The 20 Best Breakfast Tacos In Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"We often go to Tex Mex Joe’s for brunch because of the shady deck out back, the frozen margaritas, and breakfast plates like chilaquiles and the huevos rancheros. We also like the infinitely customizable breakfast tacos with a wide variety of ingredients, all served on houseemade corn, flour, or spinach tortillas (corn tortillas with spinach mixed in so they’re bright green). But when we’re feeling particularly indecisive, we’ve come to rely on the “Tacos Locos” menu with more creative combinations for breakfast tacos that we probably would have never come up with on our own, like one with carne guisada, scrambled eggs, and cheddar cheese. What to get: Carne guisada, scrambled eggs, and cheddar cheese; Hashbrowns, egg, and pico de gallo." - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion

Google
We really enjoyed the food. The salsa was the right amount of flavor and spice. The salsa verde was one of the best I've ever tried. The enchiladas had that good salsa verde and they were really good. The barbacoa tacos were good, but the tortillas tasted store-bought. The churros were one of the best we've ever had. We will definitely return when we visit Austin again.

Google
Perfect place to stop and eat with a good friend during busy workday. We got tacos and enchiladas plates. Tasty food, amazing service. Going to become a regular here.

Google
This is a great place to dine. Food and service are excellent. I enjoy migas for breakfast and here had a different spin on it. I had never thought about adding other ingredients such as my plate today had chorizo in the migas. It was fantastic and surprisingly different. Their migas are small, crispy, and bite size. Had the refried beans and potatoes. Both were very good, I would prefer smaller bites for the potatoes rather than having to cut them more than once to eat. Tried a spinach tortilla for the first time. It was very good, almost like a corn tortilla. Probably not gluten-free as most corn tortillas are. I would definitely recommend trying Tex Mex Joe's. i don't believe you will be disappointed. Draw backs it is a small place and if busy seating may be limited. Give this a like please if you feel this helped.

Google
I’m always treated with respect here. They definitely make me feel welcomed each and every time! Good people and Good Food! My favorites are the Carne Guisada and Mole 😋 Go try it out

Amber Sparks

Google
Very disappointed. Small portions, big prices, and minimal flavor. We will not be ordering from here again and have warned everyone else at work to avoid Tex Mex Joe's.

Jeanna Johnston

Google
This little place has great homemade Tex Mex food - even the corn tortillas are homemade (and that's kind of hard to find nowadays!).The people are very kind and attentive, and the prices are very reasonable! I have been here several times now. I will bring my husband and son one of these days! Please give this place a try! It's excellent.

Jerry dMann

Google
Been here a few times now. Family owned restaurant so expect a bit of a wait for your food to be prepped. Always tasty every time we've been there. Service is very homely. There is also a patio available. Try the mole- it is amazing.

Abi

Google
We loved this place!! The food was authentic and tasted homemade, the service was wonderful (the staff even lent us their glasses to watch the solar eclipse), and the patio in the back was decorated vibrantly (dog-friendly too). The tres leches cake was so moist!!

J, B.

Yelp
EXCELLENT & lots of fine tasting fresh & delicious TEXMEX FOOD = (chicken enchiladas, black beans, rice, tortillas etc.) We ate food FROM JOES' for 3 days as there was so much food in their boxes! SO GOOD: we R going back next week!! IB

Matt C.

Yelp
I ordered a crispy taco plate for lunch through Lunchdrop, and one of my tacos looked like this (pic)... like why would they think this is okay to serve this to a paying customer. My other tacos had very little filling also and the shells were broken. What a waste of money, this is just ridiculous, I'm never ordering from here again!
google avatar

Danielangel V.

Yelp
The did it again, this time I tried the double meat double cheese burger and they knocked it out the park!!! My brother had the Three egg omelet and did he love it. We change up our routine for you guys to tell you THIS PLACE ROCKS, the two carne geusuda taco taste good AGAIN, the biscuit and gravy is FANTASTIC , everything was fresh and hot !!!

