"Found may have closed but you can still feast on Amy Morton’s fare at The Barn, a tribute to her father’s steakhouse empire. Located in a brick stable dating back to 1883, the restaurant offers a traditional fine dining experience with dry-aged steaks, crab cakes, and pecan streusel carrot cake. The covered garden seating provides a perfect place to enjoy the weather or even just watch the rain fall while sipping an Old Fashioned or Manhattan." - Samantha Nelson, Eater Staff

We had an amazing anniversary dinner last night at the Barn Steakhouse. The staff was attentive and made us feel welcomed right from the start. Our waiter Chris was excellent. The food and drinks were delicious! We’ll definitely be returning soon.

The Barn is our favorite restaurant in Evanston! Known for its fine-dining and moody atmosphere, their menu offers a wide variety of meat-centric dishes guaranteed to make your taste buds dance. Their wine selection is unique and fairly priced. We always have a memorable experience here.

Our first time here. It was excellent. We enjoyed the oysters on the half shell for an appetizer. My wife had the salmon and my daughter and I loved our filets. Perfectly cooked, with great flavor. Our server, Ellie I think, was very good and helpful with the menu. I would definitely come back and recommend!

It feels like visiting a grandmother's house in the countryside, yet the steak rivals the top 3 steakhouses in Manhattan. 🥩 The oysters are incredibly fresh and delicious. 🦪 Even the bread served before the meal is outstanding. 🍞

Oh my! What an appropriate name with “The Barn”! The nurturing and care put into the meal is much reflective of why barns are in existence. The steaks were out of this world, and I would be remiss if I didn’t say the crab hollandaise wasn’t the BEST I’ve ever had. Ben, our server, was super friendly and made great suggestions for the group. My only suggestion and/or non-perfect comment will regard dessert, and it’s this…with such great steaks and accouterments, you must work to deliver the same on desserts. Disappointed in carrot cake dryness and cheesecake lack luster. Overall it was a great meal and I would recommend HANDS DOWN!

The Barn Steak House truly lives up to its name, seamlessly transforming a barn into a tasteful and whimsical restaurant. From the moment I stepped inside, I was captivated by the delightful details that added a unique touch to the ambiance. The attention to detail was evident in every corner, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The bar drink menu, filled with playful and creative options, brought a sense of fun to the evening. The dinner menu, I was impressed by its simplicity and focus on honest, good food. The dishes showcased high-quality ingredients and were prepared with skill and precision. What truly sets The Barn Steak House apart is the outstanding service. The staff went above and beyond to ensure a memorable dining experience. Their attentiveness and friendliness made me feel like a welcomed guest in their own home. The genuine care and hospitality extended throughout the evening, elevating the overall enjoyment of the meal.

We had the best time celebrating our 5th anniversary... The food and service were absolutely amazing. I had a medium rare tomahawk that cooked to perfection. My wife had that amazing crab spaghetti and the spice on it was whoooo weeeee.. Cody our server was the best... Very attentive!!

We had such an interesting mix of an experience here. Came here on a Saturday night, with an early (5:30p) reservation. It was a busy night. The place is amazing - it has very high ceilings, brick walls and a great ambience. It is kind of hidden as you walk in from an alley, and the outside is very unassuming, but when you walk in you find a wonderfully designed, warm and welcoming dining hall. We were seated on the balcony which provided amazing views of the restaurant. We had Jacob welcoming us and filling our water glasses. Jacob was amazing - he had just the right amount of polite and professional friendliness and he was courteous and attentive. Then came our waiter, David. David ended up being the counterbalance to the lots of positives of The Barn. He wasn’t particularly polite and he was really not friendly to us. When I asked for a cocktail menu he basically yelled at me saying “if we have WHAT??”, and pointed to the menu in my hand “the cocktails are right there”. As he was cleaning up our plates from the table he rudely interrupted our conversation “can you pass me that knife?” - this might pass at Lou Malnatis but in a steakhouse the caliber of The Barn, I would respectfully expect a higher level of service. All throughout our dinner we felt as if we were a burden on his schedule that night. We did stay longer than most I’ll admit, so at some point a wonderful manager named Kathleen (?) came up to us and asked us to relocate to another table. She handled this so very professionally, she offered us dessert on the house for this slight inconvenience so we didn’t mind at all. And the desserts were absolutely fantastic. All in all, while we didn’t quite enjoy the service by David, everything else was lovely. I definitely recommend The Barn - the food was fantastic (our group tried the steak: the filet mignon was great, the calf liver was outstanding (it’s not often that I find a well prepared liver dish on the menu) and the swordfish - this was not as well loved as the other two. The desserts were fabulous - the cheesecake was light and airy, the chocolate cake rich and scrumptious, the carrot cake spicy and wonderful). The army navy cocktail was also really good. I’ll definitely be back here - maybe we will catch David in a better mood next time.

