15 of the Most Romantic Restaurants in D.C. | Eater DC

"Tucked onto a sprawling green landscape of softly rolling hills and blooming flowers, this historic Virginia wine country restaurant and inn is as charming as it is romantic. On a pretty day, book a table on the outdoor patio. On a cooler day, dip a spoon into the winter truffle risotto topped with shaved truffles and egg yolk." - Tierney Plumb

We have visited The Ashby Inn many times, and it never disappoints! The rooms are cozy, comforting, and welcoming. The staff are exceptionally friendly and personable. The grounds are quiet and peaceful. It is a short drive to many things to do: the Virginia State Arboretum, Middleburg, and Winchester among them. We have already booked our next stay! Highly recommended if you are looking for a "peaceful retreat" where you will be well treated and will experience exceptional dining.

This was our second time visiting the Ashby and it was a disappointment. The concierge was lovely and helpful and the rooms were still in good shape. This review mostly focuses on the restaurant, which has unfortunately gone downhill considerably since we were last here, both in terms of food and service. This place is a little high on it's own supply and charging prices that are not reflected in the quality of the food or service. The food was fine, but the servings were comically small for the quality and price presented. The menu was uninspired and unadventurous. The service was terrible - we were rushed out of there in under an hour. We didn't get our wine until after our amuse-bouche and appetizers had come, the sommelier for some reason brought out our main courses and had no idea what he was serving us, and our server never offered us the after-dinner drinks or even the option of a coffee with our desserts. The server who brought us the amuse-bouche didn't know what it was and didn't pronounce it correctly. Finally, our sommelier was so rude and off-putting. We are not big drinkers and opted for a half bottle, which was still quite pricey. When he (finally) brought out a different half bottle (the one we wanted wasn't available), he went on and on about what a good discount bottle it was, the good value for the price, etc. in a tone that made us feel embarrassed and as if we were being cheap on this very expensive meal. The whole thing was off-putting and disappointing. To cap it all off, at breakfast they brought out included something that I am allergic to, after I had told the concierge after he asked for our allergies. All in all, the Ashby restaurant has lost it's way. It's not the Inn at Little Washington, but puts on airs as if it is. We will not go back until they take a serious look at their menu, prices, and service.

Google
Was are first time here, was a fun and unique experience. We were welcomed and brought to our room, which was very lovely. Bed was beautiful; pillows and the heat were my only complaints … We missed dinner but breakfast was top tier ; the server that morning was a real nice dude. He treated us well . We will soon be back for dinner and another lovely experience .

The Ashby Inn is a true hidden treasure. Every dish feels thoughtful and fresh, with flavors that surprise and delight. From the perfectly cooked meats to the vibrant, seasonal sides, everything tastes like it came straight from the farm to your plate. The setting is cozy and charming, and the staff makes you feel right at home. A perfect spot for anyone who appreciates creative, high-quality dining in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Google
Our second time staying at the Ashby and we really enjoyed the view from the Lafayette room in the schoolhouse. Great food as always. The Inn staff also recommended the nearby Arterra winery which was fabulous.

Google
Had brunch at the restaurant, the food was superb. Fresh complimentary biscuits were hot and perfect, the salmon tartar was fresh and had fantastic flavor. The wagyu burger was delicious and my filet mignon with egg was a wonder take on steak and eggs. Service was very friendly, all the food was above our expectations. Will be back!

Google
Had a 3 night stay for our 50th wedding anniversary! Absolutely loved our experience!!! The room was beautiful with a spectacular view! The staff… from the inn keeper to the restaurant staff, to the housekeepers were all so very friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. The food was amazing! This is by far one of the most enjoyable getaways we have shared! Look forward to our next stay!

Google
A very quaint impeccably maintained Inn with fantastic staff and great food in a very nice restaurant located in Paris, Virginia. Quiet, homey and close by to fantastic wineries, farms and stores. This is a great getaway place to sit and relax with snacks and drinks from the gift shop. David, the General Manager was extremely helpful and can set up tasting reservations at the local wineries. With easy access off of 50/17 the Inn is located in a beautiful part of mountains. We look forward to going back.