Yelp
Tex Mex Joe's is a hidden gem that only locals know about. They were able to last minute accommodated my work team's lunch (9 of us) and were so kind about it. The inside is a bit small and they have a patio area outside. The food was great - I had the tamale plate, which might have been a holiday special. They Tamale plate with chili con queso was fantastic! I hope they keep it on the menu for the next time I go.
google avatar

Mohamed A.

Yelp
Amazing food definitely try it again. Recommendation for family and friends. Don't miss it out.
google avatar

Yelp
Good breakfast tacos and enchiladas. Outdoor patio is nice in the spring/summer for margaritas. Inside isn't the prettiest restaurant but the food is good to go
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Ive been eating at Tex Mex Joes for years even at the old location . But today was the first time I was charged higher price than what the menu said . I wanted to ask why but the owner took off and didn't want to be awkward about it . I got the usual enchiladas cheese which is supposed to be $11.99 instead it was $13.99 and my marg was at a weird price too like $9.79 idk. kinda of bummed me out
google avatar

Hunter M.

Yelp
This place is cool, and I like the name. There's AC inside so thats a plus considering it's like 100 degrees outside. I might have only rated 3 stars just because I'm so tired of this mediocre type Tex Mex food, it just kind of all tastes the same now. But if that's what you're looking for and you're in the area, I wouldn't drive too far for this tho. My waiter was very nice and she was very attentive so I think that's what put the extra star on top. When worst comes to worst having good service says something. That being said my food wasn't bad it just didn't knock my socks off or anything. Just your basic rice and beans and chicken wrapped up in a tortilla stuffed with more rice and beans covered in cheese. Not bad, not great, just okay.
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
The staff were so friendly here! Tex-Mex Joe's is very unassuming from the outside, but it is homey inside. I got four tacos. Three of them were breakfast tacos, and I chose two ingredients for each one. I also got the al pastor taco. The mild red salsa was great. My friend got the very hot red salsa, and he really enjoyed it. I would definitely come back again and try a plate next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Love them! Just note their new hours. No longer open for dinner. Sad but oh well we tried

Drea J.

Yelp
It's a very rustic looking Mexican restaurant but with an Austin Tex-Mex flair. Their food is awesome. The owner and staff are always amazing and ensuring all guests are happy. They remember you and your order when you come back and to me that speaks volumes. Overall good food, excellent service. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Isis G.

Yelp
We have come to eat here all the time, for years! We depend on them for breakfast, lunch and dinner and even catering for our parties at home and work. The owner is very invested in making the business succeed and has invested in growing the outside patio space. Try the spinach enchiladas, breakfast huevos divorciados, chilaquiles, spinach corn tortillas, I could go on and on.
google avatar

Yelp
We loved this place! Stopped by on our way out of ATX on a Monday morning. They weren't very busy at all. I'm gluten intolerant so I wanted to make sure that the homemade corn and spinach tacos didn't have any wheat flour mixed in, and they didn't. All of the tacos were amazing. The two types of corn tortillas were as big as standard flour tortillas. Our favorite tacos were the carnitas with the over easy egg and the pork and green sauce. They have a green and a red salsa. The green salsa was our favorite. We highly recommend this place if you're looking for delicious breakfast tacos in the ATX area and we will definitely be back to try their lunch items.

Yelp
I was tired of looking for food on Burnet so I thought I would give this place another fair shot. I just wanted decent food with a great margarita. Tex-Mex Joe's delivered and some. The chips and salsa is a let down for sure...but I kept the chips around for my Chile relleno. I ordered it picadillo style and WOW there was a lot of ground beef in there. The green sauce was decent (could have had more spice) and it was paired with a perfect portion of rice and salad. The real star of this dish was the charro beans. These might be the best charro beans I have ever had in my entire life! The margarita was a little steep in price but definitely required a nap afterward. I will be back and I now trust the delivery app reviews!

Olivia M.