Yelp
Catching up on Yelp reviews in 2024. Last time, I visited was in February 2024 with my parents and it's one of my parent's favorite spots. Ambiance is quiet, dimly lit, and a super cool place. We didn't really care being seated by the entrance, but it ended up being pretty quiet as tables are kind of on top of each other. Me and my Dad split the oysters, which were ok. They were flavorful, but super small and didn't have much brine to them. I ordered the 8oz filet mignon and potatoes. The steak was very tender and juicy. The red wine sauce had amazing flavor. The steaks are really good and slightly cheaper than downtown Chicago; but they are still not cheap. Quality is very good and worth the price. It's just not a top 3 steak in Chicago as there are better ones downtown. Again they are still very good. Potatoes were very good! I've had Old Fashioned and I had an Espresso Martini last time I was there and I think their cocktails are very good! Service was fine. Our server, Cody, was extremely hard to hear as he was very soft spoken, but he was friendly and offered good service. I am definitely a fan of the The Barn as it's always a great meal and the ambiance is amazing! Prices are pricey with it being Evanston and there are better options in downtown Chicago, but the Barn is definitely worth a try if you are looking for a fancy dinner in Evanston!

Yelp
I came here with my bf for my birthday dinner. Typically restaurants comp dessert but that was never explained. They do not comp dessert, but will give a little taste of champagne and come out with a sparkler. Apple Maps definitely doesn't have the right location of the restaurant. It was a little difficult to find. But the interior of the restaurant is beautiful. Lightly muted lighting inside with beautifully detailed chandeliers and tableware. Our bill for food ended up being over $300 with tip. Appetizers were good but not the best. The cheese plate was a fun appetizer because you could make lots of different combinations of flavors with the fruit, nuts and honeycomb. The barn salad was refreshing with the mint but really lacked in toppings. The dry aged steak is one of the best steaks I've ever had. Very masterfully cooked and the meat quality was superb. It is incredibly expensive though. The Mac and cheese and Brussel sprout sides were fine but didn't wow me. The carrot cake was delicious and had lots of different textures with the fried carrots shavings as a topping. They order everything up front so they can pace your meal, which I appreciated. What made me drop stars was the service we received. Service was not to the quality we would have expected at a restaurant like this, especially with the price point of the food. The attitude felt cold and efficient but not personable at all throughout the dinner. With how much we spent at the restaurant, they did not make us feel like we were celebrating a special moment, but instead an inconvenience.

Yelp
For three people our bill before tip averaged $90. Don't forget to add the tip. The Barn resides in Evanston,Illinois in an over 100 year old building. It has a history which can read while you wait to order. We had two 16 oz. Ribeye steaks, a side of mushrooms, crab spaghetti entree for the wife and two French onion soups. Two cocktails were ordered as I decided to only have water. I thought the French onion soup was good but not the best I have had. My ribeye was prepared correctly and enjoyed but again not the best I have had. It came with potatoes. The service was fine and the restaurant was enjoyable to view. There is a parking lot just outside that's from the city so you pay at the nearby machine. This was a Sunday 5pm dinner so it wasn't crowded. The food was good but the prices are high. Steak prices are high with every restaurant I've been to recently. We enjoyed our dinners there. The liquor I thought was expensive but I haven't eaten in Evanston in years. This visit was in July 2024

Yelp
TLDR: Amazing food, great service, very cool atmosphere Food: We ordered french onion soup, zatar roasted chicken, filet, with sides of mac n cheese and brussels. Ordered filet rare and it was cooked perfectly. Honestly one of the best steaks i've had in a very long time and I eat steak a good amount. It absolutely melted. French onion was delicious - it was a lighter broth than usual which I was skeptical about but the flavor was fantastic. Brussels had some pesto sauce with it and it was awesome, i've never had brussels that way. Mac was good but nothing crazy. The chicken was amazing. Very juicy, tender, and flavorful. Not one to order chicken at a restaraunt but this was worth it. Everything else: Cocktails were good. Bar tenders knew what they were doing. Atmosphere was really cool. Great date night place or special occasion place. Service was great. Waitress didn't bug us but didn't disappear either. Summary: Everything was great. All around really good experience and I would highly recommend to anyone. Food exceeded my expectations and we will for sure be back.

