The 18 Best Restaurants In Chelsea - London - The Infatuation

"Sometimes SW3 can feel like its own world compared to the rest of London, but in Thali it has a restaurant of comforting familiarity. The bustle of this Chelsea curry house—complete with white tablecloths, red walls, and a lurid orange, creamy makhani that’s on pretty much every group's table—is impossible not to like. Everything is pleasing rather than perfect and, while the tarka dal may not be the most punchily spiced you’ve ever had, there’s little to dislike about this local’s favourite." - Heidi Lauth Beasley, Jake Oliver, Rianne Shlebak

The Best Restaurants in Kensington and Chelsea

"This much-loved neighbourhood restaurant offers all the curry house staples — including a solid murgh makhani (butter chicken) — that unadventurous diners could wish for, but those who try the more exciting dishes, including venison bhuna, honey lemon duck and tandoori wild mushrooms will find themselves a great deal more satisfied. Prices are good too, for the area." - Alexander Larman, Adam Coghlan

Excellent Indian food. Much better than your typical Indian and more creative dishes. I live in the area and I’ve been over 10 times and each time the food is delicious. The staff is welcoming and attentive and it’s always a joy to visit with friends or family. Highly recommend.

Google
Wont recommend to anyone who is foody. Food was tasteless. We ordered aalo gobhi, dal and rice. Pieces of gobhi were very big. Quantity was like it was being served to the baby. Daal was tasteless had to add salt and lime on the top. They bring popodam without asking for it and add it in the bill. Luckily we knew this trick, so we said no in the beginning. Service charge was 12.5%, for the tasteless food.

Google
It’s ok, typically high street Indian for flavour and portions are definitely small. Great for my crew dinner.

Google
Overall Good food with Authentic taste Pros + good menu selection + cleanliness + staff was courteous + thali is very nice + veg options + they took care of a small customization request Cons - quantity in thali was a bit less but overall ok

Anuja Deshpande-Ambekar

Google
Food is great... service was poor... More interested in gossip and less in doing their job like cleaning after customers have eaten.. zero stars for service!

Rajesh Raj Rajilal

Google
Good selections of authentic Indian cuisine. Really good atmosphere on the main high street. Good vibe.

Google
White tablecloth, scrape the crumbs off the table kind of place, but not stuffy. You can still dress casually. Our waitress provided excellent service, and the food was very solid. We ordered a fish sampler for two (which was an appetizer platter), palak chat, dal makhani, and naan. It was a perfect amount of food for two. The tandoori salmon that was part of the platter was surprisingly delicious.

Google
Quick and friendly service. Really kind staff. Delicious food, especially the CHUKANDER GOSHT it was amazing and the meat is melting in your mouth. 100% recommended

Yelp
This is a nice restaurant at prime location with a very nice ambience. I ordered a Veg Thali and it was nice in quality and quantity too. Staff is really nice. One should definitely give it a try.

Yelp
Very flavorful, delicious food. We didnt want to get stuffed so we shared a veggie thali, quarter tandoori chicken, venison tandoori. Great service.

Yelp
I'm from the US, and I've only ever been to one Indian restaurant this good and it was in New York. We were staying at an Airbnb right next store. I tried to find a better restaurant because this place only had 4 stars well I'm glad I read them because I don't know how you can't say great food in great service yet only give it three stars? Some of these yelp reviewer's act like they are fruit and restaurant critics and must be incredibly uppity. For me if a restaurant is really really good and you have great service you give it five stars. If the food is average for your service suffers you just don't rape the place because why say something bad they may have just had an off night mode. I only raise someone poorly when they're actually really really bad. But rest assured if you pick this place the food will be great the service was amazing. Go early because there's absolutely nobody there I was afraid the place was going to close down because no one was in the restaurant until like 730 and then it filled up. We went to dinner at six which is kind of normal in the US but we were the only ones in the restaurant.