Yelp
Finally had the opportunity to visit Ashby Inn and the experience exceeded out expectation! We went for brunch on a beautiful Saturday and sat outside on their patio overlooking breath taking view! The service was excellent and all our dishes came out tasty and beautifully presented. The pictures were only a few shots of what I had but we also had their cheese platter and filet and eggs. We hope to be back again for their fixed menu and wine pairing. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Love the restaurant and food was great. Had the tasting menu and I was not disappointed. Unfortunately I posted individual pictures in Google and forgot to post in Yelp before deleting. Seared foie gras was on the menu. Loved it.

Yelp
My family came to Ashby Inn for a holiday meal. The view of the mountains was beautiful and very cozy on a cold and snowy winter day. The food was good but it was a little too salty for me. The dessert on the other hand was very good. It was like a pumpkin cheesecake with a mascarpone-like filling. The servers were very kind and accommodating and I recommend coming here for a special occasion.
google avatar

Tam G.

Yelp
Note to self, don't go for one the prix fixe holiday dinners, major let down and 575$ later, will be back in the spring for normal menu. Have worked in industry so should have know better. Desserts were frozen solid, tisk tisk Ashby. Foie gras was cold!

Yelp
Stephen's service was first rate. The food absolutely delicious. This restaurant was the ideal venue for celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary. My wife enjoyed the Crab Cakes Benedict with Potatoes and I the Filet Mignon with Egg, Spinach, and Potatoes. Each member of our family enjoyed their meals tremendously.

Yelp
We had a lovely stay at the Inn and really delicious food too! We stayed in the Lafayette room which was HUGE with a beautiful vaulted ceiling, balcony overlooking the grounds, king bed and nice sized bathroom. The bed was a little firmer than we like, but comfortable. We went to the restaurant for dinner and it didn't disappoint!! They started the meal with a delicious amuse bouche of lobster salad and a duck fat roll. Yum! Definitely get the cured salmon with goat cheese and lobster agnolotti for your first course. Both were elegantly plated and delicious. Unfortunately, the entrees weren't a knock out of the park. My beef Wellington's pasty was raw, but they did their best to fix it. Did I mention the excellent service? My husband's Dover sole was deboned table side. Dinner and a show! He wasn't a fan of the ratatouille side but the fish was cooked beautifully and had a yummy lemon butter sauce. We had the molten lava cake with salted caramel gelato for dessert. I was so full but made room!! The cake wasn't as molten as I would have liked but it was still very tasty. For breakfast we had eggs Benedict and the Ashby Inn breakfast. Also really good. We will be back!!

Yelp
Stopped by for brunch before visiting the wineries. The patio is lovely and overlooked the garden area. The food was delicious and the wine list was solid. I liked that the tasting menu was available during brunch but we didn't order it. Our waitress kept our water glasses full and gave excellent recommendations.

Yelp
Located in a town named Paris, Ashby Inn is worthy of a special trip. I recommend coming on a nice day take advantage of the outdoor seating and scenery. Of all the dishes, the appetizers and desserts really stood out. I enjoyed the beef tartare and gazpacho soup. I also tried the crab cake eggs benedict. The crab cake was made with all crab meat which was excellent. But I am not sure I would take a road trip for the eggs benedict. Overall, service was great and we had a relaxing lunch.

Yelp
The restaurant had a dark and romantic yet friendly and comforting atmosphere. We looked over the tasting menu and chose mostly different dishes from the options provided. We both ordered the lamb, which I found to be impeccable, and the wine pairings were thoughtful and tasty. The seafood was spectacular, but I felt the duck was a little undercooked. The port wine paired with dessert was spectacular, but the desserts themselves left much to be desired. Perhaps I'm not a fan of the deconstructed style. The staff was kind and considerate, allowing us to finish our dishes without rushing us. I was impressed by the unique features of the restaurant, such as being built in the basement and having reserved seating for special guests, with their names plated above certain seats.

Yelp
Yet another incredible meal at Ashby Inn. This time we were lucky enough to stay overnight at the School House. We cannot tell you how much we appreciate the team at Ashby Inn. David, Rusty, Stephen and Chef Brian always make the perfect evening meal and now we also experienced Marie's delicious breakfast too. Would recommend the Ashby experience to everyone!

