We came here for my husband’s birthday. Anna our server took very good care of us. The wine, beer and cocktail were crisp and refreshing. The spiced Gulf shrimp were plump and delicious. The cornbread was hot and had a nice crunch. The rigatoni was zesty and flavorful. Everyone enjoyed their entrees of striped bass, short ribs, and bistro steak. Each dish was beautifully presented and delicious. The desserts of chocolate and orange pudding and cheesecake brûlée were the perfect ending to our celebration.

We had an amazing date night at T&R! The food was amazing and the service matched. I got the salmon which was great but I have to say my husbands ribeye was phenomenal. It came with the creamiest mashed potatoes I ever had. They brought out these corn bread Madeline’s which were amazing. Their buns were also delicious and the drinks were well crafted. Highly recommend.

We love coming here. The food tastes amazing and is very different from regular restaurants. My husband isn’t as much of a foodie, so he ordered the hamburger and it was delicious. We love sitting in the patio area on a bear, sunny day. It’s just gorgeous out there. They have coverings so the tables are shaded. Our waiter was very attentive and polite. The food is a little pricey, but if you love to try different foods, this is for you. We parked in a nearby parking garage as parking in the streets seems to always be full. The desserts are fabulous!

Recently, my wife and I dined at Thacher & Rye for the first time. We were not sure what to expect, but regardless of what those expectations might have been, this place exceeded them. The atmosphere was warm and inviting from the moment we walked in the front doors. The hostess that greeted us was friendly and helpful. Anna G curated our dining experience and did so incredibly. She was knowledgeable and answered any questions that we had, and she was friendly and personable. She acknowledged my birthday as well. The food was well-prepared and delicious, and was delivered to our table exactly when we needed it. The starters (Parker House Rolls and Oysters) were beyond what we expected and the main courses (Burger and pork loin) were delectable. The cheesecake and an After Hours cocktail were the perfect finish to an amazing meal. This may have been our first time here, but everyone made us feel like valued guests. I don't think I could have been made to feel more welcome even if we were regulars. Everyone made this an incredible experience and a birthday I will remember for a long time. Though we are only here temporarily while my wife works as a travel nurse, we will be sure to be back when we are in the area again. Thank you to everyone for an amazing night.

Simply amazing. My partner and I came here for lunch on a weekend. New to us and thought we would try it. The butternut squash ravioli was the best pasta I’ve had. Depth of flavor, nice texture, and the goat cheese inside made for a delightful touch. The gulf shrimp appetizer was seasoned but you could still taste the shrimp. It was paired with 2 tasty sauces. The espresso martini was full of coffee flavor but not overwhelming. Our server was friendly, helpful, and fast. Absolutely everything about this experience was a joy. We’ll definitely be coming back.

We hosted a 50th birthday celebration here and everything was perfection. The atmosphere, food, and service were 10 out of 10. I would recommend this rest to anyone with a heartbeat. Grateful for people that run such delightful establishments such as this. Worth every penny.

We chose Thacher and Rye for our 10-year wedding anniversary dinner and reception and were so happy we didn’t want the night to end. Steve and the entire serving staff were attentive throughout dinner (no glass empty) and so funny during our service. Josh, Carter and the bartending staff handled our bar buyout with ease! And Caitlin (GM), Carter (events coordinator), and Chef Bradley were great to work with on the menu and logistics. We appreciate you making our evening special!

Back at Brian Voltagios new restaurant in the same beautiful space. We sat in the front dining room which is less noisy than the one near the kitchen. We loved the food, presentation and dishes to choose from. I wish the tasting menu had a second choice for the main course. Se we ate from the standard menu. Delicious! Our waiter needs more training for a restaurant that caliber. But with that said, it was a wonderful evening with delicious food.

Yelp
Every Wednesday and Thursday there is a great deal at the bar -- their burger, fries, and a beer for 20 dollars, so obviously I had to go. A steal! FYI- only one beer is served for the deal. It's "Hank" from Olde Mother Brewing Co. which was a 16oz light lager. All three of us loved the burger -- which was huge: two patties, thick cut bacon, pickles, onions, cheddar cheese, and a burger sauce, yum yum yum! The fries have old bay seasoning, and ya know... Maryland, amiright? They were served with ketchup and the burger sauce. The two people who came with me didn't care for the beer, but that's only because they aren't beer people. I slurped mine up (and my partner's) and thought it was perfect with the burger. We also ordered new seasonal dessert items, which were pecan pie with maple ice cream and pumpkin cheesecake with grape sorbet. We couldn't resist! The bartender and a waitress were raving about the pecan pie, and yes, it was really delicious. I loved the maple ice cream. I had the pumpkin cheesecake which was so soft and delicate. I'm not a huge Concord grape fan but I ate all of the sorbet like a dehydrated person who was stranded on an island. It was very refreshing and cut through the fattiness of the cheesecake perfectly. The waiter was very nice and attentive! The bar was very clean and poppin' and had people either taking advantage of the burger deal or eating other things from the menu. It did get loud at some points, which is expected because it was the bar, however(!) there were no obnoxious drunk people killing the vibe. PS: I unfortunately didn't take any photos this time. Sorry!

