"A nice break from the usual bro-y Murray Hill bars, this is a very solid, low-key craft beer bar that makes for a great place for a catch-up Happy Hour session." - katherine lewin, hillary reinsberg

We have been here a few times for group outings and I’ve always had a good experience. Most recently we came to say farewell to a friend and had a pretty large group of about 15-20. We made a reservation day of and they were able to accommodate us (it wasn’t really crowded anyway at 430 on a Tuesday). They had the tables set up for us in the back room and a large pitcher of water so we could keep refilling as needed. We got some happy hour drinks and appetizers(obviously some fries for me). Everything was good, the back is really nice and bright, and the staff was friendly.

Google
Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, unbelievably delicious chicken caesar wrap with kale and blistered tomatoes, and iced Irish coffee with homemade whipped cream. Couldn’t ask for more!

Google
Service was ok, it's definitely a pub you go to with others. The food was alright but not great. The pulled pork tasted like it was premade somewhere else, and the fries were a bit overdone. Don't feel the best afterwards.

Stopped in for beer and dinner. The Irish Chicken Curry was fantastic. The chicken was so soft and tender, and substituted the fries for a side salad. Highly recommend it and will come back.

Google
The Alvin is my go-to pub on the UES. Staff are wonderful, food is delicious, and it is a great place to watch a match, or to bring your family for a nice bite and pint. Trivia on Sundays in the back. Excellent for a party, whether it be a child's 3rd bday or your grandmother's 80th. Irish owned and operated, and the Guinness is one of the best in the area. Highly recommended!

Google
I literally love coming here it’s been a pleasure for the last 2 years. Same staff. I love how hard working they are and how they go above and beyond and how they don’t mind doing whatever weird drink mix you want. I just came here yearly with my coworkers but then began coming regularly. I love it. And it’s not super expensive in my opinion.

Google
I'm about to use the word great five times. The Alvin has a great atmosphere with outdoor seating both in front and in a back yard terrace, great cocktails, great craft beer selection, great cheeseburger, and the staff are very frien... uh... they're great.

Google
Cannot recommend the Alvin enough. The food and drinks are always excellent. Fantastic for parties too if you're looking for a venue, recently held my wife's 30th there and couldnt have asked for more. The staff are all lovely! They have the best Guinness & curry sauce in the city too!

Yelp
I decided to stop by for a casual dinner at The Alvin and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. The menu had a great variety of options, catering to all tastes, and everything we ordered was flavorful and cooked to perfection. The staff made us feel welcomed right from the start, always friendly and attentive, ensuring that we had everything we needed throughout the meal. One of the highlights of the evening was the outdoor seating area, which added a nice touch to the relaxed vibe of the restaurant. It's the perfect spot to enjoy a meal in a cozy, laid-back environment. I'll definitely be returning soon to try more of their offerings!

Yelp
I celebrated my birthday here and had an amazing time--drinks, food, service, and space--everything exceeded expectations for the UES! Drinks: they have a wide range of cocktails, beer, and whiskey. As a cocktail girlie, I enjoyed the roy rover which had citrus flavors. My partner enjoyed the oak leaf which was well balanced and smokey. Prices were very reasonable too!!! Food: The peppercorn poutine featured solid fries smothered in gravy with a very strong, peppery flavor; it had a good amount of cheese, but of course, I wish there was more. The fried pickles were nicely fried and hit the spot. Service: the servers and bartender were extremely nice and accommodating for our large party. The layout of the space was a bar in the front and a restaurant area in the back, as well as an outdoor patio that I did not get to explore. My party of 10-15 people were able to fit at their largest table comfortably. The lighting was pleasantly dim, but not too dim to make socializing difficult. Music was not too loud.

Christina S.

Yelp
I organized my high school reunion this past weekend, and our "after party" was Saturday afternoon at the Alvin Public House. There were a lot of us, and the staff accommodated several hours of food and drinks for around 20-25 people with different tabs. They saved half of the outdoor patio for us, which was sunny and cool on a hot day. They were nice to us, even though it had to be overwhelming! The drinks were strong. The food was delicious. Definitely try the wings!

