The Art School

"Bright red chairs contrast with crisp white tablecloths at this elegant restaurant which is flooded with light. The experienced local chef carefully prepares a bewildering array of ambitious modern dishes full of colour and contrasts; choose a dessert containing honey from the local hives." - Michelin Inspector

Restaurants Serving Afternoon Tea

"As the name suggests, The Art School brings an array of creative, modern British menus to Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter. Set within a restored Victorian building, the sky-lit dining room is flooded with natural light, and striking scarlet chairs are offset by crisply lain tables. Carefully sourced ingredients from a fleet of named, trusted suppliers make up The Art School’s afternoon tea." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

I’m lucky to say I’ve Lost count of how many visits we’ve made to this very special place. Every single time we visit EVERYTHING is 10/10. The food is divine and the staff make each visit so wonderful and memorable for us and it makes us want to visit time and time again. There is no other place in this city that will ever beat the dining experience of the art school. The food is not only delicious but each plate is a work of art lovingly made and delivered by some incredibly talented and friendly staff, it was lovely to see some familiar faces and had the pleasure of meeting some of the new members of the team last night, all who made our visit wonderful once again, thank you for a lovely time, as always ❤️

In Liverpool to attend a concert and wanted a great pre-theatre meal. The Art School Restaurant offer an exciting Prix Fixe menu for £55 which looked worth trying, especially as menu options looked very appealing, and decided to go for it. The meal certainly didn’t disappoint and had an excellent experience at this restaurant. Everything ordered at my table was extremely good. We were given a delicious velouté as an amuse bouche to start the meal and we went for the cheese soufflé and a venison tartare for starters. For mains we had the guinea fowl and the cod loin. We ended the meal with a “trio” of signature desserts. Everything without exception was delicious and would certainly go back again to try either their larger Tasting (£125) or Excellence (£95) menus. My only gripe was that, although delicious, my cod loin dish was far too small for a main dish. If I’d hazard a guess, the weight of the cod served was probably around 100g, which really isn’t acceptable as a main. The service at the restaurant is courteous and professional, however the atmosphere, decor and interiors are a little too bland for my taste. With that said, I’d still go back in a heartbeat for the quality of cooking on offer.

We were a party of 6, celebrating an 80th birthday. Our menus had been printed with Happy 80th Birthday on them and a little birthday treat at the end of the meal, which was a lovely touch. We did the tasting menu and wine pairing. The food was outstanding, and the wines were a perfect match. We have dined in many places doing tasting menus, and The Art School has by far been the best. The staff were all very attentive and friendly. We wouldn't hesitate to return and we would highly recommend this gorgeous restaurant.

Hosted a celebratory dinner in the stunning Moriarty Room for a group of 11. I was blown away by the professionalism, quality of service and exceptional menu from start to finish. The events coordinator Maria was incredibly thorough during the planning stages of the event which ensured seamless execution. The food was out of this world with a wine list to match but what impressed me most was the amazing service. Friendly knowledgeable staff stewarded the event with finesse and excellence on all fronts. Unfortunately I am leaving Liverpool soon but will definitely be back when I'm visiting family in the area.

I have just been lucky enough to visit the restaurant for my birthday yesterday. The staff were professional and friendly, and they really made you feel welcome. They had a good knowledge of the restaurant and the food and wine. They really made it a special evening for me, and I will definitely be back again. If anyone from the restaurant reads this, I thank you again for making my evening special. The restaurant it's self was a nice setting with some simple touches to personal it. I tried some of their signatures cocktails, and they were good. They were to me also around the average price to what you pay in most bars but a better quality than a lot of bars. Good quality alcohol and mixers used. We got advice on the wine, and they showed they had good knowledge of their wines. The food was delicious, and I could not fault it. We only did the 3 course meal as we didn't want to end up in a food coma as we were going out drinking after the visit to the restaurant. Very positive experience, and I will do my best to get back there at some point again if I visit Liverpool again.

Google
Wonderful food and very friendly staff. Appetizers and mains were most appreciated around the table. The decor was very interesting, with the art pieces and the umbrellas hanging from the ceiling. They were mindful of dietary restrictions. The sommelier had very nice recommendations that paired well with the food, also within the wine by the glass section.