Yelp
Incredible meal from entry to exit. By chance, we were seated next to the kitchen, which we thought was great! Service was top rate (thank you, Kahla!). Waitstaff was very knowledgeable about the food and the drink menu. The dishes were complex, surprising in some instances, and delicious. The wine pairings were perfect. Excellent espresso topped it all off. Thank you, everyone!

Yelp
Walking into Thatcher and Rye's imposing edifice one might expect a dank dungeon like interior. Instead, the restaurant is infused with a light and elegance. That is just perfect. Service is understated, but always on point. For a brunch menu, don't expect the usual fare that many restaurants trot out on the weekends. Instead, what's offered is an intoxicating blend of comfort, food and bold flavors. For comfort food, try any of the homemade pastas which are offered as a second course. The lasagna has a beautiful ricotta fondue sauce. For the main course, several in our party had the sausage and biscuits. The biscuits themselves made with scallion and black pepper are worth the drive from anywhere on the East Coast. For more comfort enjoy the perfectly finished fries with old bay seasoning. Our crew had a sampling of fabulously inventive cocktails from "bubble trouble" to a "write-Home-about-it" Bloody Mary. To omit mention of the scrupulously curated beer and wine list would not be right. While we visited on an overcast, late February day, looking outside the restaurant we are already planning a return excursion in the spring and summer to the open and airy outside grounds, which we were told has various menu items and a roaring bar scene.

Yelp
This was a memorable top chef meal. I booked this restaurant with the sole intention of tasting an authentic Brian Voltaggio menu. This did NOT disappoint. It was both creative and uniquely delicious with flavors I had to really ponder while still thoroughly enjoying. A thoughtful menu to be sure. Service was exceptional. Ambiance was just lively although I will agree that the restaurant could benefit by removing just one row of seating so that elbows don't literally rub (let alone rumps when heading to the bathroom....not chic) truly the BEST lasagna with béchamel that I have ever tasted (including all of Italy) and the sticky toffee cake with banana jam was a highlight. Don't pass on this! Bravo Mr Voltaggio, well done.

Yelp
Lovely place with a nice ambiance. Had the Lasagna - it was quite good. It's a small portion. I wasn't quite hungry, so went straight to dessert. The sticky toffee pudding was very nice overall. If one had to be really critical, I would say that I didn't really care for the apple sorbet. It was sour and didn't really fit well. Even a simple vanilla ice cream would have been a better option I believe. All the other components were put together beautifully and very pleasing to the palate with a mix of textures.

Yelp
I love this restaurant. We wanted to sit outside but all the brunch tables were in the sun, so we decided to try The Shed. What a cute and more affordable addition to Thatcher & Rye. The menu is on a QR code and it's a limited men with more "bar" style options. We had the chicken sandwich minus the bun and it was DELICIOUS! The food was just as expertly prepared as eating in the dining room, just not as expensive. Piping hot and crispy and the fries were also perfectly hot. They had a great selection of drinks. We really enjoyed sitting outside and listening to the music playing. It was a perfect lunch spot for summer. We will definitely take advantage of this option at Thatcher & Rye.

Yelp
We visited the restaurant on 11/5/23 for brunch to celebrate my mom's 65th birthday. I really wanted to like this place but it was a little disappointing. Among 4 people, we ordered 3 appetizers from the 1st course, 2 pastas from the 2nd course, 3 dishes from the main course and 3 items from the "for the table". We also ordered 2 cocktails - carajillo. The cocktail was good! It was espresso based and you couldn't taste the liquor. Delicious but dangerous! 1: Parker house rolls were amazing! Who doesn't like freshly baked bread. The smoked trout was a little fishy for my taste but it was good without the roe. 2: Oysters were fresh and delicious! My mom really enjoyed them! 3: Burrata was good! I love the Asian pears and pickled onion combination. 4: Tuna tartare was delicious! I love the potato chips. 5: Lasagna was everyone's favorite dish! It was very delicious and the ricotta fondue was amazing! So creamy! This is where it went downhill... 6: Orecchiette had an odd flavor. No one liked this dish! It's a bolognese based pasta but it didn't take like tomato. It was also a little bland. 7: Sausage and biscuits was 5/10. The fried chicken thigh was yummy but the sausage gravy was not good! The gravy was covering the biscuits so we didn't enjoy the biscuits either! So 50% of the dish was thrown out! 8: Burger was so greasy! The bottom bun was drenched in oil when it arrived to the table. We were told the burger would be similar to a smash burger but it was not. The fries that came with the burger were SALTY! Too much old bay. Some pieces of the bacon were hard to chew! 9: French toast was too sweet! My mom's had a sweet tooth but she said her teeth hurt and eating it! 10: Grits...it was like eating butter! We threw that away when we got home! $9 for butter. 11: Skillet coffee cake was okay. Tasted like coffee cake. Our total bill was $240 before tip. Anna, our server was very attentive and sweet. They sat us in front of the main window and after an hour the sun was burning me up. I had to sit against the wall to avoid the sun. Not fun! Overall the restaurant is beautiful and I love the building! So rustic!

