The Best Indian Restaurants Around Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Thaliwala, a sister restaurant to Minneapolis’s MomoDosa and Gorkha Palace, has a fast-casual feel. “Thali,” of course, means “plate” — these meals are served on round silver trays, with small portions of daal, peppery mustard greens, curried vegetables, and zippy cucumber salad complementing the rich main dish (paneer or chicken tikka masala, sautéed okra, pork, or lamb vindaloo). They’re the ultimate balanced meal, as nourishing as they are tasty. A sweet bite of cardamon-laced kheer brings them full circle." - James Norton

We were absolutely amazed by the chef's tasting menu! Each dish was presented like a work of art, and the staff made us feel completely at home as we savored some Samosa Chaat while waiting for our takeout. This place truly exceeded my expectations. It's not often you find a place where everything comes together so perfectly. I highly recommend it!

Google
First time here as we are always looking for amazing Indian Food and we found it here! Service was outstanding and the choices of dishes were amazing. This place has the best Indian Food we have found so far hands down! We don't mind the 45 min drive...worth it!

Google
This is a new MUST VISIT restaurant! Since I moved into the area I keep going there 3 times a week! The service is exceptional for takeout or dine in. Food is on point, best quality and delicious, authentic and made with love and care. The many is ideal for vegetarians and gluten free patrons. Can’t recommend this place enough. It is simply the best India food in Minnesota. I’ve been to many in the north and south of Minneapolis and St Paul, Thaliwala take #1 place!!! MVP

Google
Not Minnesota Spice. Had the Spicy Mango Lamb Curry at hot and it was delicious. Iced tea was fresh and had a nice additional flavor. Service was prompt and attentive and staff is amazingly polite. Food was fresh and amazing. Glad we found the place.

Google
We stopped here on a fluke and found a wonderful new place to eat. The service was great. Our waiter was very friendly and went out of his way to make sure we were good. The food was excellent. We will be back.

Google
We went to see if Thaliwala could replace our go to Indian restaurant as it’s much closer. It was amazing food and very friendly staff. Thaliwala is our new favorite location for Indian food. We sampled Aloo Tikki Chaat, Samosa, non veg Thali, and of course Chicken Tikka Masala. All was delicious. Thaliwala is under new management and hey have updated the menu and removed the automatic service charge.

Google
I’ve bought twice from here previously and was absolutely amazed. Under the new Management things have changed drastically. We ordered food through Uber Eats, three of six items were completely missing. Rice was 2/3 of what it used to be. Curry stated it had peas and mushrooms in coconut curry instead, there were carrots, peas, and beans. It not taste like a coconut based curry. They should at least update their menu card. The lchicken soup look like some beef colored broth. The fish was completely bland and uncookedl (fried fish). Did not send the 2 desserts and the Indian coffee.this was after. 70 min wait time I will definitely not be buying from this area again.

Google
One of my very best experiences at Indian cuisine. Kirn is on point with positive attitude, attentiveness, and phenomenal suggestions. Thanks so much for a wonderful overall experience. My son was even able to enjoy the food because Kirn helped find the just right thing for us.

Yelp
Amazing food, amazing service, and great space to get together with friends and family. It's easily accessible and the staff were amazing to work with. Our server gave us great recommendations on appetizers. I had the mushroom masala and it was the table's favorite. Will definitely be going back.

Yelp
Oh my word. This place is awesome and well worth the drive. I came here to meet a family member who was visiting from out of town and picked it because it was in a mutually agreeable location. Located in Chanhassen's Market Square (right between the liquor store and the hardware store) this restaurant is ultra-convenient and has ample parking. It does a brisk take-out business as well. While there weren't many dine-in patrons during lunch (perfect for catching up and enjoying one another's company), several people came in to pick up orders. The space was decorated simply and felt comfortable, and we were greeted warmly. Their menu is extensive and features plenty of well-known and unique Indian and Himalayan dishes. There's something for everyone here (it's a great choice for a group that has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian eaters). We really appreciated the menu suggestions, too. We had the Manchurian Vegetables to start. They were really tasty and had just a little bite. I thought they were the perfect blend of sweet, salty, tart, and spicy. For our entrees, we ordered the vegetable momos, the salmon coconut curry, and chole bature. (The latter was a recommendation, and I am so glad I took it! I was originally going to order the totally new-to-me pindi chana, but this one comes with both the pindi chana and the batura, a lovely puffed-up bread, plus some spiced raw veggies for crunch. A-plus dish.) Everything was delicious and spiced perfectly. We all raved about the flavors and textures. Everything was cooked perfectly, had just the right amount of salt, and had beautifully balanced seasonings. I will definitely be coming back for one of their thalis sometime.