Yelp
I agree with the others that the steak was great yet the accompanying sides and starters are second thoughts. My potatoes were like warm. My biggest complaint was the cost of the soft drinks with no refills. Might seem petty to some but a heads up would have been nice. I apologize if it is on the menu. The service was great, bar that. We sat outside and it was wonderful. No rush, no one walking by. Very relaxing.

Yelp
My sweetie brought me here for my bday dinner. The first time for both of us. The host at the door was very kind and took us to our table, a comfy booth upstairs. The ambiance was nice. We ordered a Black Manhattan and an an espresso martini, both delicious. For our meals we had the rib eye steak, half chicken, Brussel sprouts and Mac and cheese. All of it was delicious. Our waiter Ben brought me a sparkler and champagne for my bday It was a lovely time. Would recommend.

Yelp
Was excited to dine here with all the buzz and walked out a bit disappointed. It's got modern decor and is downright cozy-- people are on top of each other and it's an obstacle course to the WCs. The menu is steakhouse standard with a nice drink list. Our server was friendly enough to start and then disappeared for 15-20min, didn't check in after entrees, and we had to flag him down for the check. The food was below average for the prices and hype-- 1 salad choice and it was just ok. The tomahawk was ordered medium and came out still mooing. We were told that I comes with potatoes so didn't order a side of them. The portion was meager. Mind you, this was an $88 item. The Brussels sprouts were good and we enjoyed the wine and the company (3 couples).

Yelp
Saw this place on Instagram and wanted to give it a shot, as I wanted to I take my girlfriend here for our one year anniversary. As a big fan of NY strip steaks, I was very excited to try out one of the hottest steak restaurants in the suburbs. Once we got there, we immediately loved the rustic and fresh atmosphere of the restaurant. First, the cheese tray was tremendous. Super diverse selections of snacks for an appetizer (the brie was fire!). Once our steaks came they were perfectly cooked. I got the NY and my girlfriend got the filet, and they were phenomenal. Lastly, we ended the night with some of the most rich and delicious cheesecake we've both ever had in our lives. Seriously a great treat. Also Our server Nicholas was great! Top notch service with a great anniversary suprise :) While the Barn is a little on the pricier side, it will not leave you disappointed and is worth every dime. Perfect for the special occasion. As a Gibson's and Capital Grille fan, the Barn is (for sure) ahead of their game. 10/10

Yelp
The Barn is rightfully regarded as a top steakhouse in the Chicagoland area. My most recent visit in May was absolutely spectacular -- great drinks, amazing food, and attentive service all in a beautiful space. My favorites are the crab cakes (they jam pack them full of crab meat, but they are not crispy if that's how you prefer crab cakes), brussels sprouts (to die for), mac n cheese, and the best steak on the menu is the filet. All steaks come with smashed potatoes -- they're not the creamy, buttery mash you can order but they have some texture to them (I personally love them). Such a great restaurant and easily some of the best meals I've had in Evanston!

Anne M.

Yelp
We hosted a private lunch for 20 at the Barn on July 27. The space is intimate and warm, the food was outstanding, and the staff anticipated every need and was responsive before and during the event. We could not recommend the Barn more highly.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time!!! The food was absolutely amazing and came out at perfect times. Our waitress was amazing and so easy to talk too- she let us try wine samples before ordering as we explained we are not wine people lol. The ambiance is amazing as well. Super cute and historical vibes ( I love the history on the menus). Will be going back and would recommend this place to anyone

Yelp
Always a great experience for about 40% more than you should pay. We are long-term Evanston residents and visit The Barn once every year or so. For 4 people this evening we paid $900 for drinks, appetizers and dinner and two bottles of wine. The experience was great, the service was impeccable and the steaks were good (mine was a bit chewy but the rest were fine). I have been to the The Barn four or five times and always walked out feeling I had a great experience and paid probably 40% more than it was worth. If that's ok with you then The Barn is a great spot for a good meal in Evanston.