Yelp
Really enjoyed the brunch here! We started with the skillet coffee cake to share. It was warm and soft and I enjoyed the berries on the bottom. I ordered sausage and biscuits as my main. It was very large and very tasty--the chicken was exceptionally crispy and had a drizzled sauce with a little kick. The biscuits were thick and fluffy. It's located in a beautiful old building, but the inside is very modern and almost has a gallery feel.

Yelp
This place was amazing. One of the best brunch experiences, but I NEED to come back for dinner. I can't even begin to imagine how amazing their dinner experience is given how awesome my brunch was. Started off with the house salad and that was great. My girlfriend loves figs so we were off to a nice and healthy fresh start. The oysters were also fantastic because let's be honest, how can they not be? So fresh and slurpable, made my Virginia girlfriend feel like a Marylander. The scallops were next and they were fantastic. Portion is a bit small but the flavors of the xo sauce and the shallots make really bring out the flavor of their perfectly cooked scallop. It was my first time trying shakshouka and I think I made a mistake...I set the bar way too high for myself. I was absolutely blown away. I've never tasted such an amazing burst of flavors with the short ribs, runny yolk, tomato sauce, and crunchy toast. Every bite made me wish I just didn't have to share, but sharing is caring and it was her birthday. Definitely ordering a whole order for myself next time. Ended the meal with the skillet coffee cake and boy was that packed. It's a huge portion! Pair that up with some coffee or tea (or an espresso martini like me) and you have a beautiful (slightly woozy for me) contrast of sweet and bitter notes. Splendid way to end the meal.

Yelp
Spectacular service from beginning to end, parking on the side is a nice touch. I can see why this restaurant has survived the test of time, hats off the chef and staff. Tuna Tartare (4/5 good crunch and zest) Winter Salad (3/5 fresh and salad) Ravioli (4/5 small portion size) Short Rib (4/5 must pair with wine, hearty af) Scallops (4/5 sou-vide with good sear) Parker House Rolls (5/5 fresh baked, tasted the love) Fried American Cheese (5/5 saw a fun menu item and went for it, delicious) Cheesecake Brûlée (4/5 Another heavy but flavorful) Worth the journey out here! Glad I kept this one saved.

Yelp
We had a great time. The food quality was excellent. The bread was amazing and hot when it arrived to our table. I ordered the tuna tartare as an appetizer, and I would say it needed flavor. The ravioli with goat cheese was nicely prepared in the celery broth Very cheesy for those who love goat cheese. the lasagna was excellent small in size and the steak was amazing. The pear shape custard covered in chocolate with that make ice cream was amazing.

Yelp
Thatcher & Rye offers a delightful dining experience with delicious food and attentive service. While I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, I believe there's room for improvement to elevate it to a five-star experience.

Yelp
Had a great meal tonight! Service was friendly and prompt without being intrusive. Parker house rolls are a must--but, buttery deliciousness. I had the salmon, literally the best I've ever had. Crispy skin and melt in your mouth fish--perfectly cooked. Caesar salad had Parmesan "churros," a fun surprise. Cocktails were really good, and I had the chocolate egg dessert--milk chocolate egg with salted caramel center sitting on a nest of dark chocolate. Good times. Thanks for a fun and tasty dinner!

Yelp
Excellent food, service and overall experience. Do recommend a visit if in the Frederick area. I knew it previously as the Volt but now T&R. Still very nice!
google avatar

Eydie Q.

Yelp
Been meaning to try this place since Volt shut down. I like that this place has a more casual feel. Still a bit pricey but I thought it was worth it. I got the shrimp and grits. Flavors were great and came with three huge shrimps so it was a good portion. The grits were a bit too runny and whatever oil they put just made the plate look a bit greasy. However, I still ate it all. It tasted great. My friend got the burger and had the sauce on the side. The sauce was a great dipping sauce for the fries which were thick and crunchy on the outside but melts soft inside. They were awesome. The burger was smoky abs rich. Loved it too. Finally for dessert we got the sticky toffe cake which came with a coconut custard in the side. Do yummmm. Would try this place again for sure.