William S.

Yelp
Went for dinner. The waitress greeted us as we entered and we found a booth in the back. We were the only two people in the dining area. We waited about fifteen minutes but no one came to serve us so we left. The waitress who had greeted us was standing just outside the door and said "I forgot all about you." Needless to say, we didn't feel like valued customers!

Yelp
The COVID-19 pandemic caused many good restaurants in my neighborhood to shut down. Among the ill-fated restaurants that could not survive the pandemic despite the good quality of their food and service was the Asian fusion restaurant 64st Garden Cafe. While I am sad about good restaurants being forced out of business, I am very happy that the real estate vacated by 64st Garden Cafe is now occupied by a very worthy establishment, the neighborhood pub The Alvin. Although I am not a drinker, I definitely enjoy the food here. The menu is rather extensive for a pub, and the food is delicious. Whatever I order, I always get the curry aioli with it; that's my all-purpose dip! Among the desserts, the sticky toffee pudding here is the best I've had in recent years. The service is very friendly and attentive. Molly and Connor are the best!

Michelle A.

Yelp
Consistently a great place to go to. My coworkers and I come here often after work and the staff is so accomodating. However large the group is, they always find a way to make us comfortable. We love their happy hour but they also have tasty food for a bar. Our favorites are the fried pickles, fried chicken sliders and the salmon bowl. They have a full bar, but you can't go wrong with any of their cocktails. My personal favorite is the Gold Rush. It's perfectly balanced and is a great sipping bourbon drink. Thank you to the staff for always being so welcoming to the staff at the ASC of Manhattan!

Alexandra K.

Yelp
Such a cute place! Quiet & full of locals, it was a great spot to stop in for a few drinks and game plan the rest of our day! The nachos were great & the drinks were prompt, our bartender was wonderful too!

Donna U.

Yelp
I wanted to try something I don't normally eat, so I went out of my comfort zone and had their chicken curry; I'm so glad I did. The dish was diced chicken and white rice with a flavorful brown sauce. It came with a side of fries which I enjoyed better than the rice but that didn't stop me from eating everything on my plate. This dish had so much food I ended up taking half of it home and had it for lunch the next day. Been here a few times before and had only apps but I'm glad I started coming for dinners also.

Yelp
Incredible scotch eggs and toffee cake. We stopped for a quick bite on our way and the drinks were amazing and the bites were delish. Staff is Irish so definitely order a Guinness to make them happy or order one of the many cocktails on the menu. They were all really good. We had about 6 items in the menu and will be going back for the others. Ambiance is perfect for a conversation! Highly recommend!

Alexa T.

Yelp
I came here on a Monday night for Mixtape Bingo with a friend. Bingo was a lot of fun. Bingo was in the back of the bar and the room was super cute. It had beer garden vibes. My friend ordered a chicken caesar wrap and she really enjoyed it! Service was also great - our waitress was attentive and nice.

Lizzy L.

Yelp
Nice UES spot for after work HH! Great pub vibes. Love that they have multiple covered outdoor areas in the front and back. Came with a larger group and the back patio was the perfect spot for us. I ordered the aperol spritz and the salmon BLT w/o bacon - both came promptly and were tasty. The sandwich came with fries as well which was a nice surprise. Staff seemed a little rushed but still attentive and checked in regularly. HH for drinks ends at 6:30 and they have daily food specials as well.

Jim K.

Yelp
The Alvin became my home away from home during the pandemic and remains so to this day! The staff are friendly and feel more like family! What sets The Alvin apart from any other Irish pub is that the food is outstanding, particularly all chicken dishes and the fish and chips! (Even if my favorite are the beef sliders!) The Alvin is great for after work drinks, with large groups, private parties, and even small children! :D

Susan L.

Yelp
Delicious pub food and draft beers! The Alvin burger made medium and with bacon tastes really good. The toasted bun is good also. It's a big enough size to share when you're not too hungry. The fries were crispy and not oily. The buffalo wings is very tasty, especially the white bleu cheese sauce. They have a really nice outdoor seating. Staff are friendly. Great place to grab a beer and some bar food.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Unfortunately I did not take any pictures of my food because it was devoured but this is the cutest little neighborhood pub I've ever seen. Ordering was a breeze and the service was excellent. I had the Alvin burger with onion rings inside which comes with a side of fries. I also ordered the sticky date toffee pudding for dessert. Everything was delicious! I can't wait to visit again and order something new from their menu. Would highly recommend dining here!

