What is a Michelin Star?

"Why do you take Stars away? We make our Guides for our readers so, if we feel the cooking at a restaurant is no longer at the same level that it was, then we would not re-award the Star the following year." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

The Angel

"Deep within the Yorkshire Dales sits The Angel, a stunning stone-built inn with 15C origins, which now has a modern Nordic style courtesy of polished concrete floors and light wood furnishings. Classic combinations are to the fore but are subtly modernised and refined, with dishes demonstrating a simplicity that allows every ingredient to shine. The exuberant service team enhance the experience, and the bedrooms – which are spread around the village – mix the classic and the contemporary." - Michelin Inspector

Chef Interview: Michael Wignall at The Angel Inn, Hetton

"Planned as a 25 cover restaurant named after Malham Cove, this across-the-road offshoot is set to deliver cooking on another level: much more sophisticated, with more elaborate combinations – very similar to what Michael Wignall was doing at The Latymer and Gidleigh Park." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

Michelin-Starred Restaurants run by Husband-and-Wife Teams

"Autumn 2018 saw experienced chef Michael Wignall’s return to Yorkshire – to take on the challenge of restoring the reputation of one of the UK’s most iconic inns. By his side – and sharing his vision – has been his wife, restaurant manager Johanna, whom he met whilst working at The Latymer at Pennyhill Park Hotel in Surrey, and married in 2015. Michael’s cooking is accomplished and full of flavour and he makes great use of the bounteous local larder, including game from the surrounding estates. He previously held Two Michelin Stars at The Latymer and subsequently at Gidleigh Park, so it was no surprise that, less than a year after the Wignalls took over this traditional 15C inn, it was awarded a Michelin Star – but the couple say that they have even more ambitious plans in place for the future." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

The rating is solely for the room and our experience; the food was stunning and some of the best I've eaten, however, the room, which I booked the top suite, was a real let down, nothing luxury about it, but at £700 a night it's cheap, so maybe that's why.||The real bad part was being able to hear the guests above us talking and banging about walking and opening draws etc, the absolute worst part was hearing the chap urinating into the toilet which i find absolutely vile and at that point we cut our stay and left after only 2 hours, we did get an e-mail next morning offering a full refund for the room which is the least they could do, again letting themselves down with poor customer service as a phonecall should have been made by management, in my business i insist on doing this.

We had a superb two night stay here. We had booked primarily to experience the tasting menus and weren’t disappointed. The food was outstanding and the service was friendly and attentive. Our room was luxurious with the most enormous and comfortable bed and a beautiful bathroom. Hetton is also a great location for walking and exploring the dales - and very handy for the Skipton Parkrun!

Excellent service from start to finish. Staff were very warm, welcoming and efficient. Sat in the bar and had an amazing cheeseboard with olives and nuts, walnuts bread and crackers. The cheeseboard came with a booklet explaining where they were made and what to expect flavour wise. We had cocktails and other alcoholic beverages and had a very lovely experience. My mother had got a voucher as a gift and wanted to take us. I would highly recommend. The decor is very tasteful and the fire was lit. We will definitely be back.

We had the tasting menu pre Christmas. Love the interior very cozy with the wood burning stove. Would have given it 5* but as a vegetarian the 7 courses lacked diversity of texture and flavor, I felt that this menu was curated by a meat eater. Only slightly disappointed. My dad had the meat and fish and said it was incredible.

The Angel at Hetton is an outstanding dining experience. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the service attentive without being intrusive, and the food is simply exceptional — beautifully presented and full of flavour. Every course feels thoughtfully crafted. A perfect place for a special meal and easily one of the best culinary spots in the area

Treated to a lovely 10 course dinner and night in a deluxe room for my birthday.||A lovely glass of English sparkling and a sweet treat on arrival set the tone!||Food lived up to expectations. It was a nice touch to have a nut free menu prepared in advance. Personal favourites were the snacks, scallops and waggu. ||Service was both relaxed and attentive. A great Cosmo post dinner, followed by a lovely freestanding bath! ||The breakfast I was not expecting to be how it was! But every element was delicious.