Yelp
Have to admit we have a pro-Voltaggio bias. Loved Volt in this location previously. Family Meal was fun. The Voltaggio Brothers Steak House in National Harbor gets the job done and we love Estuary in DC. So we wanted to check out the new Thacher & Rye concept and thought brunch would be a perfect test. Reservations were made via Open Table. For the first course we had the tuna tartare with cornichon, mustards, chicory, french onion dip. The tuna was perfect texture and color and cut into nice bite size chunks. The cornichon and mustard brought nice flavors, salt and acidity to the part. The french onion dip was unique in a good way. Very light, almost fluffy. The we moved to the duck rillettes with pickles and buttermilk biscuits. If you love duck this is a must. The rillettes were perfect. The biscuits were awesome. Just made and still steamy. Had some herbs in the batter the just made them next level. Second course includes an amazing lasagna with a pepperoni bolognese, ricotta fondue, parmigiano reggiano. The bolognese and fondue were just perfect in flavor and texture and who does like some fresh shaved parm? Next up the shrimp and grits with surryano ham and grilled scallions. This was the best version of this dish that I've had outside of deep south. Grits were perfect consistency. Shrimp were cooked perfectly and the ham and scallions brought extra flavor to the dish. We wrapped up with beef. My wife had the hanger steak with a spinach and cheddar omelet and I had the rib eye with potatoes and spinach. Both of our steaks were perfectly seasoned and cooked med rare the way we like. The one miss was the spinach. For both of our dishes it was too salty. We think they overseasoned the sauce before reduction and that concentrated the salt too much. Service was excellent. All the staff there know their stuff and are working super hard. Free connected parking was a bonus for that's usually a problem in Frederick. Net/net this was an amazing brunch and we look forward to trying dinner there.

Alyssa N.

Yelp
The staff is wonderful, the building itself is beautiful and shows the historic Frederick elegance very well. The food is okay, in my opinion. I think the drink menu is okay as well. Personally, it may be over hyped but I would still recommend to go for the ambiance at least once.

Yelp
Food: 4/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Went to Thacher & Rye for restaurant week back in August. Right off the main street in Frederick, they have their own parking lot behind the building which is always great in a city. It was easy to get a reservation ahead of time and there is plenty of seating inside. I only took photos of the appetizers and forgot to take some of the entrees, but everything tasted great. I will be going back for dinner later this month and plan to add more photos then.

Yelp
Today we enjoyed The Shed for lunch. It was absolutely fantastic. The service was great, the drinks were delicious, and the food was unbelievable. We did the seafood tower and the burger. With the seafood tower, they add that little something extra to make it even better. The burger was amazing! Go and you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
True confessions...I am a Top Chef enthusiast and have long been a fan of Bryan Voltaggio. In fact, my daughters wedding rehearsal dinner was at his former restaurant- Range. So, when I saw the opening of Thatcher and Rye in Frederick, I got really excited. I love the elegant presentation of Chef Bryan Voltaggio's dishes and the fact that he uses local and sustainable ingredients. So, if you want to experience a gourmet meal in a relaxed and refined environment? Then, make sure and reserve a spot at Thacher & Rye in Frederick, Maryland. Thacher & Rye is named after Bryan Voltaggio's three children. Located in historic downtown Frederick, the beautiful architecture of the restaurant is warm and inviting. There are plenty of friendly staff to ensure you have a gourmet dining experience. We started off our meal with spiced shrimp and oysters. The shellfish was fresh and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. The creamy garlic-horseradish dip and cocktail sauce were delicious accompaniments to the dish. Homemade breadsticks and smoked pimento cheese dip starts off your meal. Then, each of us ordered different appetizers. I had the creamy burratta with pickled melon, basil, and olives. The fresh pickled melon was amazing and the burrata was creamy, but the amount of burrata was a little small for the amount of fruit. It had an addicting toasted pepper that set off the flavor in the dish. My son ordered the little gem lettuce, with summer vegetables, peanuts, buttermilk dressing and avocado frost. He was delighted with his dish. Our friend, Lily, ordered the cooked carrots in cooked yogurt chermouth and sunflower seeds. She said it tasted scrumptious! For our main dishes, Lily and I ordered the striped sea bass with Swiss chard and whipped sweet potatoes. This dish was cooked flawlessly and melted in your mouth. My son had the smoked chicken thigh served over a bed of fresh corn grits with sofrito. I have never had a more luscious taste of grits in my life. I could eat those grits for every meal. Thanks for sharing hon. The piste de resistance was our dessert. Mike and I split the Glen Farm cheese cake with blueberry compote and sorbet. The cheesecake was creamy and satisfying. It was amazing. Lily had the sticky toffee cake with caramelized pineapple and coconut ice cream. She really enjoyed her dessert too. My compliments to the chef for an exquisite meal. It was served on a beautiful patio with phenomenal wait staff. I would like to return and try the dinner menu.