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Great spot for drinks, food not so much. I've been here 3 times and ordered both drinks and different food each time. I really wanted to love this place because it was so close to our apartment but the third time here for dinner we decided it would be our last. Drinks only spot! Service was terribly slow. Food that arrived was dry, tasteless and at times had to spit the food back out because it was stringy. For example I got a chicken Caesar wrap and it came with some breaded chicken pieces and kale. No cheese or dressing. Another time I got the fish and chips and the inside was just under cooked battered. My husband has gotten the chicken curry - he said it was plain but decent. He's also gotten the burger and said it was pretty good. Best bet here are the burgers I think. The ambiance was great thought and the whole place was warm and inviting. Hoping the food and service gets better because has a lot of good potential here.

Yelp
A very casual and nice local spot for a drink or lowkey night with friends Drinks are good as is the food. We stayed the more basic route and got a couple different sandwich type dishes Will definitely be back

Yelp
Food, service, experience, ambiance, atmosphere = ALL a glowing 5/5 star for Alvin Public House! Atmosphere/Ambiance | I came here on a rainy Thursday night with my party of 3 others and we sat in a booth in the back indoors - definitely COVID friendly and spaced out. They also have a really cool outdoor garden patio area extension in the back - I'd love to come back here to sit here in the summer! Food | We all got the Alvin Burger and it was honestly the best burger I had on the Upper East Side (and since COVID, can honestly say almost borderline all of Manhattan!) The fries, the meat of the burger itself, the bacon and the onion ring all made it a complete package - would definitely recommend (see photo!) Also appreciated the variety of beers - I got the Sam Adams seasonal (summer) and it was delicious! Service | Our waitress Maille (pronounced Molly!) was the most friendly waitress I've ever met since I've moved to NYC and even when she accidentally messed up an order in our group, I honestly forgot because she was so nice about it and hilarious. Service was outstanding because we had Maille for the night - thanks again! Overall, the food was superb, the service was even more superb - wish I could give more than 5 stars if I could! Great find in the UES and will definitely be returning!

Rachel C.

Yelp
Try the wraps and paninis! The food is good and the bar is cozy and question. A nice place for a quiet night. Service is consistent and reliable and the bartenders are friendly.

Meera P.

Yelp
The cutest neighborhood bar! I've been here so many times and have always had a wonderful experience. The servers/bartenders are great, lovely selection of beer on tap (they had Pumking the last time I went!!), and a cool cocktail menu. They offer brunch and dinner menus. I haven't tried brunch there yet, but have always had a decent dinner. As a vegetarian, I've tried the nachos (bomb, def a sharing dish though) and mac and cheese. I would love to try their sweet potato burger and salads with future visits. It also has a beautiful backyard/outdoor patio that is covered and decorated so nicely.

Kate N.

Yelp
WOW! Honestly best pub food i've had in a while. The poutine fries were absolutely delicious and cooked perfect. The fries are 12/10, literally SO GOOD I couldn't stop eating them. The smash burger was the best part though. Truly one of the best burgers I've ever had. There's so many places in NYC to try but I will 100000% be coming back for the food. It was 100000/10 !!!!!!!

Zack G.

Yelp
Causal Irish pub with a basic menu done well. I came with my cousin for dinner and we were not impressed by the service however. Apparently they had a big party inside, but it took us 45 min to get our food and they also got my cousin's order wrong. The food was fairly tasty though. We also tried the calamari 7.5

Miranda F.