Yelp
Been going to the restaurant here for years. But recently stayed at the inn for the first time. First, let's talk about the food. Dinner or brunch are great options here. Recommend sitting outside if the temps permit, as the views are amazing. The menu moves with the seasons and generally includes a mix of meat and fish dishes. We have found that they do amazing things with salmon, duck and steak in particular. Also any soup we have ever had there has been great. Desserts are next level good and the wine list is extensive, including great local options from Linden, Glen Manor and Boxwood. Menus can be found here https://www.ashbyinn.com/menu-reservations Service has always been great and the price point is reasonable given the quality and overall experience. Reservations are recommended via Open Table. Bottom line: if you want a high end experience or a romantic meal with the spouse this is the place to go. Now for the inn: there are six amazing rooms in the Main House that will make you feel like nobility. While the rooms have an old school look and feel, including a canopied four-poster bed in the room we stayed in, they still have wifi and a smart tv with streaming. A country breakfast is included. Details here https://www.ashbyinn.com/paris-va-bed-and-breakfast Price point is very reasonable given the quality of the rooms and experience, especially considering what you would pay for far less in DC itself. Reservations can be made via their website at https://secure.thinkreservations.com/ashbyinn/reservations?

Yelp
I had been wanting to try this place for quite awhile so we finally went to celebrate my birthday. The food WAS good, but the service was super disappointing for this caliber of restaurant. Our waitress was clearly frazzled and there seemed to be chaos in the whole place even though the patio was the only packed area ( where we were not located). We heard the chef have a major meltdown - screaming at the servers and then a big crash in the kitchen. The servers around our area were all openly complaining, which is never cool. When you're spending $400 for dinner, there are certain expectations for service and this wasn't it. Also, not one mention of it being my birthday.

Yelp
Last night, my husband and I went to The Ashby Inn Restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I was shocked that for a special celebration, we arrived at 5:45pm and we were back in our car heading home by 6:30pm. If you're looking for a good meal, the restaurant will not disappoint. However, what really impacted our experience was the service. The entire experience was so rushed and as my husband put it, it felt like the orchestra was missing its conductor. We were asked to provide all of our choices up front (we did the a la carte menu), which made sense for the kitchen, but the pacing was very off. Additionally, there was someone who appeared to be "in charge" in the room in which we were seated who was scolding his colleagues right in front of our table! It was so painful to watch that I reached out to one of the staff who was being scolded in front of us and let her know that she was doing a good job. Nobody should be treated like that, and doing so in front of customers felt so unprofessional. Needless to say, this was not the anniversary dinner we had hoped for, especially after having such a wonderful time a few years ago and driving 1.5 hours for what we had hoped would be another very memorable and positive experience. I can no longer recommend The Ashby to friends and we will likely not be returning.

Yelp
The Ashby Inn Wonderful rooms, and decent breakfast the next morning. Very quiet. Issue with the bed height, I am 6'0", and actually had trouble getting into the bed it was so high. No clue what a person of 5'2" would do The Ashby Restaurant Tasing menu, I realize it changes all the time. But the one we had, here in Aug. 2024 was wonderful. The service was great, meal took about 1:15 or longer, and we really enjoyed ourselves.

Yelp
It's hard to find a new way to say exceptional. Over multiple meals and too many bottles of wine, this place has nailed it; amazing menu, wonderful preparation, amazing service and venue. The place is manor house grand, which may be a bit drafty in the winter, but glorious the rest of the year!

Michael G.

Yelp
We dined at the restaurant on October 27th. The service was amazing; the food was fresh and delicious and the atmosphere was warm , inviting and private. We will definitely go there again. I highly recommend it if you haven't been. We wanted to also give a shout out to Stephen for making it extra special and memorable.

Yelp
I couldn't recommend the restaurant to anyone, service and sommelier were dismal. The food was what I expected from reviews and pictures but the experience was ruined by the waiter and sommelier, wines weren't up to par with what you would expect for the price, and everything was rushed. The Inn was lovely but there's not really anywhere else to eat so I wouldn't return.