Yelp
I've always been struck by the architecture of the Houck Mansion and found the building itself to be quite enchanting from the outside. I never had an opportunity to visit while it was Volt but I finally had the privilege of eating at Thacher & Rye when a friend hosted a graduation party there. The service was on point, our server was very friendly and accommodating, the food was fantastic, and it made for a very pleasant experience overall. Despite being extremely busy the night we were there the staff gave their best to give us a great experience and succeeded. The classiness of the outside of the building transfers well to the inside. I'd highly recommend for a celebratory event or a special occasion.

Yelp
Had an amazing meal last Thursday! Our group of 3 adults may have ordered a little more than we should, but everything was delicious, the timing of the meal was perfect, and our leftovers reheated just fine the next day! I could eat that green salad (who says that???) every day for the rest of my life! We also really enjoyed the lasagna and the ravioli, and the steak was perfectly cooked and delicious. We had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert and wanted to lick the plate!! Thanks to our server for excellent suggestions and to all for a meal that was paced well. If you haven't been here, you need to go!!

Yelp
The food was fabulous ! It was pricy but I expected it to be. Ambiance was bright and elegant. The Voltaggios know how to make their patrons feel welcome. It was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. I can't wait to go back !

Yelp
I visited Thacher & Rye in its previous iteration as Volt, a fine-dining experience in the heart of downtown Frederick. After rebranding as a more casual restaurant, I'm no less impressed by the service or the food. Gone are the white tablecloths, but they are replaced with an extreme sense of calm and comfort. The waitstaff is knowledgeable, friendly and always willing to help, and each dish is prepared with the utmost care. As stated the before, you will not be disappointed in the food. The menu offers a good variety of dishes so you are sure to find something you enjoy. There is also an extensive wine & libations list. Highly recommended!

Yelp
I'm over the moon for Thatcher & Rye, what an amazing dining experience! We were seated out back, at a lovely long table, with lights overhead. We were fairly far from most other patrons, except a nearby table with an active toddler - that was no fun, but not the fault of the restaurant. Our server, Kaitlin (sp?), was AMAZEBALLS! I could go on and on about her, but she was warm, welcoming, very knowledgeable about the menu and drink offerings, and tended to my group like beloved children. Lol, corny, but true! She quickly brought out water, then took our drink order and left us to peruse the menu. So many things looked good to me, but I narrowed it down to appetizers of beets and asparagus, and a hamburger for my main. Luckily I was able to sample some of my friends' dishes, such as scallops, which were TO DIE FOR! That said, the asparagus and beets were awesome too, well seasoned and plated. The burger was super tasty and cooked to my specification (med-rare). My only complaint would be about the fries. While they were well made, they were liberally doused in Old Bay, and I am not into Old Bay like that. I'd have preferred plain salt and pepper. We shared two orders of sticky toffee cake and I'm so glad we ordered it. Just everything was so good, I'm glad I was able to visit during my weekend trip to Frederick. I have no doubt I'll return next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
This restaurant is my go-to to bring out of town guests as it never disappoints. The food is consistently fantastic and the ambiance is nice, as well. The thing that keeps me coming back, however, is the level of service. Servers and support staff are friendly and attentive. Silverware and plates are changed out with every course, menu is timed for you, and you really don't wait very long for food or drinks. Our server Anna upheld the service standard ice come to expect from Thatcher & Rye. My guests could not stop commenting how pleased they were with her service! I love this restaurant and will continue to come back.

Michael W.

Yelp
The place was simply amazing! Service was outstanding. We ate outside. Bruce was our bartender and look forward to the challenge of craft meat. Cocktails. When my antique whiskey sour arrived, it was amazing. I put this place at the top of my list, and will surely be back!

Yelp
I'm so conflicted because I am such a fan of everything Bryan Voltaggio does. As someone who has visited just about every Voltaggio restaurant, including all the closed ones (lunchbox I miss you tbh), this was very underwhelming from what I would expect. And yes, I feel like that Karen off the street that says the tuna tartare was under seasoned, BUT THE TUNA TARTARE WAS UNDER SEASONED and I think you need to know that. The pork entree was also under seasoned. Everything was honestly kinda just..... bland. I'm so sorry because I do love you and now I feel like I can't fangirl if I see you again because I'm now forever the yelp reviewer that called your food bland. I do want to go back and update my review and give them another shot, if I can show my face again after giving them 2 stars for under seasoned food.