Yelp
This place has a lot of potential and clearly has it's regulars. It's an Irish Pub, and I love that. The "Irish Pub" is a classic NY establishment and we've lost a lot of these in this particular neighborhood during the pandemic. It's the Upper East Side, we're simply not going to get a "cheap" meal, and the Alvin seems to understand that struggle. So, they've made this brunch deal that I think could really take off if it had more publicity, especially with UES millennials. For under 20 bucks you get a beautifully plated breakfast dish and a drink (Bloody Mary, Beer, or Mimosa). The quality of the ingredients are actually great. They are inventive and presenting classic Manhattan brunch dishes in new ways-- the "avocado toast" that I expected was actually a bed of arugula, beets, blue cheese, avocado (of course), and one piece of toast. It was delicious, indeed. But, perhaps could use more straightforward descriptions for the dishes. My husband loved his chicken sandwich--he loves everything. I digress, go get the brunch I really think it's an awesome deal and think they could use the support :)

Mary Jane R.

Yelp
We ate outdoors in the front of the restaurant in their temporary Covid set-up which was very comfortable and casual. We sat on a picnic table and were impressed with how well the waitress was able to manage all the parties both outdoors and in the bar. My husband and son both had the Alvin Burger and found them cooked just they way they like them (one medium and one medium rare.) I had the salmon burger which was just OK - didn't have too much flavor. The ambiance was good, and the service was good. Will be back again!

Yelp
Made our way over to this Irish restaurant/pub on a Tuesday evening for some after-work drinks and snacks. Not too many tables inside as most are reserved in advance. Thankfully they have some outdoor seating which comfortably sat the six of us. Since there are many enticing options to choose from, decided to split a bunch of stuff: Scotch Egg ($9) - soft boiled egg wrapped in minced sausage, then deep fried. Perfectly cooked though could have used more seasoning for flavor. Buffalo Wings ($13) - about 6 to a plate, meaty wings with just the right amount of sauce. Beer-Battered Cauliflower ($14) - tangy, breaded cauliflower bites served alongside blue cheese sauce. Best of the bunch; easy to eat. Chicken Sliders ($13) - three mini sandwiches of deep fried chicken patties, topped by slaw and aioli. Juicy meat and well balanced sauce. Service here started off slow, then picked up as the night went on. Had several drinks as well, as their draft list has some interesting items. Can get a bit expensive, so best to keep to a couple dishes and a drink.

Kyle C.

Yelp
Went for free trivia and ordered a drink only to be informed by the waitress that there was a $15 minimum per person -- AFTER WE HAD ALREADY ORDERED DRINKS!! If you're going to implement these rules, let the guests know ahead of time not halfway through the trivia game and after they've ordered!! Also, if you're going to make us put our outside food away, maybe post a sign at the door or something. PS Your beer tastes like soap.

Austin S.

Yelp
Came here as a group of 4 and were very impressed by the alvin burger! I got the onions rings as well which were served hot and super tasty. Server messed up my order but the food was so good it's still 5 stars (: i'll probably be back in a few months to try out the back patio.

Debbie B.

Yelp
Friendly, nice decor, spacious, great menu and consistently good food. Something for everyone. Great neighborhood vibe. Excellent service.

Morgan F.

Yelp
Newest favorite spot in the UES and will definitely make a habit of coming here more often. The food was delicious - it's your classic pub food but better. Sweet chili lime wings and crispy chicken sliders were my favorite. My boyfriend loved the buffalo chicken sandwich as well. I ordered the pineapple mule (YUM!) and my bf said the Guinness was extremely smooth. It's great that it is on a side street since it is not as busy with people walking by. We ate in the front but from pictures, the back garden looks nice too. Decor was really cute and welcoming! Staff was extremely friendly and service was great. Our waiter checked up on us many times and we never felt like we were waiting for him. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Audrey S.

Yelp
This is a new Pub in the neighborhood, everyone is super nice, the service is excellent. I had the fish and chips I couldn't believe how fresh and delicious it was. Great beers selections.

Jackson K.

Yelp
The Alvin is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood! The atmosphere is cozy and the staff make you feel like you're at home. They serve a creamy pint of Guinness that is absolutely one of the best pints in all of New York (They use a separate temperature-controlled kegerator just for their Guinness kegs). Their crispy buffalo chicken sandwich and chicken tenders are not to be missed. Recommend both with their Chili Aioli. Phenomenal service from Shane and co. All around a friendly neighborhood spot!