Yelp
Very unique space. Tied to Morton's steak, by Amy Morton, paying homage to her father Impeccable service, the filet was absolutely amazing. The crab spaghetti was outstanding and they have a fabulous bar!!! I would go back in a heartbeat !!!! 5+ Give her a try !!!!! Marvin Shotts Nashville TN

Yelp
With the price point and the seclusion that this steakhouse I was expecting to be blown away. Sadly my experience at The Barn was simply just ok. Nothing to write home about or boast to my friends. I came here with some family members that wanted to eat a fantastic steak dinner and it started out great. The table was set immaculately, the bread was great, the French onion soup was fantastic and not at all inundated with salt as one might have expected. We got the burrata and heirloom tomatoes and I will state that I believe that good tomatoes are incredibly hard to find, these tomatoes were fantastic and had a delightful flavor to them. Finally for the main meal we all got the dry aged ribeye, rare, with the potatoes, horseradish and got two sides of creamed spinach and mac and cheese. The sides were great but the star of the show, the steak, was somewhat lacking in my eyes. It had all the flavor of a properly aged steak but none of the tenderness and mouth feel. There were aspects of the steak in which the connective tissue and ligaments were too stringy and hard even for my knife to cut through. In my experience it means that the steak didn't have enough marbling or intramuscular fat but who knows. Sad to say that my other family members also thought the same way and flavor is only half of the steak experience. A melt in your mouth steak I think is more than adequate for such a price point and establishment. Sadly although all the accompaniments to the steak were well done, the main guest fell a bit flat. As the name implies, the Barn's steak tasted as if it came from an animal that worked exceedingly hard at its job as opposed to one that was set to pasture and graze casually for the rest of its days. Perhaps this is why all the vegetables tasted fantastic, due to all the hard work of the cows at the Barn.

Yelp
Beautiful ambiance and good service. Food was delicious and prepared well. Would go again in Evanston as the options for elevated dining are limited.

Yelp

Yelp
We just had the most delicious dinner at the Barn. We all ordered a prix fixe meal each selection was Absolutely delicious! The waitstaff is warm and professional . The play list set the atmosphere as the lighting invited a relaxed vibe . The Barn is Perfection . Thank you for hosting our lovely evening . Paula, Estelle & Sasha

Yelp
I can only speak to the food I ordered. (Note: I would avoid the charcuterie board since it looks like Whole Foods items pieced together) The Barn is a cute place tucked away inside the heart of Evanston. With the loss of the French bistro, Homestead, and so on, it's nice to have a non-fast food restaurant back in the scene. As someone who enjoys dining by myself after some long days or weeks, I appreciate being able to do so at my comfort and leisure by the bar area. The vintage looking upholstery (but not actually vintage is my guess) complements the overall vibe of the restaurant. Steak tartare - It's a little denser and heavier than the French style but closer to Korean steak tartare (yukhwe). It wasn't too heavily seasoned, so you can taste the meat rather than just a mouthful of seasoning! Loved pairing it with potato chips. Crab pasta/spaghetti - What a delight. There are real chunks of crab meat in the pasta and loads of it. The dish wasn't too heavy as it was balanced by the tartness from pickled(?) shallots, lightly panseared (?) garlic slices, and spice from the chili pepper flakes. Beautiful pasta. I would return here with my friends or family to eat a plateful, again. Drinks - Better to opt for the cocktails. Wine choices are limited and not my fave.

Robert P.

Yelp
I had a great experience at The Barn! The restaurant interior/design, the cuisine, and the service were all exceptional. It is very easy to find, just off the street, with street parking or a valet option available. I recommend the cocktails, which were well made, and they have an extensive list of tasty wines to pair with the meal. Appetizers were delicious with the burrata being my favorite. As for the entrées, I would recommend the bone-in ribeye with bearnaise. The staff were very helpful, and were willing to answer any questions about the menu choices. I have ate at a number of Chicago steak houses, and The Barn provides a wonderful dining experience. Feeling like I had been transported into downtown, I truly forgot I was in Evanston until I stepped back outside..

Yelp
The Barn is awesome! Thank you for coming to Evanston. The city has been missing a great steak far too long.

Ana W.