Yelp
Had a wonderful evening for our 21st anniversary. My husband booked online for 21:00 hours. Entire staff was very friendly and accommodating. The striped bass brought back memories of how my grandfather used to cook fish on the charcoal grill. The skin was crispy and the flavor was delicious. Thank you for a wonderful memory.

We were visiting Fredrick and stumbled upon T&R. It was a great dinner. They had a 5 course tasting menu. It looked great, but we sat at the bar and shared some plates. Everything was top notch from the drinks to the meals. Definitely a sure hit dinner spot!

Yelp
Great place for cocktails, date night, or intimate group. Enjoyed a solo dinner at the bar during restaurant week in September. The food was good, but I'd like to return when it's not restaurant week to try again.

Yelp
Wow--what a wonderful experience from beginning to end! For first course my husband and I ordered the spiced gulf shrimp and little gem lettuce. Both dishes were light, fresh, and delicious. Then for second course, we tried the uni rice with lobster, which was very comforting and a perfect portion to share between two people. For entrees, my husband ordered the Creekstone NY strip steak which was cooked medium rare and perfectly tender. I had the dry aged short beef ribs which was also tender and delicious. I definitely recommend the short beef ribs. The side of butterball potato purée complimented the beef dishes. Then for dessert, we shared the sticky toffee pudding cake which was accompanied with a Bartlett pear sorbet. All our dishes were very well balanced and pleasing to the pallet. Our server, Dustin, was friendly, knowledgeable, and paid attention to details. The cooks, servers, and hostesses we're perfection and everything was delicious. I definitely recommend trying Thatcher & Rye if you're in the local Downtown Frederick area for a wonderful foodie experience. During COVID, they do have temperature checks at the front door, offer hand sanitizer, and even require face masks upon entering. The tables are socially distant for guests.

Yelp
Not much to write home about. Which is disappointing considering the prices on the menu and fame of the brothers on Food Network. My honest opinion, the waiter had a chip on his shoulder which was the ultimate mood killer for us. Considering the tip he knew he was getting - I expected more than grunts and side eye throughout the night. Also, My lasagna was burnt, and 0 for 2 birthdays were acknowledged, despite noting on reservation and several other waiters executing for their tables. Not at all what we hoped for.

Yelp
After 12 years as Volt, Bryan Voltaggio reimagined the space in a 19th-century building in downtown Frederick, his hometown, as Thacher & Rye. The official opening was October 9th, 2020. Thacher & Rye takes the elevated dishes of Bryan Voltaggio and serves them in a more accessible (and less expensive) way. Here's what we loved: 1) Atmosphere: The space itself is historic, yet classy. There's a large indoor dining space spread out in several different rooms with an inside bar. There's a large outdoor patio with beautifully simple tables and lights strung above. 2) Food: Every neo-American dish was great. We started with the Virginia cured ham and cornbread, a must-get. It comes with smoked butter and served in a hot iron cast pan. Next came the rigatoni (a smokey dish) and a 21-layer lasagna. For my entire life, I gag at the smell of lasagna, but Bryan's changed my life. Rather than have the ricotta on the inside, he turns it into a fondue and puts it on the top. The burger is also well crafted and tasty. 3) Cocktails: They continue to shine with their cocktails. The menu is diverse to hit all preferences, but if you like sweeter drinks, order the downtown bramble. 4) Safety: Opening in the era of COVID-19, they take safety seriously. Guests temperature is taken upon arrival and asked to use the hand sanitizer beforehand too. Masks are required, menus via a QR code on your phone and tables far apart. If you want a great dining experience, book Thacher & Rye.

Yelp
Late review! Went back in March 2024. OMG. Top notch enjoyability!! Fresh bread was outrageously good. We got a bit of everything (anniversary dinner), and about everything was incredible, it costs a few bucks, but great food always does. Love it!

Yelp
There's no reason to eat anywhere but Thacher & Rye in the Frederick area. It's the best restaurant outside of DC and it's not particularly close. The food is always well executed and the staff is always attentive. We've been going for a decade (when it was formerly Volt) and have no plans to ever stop. Cheers