Arturo G.

Yelp
Great food, great drinks, great people and staff but even greater atmosphere even while following all the COVID guidelines Definitely visit again and recommend to everyone.

Christine M.

Yelp
The Alvin is a great place to grab a few drinks with friends. There is a variety of seating both indoors and outdoors. I love the ambiance here! They have a great music selection and a quiet bar area where you can have a conversation. I only came here for drinks, however, the food menu also looks good and I plan to return. Good draft beer selection, a tasty cocktail menu, and friendly bartenders. I love a good pub and I plan on coming back here. Highly recommend this place!

Bill C.

Yelp
After spending a day in Roosevelt Island took to the Tram to Alvin Public House and it was quite a gem. I like the outside seating and was shocked that there was court outside with charming items, aka Singer Machine. The hostess/waitstaff was Irish so it felt as if I were in Ireland. The food keep out quick and was very filling. We got chicken quesadillas, cheese nacho and tower of onions. The apps were more than enough but I got fish and chips which was bland and the Moscow mule lack alcohol.

Dan D.

Yelp
I have been coming here a lot lately since my wife is in MSK. This place is homie... reminds me of a proverbial Cheers! Lol. Good people, beer and food make this a must stop each time. I love love love their fried pickles!!!

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I've tried this neighborhood place only twice - and it's just average... Having lived in my neighborhood for 23 years, I had much higher hopes for The Alvin but unfortunately, won't be going back. Last week, I spent $30 on their Filet Mignon (Steak Frites on their menu - but advertised as Filet Mignon) The steak was flavorful but was incredibly chewy - SO not Filet Mignon! :( I would have sent it back, but I was exhausted from a 12 hour work day and was already set on never returning. My $30 would have been more well-spent at another establishment (like Houston's/Hillstone)

Tunaidi A.

Yelp
The burger is amazing. It's a must if you pay a visit. The Scottish egg is fun. There's plenty of seating at Alvin Public House -- outdoor, indoor, and patio. Service was a little lacking.

Ang M.

Yelp
I am first generation Irish. My parents have owned Irish pubs. I grew up sitting in many pubs either playing games or waiting for my family to finish the craic (irish for conversation). It's safe to say I have seen my fair share of Irish pubs in NYC and across the pond. This place nails down the Irish traditional pub feel but with a modern, updated twist. Taps are filled with great craft beers (some local) and an extensive bottle/can list (many local). Every single person I interacted with had a brogue (Irish accent) and that makes my little Irish heart smile. This place nailed it with the outdoor backyard-spacious with light music playing. Menu looked great but we were there for the whiskey and the cold beer. Slainte to an amazing new Irish pub!

Raphael P.

Yelp
Went here on a Thursday evening and had a great experience. Ordered the burger which comes with a side of fries. The burger was cooked excellently and had tons of flavor - they use a unique meat combo according to the menu. The kicker is the onion ring on the burger which was fresh out of the fryer and had a lot of crisp. We also got the onion ring tower and man those onion rings were piping hot and super crispy and so delicious. The waitress was extremely attentive and had a great sense of humor. Beer on tap was fresh. Awesome food and amazing onion rings. Definitely coming back to have some beers on that beautiful back patio. Did I mention the onion rings?

Ferd K.

Yelp
Great spot to get bar food with nice outdoor seating. They have an outdoor seating area built in the front but we opted for their outdoor seating in the back of the restaurant. Service was friendly and pretty fast. They have a good selection of food and drinks which makes us want to go back. We ordered nachos, beef sliders, chicken wrap, and scotch eggs. Everything was hot and tasted good. The nachos were layered nicely where you had sauce and cheese on every chip. The sliders were tender and the onion ring in it made it extra delicious. The wrap was good and healthy with just the right amount of dressing tossed In it. I didn't have the scotch eggs but my husband said they tasted fine and normal. Nothing to complain about. Will def go back to try their fried chicken sliders and their barley risotto.

Melissa O.