Yelp
I finally tried the Goat Curry and it tasted just like the lamb, lol. I did try some new-to-me dishes, the Palak Paneer and Samosas. Unsure whether I would like paneer I can now slap myself because it's delicious. The spinach (palak or saag, depending on the restaurant) was rich and flavorful. The Samosas were good, but now I've tried them I can skip them. Not a fan. The Garlic naan was outstanding. Again, the spice level is so good I get medium+ now and it's perfect. Makes my scalp prickle and my nose run which says everything.

Yelp
Came here with a group excited for the thali, only to arrive learning that there's new management & they no longer offer it on the menu. We were all very bummed by this but we stayed and tried a bunch of other stuff still - momos, chicken 65, garlic naan & more. It was decent but nothing wow if you're familiar with Nepali food and quite a trek for those of us on the St Paul side. This place is a good option for those living nearby but imo, not worth the drive for those in the cities since other places do these same dishes. The servers were nice & it was very quiet so worked well for our mtg though.

Yelp
Really great Indian food. A favorite among my Indian friends. Service always warm and friendly.

Yelp
Wow just wow!! Totally authentic food. I went with some of my friends from India and they knew right away what to order - an off the menu platter Thali that looked like a lot of small plates of variety of foods. Beautiful presentation on a large silver platter with lots of other bowls inside it. I ordered chicken curry and vegetables and the curry was so so sooo perfect (mild) while my friends ate "spicy Indian style" food that when I had a bite, I nearly died from the spicy LOL Garlic naan bread to die for. Would go back in a heartbeat. Sad I didn't get any pictures because I was too excited to eat. Service wonderful. Large restaurant seating area. Ample parking.

Yelp
Outstanding, authentic Indian food, made with love. I've eaten at many Indian restaurants around the metro, and Thaliwala is heads and shoulders about the rest!

Yelp
If you find "typical" Indian food to be a mishmash of spices covering veggies or a protein in a casserole-style dish, head over to Thaliwala, which recently opened in a nondescript strip mall in Chanhassen. This sparkling clean, friendly restaurant offers traditional Indian fare, but their specialty is "Thali's," or plates. A plate is a large metal serving plate rimmed with metal bowls, each containing a small portion of chicken, lamb, or veggies seeped in delicious sauces, basmati or brown rice, and a variety of vegetables, lentils, a thick Indian soup. Each plate comes with papadums, but several types of nan are also available, as are the familiar samosas and momos, a meat or vegetable-filled dumpling. Dessert is Kheer, a sweet pudding made of rice, sugar, and condensed milk topped with freshly grated cardamom. There is also a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. My take: Refreshingly different and delicious. I'm going back and hope to see you there.

Yelp
The owner and waitstaff are so very nice. The food was delicious and they give you a wide range of spice levels from mild to mild plus medium, medium plus, hot, super hot. Very reasonably priced and delicious. Large amount of choices on the menu and the restaurant was spotless clean.

Yelp
Thaliwala is a hidden gem providing very authentic North Indian food in Chanhassen. Their management has changed recently, earlier this was a Nepali restaurant, now, while they have retained the 'momos', entire rest of the menu has been refreshed with a lot of options which you won't find elsewhere. The best thing is the staff and the Chef, who are extremely friendly and do ensure that you get a very pleasant experience along with good food. We tried Amritsari Chhole Kulcha and a non veg Thali. Both the items were very tasty and as per our spice palate. Non veg Thali had an appetizer, one chicken and one lamb dish along with dal and a dessert. They were very accommodating when I requested a few changes. Overall very good food, lot of options, reasonable pricing and excellent service. DON'T MISS this one !!

Yelp
This place was great. We got chicken momo, the habanero sauce for it was delicious. We also got Aaloo Bhindi ( all vegetarian) and Lamb Vindaloo along with Veggie Pakora & Garlic Naan. Everything was very good. Lamb was on point. The Aaloo was a little salty, but still good. I will order again.

Yelp
The food is average, nothing tasty to remember afterwards. The owner was welcoming and asked how was everything with a pleasant smile and anticipating wonderful comments, so I didn't have the heart to be honest to him. They should improve on food taste, I like the location, cleanliness and staff there.

Carrie B.

Yelp
Amazing food! They are very sensitive to the spiciness and mean it when they say mild. No heartburn here. Looking forward to going up a heat level next time!

Linda B.

Yelp
We had a big order and it was ready when promised. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious! Even though we didn't eat at the restaurant, I checked it out while waiting for the food and the place seemed very cleaned inviting. An employee even offered me water. So glad we found an authentic Indian restaurant near our home!

Bridget D.

Yelp
Amazing Indian food in Chanhassen! I ordered the buttered chicken and it was outstanding! Full of flavor and good quality chicken! Fast and friendly service! Highly recommend for Indian food in the SW suburbs!