Yelp
EDIT 10/19/20: Just wanted to add, this is still very much a more fine dining place than casual. It's not as expensive as Volt was but it's not cheap. If you are expecting it to not be fairly expensive... you are at the wrong place. It will end up costing maybe $80-$100 pp if you are selecting items out of all the courses. To dock this place points/stars because it's expensive is kind of pointless if you know the chef behind the place and his training/popularity. I'd been following along Voltaggio's instagram and was waiting to see this place would open up. I believe they have repackaged Volt (wish I had gotten the chance to eat there) and it is now Thacher and Rye, in downtown Frederick right on Main street. We were greeted by the host who took our temperatures and advised us to use the provided hand sanitizer before being shown to our seats. Very impressed with that and this might have been the first place I've eaten at during Covid where we got our temperatures taken. We had opted for outdoor dining and it was beautiful on the patio/side yard with ample distancing between tables, strung up lights, nice simple decorating. Very homey, very perfect for the fall afternoon we went. Our server notified us of the QR code menu and also said they could provide paper menus if needed but we were fine with the QR. Here is what we ordered: First Course: I got the duck rilettes and pickled veggies plate whilst my boyfriend got the yellow fin tuna crudo served with some lavash toasts. I loved my duck rillettes- it was so unctuous and well complemented by smearing it on the buttermilk biscuits with some of the pickled veggies to cut the fat. My boyfriend similarly enjoyed his tuna crudo. Second Course: I opted for the smoked brisket lasagna and my boyfriend got the rigatoni. The lasagna was very good, very smoky and the ricotta fondue was delish. I tried some of the rigatoni and it was also very yummy, with the hen of the woods adding a nice earthiness to it. Entrees: My boyfriend got the halibut and I got the roasted chicken (Chef was kind enough to sub in a different dipping sauce in place of the ham gravy). The skin on my chicken was crispy and the chicken itself was juicy and not in the least bit dried out (I lamented not being able to ever make chicken that good at home.. despite following Ina Garten's recipe to the t) The halibut was maybe some of the best halibut I had ever tasted, very buttery and silky and melt in your mouth. The only miss of the course for me was the brown rice congee. Wasn't a fan of that. Desserts: My boyfriend got the sticky toffee cake and I got the pumpkin cheesecake which came with a grape sorbet. I liked my cheesecake fine (surprisingly not too sweet.. could tastes the warm spices more than anything like nutmeg) but I think I liked the toffee cake more, which came with a pear sorbet. All in all a fantastic reopening and revision of what Volt was. Service was great and attentive and I can't wait to come back some other time to see how the menu evolves and try new items.

Yelp
I'm not even sure it deserves a 3... I'm very sad to post this review. Volt was great. This is certainly a step down. At $100 PLUS per person you expect a lot more. We went for my birthday. They very sweetly wished me happy birthday at the door and when we were seated. That was the end of that. The ambiance was lovely. We had our pick of seats since it was empty. Clark, our server was nice, but green. We got cocktails - the Manhattan and Sweater Weather- both good. We asked to speak to the sommelier to decide on a nice red as they have an extensive wine list. Clark came back with a bottle for us saying 'he said you should get this'. We questioned why we weren't getting to speak to the sommelier to no avail so we sort of felt we had to get the bottle he brought. Not sure why the somm couldn't come over for two minutes when the place was empty. Very disappointing. The wine was fine. The old bay seasoned breadsticks and pimento cheese were wonderful. The carpaccio was fine. The ravioli was fine. Both looked kind of blah on the plate. The beef short rib was eh. Extremely fatty. The person delivering the food gave a lot more description then what we had from the menu or server- it was braised for hours, sous vide, and grilled. But still, eh. The butterball potato purée, spinach and mushrooms were delicious. Then on to dessert. We ordered the chocolate caramel mouse. Such a disappointment. Not only was there no mention of my birthday, not even a simple candle or chocolate drizzle saying 'happy birthday' but the dessert was not flavorful. Cereal crumbled on top. Really disappointing. And nothing was complimentary as a birthday 'gift'. I can't really say 'it's just growing pains' since they were Volt very recently. Covid comments: My QR code took me to brunch menu- easily fixed and you could request a paper menu. Other covid measures were taken- temperature at the door, servers wearing masks, silverware for each new course placed on a plate. However for my leftovers he reached for my plate to pack it. Other restaurants now ask if you'd like to do it or have them do it. I'll do it thank you.

Yelp
A high end restaurant that fully meets expectations. Interesting interior with indoor and outdoor seating options, each room having a different atmosphere. Staff is excellent, fully on point at all times, and there is a lot of staff for a fairly small restaurant. More importantly, staff looks happy, which is a good sign. Portion sizes were fairly fixed course to course, which I thought was interesting, and plating was done well. I was able to stick to a pescatarian meal without any trouble, which I appreciated. My sister ordered a drink and then a refill, and the two drinks did not taste the same, which was a bit strange. Overall, it was exactly the experience I would expect when spending $200 on dinner.

