"The Athenian is a 10-seat wine bar from the same people behind The Immigrant, another wine bar in the East Village. Along with a pretty big list of affordable Greek wines by the glass, they serve Mediterranean small plates like spreads and pitas, meatballs, and grilled octopus." - Matt Tervooren

Small (only 13 seats) but delicious spot - their wines are delicious and the sommelier knows her stuff. We had the ricotta bruschetta, the pesto hummus, mushroom fourna and the shrimp, which were all delicious. We also had the baklava that was yum. All in all definitely would recommend.

really good appetizers for delivery. Tirokafteri, Eggplant Salad and Wild Mushroom Fourno were all great.

Great spot. Our group worked our way through several items on the menu and all delicious. Nicely designed space and wine list, friendly and knowledgeable service to add to the beautifully prepared food -- one in our party was greek and signed off completely : ) wonderful addition to the neighborhood and well worth checking out, it's an intimate space so make reservations and enjoy!

the Athenian is an intimate Greek tapas bar, squeezed into a quiet East Village block. charming spot for drinks + dinner. the Athenian's interior is a small, cozy space. the bar seats eight and there are another two seats at the front window. the interior is modern, yet has warm personal touches. the space is very clean and well maintained. there is a cool, relaxed vibe to it. definitely perfect for dates, date night, etc. keep in mind--there is a ~10 seat capacity...so medium groups will have issues getting seats. highly recommend making reservations. the menu is an assortment of small bites aka Greek-styled tapas. the bar offerings are Greek wines + beers. the tapas are easily shareable between two people. 4-5 tapas, total, should feed two people for dinner. the tiny kitchen here is serving up some quality dishes. highly recommend: 1) Thrace Meatballs: melt-in-your-mouth meatballs, soaking in a savory sauce with two pieces of toasted bread. 2) Eggplant Salad: roasted seasoned eggplant dip with warm pita slices. 3) Grilled Octopus: perfectly-cooked octopus in a sweet tomato sauce and olive oil. *had the saganaki is haloumi cheese in brandy is set aflame. it's a cool effect. i thought this dish was just okay. the brandy imparts too strong of an after-taste to the cheese. the cheese itself is soft and melty. there's a variety of curated Greek wines and beers. i really like the 56 Isles pilsner. it's a perfect beer for the tapas menu. the staff and service is kind and memorable. tip them well. drops mic cuz it's all Greek to me

I've never been here but this place sounds awesome!!!!! I'll rate 5 stars because I am a follower of Athena and I trust the reviews for sure here! I dunno what Chaodi Dai is talking about and why in Chinese? No offense but don't hide info like that it makes your review invalid and shady. I will make an attempt to stop by and will change my review if any pending how things go. But those that said this place is cute, IT DOES LOOK CUTE. I just hope its respectable to her grace Athena.

Food is fine but the place is so small you end stinking like the kitchen. Literally seating for 6 people in the entire establishment, which is a bar with a kitchen directly attached. All clothes will need to be washed right after your visit.

Fantastic little spot to add to an already amazing block. Clean layout but not pretentious and lots of chill vibes. Great wine. Get the octopus!