Yelp
Excellent food, beautiful presentation with attention to detail. Friendly and welcoming staff. Cozy atmosphere, intimate vibe upstairs, a little more lively downstairs. Brussel sprouts appetizer is delicious. Steak with truffle butter is incredible. Salmon is ok, not as good as the steak. Chocolate cake and carrot cake also so yummy. Highly recommend, would go back and recommend to friends & fam

Yelp
My husband & I had dinner at The Barn for New Year's Eve as we do every year. We visit The Barn frequently during the year as well. The Barn was very lively last night which felt great & was so great to see! We love the food at The Barn & our meals last night were excellent. It was the service that was odd and frustrating. Our waiter was polite and very accommodating. Our appetizers arrived very quickly. The young server, though, sort of shoved the appetizers in front of us as my husband and I were talking. Before my husband finished his appetizer, the server returned with three entrees. He placed two of the dishes in front of us, left the third entree on the table and walked away. My husband & I knew these weren't our entrees, but I guess we were stuck with them. My husband & I couldn't believe it because it was so ridiculous. Our waiter came by and saw what had happened, apologizing quickly. (He summoned the young server who gathered the plates, went to another table & again deposited them with the incorrect diners.). About a minute later, our entrees arrived. My husband still hadn't finished his appetizer & was not happy. All this happened 30-35 minutes after being seated. Also, we were nearly unsuccessful with getting water refills even though we were making sincere attempts to get the server's attention. It definitely felt like we were being rushed and ignored - something we've never experienced at The Barn. The waiter was apologetic & understanding, comping my husband's appetizer. Also, pay attention to the per-glass wine prices. We ordered two glasses of CabSav from their coravin (They did not offer a non-coravin Cab on their menu.). It lists two prices: 3 oz ($17) & 6 oz ($31). We're guessing it was our mistake that we didn't specify the serving size to the waiter. The waiter assumed we wanted 6 oz servings, so we ended up paying $62 for two glasses of hardly noteworthy wine. We won't do that again! We understand it was a busy night and that mistakes can happen. We'll definitely be back, though. Our many great experiences outweigh the disappointing time we had last night.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night dinner for my birthday celebration with parents. The experience was OK however I definitely expected more considering the price point. After reading multiple reviews both on yelp and Google I definitely expected more in terms of the vibe, service, menu and especially for a first timer. The food quality itself is incredible and the choices are quite unique requiring some guidance and or assistance especially if this is your first time. I tend to be a diner who asked a few questions not only for accommodations or options but also to understand what exactly their take on any particular menu item happens to be. Considering the competition within a 1 mile radius of downtown Evanston I think they were doing a fair job however this would not become my very first choice for dining. I believe during Covid they may have an outdoor space as well however I did visit here pre-Covid and this is a long overdue review. Parking in this area is quite challenging and also please keep in mind the actual street address of this restaurant location is quite misleading versus where it truly is located. I get that the decor and the scene are very appealing and they definitely did a great job of making unique yet stylish and eclectic.

Yelp
The cons: We arrived having first called to see if they had a table available. They did not, but said they would try to work us in or we could eat at the bar. We arrived and two seats came open at the bar. I went over and sat down only to be confronted by the bartender in a pretty hostile manner to please step back so they could clean the spot up. I agreed, stepped away and looked back to see him rolling his eyes and shaking his head in apparent disgust. I'm from the south and it just hit me as rude. But, that was the only negative. The Pros: the filet was one of the best steaks I've eaten in a while. Once he got the spot clean, the bartender was very accommodating. Maybe he was just having a bad day. My wife loved her extra dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. Over all 4.5 stars.

James P.

Yelp
Incredible experience. Every time. There are no strangers only friends who haven't met. That's The Barn. And the food is better than my grammar.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Great spot for a nice meal in Evanston. Came here for a couple of celebration dinners and enjoyed ourselves both times. The atmosphere is very nice, and the food is tasty. We made a reservation via Open Table and were seated promptly. Tip - They have a neat prix fixe menu from 5pm - 6pm every night or $35 that's a good value and includes salad, steak or salmon, and a dessert.

Mike D.

Yelp
Outstanding spot in an obscure location. Professional and well-trained staff know how to do their job, and the chef seems to have a lot on the ball. This one will not disappoint.

Andrea R.