Yelp
We enjoyed all the food--even the rice and beans! The staff was so friendly and it felt like we had been coming for year. It feels very local and intimate. We were just looking for some solid Tex-mex and they delivered.

Yessenia G.

Yelp
Food and service here is great!! Their queso compuesto is a must, definitely coming back here again.
google avatar

Taylor W.

Yelp
I'm from Houston originally and it's been hard to find good Tex-Max here in Austin. But wow have I found it! This place feels like HOME! They have so much on the menu and everything I have had is fantastic. Their queso and salsa are some of my absolute favorites in town! The owners are some of the nicest people ever and they always have new items on the menu to recommend! There is also an outdoor patio for nice weather days. $5 margs during happy hour This is now one of our go-to spots. So glad we found it!
google avatar

Armand D.

Yelp
Ok Tex Mex. The food was passable. The salsa was like a spicy tomato sauce. The carne guisada was not really tender and could have had more flavor. The service was excellent!
google avatar

Ana A.

Yelp
I got the nopalitos con huevo. The cactus are from the jar so all you can taste is the vinegar ‍ it's terrible.
google avatar

W C.

Yelp
We ended up here on Cinco de Mayo, and that was perhaps our mistake. There's a large outdoor patio area that was pretty filled up but we preferred to sit inside when there was only one other table seated, and the one guy working the floor at the time seemed to struggle with managing the tables. We weren't in a rush, so it was no big deal, but the typical turnaround time of getting water, an order in, etc. was EXTREMELY protracted. They also had a kiddo on this iPad sitting at a table watching shows really loudly, which was disturbing while we were trying to talk (just get/put on some headphones!). The complimentary salsa was pretty bland, and the margs tasted like the pre-mixed stuff. Queso was the usual but good. Our daughter's kid's quesadilla was oddly served with a mini tortilla bowl of queso instead of beans and rice, so we had to put in an extra order of those. The pozole on special was wonderfully spicy and the pork was the right consistency, but otherwise, it was a bit lackluster and the hominy was a bit too tough. The smothered burrito had massive chunks of (dry) chicken in it, and left a lot to be inspired. We liked the easy, no-frills vibe in here and feel confident that we could have had a better experience if we caught them on a different day. When a boss-fella guy came out to help, things definitely went more briskly. We might go again, we might not. A rounded-up three stars for now.
google avatar

Luna L.

Yelp
I like this place. I have ordered their food from Lunchdrop a few times, but eating in the restaurant is so much better. Service was excellent.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
You know what they say about hole-in-the-walls... it's where they serve the best foods! No bells or whistles as soon as you park and enter the restaurant. However, you will be greeted by the sweetest gem known to Tex-Mex. NOTE: Come for happy hour on Wed-Fri from 5-7! I ordered the Combo Loco Plate: a chalupa, a crispy taco, and a cheese/beef enchilada served with rice and beans. Also, queso addicts, this one is for you. You NEED to order the Queso Compuesto, you'll thank me later, because pretty sure this was the majority of my meal.
google avatar

Donna G.

Yelp
Cozy restaurant, good service and tasty Tex Mex food. Love it! It's out if the way and a quiet place to have a conversation, breakfast, lunch or whatever!
google avatar

Rolando N.

Yelp
Overall the food was okay. Standard Tex mex fare. Everything was good but nothing really stood out. Chips and hot sauce were really good. Nice flavor and consistency to the hot sauce. Beef enchiladas had a nice flavor to the chili. Could use more cheese. Never skimp on the cheese. Carne Guisada was disappointing. There was almost no flavor to the gravy. It was bland and needed salt. I ended up dumping the hot sauce on top to make it edible. In addition, the tortillas that were served were store bought and not the good kind. The sign outside said fresh homemade tortillas and these were anything but. Beans and rice were nice. Service was really good.
google avatar

Betty E.