Our second stay, wonderful once again. The rooms in the main building are stylish and comfortable, with beautiful joinery, though severely lacking in surface areas so it’s challenging to put anything down except on the floor! However, one comes for the food and warmth of welcome, and neither disappoints. The 10-course menu comprises course after beautiful course of top ingredients prepared with great skill, imagination and a strong Japanese influence and service throughout is warm and professional. The bar area still attracts a local crowd who come to enjoy a drink and sometimes stay on for a superb meal. Breakfast is no less enjoyable, with familiar elements given a ‘fine dining’ feel. Michael Wignall is a modest man with huge skill who has honed his talent in the UK’s top kitchens; we love that he now has somewhere to offer his vision of good food and hospitality.

We had the most amazing meal here last Sunday! The service was professional and attentive the whole time we were there. We had drinks outside whilst our table was being prepared. Then taken into the dining area. It had a lovely laid back atmosphere with calming music in the background. All the waiting staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The tasting menu looked exciting and each course was served at a steady pace. Every plate was beautifully presented and it tasted as good as it looked!!

Yelp
The Angel at Hetton: North Yorkshire's Culinary Heaven Tucked away in the picturesque countryside of North Yorkshire, The Angel at Hetton is a true gem - a haven for food lovers and a heavenly retreat for those seeking a memorable dining experience. It's a place that feels like a reward for the journey, where the beauty of the landscape is rivaled only by the magic happening in the kitchen. The setting is quintessential Yorkshire charm, with the inn's historic stone exterior and rustic elegance blending harmoniously into the surrounding countryside. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, striking a perfect balance between relaxed comfort and understated sophistication. Whether you're a local or a visitor, you'll feel instantly at home. The menu is nothing short of extraordinary. Celebrated for its Michelin-starred cuisine, The Angel offers dishes that are as visually stunning as they are delicious. Every plate is a testament to the team's passion for showcasing seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients, prepared with care, creativity, and respect for the flavors of the region. From the first bite of a perfectly executed amuse-bouche to the last spoonful of a decadent dessert, every course tells a story. Their tasting menu is a journey in itself, offering a harmonious blend of textures and flavors that highlight the best of modern British cuisine. Dishes like Yorkshire lamb with wild garlic or North Sea fish with foraged herbs bring the surrounding landscape to life on your plate. For those who prefer à la carte, the options are equally impressive. The slow-cooked beef, served with seasonal vegetables, is a standout, while the desserts, such as the rhubarb tart or a perfectly balanced chocolate fondant, provide a sweet, memorable finale. Complementing the culinary excellence is a wine list that has been curated with as much care as the menu itself. From crisp whites to robust reds, there's something to pair with every dish, making the meal a full sensory experience. The service at The Angel is exceptional--attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable yet approachable. The staff's enthusiasm for the food and their genuine warmth elevates the dining experience to something truly special. While it might be a bit of a trek for most, the journey to The Angel at Hetton is part of the charm. The surrounding countryside, with its rolling hills and quaint villages, sets the stage for an experience that feels like a retreat from the everyday. Once you arrive, you're rewarded with food, ambiance, and hospitality that make every mile traveled worth it. The Angel isn't just a restaurant; it's a destination - a magical place where the best of Yorkshire's culinary and natural beauty come together. For those lucky enough to visit, it's a dining experience that lingers in the memory long after the last bite. Five stars and my highest recommendation.