Yelp
My husband and I have been enjoying patio dining for the past month during Covid-19. It's been fun to get out and about as safely as possible, but have to admit I've left most dinners wondering if takeout/delivery would have been the safer option. However, last night we dined at The Barn and I felt like they went above and beyond to take every precaution possible. We originally booked The Barn because the weather a few days ahead of time called for rain so I thought a restaurant with a tent would be our best bet. When we arrived we had our temperatures taken (personally I think this is silly, but if it makes everyone feel safer I'm all for it). We were also politely asked to put on our masks until we were seated - this I 100% approve of. Once seated in their tent we were greeted by a few friendly masked waitstaff who got us drinks (vodka martini for me, old fashioned for the hubby) and some delicious warm bread. The reusable menus from one table to the next at other dining establishments has been my main complaint so loved that the Barn they has paper menus w/ specials on one side and QR code on the other to access their everyday menu. It would probably be a bit difficult for those who aren't as tech savvy (my parents wouldn't be able to figure out the qr code), but I'm sure they'd easily assist if necessary. We ordered a few apps (salmon tartare special, caviar sandwich) and then split the surf and turf special. Everything was really delicious and probably one of my favorite meals since this covid craziness began. You can't end a favorite meal without dessert so we split the pecan carrot cake, which was kind of like a carrot cake meets pecan pie...a very good combo IMO. My husband who isn't usually a dessert lover was a big fan too. They do have a 90 minute limit for each table of 2, but that was plenty of time to enjoy a nice meal together...especially since we've been together 24/7 since March. Our early reservation meant we were finished before our kids went to bed, but this just left time to walk/drive around our favorite college campus. Go NU! Overall, it was a lovely meal and in the past 24 hours I've told several people that if they are ready for patio dining this is the place to do it.

Yelp
On August 10 we had a family reunion dinner in the private loft area of The Barn Steakhouse in Evanston. Our family lives in Europe and various parts of the US so meals together, when we can have them, are important events. The service was IMPECCABLE. Our primary service contact was Lenny G and he was assisted by Anna L. We were a diverse group including a wide range of ages from small children to a great grandmother. Therefore, we had plenty of special requests and particular dining needs. Lenny was 100% attentive and efficient. Anna and all others who we had briefer contact with at the Loft were smiling and helpful. Danielle D was always responsive and professional in planning the event - always returning calls and answering emails in a timely manner. Many thanks to all at The Barn Steakhouse! Nini H

Yelp
My husband and I both enjoyed our dining experience at The Barn immensely! From the time we walked through the door until we left, the staff made us feel so welcome. Our waiter, Cody was in the process of training a new waiter (Danielle) and the two of them were spectacular! They were very personable, funny, informative and attentive. The drinks and food were outstanding. We both had steak and were beyond happy with our choices! Both the Filet mignon and the strip were done to perfection! We were so hoping to have room for dessert, but that will have to wait until the next visit. The whole experience was beyond our expectations from the beautifully renovated century old barn to the perfectly chosen dinner music our dining experience could not have been more perfect. We would strongly recommend The Barn for a special date night, a family celebration, or when you just want to treat yourself to a delicious meal.

Yelp
We went for dinner on New Year's Eve and we also celebrate our anniversary then as well. We arrived very early however we were told we could take a seat in the bar and the host brought a drink menu right away while we waited for our 9:15pm reservation. We had the Hemingway and French 75 cocktails and they were absolutely delicious! When our table was ready we were brought over to a corner booth that was just perfect. Just enough to feel like we had some privacy but not too far out of the way to still enjoy the ambiance of this fabulous restaurant. The interior decor is stunning and every single staff member was polite and some even complimented our dinner jackets which was very nice. As far as the food, everything was top notch. We had the filet, the NY strip, both with the potatoes that come with it. They were cooked exactly as ordered. We added Brussel sprouts, Mac and cheese, and asparagus and when I tell you every side just added to the experience I mean it. To start I also had the French onion soup that was so yummy. We will definitely be back to this fantastic restaurant. Kellie was our server that night and she was so friendly and kind!! Thank you to The Barn for making our night very special for us. We will be back again!!

Fantastic space. Lovely ambience. Friendly service. Drinks good. But I came for the steak. Sadly it was very average. Ordered Bone in rib eye 16oz. I was looking forward to a succulent juicy medium rare steak. It was not succulent nor juicy nor medium rare. Kinda more like like a medium-well ny strip. At $66 not worth it. The accompanying potatoes, asparagus, and sauce were tasty. I'd come back. Just not for the steak.