Yelp
Saw this place on tiktok and decided to come in and give it a chance. The menu is simple. You choose your protein and get a selection of various sides dishes with rice and lentil crackers. You can add on things like Naan and hot sauce. They also have appetizers like momos and some alcoholic beers and nonalcoholic beverages. I got paneer thala and my partner got chicken. We got a side of garlic Naan and 12 veggie momos. I got a masala Chai. I enjoyed it all. It tasted great and it was a lot of food. Went home with three containers of leftovers! The hot sauce was surprisingly good and had some decent heat I would recommend this place for anybody considering trying it out.

Victoria V.

Yelp
Kiren is friendly & good at suggesting different foods to try. We've eaten here twice and love everything we've ordered. Fresh distinct flavors not greasy so happy to have you close by.
google avatar

Jana C.

Yelp
Delicious! Best naan we've ever had. Always friendly service. A great option for a quiet and relaxing dinner!
google avatar

Suzette T.

Yelp
Simply amazing food. The restaurant was spotless the staff friendly. I think it's safe to say this is the best Indian food I have ever had. The food is so fresh, seasoned and cooked to perfection. The pakora was so crisp and fresh without being greasy, the dumplings were a delicious addition, the naan obviously fresh and hot. We also had Chicken Tiki Masala with big chunks of chicken that was seasoned exactly as we ordered. We ate every single bite of our meal, most at the restaurant the remainder within 2 hours of getting home. We will return every time we get to the cities!
google avatar

Tam L.

Yelp
This place was amazing! We came in & enjoyed our dinner. Plenty of vegetarian options too. The curry and all the food was so flavorful. The staff were so kind. Don't delay, go here for your next dinner.
google avatar

Kert G.

Yelp
Momos were great. Kids loved it. Service was good and receptive. Only thing is anything like dipping sauces and chutneys straight from the fridge you may want to check if it's still good or gone bad before serving them. Glad to see them doing good here in Chan.

Toni T.

Yelp
Amazing food and great service. Good value too. We like the chicken tikka masala, beef biriani and naan bread.

Kate B.

Yelp
Thaliwala is our favorite Indian spot, and we feel so lucky to have an authentic restaurant out here in Chanhassen! Delicious and kind service, even a sweet note on our to go order. :)

Alisha S.

Yelp
I've been eating at Thaliwala once a month for the past year. Last night we ordered takeout. The food had completely changed. The chicken tikki masala was not creamy at all and was a completely different color. The naan had so much garlic, I almost couldn't eat it. This leads me to believe there is a different chef or they sold the restaurant and kept the name. I'm warning you that if you lived the old food, this is not at all as good. The menu has also changed. The review by Kate b. Shows the old food. Also, they used to write a smiley face on the cover of the rice every time. The new order didn't have it.
google avatar

Missy C.

Yelp
Order at the counter. So look at the menu before you come to avoid pressure. Food is amazing and the staff are so courteous. The Chef came out to check our satisfaction. We did the higher heat option on both meals. Not to hot for us. Nan was so nice to dip into the two different sauces. Vindaloo and masala! Casual ambience.

Sam G.

Yelp
One of the rare authentic North Indian restaurants in the suburbs. Only place with a Makke ki Roti and Sarso ka saag. Under new ownership in 2024 with a revamped menu. Worth the trip. Gol guppe, mango chicken are a must have.

Armando M.

Yelp
Very good Food definitely a place where I would return to eat! Friendly service! Nice and clean place good ambiance!
google avatar

Valerie B.

Yelp
The service was friendly, fast, and courteous. The food was high quality with nice spice levels - customizable by taste. The menu had as many vegetarian options as options with meat, which was nice for our family since my daughter chooses to eat vegetarian. The nan was fresh and delightful. I will be returning soon

Erik S.

Yelp
This place should be packed! I'm in town on business and this is the 2nd time I've stopped by for to go. The place is spotless, the people are so nice, and they do an amazing job packaging up everything. The food was amazing too! I got the chicken curry and aloo bhindi.

Kelly W.

Yelp
Food is SO GOOD. Have been waiting for a good Indian restaurant in Chan and this does not disappoint!!
google avatar

Vita B.

Yelp
They add them self a tip even if you take out or eat inside . You order at the counter and then sit yourself. They only bring you the food and then you are on your own. The momos were ok dipping sauce made them better. The presentation of food was good. The curry was good but you can't add spice to it , spicy sauce on the side is not spicy . We liked about 50 percent of what was on the plate . I wish we had more choices to pick from as it's picked for you except the main dish. Naan bread is extra . Lassi was the best part of this meal. We spent 67 between two people.

Betty U.