Yelp
This place would have been a 4* but a few basic failures really let them down. I came here for a wedding, so I'm going to compartmentalise this into pub, meal, hotel and general wedding things. The pub: Excellent whiskey selection and some really lovely gins. They also had a good bunch of beers and were generally very accommodating. That said, they ran out of lemonade before a wedding, which is pretty poor. And Jaegermeister... The meal: The meal was served in the wine cave, which is beautiful. Generally the meal was excellent, the beef was cooked perfectly and the starter and dessert were good (nothing to write home about though). One thing I noticed was that there were no green vegetables (in a roast!?). Also, they didn't have anywhere near enough staff on, so they didn't take any drinks orders (the pub is over the road). They would have made a killing if they'd done that (and we would have been happier, I really fancied a gin and tonic...) The hotel side of things: The room was lovely, and at the wedding rates it was extremely cheap! Big, beautiful, comfortable, clean, couldn't ask for more. Breakfast was ok, if I'm honest I didn't like having to ask for juice, I was hungover, I wanted all the juice. Checking in was a touch annoying as they sat us down, then went to check other people in who turned up after us, and then checked us in last. Despite being in a rush! General wedding things: The wedding was beautiful. Definitely. But that was despite the many failings, things could have gone more smoothly if they'd had more staff. Like the drinks orders, having the cake ready (the groom had to prompt them) and the tardy check in. Also, they told us the bar closed at 12 and then closed at 1115, which obviously ruffled a few feathers!! Generally, this place is beautiful and I would feel recommend a meal here. But they need to hire more staff and be a lot more organised.

Yelp
Whilst this inn isn't in the highest category of hotel I have had many a fantastic meal here and can't recommend it enough. The food is absolutely superb and the wine list matches it superbly. Many high quality wines are available by the glass (on occasion Puligny Montrachet and Meursault). The service is outstanding and the whole place is very well run. One of the nice things is that the place feels like a cosy in with stone floors and wooden tables. There is no attempt at anything pretentious yet the cooking is sublime. It's great as a nice night away but equally good for Sunday lunch. NB parking in the village is not that great - it'sodd to come across double yellow lines in a remote village as this! I recently stayed here and the room we had was fantastic, as was the service to go with it. We wanted for nothing as the staff were so wlecoming and friendly. A brilliant place. The other thing to add si that they only add £13 to the cost of a bottle of wine in their wine list no matter what the cost is. This means the prices for serious quality wine is low, and the more you spend the better the value.

Yelp
I've only been here once (for a family meal in the run up to Christmas) but it was fab!! The food was wonderful with lots of little extras that you don't get elsewhere. The staff were friendly whilst also being very professional. It's also in a beautiful location - the countryside nearby is wonderful. Definitely visit here if you want a special meal - it isn't cheap but it isn't meant to be!

Yelp
I found the Angel Inn to be a very pleasant spot. I arrived on an unusually sunny day in Yorkshire so soaked up some rays on the outdoor terrace with a pint of Timothy Taylor whilst the others drank some tasty champagne. The service is that of a posh restaurant with well trained staff (one even managed to pick up about ten plates in one trip, which was astounding). I had fish to start and for a main which I would recommend. The fish was cooked perfectly and I didn't rely on the side veg which was a little overcooked. For dessert I chose something unusual, olive oil chocolate mousse, which I must admit was not wholly a success. Stick to the classics when it comes to pud as they're done very well.

Yelp
There is not much to fault with this wonderful country pub. Great atmosphere, sublime food, especially the Fish on Fridays. Wonderful choice of wines and beers. This is not cheap but you get what you pay for and you DO get what you pay for here. Sublime food, outstanding service with lovely little touches to make you feel special. Lovely to sit outside in the summer, with a real village feel to it. The only fault sometimes is the parking .There is not much of it and with a pub this popular there is sometimes a bit of a walk!!

Yelp
Little Moneybags. Parcels of fish in a lobster sauce- Look no further on the starters menu- they're delicious! Fish here is superb, as is the sunday roast (which is very reasonable if you book the set menu) Dessert is also good, i particularly liked the sticky toffee pudding. Service in the restaurant is excellent, however i dislike the way that some of the staff treat you if you're just dining in the bar (even if its because the restaurant is full, not because you are trying to be cheap!)

Yelp
A warm welcome, impeccable but relaxing service and food that's truly memorable (for all the right reasons). The restaurant menu was top-class, with plenty of variety and surprise, and all of us were delighted with our choices. I'll definitely go back when I'm next in the area.