Yelp
I'm thrilled i gave The Barn a chance. I admit i can be a snob about food and wasn't too interested in trying it. We had the most fantastic waiter, STEVE, who gave us the best recommendations and tips for how to eat the dishes. My husband and i got the Little Gem Salad and BURRATA to start and everything tasted delicious. For our Mains, i got the bone-in rib eye, medium rare, and it was cooked to perfection! My husband got the crab spaghetti and finished the entire dish. After, we got the sour cream cheesecake which we devoured and my husband got a couple of glasses of wine throughout dinner. We sat in the private booth in the upstairs and just enjoyed dinner from start to finish. I would come back in a heartbeat and recommend to everyone.

Yelp
The Barn is Amy Morton's newest entry into fine Evanston dining, and she's done a beautiful job. The restaurant is unique, in that it can be found in the "alley space" between Church and Davis streets. (don't worry...it's not a dark and scary alley, it's paved clean, and well lit)... in what was once a "Barn" (get it?), and stable for carriage horses back in the day (WAY back in the day). The dining room has been turned into a warm and intimate space, with booths and tables and a fantastic 2-story bar festooned with wonderful bottles of this and that... it's kinda fun to watch a waiter precariously climb the very tall ladder to go up and obtain a high-end (literally "high") bottle of this or that. And then there's the service and the food. Top-end to both. I've been several times, and while I'd love to give you a review of multiple offerings, it is a steak house, and I have always ordered the 8oz. filet. Always beautifully done, charred on the outside and pink on the inside (medium rare). I do mix things up on the sides... roasted asparagus, pesto Brussel sprouts My date has had the pan-seared salmon with honey-mustard glaze and dill yogurt. Not what I would get at a steak house, but beautifully done and very tasty. They have many very interesting house drinks. Their own take on classic cocktails... an espresso martini, a black Manhattan, doctor's orders (CBD-infused scotch with honey-lemon and ginger... very interesting). Service is top-notch, as we linger over dinner, and drinks they never once have rushed us, even though I'm sure they would have loved to turn over our table. Highly recommended for a special evening!

Yelp
One of the few restaurants where everything tasted good - even the bread. The sauce they use on the Brussels sprouts was outstanding. Only issue is their main entrance appears to be from a back alley.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday around 7pm. Service was great. We ordered the aged ribeye and and New York strip medium rare. Steaks were cooked perfectly and had a very tasty glaze on top. The bread was warm and delicious. Potatoes, cream, chard, and mushrooms were all very good.. no complaints here. Not a five star restaurant, but a great steakhouse.

Yelp
Good food - high quality and flavorful, and service. Pricy although it is worth it in my opinion.

Yelp
food was over rated for the cost dried out salmon, undercooked steaks the service was average. the place was so noisy that we could not have a conversation. it seemed like everyone was yelling at each other.

Yelp
I've lived around the corner from this restaurant for years and finally came in on Saturday night. I had the pan roasted salmon. Many people don't like to get anything other than steak at steak houses but this is an exception. The salmon was perfectly seared and had a delicious flavor profile throughout. I loved the smooth dill yogurt sauce with the crunchy cucumbers to complement the magnificent piece of fish. Whoever cooked this deserves a raise and promotion. I will be back again.

Yelp
Cool restaurant inside and out. The bison Bolognese and salmon were both wonderful. I highly recommend the Brussel sprout side dish as well as their unique Cobb salad. Our server and manager were terrific.

Yelp
Ate here and had an early reservation so ordered the price fix meal which was very small and ordered an extra plate of crab spaghetti which was dry and nothing special. The tiny slice of dessert was ridiculous as it was so tiny and we are not heavy eaters. To end it all a nine dollar cup of coffee did it for us. Will never return.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! My boyfriend and I went out to The Barn Steakhouse this past Friday night and everything was delicious! We had the steak tartare and burrata for appetizers and both were very good. I then had the pistachio crusted scallops and my boyfriend had the filet mignon au poivre. I would recommend both! The scallops were some of the best I have had. We also had the robuchon potatoes, very buttery with cheese melted on top. It was also very good however left us with no room for dessert! Lastly we were surprised with 2 glasses of champagne at the end!