Yelp
Truly the best Indian food we have ever had. My wife and I were in town for a business school and my wife HATED Indian food. Until Thali! This was a night to remember

Yelp
We visited on a slow Tuesday night and it was a very pleasant experience. The décor is upscale and modern in a rustic way. We sampled a number of items including the spinach, the spicy shrimps and chicken and aubergine. All of the flavors were distinct and not muddy so execution was very good. Naan breads were fluffy and flavorful as well. We'd like to come back to venture further into the menu

Yelp
Palak Chaat all day! So unbelievably awesome. My recommendation is gather a group of friends, skip lunch, come starving for dinner order everything on the menu and share. This place is awesome and it's also very well priced.

Yelp
I ordered the vegetarian thali - and couldn't be happier. Delicious, voluminous portions and a good selection. Friendly staff too! J'ai commandé le thali végétarien et n'ai pas été déçu. Tout était délicieux : les portions sont généreuses et la sélection, variée. Service très agréable! thali . , . , ! . . !

Yelp
I give this place five stars. I was in the Earl's Court area and craving some Indian food, so I checked on Yelp to see what my options were...I saw good reviews about Thali and decided to check it out. I was in a hurry, so I ordered as take-away. The staff were very welcoming and engaged me in friendly conversation. The food came out on time and tasted delicious, especially the chicken korma and lamb biryani. This is one of the best Indian restaurants in London (and this is coming from someone who has tried a lot of good restaurants on Brick Lane).

Yelp
Husband and I had lunch at Thali today...here are my thoughts: Ambiance: We were the only two diners in the restaurant, which was a bit awkward. But aside from that the restaurant is quite pretty, nicely decorated, and clean. Service: The hostess / server was really quite rude from the start. She kept texting on her phone in the back of the restaurant and never checked on us. We had to ask to order, ask for more water, ask where the food was, ask for the check. And she spoke in a whisper so it was quite difficult to hear her. It was quite frustrating. Food: -- Aloo Tikka with chickpeas was excellent and the highlight. -- Kachumber salad was fresh and a good compliment to the meal. -- Chicken tikka wasn't that great according to my husband. I don't think the meat quality was quite up to par. -- Crab cakes were greasy and didn't taste like crab at all. We actually returned this dish to the kitchen, which speaks volumes. -- Rice Pulau was excellent. -- Naan had too much butter on it but was fine aside from that. -- Complimentary papadums were excellent. Loved the accompanying mango chutney. Overall: If it weren't for the terrible service I would return here because the food was good for the most part. Unfortunately there are just too many good Indian restaurants in London to go back to one that missed the mark on a few levels.

Yelp
Good: Very good food. That's what matters the most. We order Chicken Five stars. Also, nice ambiance and friendly staff. Bad: While the service is good, it is painfully slow. They give you about a 1/2 cup of warm tap water and only refilled it twice in an hour (we had to wave people down to get it). The soda we ordered was maybe 5 ounces, and no refills. (No refills is common here, as is the warm tap water. Neither is a problem, but everywhere else has much larger portions.) The most frustrating part was the check. It took about twenty minutes from when we asked for the check to when we walked out. In all the visit was more than an hour long even though we knew what we wanted when we sat down. Lots of time between visits to the table. For what it's worth, everything non-food would probably be rated two stars, but since food is most important for me, it's four in total. Cheers!

Yelp
Good Indian food, thiugh not exciting. Had the Thali, which is basically a combo of several small dishes, and dessert, but I think I would have been better off ordering 1 or 2 regular size portions.

Yelp
I really want to give this place 4 stars, but the food just came out so ridiculously slow. It took at least 35 minutes and when I went downstairs to the restroom, the cooks were just sitting outside of the kitchen talking. Service was attentive though as they refilled our crispy bread appetizer and water. Food: +meat sampler platter appetizer: comes with samosas, chicken wings, hamburger patties, and sausage. All tasted great and authentic with some of the best samosas I've ever had. +rabbit: tastes like chicken and is not too dry, comes with naan. My Indian friend told me that Indian people don't typically eat rabbit though... +lamb on bone curry: very flavorful and delicious, big portion that comes with huge scoop of white rice. +lamb fried rice: rice is flavorful but sort of dry, I think this is just what Indian rice is like. Would recommend this place if you have a lot of time to spare.