Yelp
We visited the Ashby Inn on a whim on a Friday night driving from Fairfax hoping to see the Aurora. Unfortunately the experience left my husband and I a bit disappointed. I've dined all over the world, from 3 Michelin starred restaurants to local favourites, and the Ashby Inn is the most overrated and overpriced experienced I've had in quite some time. The food was dated in terms of fine dining. Perhaps this is the charm of this place, but the prices did not reflect the culinary skills, nor the service. We were not brought a wine list until we asked, and our glasses remained empty for much of the meal despite our bottle being kept on ice a few meters away. The caviar was a pittance, tuna tartare overly complicated to the point that the flavour of the fish was lost beneath the mountain of wontons and avocado. The steak royale was served tepid as if it'd been sitting for a while before it made its way to the table. My husband's pork was adequate but he called it 'uninspired for the price'. Throughout this all, the service was pretty much abysmal. I understand that it was a Friday night, but I have never had such inattentive servers at an establishment that touts itself as being what the Ashby Inn fancies itself to be. Maybe my expectations were too high, but for a $400+ meal I expect far better service, especially when DC is a much closer commute than driving out to Paris, VA. If you're looking for a romantic fine dining experience, skip this one. I cannot fathom how this keeps getting 5 star reviews, unless the patrons aren't aware that this place is an outdated relic and rely on the reputation it insists upon itself.

Don J.

Yelp
This is a mixed review focusing on the Inn experience and the food. The Inn is friendly and comfortable in a pastoral setting with great views. I posted one photo of the grounds where we had a glass of wine one night. I would rate the Inn a 5. The food experience was mixed. The breakfasts were tasteful, and the food was plentiful. Our server was excellent. I cannot say the same for the food served at dinner. I had Beef Wellington and my wife had Duck. While the presentation was excellent (see photos), we both felt the dishes lacked flavor and left disappointed with our meals. I must add, though, that our server was excellent. All in all, it was a pleasant stay. However, I would dine elsewhere for dinner next time.

Vicki A.

Yelp
Was delighted to enjoy a special Mother's Day lunch at Ashby Inn. The food, ambiance and service were all excellent. They do an amazing job with presentation and the sauces are especially wonderful. Wonderful restaurant and setting for special occasions!

Yelp
Very nice and professional service. Once in a lifetime experience worthy of the best food in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
The Chef's Tasting Menu was amazing. Wonderful wine pairings explained by the Sommelier. Lovely litte B&B nestled in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley area. The restaurant is part of the Inn. Very horse country centric.

Yelp
We have just completed a wonderful two night stay at Ashby Inn & Restaurant and wanted to highlight how amazing they are. Rusty, best described as concierge per excellence, provided a wonder reception experience and kept it up for the duration pf our stay. Stephen, the best sommelier-conversationalist-cullinarian we've ever experienced, made dinner absolutely perfect. Caleb, our server, was also perfect. That young man has become one of our favorites and we cannot wait to see him again soon. This place is an absolute gem!

Yelp
We would like to try Ashby Inn restaurant for a long time. We decided to come out today. OMG! All of our foods plates are so elegant and yummy. Thanks to all service providers over there! They made everything so smooth. What we really love about the place is it is so very peaceful and people were so nice. They serve the right amount of portions. Not too less and not too much to take home.

Yelp
If you are looking for a cozy place for an extravagant dinner, this is your place. When we looked them up on Yelp we, thought the means were $20-$30. But, we we got there they were all over $60. The food was one point and very elegant and lovely. Would be a great date night outing for dinner!

Yelp
Beautiful setting and super cute old cozy house. Reminds me of field and main but smaller. Food was incredible! I believe they change their menu seasonally. The bread was to die for - especially the cheesy duck fat bread with sun dried tomatoes. AMAZING! Some of the best bread I've ever had. It's baked fresh daily and I wish they were able to bring more out. The red pepper and tomato soup was perfect for a fall evening. So flavorful and creamy. The kale salad was sooo fresh! A good addition to a heavy meal. The steak strip loin was a little too rare for my taste but it was cooked to medium rare perfection. The potatoes dauphine they serve with the steak were cheesy, tender and so hot out of the oven. I loved the spinach risotto! Not too heavy and a HUGE serving size. Last the chocolate pie dessert was perfect. Delicious and not too overwhelmingly sweet. Left here full and very satisfied!

