"The Baring in Islington has the feel of a serious restaurant that just so happens to be in a polished pub space. The modern European menu spans cloud-like ricotta gnudi to crispy chips with garlic mayonnaise. Well-heeled families tend to fill the room in the day, especially for their great Sunday roast, but come night, the lights dim and things feel more intimate." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, sinead cranna
"This done-up pub is full of north London locals with a new-found passion for Crocs. It’s a lovely space in the day—particularly for a Sunday roast—but come evening it becomes altogether more intimate. The modern British food—crispy chips with aioli, barbecued meats, fish with tahini yoghurt, and the like—often remains on the comforting side of creative. And that feels just right." - jake missing, sinead cranna
"Ricotta Gnudi, Pumpkin Buttermilk & Girolles Gnudi is a seductive-sounding thing for obvious reasons, but few dishes have been quite as luscious and sultry as this plate from The Baring in Islington. Plump little cloud-like ricotta gnudi, a paddling pool of silken pumpkin buttermilk, earthy girolle mushrooms, a few radicchio leaves, and a dusting of parmesan dust on top. When this pub's menu might also feature words like ‘beef rib’ or ‘boullabaisse’, it’s easy to overlook a vegetarian option. And to anyone whose instinct is just that, we say more fool you. Or, rather, no gnudi for you." - daisy meager, jake missing, rianne shlebak, heidi lauth beasley
"Come Sunday, The Baring, a slick Islington pub and restaurant which leans more the latter, has a selection of its midweek favourites like the quail shish with garlic yoghurt. But you’d be making a mistake if you don’t get a roast. The plates of juicy chicken or strips of pink beef sirloin aren’t of the piled-high variety but are excellent. Plus the generously sized yorkshires are crispy, side bowls of golden roasties and greens ample, and jugs of gravy rich." - jake missing, sinead cranna, rianne shlebak, heidi lauth beasley
"Islington isn’t exactly wanting when it comes to restaurant-leaning pubs, but The Baring is proof that you can never have too much of a good thing. The done-up pub in De Beauvoir is a slick, poised, elegant space full of north London locals with a new-found passion for Crocs. It’s a lovely space in the day—particularly for a Sunday roast—but come evening it becomes altogether more intimate. The modern British food—crispy chips with aioli, barbecued meats, fish with tahini yoghurt, and the like—often remains on the comforting side of creative. And that feels just right." - jake missing