Yelp
went Friday night and the AC was broken. No acknowledgment by the staff, no offer of discount, no offer for take out. my friends ordered drinks before I could object and it was literal hell. Needless to say, we declined to stay and eat. Don't know if I'll ever go back because of the total lack of customer service.
google avatar

Janet F.

Yelp
I really like this place. The dining room was a bit small when I went to pick up my take out order. But the food was really delicious. As I stood waiting for my order, a waitress passed with very tempting looking margaritas! I'll have to come back sometime and dine in!
google avatar

Bri Z.

Yelp
I love this place! I go once every other week or so. All the food is good and for a good price. Im getting tired of overpaying for crappy "mexican" food at other restaurants just because they're downtown or trendy. This hidden gem is located in north austin. The inside is cozy and they recently added a patio. It is a very chill environment. The owner, Marcos is friendly and the rest of the staff is great too. My favorite is the chilaquiles, it is my go to especially on a Sunday morning after a jog. During the week I have less time so I order breakfast tacos to go. The spinach tortilla is a must. Happy hour is awesome too, the margaritas are the bomb.
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
Absolutely LEGIT Mexican food that will leave you dancing in your chair! The tacos are delicious. One of my favorite spots in Austin.
google avatar

Kim J.

Yelp
Their patio is a neighborhood oasis and the margaritas are hard to beat. The mole has a nice kick, the tacos caballeros are fantastic and the charro beans are the best I've had. Plus everyone is so friendly. Lately, they've had a black cherry margarita on special and it is amazing.
google avatar

Auntie P.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem! I've lived in the same five mile area for the past 30 years and have never tried this place until last week. Their outdoor patio is such a cute space with a fan and a beautiful tree providing cover from the Texas sun. The queso and salsa were very good as were the chips and I have tried a lot of chips, salsa and queso. The other standout was the homemade corn tortillas and the carnitas; an item appearing on their specialties. The green salsa was also delicious. Looking forward to coming back to try breakfast and the Chile relleno! The margs are good too. Check them out during happy hour and sit on the patio!
google avatar

Serena J.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the servers were so attentive! Do yourself a favor and do the .59 up charge for the charro beans, they're so so good and I haven't had anything like that at any mexican restaurants before. We ordered the chicken flautas and the crunchy taco plate and both were cooked so well! Everything is so reasonably priced for what you're getting as well. I highly recommend trying them out and seeing if you can sit on the patio! It's beautiful out there on a sunny day :)

Yelp
One of the better kept secrets in north Austin. Here's the simple rundown. It's a family owned Tex-Mex hole in the wall of the type you'd normally find in a smaller town. While they were previously only open for breakfast and lunch, they're now thankfully open for dinner as well. Both the salsa and the queso have a noticeable kick, which isn't so overpowering as to be merely hot. My dining companion raved about her cheese chile relleno and the accompanying green sauce (clearly made on site), which also packed a punch. I decided to try one of the specials, the ribeye tacos. The homemade tortillas, steak, and shredded jack cheese went great with the salsa. The service was beyond friendly and welcoming. In other words, Tex-Mex Joe's has earned a place in my dining out rotation.
google avatar

Shirley B.

Yelp
Tex-Mex Joe's is off N Lamar, a few blocks south of 183. This review is for breakfast. Food: Assortment of tacos - bacon/egg/potato/cheese, bean/cheese, beef fajita tacos locos, carnitas with over easy egg tacos locos. Decent, but nothing to write home about. We ordered them on flour tortillas. Note: No homemade flour tortillas here. Huevos rancheros could have done with a bit more ranchero sauce. Overall the sauce was OK, tasted like it had corn starch in it to thicken it up, and it looked a tad too thick. Was able to swap two bacon strips it came with for a sausage patty. Service: We were the only ones in there at 10:20am, so reasonably quick and efficient. Friendly staff and we were quickly greeted and seated. Cost: Total of five tacos, a huevos rancheros, one ice tea, and a coffee ran us $28.17 after tax. Overall: Might have to come back and try other dishes as the breakfast was so-so. Small parking lot out front. Clean restrooms. Order Takes cards.