Yelp
Went for an early Valentines Dinner. I loved every second here. Service, ambience, and our meals were superb. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
We spent our anniversary here and it was incredible! The service was stellar and the food was so good! It was the perfect escape for a quiet night away from the kids. Will definitely return

Yelp
Nice food and service but prices way to high for quality of experience. Almost as high as Inn at little Washington Which is a Michelin 3 star restaurant. 4 of us dined and with tip nearly $500 per couple.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely a very good experience. Five of us went for brunch on Sunday . We had a separate room with excellent service. One of us was gluten free which they accommodated very nicely. Food was spectacular and well presented. An excellent experience.!!
google avatar

Deborah M.

Yelp
I would have given it a higher rating but the service wasn't as good this time. A couple of things: the manager seemed to be very attentive to certain tables while ignoring other guests. When your at your table waiting for service for 30 minutes while watching others that we're seated after you get the five star treatment it diminishes your experience. We went there Saturday evening (April 17th) to celebrate our birthdays. We've been there before and the service and food was spectacular. But not this time and that's a shame because I'm not sure that we're going to want to go back anytime soon

Yelp
Inn: The Inn is absolutely gorgeous! I stayed in the Fan Room (which is also the honeymoon suite, which I didn't know), which is bright and airy and has its own balcony. It is also located right above the restaurant, so coming and going was very easy with our own private entrance. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the grounds and gardens are absolutely beautiful. AND children under the age of 12 aren't allowed to stay at the Inn; bonus! I would stay here a million times over! Restaurant: The ambiance is very nice, especially if you are sitting outside. And the food is good. But not THAT good. And certainly not good enough to cost more than twice of any other place, even in DC. Our waiter was playful and a little flirty with me, which I may have been okay with at a dive bar, but at a fancy place like the Ashby, it was very unprofessional and off-putting. And even though breakfast is included with your stay, you essentially get the same limited menu each day. So, I highly recommend sleeping at the Ashby Inn, but don't eat there.
google avatar

art f.

Yelp
We've had a half-dozen meals here over the past 5 years but this one was the only disappointment. Talking to staff it was apparent that there had been major staff turnover in all facets of the Inn's operation. Our dinner was quite good but there were service issues you shouldn't expect when paying this much for a meal. Our omelettes at breakfast were questionable. We would have sent them back but needed to get home. And 1-ply TP? Really? Really! I wrote to the Inn but never heard any reply. Not even a perfunctory "thank you for sharing your opinion". Obviously they don't need my business and won't be getting it.
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Always a great place to eat for special occasions. Top notch food and great service. Not inexpensive but well worth the price. We travel 60 miles to get here even though there are great restaurants much closer to us. That says something right there.