Yelp
We had a nice time on their patio. My absolute favorite was the salad with avocado frost--and salads are *not* my favorite foods. So kudos!! I also really enjoyed the duck rillettes, but it needed to come with another biscuit at least to balance. Cheesecake was also bomb. What really shocked me was that none of the staff wore masks, not even inside. I also didn't feel like they were mindfully social distancing when they could. (But to note, staff were courteous and service otherwise was good.) Right now the delta variant is raging and most buildings have required masks inside again. I just expected a restaurant of this caliber to be more on top of this. In the end, I enjoyed most of the food but I won't be back until the pandemic is over. Also there are a lot of steps to get in. Perhaps they could be more clear of how those in wheelchairs or strollers could get in easily. I noticed someone carrying a stroller up the steps.

Yelp
We went during restaurant week, great pricing. Food was delicious. Burger is juicy and mouth watering! We had the wine pairing with the meal, definitely recommend as it's 3 glasses of wine for $25 instead of a bottle for $50+

Yelp
Thatcher and Rye is just like Volt in that you get great food and wine, wonderful atmosphere and great service. It has lost its pretentiousness. Gone are the crumb scrapers, the artful way the hostess would lay your napkin on your lap, the sommelier and tablecloths. (So tablecloth's aren't pretentious but they've still gone) The food is still wonderful, though it seems to be less experimental. No more parsnip gelato. The tasting menus have gone, in place is a more stand three course menu. Of which there is always a vegetarian option which I am very happy for. But the food is still of the highest quality which you'd expect of the chef. Small bites of pure ambrosia. Everything we tried was a pure delight. Pricey? Yes! But the food is an art for the tongue. It's not a place you'd eat at every day. But for a special occasion, most certainly. Judge the owner on his food, not his business practices. And you'll be more than happy.

Yelp
Steven thank you!!! That was so delicious and we had the best time. The food was incredible. Steven was knowledgeable about all of our questions and we enjoyed his charisma. We had the absolute best meals and loved the extra care that went into the presentation...and making sure we all got what we wanted. While we ordered more than half the menu, im just sad I was too full to not try more! So good!

Yelp
I was astounded at how AMAZING the food at this restaurant is. It is prepared meticulously and the layers of flavor are mouthwatering. I had the burrata as my first course which was a pop of sweet and tart flavors, then the lasagna which was delicious. I also tried my partners goat cheese ravioli which was melt in your mouth delicious. My partner almost cried when he put it in his mouth because he liked it so much! I had the ribeye steak which was the best steak I've had in years. We ordered all the desserts and the ice cream sandwich was the best! To top it off the cocktails were delicious, we both had one with egg white (can't recall the name). Outdoor ambiance was beautiful! We came from Baltimore, so worth a trip out here to try this place out!

Yelp
The food was delicious but pricy but that's okay cause it's thatcher and rye lol. Service is always consistent and quality, that I appreciate. Ambiance is nice. I love the patio more than the main dining room.

Yelp
I am a HUGE Top Chef fan. Like I've been to multiple cheftestants restaurants on both East and West coasts. We had reservations at Thacher & Rye on a weeknight. We came in and we were sat immediately. Our part of the dining room was pretty packed so I am glad we had reservations. We were celebrating our anniversary so we were given a complimentary glass of champagne. Our server was kind, patient and hospitable. She paced our meal well. I forget her name but she had dyed hair that was like a purpleish color. The ambiance was modern with neutral colors. We started with "breadsticks" season lightly w Old Bay and served with pimento cheese. They were Italian style long thin hard breadsticks. They were pretty good. But very lightly Old Bay flavored. We also got the oysters. They were local oysters so a bit more sea tasting then I like. I wish there was more of an oyster selection but I understand it's a mid Atlantic restaurant. I got the lasagna. It had a pepperoni bolognese and a ricotta fondue on top. It tasted like pizza and was easily the lightest lasagna I ever had. It was wonderful. I would of liked more fondue personally. But it was great. We also got the NY strip which isn't my boyfriends favorite cut but it was perfectly cooked. Rare without being bloody so it obviously rested but was still juicy. It also had a fire cooked quality to it. The mash potatoes served with it were AMAZING. I don't even like mashed potatoes and they were great. So silky and buttery. His spinach was also cooked so well. We ended the meal with the goat cheesecake with strawberries and sorbet with almond streusel crumble. I really liked it because it wasn't too sweet. My boyfriend wasn't a fan because he liked sweeter desserts. I went to the rest room and came out and locked eyes with Bryan Voltaggio while he was cooking something. I freaked out and ran back to my table so excited. Over all it was a great night out and I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Yelp
I was excited initially to try it out after reading the reviews. We sat in the side dining area near a window. The shades had stains on them. Not the most appetizing to look at while eating. We ordered the burger. It tasted like a $21 salt lick. Our waiter was slow and not the most helpful. Sadly, I'd say stay away.