Yelp
We had a craving for Tex mex on a Thursday night. I did some googling and found Tex mex joes. It did not disappoint!! The food was fantastic and the margaritas were so so good. We started with the quest (amazing) and I had the carne guisada enchiladas (which I have never seen on a menu before) and my partner got the wet burrito. All was fantastic!! This is a true hole in the wall and so glad we discovered it!!
google avatar

Shanda G.

Yelp
Honestly, best breakfast tacos AND awesome price point (2.50 tacos and 2$ mimosa!) There's a BEAUTIFUL dog friendly patio in the back and they have a full bar and live music on the weekends! My bf and I live right down the street and this is our new spot for sure. Support local.
google avatar

Jordan N.

Yelp
Chips and salsa taste like they come from a store. Blackened fish tacos were good but they are made with cheap tilapia. Corn tortillas are made in house. Not flour. The corn tortillas were good and as big as flour tortillas. Margaritas are wine-based and only on the rocks (no frozen type). Unfortunately, they're not worth getting - tastes watered down, fruity and weak. Breakfast tacos are good but they won't be able to survive on that alone, considering competition.
google avatar

Joan S.

Yelp
WOW. We saw this driving by on Lamar on our way to church. We planned to grab a quick breakfast taco and get back in the car. WELL WHAT HAD HAPPENED WAS ... We sat down and ordered the House Migas with a side of bacon. IT WAS AMAZING! When I tell y'all this was some good food you better listen to me! I am reserved and judicious in my judgment. (My family says I'm picky as Hell. WHATEVER YOU LOT!) Do yourself a favor and visit TexMex Joe. You will thank me! My only criticism ...They made us late for church! Gateway Central ...WE'RE COMING!!!!
google avatar

Olivia M.

Yelp
Pass the salt, please! I decided to check this place out because of the location and the reviews, and also because I LOVE Mexican food. The chips and salsa were cool, not really anything to be excited about, but nothing to complain about either. I ordered the ranchero chicken enchiladas and my meal-mate had the bean and cheese nachos with guacamole on the side... bland, everything. Everything was bland, including the guacamole!! What the heck?! I was disappointed in the food that can only be described as edible, but the customer service was cool and friendly.
google avatar

Kels H.

Yelp
SO underrated!!! Hospitality alone is worth a visit!!! The patio is Perfect in the evening!!! String lights, good music & a super cute area!!!! Highly recommend you checking out this place!! Oh, the food is DELICIOUS!!!! Seriously, everything was exceptional, which is impressive for to-go!!
google avatar

Ruth L.

Yelp
Great breakfast in the afternoon. Migas were delicious and the staff was very attentive and nice. Would definitely go again and try more dishes!
google avatar

Melina S.

Yelp
I am beyond happy I stumbled across this place! The manager and the waitress were super sweet and checked on me multiple times to see if I needed anything - talk about great service and attention to the customer ! The food also delicious !! I was here for breakfast but I am definitely coming back to try all this yummy options they have !! Keep up the great service , you guys made me feel like a regular even though it was my first time here!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been eating here for years, and this restaurant, the service, the consistency and the attention to detail has always impressed me! Sometimes it's the subtle details that set an establishment apart, and this restaurant gets those right too, beginning at the greeting. Clean. The menu selection (food and drinks), and quality of those selections. The consistency of each meal. The service from start to finish. I can say Tex-Mex Joe's has been successfully getting all these details right for years. You know when your plate is spotless, all food placed perfectly, down to the bathroom being spotless (I'm talking even the caulking looks fresh on top of the room being spotless). Now there's a patio too. Paradise. I'll sit here and drink margs until those of you Austinites realize the best gems aren't always advertised in the "best of" articles...yet.

Anna E.

Yelp
Found this place on a whim. Chose to sit on the back patio, which was lovely. Highly recommend the queso compueso, so delicious. Food was fresh and authentic!

Ash R.