Yelp
So we were in Evanston for the afternoon while my daughter was at Northwestern University. The place was a bit hidden. Not easy to find. Very small boutique steakhouse. Had a good menu. Very nice server and host. The bar had 9 seats. We sat within 25 minutes. Ordered steaks. 3 filets. I think the food was ok. I wasn't blown away with anything. My steak was not very good. It was thin and a bit fatty for a filet. The salads were ok. The decor was ok. So I think for a hometown steakhouse it may be just fine. I wouldn't go again. Especially when down town is 39 minutes away and some of the best steakhouses in the country.

Yelp
Well where do I start? Choose this restaurant as onus not been to it and it had good reviews. Total group of 7 people all looking forward to a great streak dinner . Well not so good and my review is based on me choosing the restaurant and paying the $720 tab. ( only 1 bottle of wine ) so most of the cost was for food. Appetizers were no big deal and nothing to brag about . Was looking forward to the caviar sandwich but could not try them because they were out . Dinners were all steaks and 1 burger 5 of us asked for Demi glaze on the side ( what "steak house"puts sauce on a good steak). You don't need to cover up quality meat with a sauce . Especially an aged piece of beef! 4 of us asked for sauce on the side and we'll mine arrives - Aged bone in rib eye - shows up with sauce . Sent it back for the new one to show up medium plus when it should have been medium rare . Sent it back and did not bother to order anything else. So they gave me $100 gift card to make up for the errors which is appreciated but really a place like this should be dead on for requests as well as cooking temperature. Will I try it again ... maybe . Go to Gibsons !

Yelp
Loved my experience at The Barn! Intimate setting - perfect for celebrating my boyfriend's birthday. The ambience is very unique - giving speakeasy vibes in an old, rustic barn. Great service and yummy food! Definitely a gem and worth the drive from downtown.

Yelp
I give our waitress 5 stars (I think her name was Maggie), atmosphere 5 and the food and drinks, 2 stars (that's being generous). My husband had two Casa Amigos on the rocks, they were definitely just one shot each, and it was $47 dollars. You could buy an entire bottle for that amount. It's ridiculous. My girlfriend and I both had specialty cocktails to start off with, and there was nothing special about either one of them. The bottle of wine was fine but ridiculously overpriced. So we had liver and onions, a New York strip, a bone in ribeye, and the crab pasta. We also had a very meager salad, burrata salad and some of the most disappointing onion soup I've ever tasted. And the waitress actually raved about it. I can get better onion soup at so many other places for a fraction of the cost. We hardly ate any of it, it was so tasteless. How do you make onion soup that's tasteless? The only good thing on the table was my New York strip. That's it. The bone in ribeye was so skinny and scrawny, it looked like a breakfast steak you would get at a diner. We were digging around could not find any crab in the crab pasta, and it just didn't have any flavor, it was kind of bland. The biggest disappointment was the liver and onions. They must have used so much liquid smoke, that's literally the only thing we could taste. You couldn't taste the actual liver, you couldn't taste the chunks of lardon, It was unbelievably disappointing. The desert was OK. I should've read the reviews before we went but it was an incredibly expensive meal and it was incredibly mediocre. Our bill was $444 not including tip. I expect outstanding food for that price and it was not, in the least, outstanding. They're lucky I'm giving them three stars.

Yelp
Good place, the interior is great atmosphere so obviously during Covid, you cant really experience it. We had to sit in a tent in the parking lot...I get it..but its not the best scenery. some plants, lights, or some decorations would help? The food is good and cocktails are always spot on.

Yelp
Absolutely over-the-top amazing great service delicious steaks size everything made to your perfection

Yelp
This charming restaurant is indeed in an old, two-story brick barn that was a Bordens Milk plant in the distant past. The space has been nicely remodeled while saving its charm. The Barn styles itself as a Chicago steakhouse, but there is a lot more on the menus, and none of us actually had steak. We really enjoyed the very generous ceviche appetizer. Another favorite is their famous caviar sandwich, which is also a generous serving, and the caviar was quite good for the price. As an entree I had the lamb chops, which were excellent. Four large chops were perfectly cooked, and served in a wonderfully flavorful sauce that conatined a hint of licorice. The is a Saturday special, so if lamb is your thing, that's the day to go. There's a fairly extensive wine list. Service was friendly and professional. Because of the brick walls, the space can get quite loud when busy, so it's best to go early. The upstairs seating in the loft is a little bit quieter.