Yelp
We had a party of four for dinner at Thali and we're able to walk in at 9:00 on a Friday night, so was concerned that it might not be as good as the reviews; that was quickly proved wrong. The wines are reasonably priced, although a small selection. We skipped the appetizers, except for papadams, and went straight for the main course. The table had Lamb Rogan Josh, Chicken Tikka Makhani, and Tandoori Chicken. The lamb was excellent, spicy but not hot, Tandoori Chicken was nice but a bit dry so the mint sauce was required. Chicken Tikka Makhani was perfect nice and creamy, mild in spice but very flavorful. Sides of Sag Paneer, Lemon Rice, and Pulao Rice. Sag Paneer was different than most I've had, it was pured and not as creamy, but nice chucks of Paneer. I'd recommend the Lamb over the other mains. Definitely go again! Only downside was the dining room was too warm.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I wanted to spend our last night in London at a tasty and authentic Indian restaurant, but without breaking the bank. I am so VERY thankful to have stumbled upon Thali Restaurant. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated and welcomed. The service was fantastic. The manager, waiters, and bus boys were attentive and friendly. After our first bite into the prawns (UNREAL FLAVOR) we knew to be excited for the main course (Lamb and Chicken Baghani). The waiter also served us a sample of the crunchy spinach salad, which makes my mouth water just thinking about it, as a kind gesture and to showcase what the menu has to offer. Sitting on the sidewalk, watching the beautiful people and cars pass by and enjoying the best Indian meal I've had to this day in London, was just the experience we had hoped for that night. This restaurant is FANTASTIC and I look forward to my next trip so we can return. MUST TRY: Chicken Baghani Naan Carrot dessert Crunchy spinach salad

Yelp
Do not miss! I've been here several times with my family while visiting in holiday. I've also taken work colleagues here as a change of pace from the big traditional fancy meal. Everyone left satisfied. This is a must visit every trip to London.

Yelp
We ordered the tandoori chicken wings and non-veg thali. The food was so good! Servers were friendly and attentive and we had a great time. Would recommend! Naan is soft and delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Thali's thali? BEST. EVER! We were visiting London and came here TWICE... and ate like lunatics. I ordered the seafood thali each time, and each time it was perfection. I was stuffed after each meal... stuffed! To the brim. I am Indian, and this is probably the best Indian food I have ever had at a restaurant (see what I did there? At a restaurant... 'cause my mom's is the best - of course!) But this place is totally 5 stars. I am dreaming of it now, but alas, I am back in the States :(
google avatar

Yelp
I must admit that I feel a bit like a piggy when I visit Thali. Their non-veg Thali dish, made up of six mini dishes, rice and naan, is heavenly and there are never any leftovers on my plate(s)! My hubby typically orders the chicken tikki makhani and it is just as yummy as the Thali dish. The portions are generous, the servers are friendly and attentive (although they have overcharged me/the hubby the last two times we visited--so check your bill), decor is trendy/clean. My hubby and take all of our out-of-town visitors to Thali for a moderately priced delicious meal!

SaintLous M.

Yelp
The food was good. The service was very bad. They charge you extra for rice. Two small bowls was $6 . Are you kidding??? We waited 30 mins before we were brought water About 5 ounces of warm water. Not refilled until we had finished our meal. That's unacceptable service. So here is your rating. Wish i could give you a zero. Warning: don't go here. Go anywhere else.

