fast, ambiance - was chilled and calm
google avatar

Anna G.

Yelp
I always order from here when I have guests over. Everyone is always so satisfied with the freshness of the sushi and the portions. Since theres no option for soy paper online you just call and they will accommodate. Overall one of the best sushi spots in LA.

Casey V.

Yelp
Absolutely love Teru. I grew up in Studio City and moved to West Hollywood and still find myself crawling across the canyon back to Teru. Top notch service, ambience and quality. My server on Wednesday, Mint (?) was incredibly attentive and made sure my tea was always full and ginger stocked. Love this place and consider myself its biggest fan! Love you, Teru!
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
We used to visit Teru Sushi restaurant in Studio City, but unfortunately, we no longer do. It's really disappointing that delivery drivers constantly gather near the entrance, smoking and creating an unpleasant atmosphere. I hope the management will pay attention to this issue
google avatar

Joel M.

Yelp
The original sushi place on Ventura. Have been a customer since the early 90's. Always a great experience
google avatar

Mariana M.

Yelp
Horrible service . We never got our food after waiting for two hours . It's OMG so not sexy at all .Save yourself some time and go to Taisho sushi instead.
google avatar

Andy M.

Yelp
Excellent food quality and the staff is great! I've been coming here for years and love coming with family and friends. They have indoor seating and a great patio with heaters when it's cold. The ambiance is great with the pond in the back makes a zen like feeling.
google avatar

Kathy Z.

Yelp
This is a nice place for American-style sushi rolls and cute crudo dishes. Expect a lot of sauces, and heavy rice throughout. There's also plenty of garnish in the form of scallions, micro greens, and jalapeños. This is not the most traditional Japanese sushi eatery, and that's okay. Teru is a safe choice if you have a last-minute reservation need or for a walk-in. Seating is predominantly indoors and there's a special valet parking area right by the entrance on Ventura Boulevard. When it comes to the carpaccio, some fish slices are thick while others are thinner in nature. I know thin is more traditional, but I imagine many patrons don't mind a thicker piece of fish. As an example, the Yellowtail Jalapeño is presented thick-cut whereas a similar fish the Kanpachi Crudo is served thin-cut. Teru is located by Laurel Tavern and HOPE, both great places to dine. Teru holds its own, but there's a lot of sushi / Japanese competitors in the area: Shiki Sushi, Sugarfish, Ahi Sushi, Iroha, Yen Sushi, Katsuya... in the Studio City to Encino area, the list really goes on and on. I'd compare Teru to Shiki and not the others mentioned above.

Kaylee G.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite sushi spots it's so good and they have such an extensive selection of rolls and they're all delicious!! A must try in the valley, service is also so good
google avatar

Yelp
Once AGAIN! Love coming here for the vibes and the food done right. Staff is always friendly and attentive. Busy Ventura sushi spot but the vibes are always high and the food is always good. Always come here after a good golf day of whoopin my friends... Get in here and try it out and I promise it moves to the top of your go to sushi spots in the valley!!
google avatar

Yelp
I get take-out from this place alot and I love the way they carefully label all the rolls and which sauces are supposed to go with which rolls / dishes. Their attention to detail is impeccable as is the taste of their sushi. Love it. Will keep going back.
google avatar

Bridgette Z.

Yelp
Hands down the best sushi I've had in LA, maybe in all of the US. So fresh, so delicious, generous portions, whats not to love?
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Our go-to sushi place...Been a landmark in Studio City forever. Garden in back is great as is middle area for seating. Recommend Miso Cod appetizer or if you want entree - called YUN AN YAKI. Love the spicy tuna rice cakes, Crazy shrimp, Baked cut crab roll. Make a reservation-online OpenTable...much easier than waiting. Hostess', Wait-staff, Manager and Owner all have great customer service. Waiter Joshua is also friendly and a stand-out. Place does NOT smell like fish which I like! Only valet parking as it is Studio City. Go and they do have a small happy hour menu I think 5-6 on certain week-days.

Jenifer M.

Yelp
I believe my servers name was snow? It was really loud and I couldn't hear but she's was amazing. At the ended I asked her to just give me a roll that was SAUCY. and she DELIVERED it was a roll off the special menu so I think it's seasonal. 10/10 amazing service from her and she's very friendly.
google avatar

Marine B.

Yelp
My favorite sushi place!!! Every single roll I have gotten is so good. The hand rolls are very good too. I am glad they have meat options for those who dont like sushi. Service is also great. Love the little outdoor seating area. Highly recommend

Dominic M.

Yelp
My wife and I had one of our early dates here. We have been to many sushi spots in LA but this one always calls us back and makes us feel at home. Don't forget to order the sexy roll!!!
google avatar

Mireille B.

Yelp
I love this place have been going here for a while. Sushi is a bit pricey, but I guess you pay for what you get. That is fresh sushi that melts in your mouth. Service is good, I usually go before dinner time or before the rush. I do like their hand rolls their sushi is always fresh.

Mary G.

Yelp
experience but walked away disappointed with the service. After giving our order, two other groups were seated and before we knew it my spouse and I were watching the other groups' orders arrive before we had gotten all of our order. After complaining about the service, The young manager had a condescending tone aboutbthe order being olaxednin the system wrong. By that point our date night experience was ruined. The place in the past was better especially when the Iranian owner was present.
google avatar

Crystal V.

Yelp
If you check in at the restaurant, you'll get a free small sake! The rolls here are delicious and so is the spicy edamame ! My favorite is the 'Slow your Roll' - spicy but SO GOOD- HIGHLY recommend!! Also ordered the ' Latino Roll' which was very tasty! You can't go wrong coming here. Some rolls are a bit pricey but its ALL worth it. They also have a nice private patio in the back with beautiful plants and waterfall.
google avatar

Arash B.

Yelp
Best sushi I've ever had and the service was great too. Everything we ordered was amazingly delicious will visit again soon
google avatar

Ree C.

Yelp
Many bummed they've canceled happy hour, and the portions have gotten so much smaller and more expensive.

Kara F.

Yelp
This is our go to sushi spot in studio city! The rolls are amazing & fish is very fresh and melts in your mouth. The ambience is perfect for a date night- dark and sultry but still comfortable.
google avatar

Jenny D.

Yelp
Had a wonderful sushi date night at Teru Sushi with a cute little Coy pond outside. Had a variety of specialty sushi and large hot sake. Buzzing atmosphere and lively energies and conversations. Had attentive and friendly service all around. We will be back for another date night. Thank you everyone for your hospitality!
google avatar

Alana S.

Yelp
I've been coming here since the 90's. Great sushi and service!! I've become a vegan and am happy to have an avocado roll or a Buddha's feast roll.
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
Meh, was just ok. I live in the area right off "sushi row" and have tried most of the options in the area and was really unimpressed with Teru. 2 of the rolls just completely fell apart without any sauce even being on them, I usually don't have a hard time eating sushi but it just collapsed and was hard to pick up. There's much better options along Ventura Blvd, esp for this price point.