Yelp
I brought my date here for a Birthday dinner. If I am being honest Ashby Inn was pretty disappointing. After a pretty great time at RDV Vineyards. Ashby was supposed to be the icing on the cake for our evening. The ambiance of Ashby is beautifully decorated with southern charm. The staff overall was pretty nice and attentive, which is why midway through my lackluster meal I just conceded that instead of sending things back and complaining, I'd just eat what was served and not come back. My biggest gripe is that I'm tired of pretty Instagram picturesque food, that is flavorless, bland and overambitious. The food was lovely looking, but the flavors told no stories, had no depth and rendered me very underwhelmed. The highlight might've just been the amuse-bouche and bread with honey butter, even that deserved maybe a sprinkle of salt for the butter. We ordered drinks; mine was the Thyme in the Bottle, my dates' drink I can't quite remember, but she sent it back. Both drinks were overly strong and if I was at a dive bar that would be fine, because my expectations would be lower and who doesn't enjoy boozy drinks. IT tasted like plain liquor and ice. However, super stiff drinks isn't always what customers are after, if I pay $15 for a cocktail(hers was $17) I expect to be blown away, I expect something that strays from the norm. So let's get to the food: Bay Scallop Ceviche: I was looking forward to this because blood orange and scallops are usually a match made in heaven. A month ago, I'd had the best Seared Scallops with Cara Cara Oranges in Phoenix and I was hoping this would remind me of that- it didn't. This ceviche was just bland. Not much acid, a lot of sweetness and no real distinct flavor. Everything was muddled and muted. Georges Mill Tomme Panna Cotta: This was a boring dish. It basically tasted like cottage cheese and nuts. Bacon Wrapped Monkfish: This was the only dish that was mildly satisfying. The fish was cooked well and it's wrapped in ham. Come to think of it, I've never eaten anything wrapped in ham or bacon I didn't like. Lamb Loin: Two baby pieces of under-seasoned lamb, actually one piece was seasoned better than the other. It was so little food on the plate, it almost felt like leftovers from a real meal. Beautiful looking plate, however. Dessert - Cotton Cake w/ Rhubarb: The cotton cake tasted okay, but the rhubarb pieces took away from the finesse of the dish. They were just kind of there. I don't know many people that like big chunks of rhubarb, because they can overwhelm the palette. A more pronounced sauce(there was a sauce), ice cream, etc would have been a better accompaniment to the cake. To sum it up, the decor and service is pretty good at Ashby. The plating is beautiful, but the flavors are not there. It's like meeting a super attractive person and realizing they have no depth. Also one of the biggest things that bothered me was that I made reservations and specified it was a birthday. The Ashby Inn literally made no special accommodations or gestures- this could've been as simple as a menu with the birthday person's name printed on it, two flutes of champagne upon arrival, or some special dessert or even comping the dessert we chose. Sadly there was nothing unique or memorable. Flavor before presentation, please...

Yelp
My wife and I spent two wonderful nights at the Ashby Inn. The Inn is warm and inviting with fireplaces in nearly every room. The cozy Inn reminded us of our home town in New England. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner in the restaurant which was as nice as we ever had. My wife's scallops were cooked to perfection and my NY Strip was both generous and tasty. It's obvious that Brandon, the GM, has high standards and wants his guests to have their high expectations met. We will return to the Ashby Inn on our next trip to the area.

Kimberly F.

Yelp
We stayed for two nights and had a fabulous time. The food here - OMG. They certainly know how to take care of guests! Service was impeccable and we can't say enough about the quality of the breakfast and dinner!!!

Yelp
Alas, a la carte, making this place ideal for true gourmet cuisine and affordable for this who do not want the multiple courses or really high price tag.

Yelp
While staying at the Salamander Resort we ventured 20 minutes down the road for dinner here, and don't regret the drive a bit. We went off the beaten path and ordered 8 of the 9 appetizers for our meal, and weren't disappointed. It was only the Caesar Salad we omitted after deciding the delta between a good and a great Caesar was only so much. What a great experience! From the Borscht and mushroom truffle bisque, to light and refreshing salads (beet and arugula, separately), and onward to the escargot and clams casino, finishing with a flourish--the 'french toast' foie gras and the mushroom strudel. One can't have a amazing dining experience without a excellent server, and that was the case last night. Our server Mistie and her team were attentive without being doting and offered excellent pairing suggestions--not an easy task with our octo-course meal! As memorable as it all was, nothing is perfect, right? Two things that would have turned a 4.8 star evening into the full Monte--first, the Manhattan with which the meal started was served nearly room temperature and with a maraschino. Unpleasant. Second, the pacing was off by quite a bit. This is a modest kitchen, we asked a lot of it, and it was Saturday night so even this can't be considered the ambience killer it sometimes can be. The room was lovely and the company divine, making the time pass more easily. And the chef did acknowledge the flow issues appropriately. But since I'm always a bit suspicious of any review that implies a near divine experience, it's worth pointing out the modest shortcomings. Can't wait to try the Inn itself to avoid the drive the next time. So glad we happened upon this little gem.

Yelp
Last night I attended an Australian wine pairing dinner at the Ashby Inn and had a wonderful experience! The wines were delectable and paired expertly with their respective courses. Misty, our server, kept our waters filled and place settings fresh, offering the perfect amount of time between courses to digest and discuss our thoughts on each pairing. Every plate was gorgeous, ineffably assembled by the chefs and informatively introduced to us by the evening's director, John. The representatives from the featured vineyard were incredibly knowledgeable of their craft, answering all our questions in depth, making it easy to feel like we were a part of their passion! In summation, if you are looking for a fantastic evening of scrumptious food, paired with phenomenal wines and a dash of education - then I highly recommend attending one of the Ashby's wine dinners!