Yelp
While the food was good for the most part, with beautiful presentation and local ingredients, and the venue itself beautiful, a subpar service ruined the experience this evening. One should not have to ask for more water three times during a service, nor wait 20 minutes staring at empty dessert plates before being able to ask for a cheque. I've had more attentive service at a texmex in Brooklyn. We are in Liverpool from New York, and I was looking for a special way to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary this evening at The Art School. Typically, after sharing news of a special occasion, a fine dining restaurant will do something small, personal, to indicate the occasion. For many, this is a small extra course. The Art School staff didn't even acknowledge verbally it with a "congratulations". One last point: in fine dining, it is the little things that matter. Turning over our menu to find a pre-theatre prix-fixe menu didn't set the right tone. All in all, an unfortunately disappointing experience.

Yelp
Took my wife (and kids) for her birthday and lived up to the hype. Fantastic restaurant that could easily be a top restaurant in London or NY. The service is friendly, not arrogant but knowledgeable and truly wants to make the experience great. The meal starts with some canopies and champagne (they offered juice or mocktails to our kids). The canopies were quite nice, I dislike mushrooms but a mushroom macaron was fantastic as was a black pudding canopie. The next amuse bouche was a cold pea soup with creme fraiche. I normally don't like cold soup but this was fantastic, even my picky daughter asked if she could lick the cup. It tasted like a cross between mushy peas and split pea soup. My starter was wood pigeon with foie gras. The foie gras was great, nice portion of pigeon though I found it a tad gamey (maybe that is how wood pigeon is). It was beautifully presented but probably would go with a different starter. My main was perfect, the fish of the day, a John Dory. It was crisp yet tender and moist, prepared wonderfully. Everything on the plate was just perfecct. We then opted for the cheese, which was also great. Unlike France, here you select 5 cheeses. As one, I picked a cheddar for my daughter to try. It turned into my favorite, the best cheddar I have ever had. It was also accompanied with a nice glass of port. Two small pet peeves, but nothing to distract from the five star review. Early in the meal, I mentioned to one of the servers that it was my wife's birthday and it would be nice if they put a little message on the dessert plate (I saw it at an accompanying table). That fell through the cracks. Also, we ordered the cheese expecting to pay a supplement and still get to try one of their beautiful desserts. They never asked for our dessert order and instead gave it as a replacement (and did not charge the supplement). We were probably better off, more than enough food, but we did want the full experience. Finally, we saw beautiful pettite fours and chocolates served to other tables. I believe it accompanied after dinner coffee but we are not coffee drinkers. Would have loved the option to order these without the coffee (especially for the kids) but realistically normally in this calibre restaurant they accompany the check. All very minor peeves to what was a wonderful experience and highly recommended.

Yelp
The entire experience of dining here was nothing short of exquisite. The best best vegan food I've ever experienced, and I say experienced rather than tasted because this was a gastronomic and dining experience, not merely "a meal". Everything was balanced to perfection, every course was a gourmet explosion of tastes that journeyed across your palette with well defined start, middle and finish. The service was just great, and I finished the evening with the best espresso I've had in and English speaking country. Book it, book it now, and dress nice. This place is the best.

Yelp
The Art School is tucked away but easy to find, generously placed within striking distance of Hope Street, Liverpool's premier hub for the artisans. Firstly, the bar is stunning, etched into the bay window space of a Georgian facade forming a perfect circle between barman and fireplace, the window has gone and instead you stride out of the bar, up a Palladial ramp (if such things exist) into the white space. The white space is dramatic, it feels very posh, the sort of room unkempt victorian school children might peer through longingly whilst the other-side tear into the lobster tail. The white void is for dining and it certainly feels that way, I imagined dining and not just eating, I've tired of eateries and I'm impressed to see Liverpool heave up this timely reminder of dining. The food is successful and you will be starkly reminded that it is, the chef or his/her employer has strewn around enough ceramic plates and award 'shields' that if the kitchen porter called in sick you could eat from the prizes. Mains were quite good, I felt a tad disappointed in my chicken, but then I saw a cup of chef victory fastened firmly to the wall and reminded myself that my Luddite taste organs were probably under-firing. The staff were excellent and there were many of them, they centred from all over Liverpool/the world and entertained our strange whims (a sudden interest in gin emerged from one of my friends, exotic bottles were wheeled out with explanation). The February sun shone through the glassy top of this old potters yard well into our pudding and coffee as we soaked up the last of the Sangiovese (at £26 a bottle). It's a place to impress visiting friends on a Saturday Lunchtime. Roaming onto the streets at three o'clock we felt well sated, excitable and a little bit grander than when we arrived.

Yelp
I went to the Art School with my Husband and 4 others the food was fabulous and the service was excellent. I wasn't aware of this restaurant but will return and recommend to family and friends.