Yelp
Omg this place is spectacular. The food is indescribably delicious. The wait staff friendly and attentive. Do yourself a favor and experience this one.
google avatar

Nancee N.

Yelp
Lovely presentation, flavor and at an appropriate price point. Dine in. We both had vegetarian options, chana was perfect and okra was surprisingly delicious g smoky.
google avatar

Aaron G.

Yelp
The food is great. They seemed a little understaffed and it took longer than expected to get our order.
google avatar

Brock K.

Yelp
Great new restaurant that apparently just opened 6 months ago . Many meat options yet has really good vegetarian entrees. We tried the lentil soup, goan shrimp, and veggie curry . Hard to believe, but this place is as good as some of my favorite Indian restaurants in London. Worth a try for sure...we will be back
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
We just had lunch here and everything was amazing! The service is outstanding, very polite and accommodating. Food was exceptional, some of the best we have had! Food was very tasty, fresh and authentic. Ambiance is very inviting and relaxed. We will definitely be back! Highly recommend this place!

Alia L.

Yelp
Expensive for what you get. The food was good. If I try it again, I'll try more spice.

H W.

Yelp
Truly great food! Weird counter pay set up but otherwise lovely. Best of the food type in the area.

Yelp
Excellent dinner! Really nice to have the Gorkha Palace team out here in the suburbs. We've been driving downtown for the food for the last decade. We ordered the Lamb Thali along with momo's and pakora for appetizers. (too much food!). The same excellent taste we've come to expect but with a much shorter drive and lots of parking. The location is modest, sandwiched between a hardware store and a liquor store. However, the interior is much larger than Gorkha Palace and a great spot to dine in or carry out.

L L.

Yelp
Enjoyed a late lunch at Thaliwala today. It was our 1st visit, but won't be our last. The service was stellar. I'm sad I didn't get the name of the wonderful person who came out to talk with us; his knowledge of the menu items was really helpful and his enthusiasm was contagious. My top pick: the Baingan Bhartha, a magical fusion of smoky eggplant, tomatoes, peas and onions. So, so good! A surprisingly close 2nd was the Pindi Chana. The mixture of garbanzo beans paired perfectly with the brightness of the chef's secret spices. We also had shrimp saag, which was great, and the Chicken Momo, a dumpling stuffed with seasoned chicken and veg. All in all, all the food was great, and the service was perfect. Spice levels are highly customizable on request, which was perfect for my family's mixed palates. Honestly, it's the kind of place you could comfortably go to and ask the nice guy (I am really sad I didn't get his name!) for recommendations and always leave the experience very happy. Highly, highly recommend!

Cassandra W.

Yelp
My husband and I ordered take out and loved the food! The flavor and spice were incredible. Everything was hot and fresh! We ordered the chicken coconut curry, channa saag, goan shrimp curry, and garlic naan. Excellent!

Kari B.

Yelp
Ordered takeout and everything was top notch! It was ready in a timely manner. The inside of the restaurant was clean and inviting. We got garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, and navarattan korma. We got the masala "mild" spice and the korma "'mild plus" and our toddler devoured both! We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I live in Chanhassen and we love Indian food! Up until recently we had to go to Eden Prairie for an average experience. It's Friday night so I ordered take out from Thaliwala which we had never tried! I'll admit I ordered too much, but I'm glad I did! For starters everything was fresh, hot and amazing! I arrived early for pickup. The placed smelled incredible, and was packed with Chanhassenites! The staff was super nice and offered me a drink while I waited. Once home my wife and I served up, sat down to the table and were very pleased! The garlic Naan was outstanding, the lentil soup was like nothing I'd ever had, it actually had a roasted flavor to it. I bought the chicken Momo which was again a ridiculously amazing dumpling. Our main courses were the Chana Saag and the Chicken Coconut both amazing! I know this review seems like I might benefit from this but I assure you I've never met the owners nor the staff. The food was incredible and I am very happy Thaliwala has opened in Chanhaapenin!

Kari W.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! The Thali's are such a fun way to eat. My kids love it as well. Highly recommend.

Carlos O.

Yelp
Food was good. Had chicken masala with plain basmati rice. Naan was extra $3 but very good. They charged an 18% service charge up front but probably would have tipped same amount. Will try again. Bill was $26 for one person.

Alisa K.

Yelp
V the service was amazing even when it came down to our water is being serviced. Very nice people. You can tell the ingredients are fresh, not frozen. Very comfortable setting and this is the best Indian stop shop in Chanhassen!

Vera T.

Yelp
Have had it to go twice now, and both experiences were excellent! Would highly recommend all of these - naan, samosas, pakora, chicken tikka masala, aloo bhindi, paalak paneer, mixed veggie curry. That's all I've tried but I'm sure the other items are just as good.