Yelp
Went here last week for a birthday celebration since it's rated as one of the top restaurants in Virginia. All in all it was a wonderful experience! We sat on the patio during sunset and the view was great. Food was very good but there were a few missteps and with the prices that shouldn't happen hence the 4 start review. We opted for the chefs tasting menu. Unfortunately the require all parties to do the chefs tasting and there are no choices on it so everyone gets exactly the same thing. Himachi crudo to start and it was fantastic. Foie gras torchon followed and it was ok. Foie was great but the bread was slightly toasted and not freshly so causing it to have a somewhat stale taste and feel. Also had a jam to accompany with was great but there was Way to much and it overpowered the foie. Cashew crusted fish was perfection, period. Land chops were great BUT when placed the served described that dish and said it was garnished with a jam... it was a beet purée! Personal preference that I dislike beets but it wouldn't have taken a bite of lamb with beet sauce had I know. Pineapple tart for dessert was great. Wife did the wine paring which was nice BUT the champagne was served in a glass that wasn't chilled and it was poured almost 5 minutes before the accompanying dish so it wasn't cold. I had a cocktail from the bar and it was great but took over 10 minutes. Bill was $400 before tip. Expensive, very expensive but for the caliper of what was promised it would have been worth it. Unfortunately while they weren't huge for that prices I expect meal perfection without those mistakes

Yelp
Always an amazing experience. Food is fantastic and so are the views. Everything is farm to table and seasonal. Impeccable service. Took hubby here for his birthday brunch and he loved it.

Yelp
The Inn: quite lovely, quite old. Charming. But it lacks space for socializing and contemplation. There is only one public room for guests-it is small and also serves as the coffee bar. So if you like quit books for reading or conversation, you will not find them. But other than that nit, the Inn was charming and service quite satisfactory. The restaurant: For breakfast the restaurant only serves Inn residents at 8:30 and 9:30. The Eggs Benedict with spinach and salmon were to die for. Dinner is spectacular. An enormous wine list ranging from $45 to $300. The meal was near prefect. I enjoyed the risotto with corn and okra and it was wonderful. The view from the outside porch at sunset is lovely--be sure to time your meal for sunset if you can! Our servers were extremely professional and added to our enjoyment.

Yelp
Ashby Inn new menu is fine but not a fan of only choices being a 3 course meal. Prices rather expensive for not so special food. I had crab cake which was good but certainly not worth $77. The beef was ordinary for $78. The service had several issues, when asked about cocktail the server said oh I don't like fancy drinks I just like shots. that was not helpful. Also drinks we order were rather bland, Even the wine was incorrect. When meals arrived we didn't have right silverware. Had to ask several times for knives to cut steaks. At the end our doggie bag was missing. Server said oops guess it was given to another customer. How gross to be given someone else's food. To make up for that they give us an entire new filet to take home, which was great Overall I felt prices did not match quality of food. Don't think I would return.