Yelp
Having been seated outside quickly was the first and only instance of this restaurant doing anything in a timely fashion. Service was absolutely unacceptable, and the poor food did very little to assuage my rage. We were seated around 8pm, and we finally finished at well past 10pm. Starters took in excess of 40 minutes, after waiting for an unacceptable amount of time for drinks and our order being taken. Venison tikka were dry, though the minuscule lamb samosas were good. Another 45 minutes later we had received our mains. Our assumption, like at Star of India and Noor Jahan, is that while slightly more expensive than the average curry house in London portions would be standard sized. What arrived, however, were multiple tiny bowls of curry with equally small portions of rice, the type of portion you'd get for a £6 lunch special and still be disappointed. We asked for poppadoms so many times it got funny - perhaps 5 - and even after the main waiter promised to come and update us on our order (in 2 minutes - I promise, sir), he obviously was still fucking about doing something that prevented him from serving us (and other patrons, I found out). I try to avoid writing negative reviews because I know how hard running a restaurant is in London and obviously, a single poor review from Joshua J can make or break a business, but this place doesn't warrant my apathy. Obviously, this place wasn't super expensive but at comparable prices to other overpriced local places, you expect something more than a teacup full of shit food. Wow, free rice, I save all of 1 pound per head and in return I get massively fucked on portion size, a complete disregard for the value of my time, and surely service - thanks Thali for making it easier for me to choose a curry house next time.

Yelp
Sadly, after being a loyal customer here for a year, I have to report that the food quality has slid to such a state that I will no longer dine at Thali. After a one hour wait for our palag chaat starter that seemed to have lost its way from the kitchen to the table and arrived soggy and cold, the tandoori salmon I had ordered many times in the past tasted like the fish was purchased 3 days after the expiry date at a Tesco Express. The manager's offer of compensation by way of a free bowl of mango kulfi was greeted with a chuckle and a polite no thanks. Noor Jahan next door is much better so I would suggest eating there instead.

Yelp
One of the things I always look forward to when I get to London is good Indian food. Something my neck of the woods sorely lacks. After reading through Yelp reviews, I decided to give Thali a try. I most definitely was not disappointed! The restaurant is small with a nice low key modern design that does not detract from the beautiful food. Not the garish pseudo luxury decor of so many Indian places. The waitstaff was very friendly and fast without being in your face all the time. Also, the air conditioning works very well so that there are no kitchen smells in the dining area and you don't end up smelling like you did the cooking yourself. Another grief I have with many other places. The menu is sufficiently varied and the wine list is rather extensive for a small place like this. I had the crispy spinach (sorry, forgot the proper name) as appetizer. Light, yet very flavorful and the perfect start. The main course was the non-vegetarian Thali, which is a combination plate of lamb, rabbit, veal, chicken and beef (if my food coma tainted memory serves me right) in small bowls with rice and Raita and a small dessert. The naan bread was crispy and moist. The good even extended to a great cup of espresso at the end. Sorry, I'm Italian-Brazillian and need my coffee...

Yelp
Terrific flavors in everything we tried. Perfectly cooked. Great service. Even have good cocktails - that I usually don't see at Indian places.
google avatar

Alexis F.

Yelp
They say Indian food is good in London. Absolutely true. Make reservations! We didn't have and almost couldn't get in. But they fit us in. Get the seafood/fish platter to share. Delish. Has shrimp, crab cake, scallop, salmon, calamari, and samosa. I love variety and everything tasted splendid. We also got the chicken tikka masawa. Curry was good and not spicy since I can't handle spice Everything was full of flavor.
google avatar

Luca D.

Yelp
Not sure if I should give 3 or 4 stars, maybe 3.5 is OK. Some of the starters were quite good, some of the mains too. My fish curry was nothing special and the fish used was of the cheapest kind. Also, considering the prices I would expect somewhat larger portions for the mains...
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Food very good with excellent customer service. Not air conditioned and we happen to catch it during a heat wave.
google avatar

Yelp
Where do I start, this is one of the best indian food in town, the food is really amazing. I was looking online for a good indian cuisine as my friends had told me the indian chefs in London do go an extra mile and they were not wrong in this scenario. The indian cuisine at Thali features mostly northern indian cooking and a few modern twists. For starters I had a vegetable hara kebab and my friend had a prawn balchao and we both share a few starters of pakora, palak chaat and crab patties. my starter was well made, the combination of green chickpeas infused with spinach and green chilli that was a divine calling by itself. for main I had a vegetable biriyani and a side dish of aloo gobi which consisted of potato, cauliflower and a taste of fresh ginger and lime twist. everything was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. I had the best time and my friend too and we can't wait to go back in the near future.
google avatar

Cat C.

