What was once a very popular place named Galanga, after the spice, alpinia galanga, which they used in their food preparations, is no more. It is now Thai Me up; a rather catchy name, especially with it being located within the heart of the gayborhood of Wilton Manors. There, it occupies a really prime spot right on The Drive along with free parking. I kept driving by it, but noting it not being all that popular anymore, so I thought I'd give it a try to assess it for myself.
I came in at about 2:00 o'clock on a weekday, was warmly greeted and seated. Other than what seemed to be a private party of the owners or staff, I was seemingly their only actual customer.
I started off by ordering their "Classic Martini." Unfortunately, there wasn't anything classic about it, just vodka, not gin, then dry vermouth shaken, not stirred, with no garnishment, not even an olive. I think somebody has been watching too many James Bond movies. It was also about this time I noted two disturbing things. The pleasant background music had been shut off and the other group had turned the dining area into a loud screaming children's romper room of a place. Totally unpleasant and unacceptable, but figuring I could endure it, went ahead and ordered their "Billionaire Lobster Roll" ($26.00) prepared with the lobster as a tempura, avocado, asparagus, cucumber, cream cheese, and topped with "krab dynamite."
When served it was one of the most impressive ever in appearance. Then, also as for quality and taste, top-notch. I couldn't have asked for better in food even if I was forced to eat it in the midst of what had turned in to be a children's playground; one in which
I was eager to get out of and leave.
When I was about to leave the manager or owner or whatever came over to me to apologize for allowing the children to run havoc over the place. Hmmm? He was sorry, knew what he was doing, but did it anyway. Indeed! Then without even an offer of a drink or dessert or come back coupon, totally insincere and to me actually uncaring.
So, for a crap terrible cocktail, some really great near bordering on Five Stars for food, but with a horrid downright terrible atmosphere, how to rate it? As it was an overall crappy dining experience and I usually have much better, Two Stars.