Yelp
This restaurant was on a Food & Wine itinerary for VA Wine Country - http://www.fodors.com/weekend-getaways/washington-dc/virginia-wine-country/. LOCATION & PROPERTY Who wouldn't want to eat lunch in Paris!......Paris, Virginia that is. This charming B&B is nestled on a beautiful and scenic lot. The property is very nice that even in November, I opted to eat on the outside porch. They had heater lamps for warmth, which actually complimented the fall breeze. It was a very peaceful setting. SERVICE Excellent service! The staff was professional and personable. They definitely wanted to make sure all guests were accommodated. I was greeted by a friendly waitress with "Why, hello beautiful!". As a solo traveler, I was given two additional meals, without charge - one entree sample and a full dessert. Per the chef, "we treat our solo guests extra special". FOOD First and foremost, many people when they visit a restaurant rave about bread. Here at the Asby Inn, you rave about butter. Honey butter that is. WOW is what you feel when you place honey butter on their baked bread. What a nice touch to begin a meal. I ordered the 3 course lunch. This included: - Maryalnd Crabcakes atop Fried Tomatoes - Rabbit Stew - Apple Crisp topped with Vanilla Icecream The complimentary entree and dessert included: - Butternut Squash soup, with a side of goat cheese filling wrapped in watermelon radish (I think it was goat cheese) and a dessert (which was so good). - Fried Donuts with a side of Fudge There wasn't one thing that did not taste perfect. Unlike many restaurants, the food here has a perfect blend of ingredients so the food isn't too heavy or overwhelming. It also taste like home to an extent. For instance, the Crab cake appetizer was also paired with grapes. Which I initially found odd, but the sweetness from the grapes went very well with the dish without being overwhelming. The Rabbit Stew was seasoned with herbs but wasn't over powered by it (I did, however, add the rosemary garnish into it - but I really like rosemary). The Apple crisp wasn't over powered by sweet taste and was the right crispiness and the apples were tender. The only suggestion I would make would be to make the dessert smaller. It is something I probably would've shared. The other portions of the meals were perfect. Many restaurants portions are waaaayyy too huge. Or, if you go to some fine dining place, waaaayyyy too small. The complimentary meals were sooo good. I am unsure if they were regular menu items. If not, they need to be. They were so delicious! It was a very nice day to eat my meal with Apple Cider. They decided to let me a taste test the Apple Cider with a different set of spices (or different level of spices) after my first cup. The second cup was perfect. I liked the change. Again, they should make it a menu item. OVERALL I would definitely love to come back here again. It's a little bit of a hike from Frederick, MD but I would go if the occasion warranted it. I visited during my birthday weekend and decided to spend the weekend touring Virginia Wine Country. The service and charm of this restaurant were like adding sprinkles to my birthday cake!

Yelp
About a 2-2.5: The Ashby Inn & Restaurant is a combination of an inn and a restaurant, located in Paris, VA. The hubs and I came here for Sunday Brunch, and we were seated in an intimate section of the restaurant that had a lot of light and cute animal paintings. We tried one of their housemade cocktail juices, which seemed to be a combination of mango, grapefruit, pineapple, and banana - it came with a rind of orange and it was super tasty and refreshing! For our meals, we tried the Eggs Benedict, Martin's Beef Cap (with melted onions, sauce choron, and a couple of fried eggs, these were a little underwhelming in taste - the beef, which seemed like sliced tenderloin, was not flavorful, and there really wasn't much of a good sauce to complement the items; the side of the crisply fried potatoes were delicious, though!) and, the Johnny Cakes (cornmeal panckes with a side of argula salad, dressed in a bacon-ravigote dressing; the cornmeal pancakes had a nice sweetness to it, but were cooked too long - one side of each of the cakes were burnt black, so it was pretty unpleasant. The arugula salad was forgettable, but again, the side of the crisply fried potatoes were tasty). We had also ordered another dish (the Chicken en Croute), but that was never written down by our server T____T so, we never received it. We received complimentary crusty bread that came with a very sweet honey-type of a butter that was pretty tasty; I think they may be known for their sweeter entrees rather than savory ones. The restaurant itself is really cute, and I really like the al fresco dining (which probably would be perfect on a nice cool fall evening); also, the path leading to the restaurant overlooks the grounds and the luscious greenery of the Sky Meadows State Park nearby. Parking is available in their small lot at the rear of the restaurant. I'm glad I was able to try Ashby, and most likely will return only for their drinks! +set in a scenic area :D +focus on their housemade drinks and cocktails +underwhelming entrees T___T +pretty al fresco dining option +private lot in the rear of the restaurant

Yelp
This is a phenomenal wedding venue. The food is phenomenal. The General Manager and Innkeeper were attentive, accommodating and just nice people to work with. Our guests felt pampered by the servers and delicious food. They even have a beautiful 1800s chapel with stained glass windows and organ next door. Their suites have fireplaces with handcrafted mantles, big overstuffed chairs, even rocking chairs on our deck overlooking the gardens. Idyllic, relaxing experience before the wedding. They exceeded our expectations! Thank you, Amber, Brandon, and Chris!