Yelp
I completely regret coming here because I am downright OBSESSED and live fairly far. This place is a step-up from your typical Irish bar (which holds a place in my heart). I was in the mood for wings and they are HARD to find in Manhattan esp. on the UES. I was seated in the outdoor back patio (the entire restaurant follows guidelines) and ordered myself a hot toddy, a plate of wings, and nachos. Everything was PERFECTION. The wings were crispy yet had a beautiful coating of buffalo sauce- enough to feed a party of two BUT I am no wimp and moved onto my nachos. Could the classic nachos use more cheese? Yes but I'd still recommend and order again. I added the shredded chicken and it was juicy as heck (a generous portion to boot). The hot toddy had the perfect whiskey ratio so I ordered two. The restaurant itself has fantastic vibes, a great set up, and is nicely decorated. Writing about this is making me not only hungry but sad that it will be a while until I go back. The menu tells you what is gluten free and I can safely say that I will be coming back and told everyone I know about The Alvin. TLDR: If you love wings and nachos GO HERE. If you want to have a chill night with great ambience and service GO HERE.

Adrian E.

Yelp
Good food and friendly bartenders. Nice seating area in the back. Solid place all around.

J B.

Yelp
Best pint in town! The staff is amazing! Super friendly, funny, and welcoming. Seems like a great place to work. Feels like family. Cute outdoor area in the back too. We will be back!

Greg W.

Yelp
I am biased. They serve the best pint of Guinness in Nyc. They call me Guinness Greg there. They serve a real Pour in a proper glass at the right temperature. Dam that's a good beer. The staff are brilliant. Always upbeat and know your name. It doesn't hurt that their food is good as well. Their burgers are good and they will make adjustments to your test with no complaints. They have been the North Star through the pandemic times and will always be a bright spot to the ues. Long live the Alvin. Thanks guys.

Caitlin K.

Yelp
The Alvin is my favorite local place to come for a friendly pint of Guinness. The staff are lovely, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere never disappoints. Any time I have friends visit, I make a point to take them here for a bite and a laugh. Tucked down tree lined 64th, it has a great outdoor seating area, and a back patio that is air conditioned. Opening in March of 2020 was not easy, and this neighborhood would not be the same without the Alvin!

Barbara D.

Yelp
We went on a Friday evening in June. The service was terrible and my husband's meat on his steak sandwich was raw and fatty. There was a party in the yard. Perhaps they were under staffed due to that. However, I won't be going back to find out. My first visit for brunch was good. Again, not returning. There are so many restaurants in NYC and I will not pay good money for bad food

P M.

Yelp
How have I not rated this place till now? Already been here a half dozen times. Their chicken sliders are incredible. Chicken and waffles are amazing. And I do love their bacon old fashion. Also great -the burger that's served between potato patties. Yum! But best of all (to me) the people are so lovely - friendly and helpful. Not to mention, kind to my 5-year-old. Bonus points for the cozy back patio.

Michael V.

Yelp
Just tried the Alvin after hearing that opened earlier in 2020. Definitely one of the better pubs in UES. We sat in the back garden because of COVID and the tables were properly spread out. The restaurant is very clean and the decor is nice, as is the back garden. The menu here is a similar to a regular gastropub but everything is made fresh and well. I had the crispy buffalo chicken sandwich and the chicken was very crispy and not dry at all. The fried onions were delicious and the bun was toasted perfectly. The side of fries was a generous portion and seasoned perfectly. Alvin has a solid beer and cocktail menu too. They have a nice selection of microbrews on tap. My GF and another person in my party had the Paper Plane which was a great cocktail. Overall, I found the Alvin Public House to be very pleasant. From the food and drinks, the service, and overall atmosphere, this is a welcome neighborhood addition. I will be returning for sure, especially during current COVID conditions as I felt very comfortable eating here.

Edward B.

Yelp
The Alvin opened just days before we went on lockdown. It was a godsend when places were able to reopen for takeaway. A group of nearly a dozen of us got Easter dinner to go and shared our holiday meal with each other via Zoom. The staff couldn't be nicer and the food is delicious. The tomato soup and the sliders are my favorite. If you live in the neighborhood you will always run into friends when you pop in. A great edition to the East 60s.