Yelp
Impeccable service (crumb scrapers!), amazing innovative Indian food, and remarkable attention to detail. I was quite surprised to go there on a rainy night and discover it half empty at dinner time, though I was happy to be promptly seated. We ordered the mushrooms as part of the starter assortment, and they were like nothing else I've ever had, and lived up to the rave reviews I've seen. Every single dish we sampled in the vegetarian thali was also above and beyond. I will definitely go back to Thali if/when I'm in London again.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Very nice food, well presented and flavorful. Portions are modest, plan on getting several. Food is flavorful and the default spice level for their "spicy" dishes was on the mild side. If you like your food spicier I would ask for them to add extra. Oddly, more than half of the patrons in the establishment when I was there were from the U.S., on a Monday night and the restaurant was full. Overall: good food and nice ambiance. I would eat here again.
google avatar

Z-Y Z.

Yelp
Order Hydrabadi Biryani with Lamb. Not bad at all. Also ordered Bhndi (okra). I am pleasantly surprised and recommend this place. Great service. I will be back again. The only reason, I didn't give it a 5 star is due to the fact their Raita is too thick.
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
Lovely food and good service...but the tables were so tightly packed, I could have held hands with the person sitting at the next table. Opt for a table in the back...less hussle and bustle. Or right at the front for fresh air.

John L.

Yelp
It was our 1st night in London and decided on Thali, it was recommended by the hotel + they were supposed to give us 10% discount. The person that took our order was either the manager or the owner. He quickly suggested a bunch of fancy dishes, but we only were able to settle on a few. He was "nice" enough to say- let me fix up a nice meal for you guys! I picked out 4 appetizers and all of us had picked out each individual dishes, some didn't come with neither Nan nor rice, that was strange I thought. After about 25 mins the appetizers were brought out, instead of 4 kinds, we got 6, and 3 orders of each! Now we had 18 appetizers . Wow! They were pretty "generous" by giving us enough food but without much explaining! So my appetizers were good, but everything was in super-small portions! Just that portion of the meal was about 80 pounds!! At the end of the meal, the mysterious bill came, but with chicken-scratched writings which none of us could comprehend. And no where on the bill I was able to find the 10% discount they had promised. Overall, the food was just ok, nothing too fancy. I would not recommend this place.

Yelp
Unbelievable! We went on a Saturday night without a reservation but luckily they had a table for us. We started with some papadum that were great. Then, the staff brought us a crispy spinach salad (on the house) that was quite delicious. Our entrees, the non-veg Thali ( a sampler platter), chicken tikka, chicken with aubergine and saag paneer were amazing. The food had such excellent flavor- and by far, I think this was the best Indian food I've ever eaten. The service was top notch and our waiter was very attentive without being overbearing. Desert was a wonderful, not too sweet delight. I would eat here again tomorrow and will absolutely visit when I return to London. The check was not as much as I expected for such a wonderful meal with high class service. Wow- a must try!! You will not be disappointed!

Robert S.

Yelp
This past week I dined here on two consecutive nights. The first night, along with appetizers, I had the Lamb Rogan Josh. Very good. Service and atmosphere excellent. The second night I had perhaps one of the best lamb dishes I ever had (I'm partial to lamb). I can't tell you the name but one served only with naan. (They will know). No rice, etc. Thankfully as it was more than ample. Second night atmosphere remained the same tho I was fortunate to get a table buthe service was even better. Both nights saw a few Kingfishers consumed. Be back ASAP.

Sierra S.

Yelp
Wonderful date night here on Friday. Wandered in after Lates at the Natural History Museum and there was one free table upstairs at 9:30 (looked like maybe a few more downstairs) so we were seated right away. I had a puri and the veggie thali, hubs had the samosa and the fish curry, we each had a well paired red wine. Everything was delicious, it's a bit pricey but definitely much better than anywhere I've had Indian food in the states. Ambiance was lovely, candles and dark and romance. I actually thought we might be a bit chilly by the door but there were heaters under our table and it was very comfortable! Lovely evening.