Yelp
Had a severe enchilada hanger fit and stopped here for the first time. I'm admittedly a picky eater when it comes to Tex-Mex or Mexican food, and this place was the closest thing to Abuelitas home cooking in the valley as I've come across in a long time. The sauces on the enchiladas were flavorful, not too salty and each one was unique. Salsa and chips were perfect. Bonus they make their own tortillas. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
The food here is as good as I remember. Had the Relleno and it was perfect. Meaty and cheesy. The owners was as attentive as I remember. I had some issues years ago with the service but that seems to be fixed. There is a lot of options around here but the food is great from the rice and beans to the main courses. I will return and go thru the menu all over again. Looking forward to it
google avatar

Shani S.

Yelp
Here's the thing: I don't reallllly want to write this review. I don't want to share with you guys how delicious this food is. How authentic so much of the menu is. I want you to stay away. Sadly, my conscious has gotten the better of me and I feel led to share with all of you yelpers how good this hidden gem is. We have passed it for years, looked it at from across the street as we go into Kim Phung and said "maybe we will try it someday" Well, that day came and we have since been back 3 times. I am partial to the lunch taco plate. Now, don't let the "lunch" title fool you, fellow yelpers, this plate is packed with food and is really enough for two (unless you're really hungry or just have a hankerin for some damn good tacos and don't want to share), I get the beef picadillo. Overstuffed with tasty meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato, wrapped in soft, hot, fresh corn tortillas, my tacos are always on point. We have tried the key lime pie - it's excellent, as well. The salsa isn't my favorite and just doesn't have that chunky, homemade goodness flavor I love, but that's the only thing we haven't swooned over here. The staff wants nothing more than for you to have food you love, an experience you enjoy and leave you feeling like you can't wait to come back and see them again. Give them a try!
google avatar

Ari R.

Yelp
So. Good. It's a little hole in the wall with great food! We were looking for Tex-Mex in the area, and this place popped up. I'm so glad it did! They have a vegetarian section, but make sure the sides are vegetarian as well. There was a bit of confusion. I ordered the quesadilla, and my partner ordered Black Bean tacos. The quesadilla was amazing, I don't know how they got that much flavor into a simple blend of cheese around veggies in a tortilla, but I'm so glad they did. The black beans had a refried consistency, and were well seasoned. The portion sizes are great too! I had plenty to eat, and even had leftovers. I let my boyfriend take them for lunch, and he said they were still really good. Quality tex-mex in a small establishment, we definitely want to come back.

Abbi G.

Yelp
This restaurant has gone down hill :( The mexican martini was almost undrinkable and the food was not seasoned well. Almost no cheese on the enchiladas/nachos. Last year, the food was good, but it's definitely changed. I hope they figure it out!
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
I'm actually giving 3.5 stars, but no way to show that. I try to limit delivery as a rule because of the costs. During this pandemic, I have done more take out/delivery but tend to stick with places I know well. This morning I was willing to try Tex-Mex Joe's, after all it's hard to mess up breakfast tacos. I also love they make their own corn tortillas! I ordered 2 bacon/egg on flour, 2 bacon/egg on corn, and a small menudo with extra tripe and, per menu, comes with tortillas, so asked for corn tortillas, plus 2 side orders of corn tortillas (2/order; total of 4 tortillas). The tacos were really good, generous filling. The corn tortillas were GREAT!!! The menudo was good, nice subtle spiciness in aftertaste. However ... The menudo was in a quart size container, only filled about 2/3 of the way. If that's what a small is, that's fine, I'm cool with that but there was hardly enough tripe to be considered a "normal" amount much less the extra I requested. I was also shorted on corn tortillas; aside from the tacos, there should have been 5-6 corn tortillas (4 from the side orders, and 1-2 for the menudo). It seems either the tortillas for menudo weren't packed or I paid for tortillas that I never received. I'll definitely give Tex-Mex Joe's another try, but I'll be clear in my requests when ordering, as well as asking when picking up order.