Ashish J.

Yelp
Was close to our hotel in kensington. Went in for a late lunch. Had some snacks with masala chai. Was not disappointed. Kati roll was awesome, so was the sev puri. Masala chai was on point as well.
google avatar

Alice H.

Yelp
Friendly service, nice food and setting. Went with a girlfriend for catching up time. We got a little beetroot kale salad as a starter on the house. Had good recommendations from the staff who were very accommodating Special requests were executed perfextly. Casual place-will be back!
google avatar

Judi M.

Yelp
Obviously, this restaurant has some hits and misses. We were fortunate enough to have a hit. Authentic Indian food and spiced wonderfully. Our service was very good and attentive. We had the prawns and chicken tiki masala and naan, but the best was the crispy spinach! How did they do that? Was an amazing dish.

F R.

Yelp
Excellent. Nice people and great food. Go out of your way to come here if you want good Indian while in London!

May K.

Yelp
My husband and I both had vegetarian thali here, which I was craving. The food (bhindi masala, palak paneer, rajma?, aloo, raita, gulab jamun, rice and naan) were very tasty, although I found the palak a little on the salty side and the raita too heavy. The waitstaff are friendly and professional. The only downside is the slow service, but we were glad we went anyway.
google avatar

Seth A.

Yelp
This food at this small, elegant Northern Indian was delicious, although the portions are surprisingly small and unsuitable for sharing (particularly if you're hungry). As the restaurant filled up, the service became slower and somewhat inattentive.
google avatar

William P.

Yelp
Not a good - only one of the best dinners I've ever had. I am 58 this year and my wife and I had dinner with four friends and had some of the best Indian food anywhere on the planet. London, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, - I've been to the best - and Thali is better. Just go - eat - and thank me later.
google avatar

Lili L.

Yelp
It was the end of a long day, a long week, and this was going to be my last dinner in London [for this trip]. Alas we had no reservations. But we were able to secure a table with only a ~20 min wait. The food was not too special although the spinach appetizer was a pleasant surprise. We were expecting a creamy saag, but it wasn't creamy at all. Had a fresh, salad appearance, a pleasant crunch from another ingredient, and was a nice light start to the meal. The khorma dish could have been slightly less creamy, but overall wasn't too overpowering. The service was great and never was my glass empty, always half to 3/4 full. There were some cute quotes in the hallway on route to the bathroom. The decor was a mix of modern and traditional; lovely.
google avatar

Angela T.

Yelp
This restaurant was so tasty! A lovely find in the Earl's Court neighbourhood that our hotel was located in. The spinach palak chat was so delicious! I loved the flavours and the mixture of textures....this dish is a must try if you come here! I also enjoyed the chicken makhani, the flavours were complex and it was creamy and not spicy, which was perfect for me! The chicken in the dish was also very tender. Presentation of the food is very lovely! Atmosphere was classy and tasteful. Service was very good, the servers were friendly, and between courses they come with the little metal scooper to clean up my mess on the table!
google avatar

Aaron F.

Yelp
Did was good. My meal was delish, and my wife's was less so. The staff was nice. When I walked in, they acted like my lack of reservation was a problem, even though the place as empty. Other than that, the service was great.

Yelp
Food was prepared very well and presentation was excellent. Service was on par for the venue and they had a great lower dining area for private gatherings. Recommend

Yelp
Such wonderful (and spicy) food! Try the non-veg Thali platter and the lamb chops. Lamb chops are super spicy but delicious dipped in the cucumber yogurt.

Yelp
Best Indian restaurant we found while visiting London in early January. The food was tasty, came out speedily and the information we got about THALI style food made it even more enjoyable. Great and attentive staff as well. What a find in a darling location! Will be back for sure.

Elise L.

Yelp
Seriously, best Indian food ever. We eat Indian food once a week and have tried many restaurants, but Thali is truly special. The food has so much flavor, I can't wait to come back.
