My husband and I are currently on a quest to play pub trivia in as many states as possible. (13 down, 37 to go.) So, since we're visiting Minneapolis, we decided to go on an excursion to South Dakota. We selected the Barrel House simply because they offer a trivia game on Tuesdays (at 7 pm) and serve food.
I wish this restaurant was located closer to us, because it would definitely be added to our weekly roster of trivia games. The game is good (DJ Trivia is the provider), the food is phenomenal, and the restaurant is even quite attractive, and has amazingly comfortable seats.
My husband and I both had 12" pizzas. He reports that the pad thai pizza was a little too spicy for him (then again, he also tries to order "zero" when asked for his preferred spice level on a scale of 1 to 10). I had the smokehouse pizza, which had bacon, brisket, and a couple of other smoked meats, with a drizzle of smoky, mildly tangy barbecue sauce, and a sprinkling of crispy onions. The crust was thin, chewy rather than crunchy (I prefer chewy; less abrasion on the inside of one's mouth), but nicely cooked throughout--not at all soggy in the middle despite the generous heaping of toppings.
Service was excellent; our server was obviously keeping an eye on my husband's water glass, which had to be refilled often. The table was cleared quickly when we were done eating--but the staff was also paying attention and accommodated what might have seemed odd requests, like to leave my husband's plate even though he had finished his pizza (I didn't even have to explain that he likes to eat my crusts). So...kudos for customer-centric service.
The manager, Laura, went above and beyond for us when we unexpectedly won the game, and allowed us to use the prize that night, despite some complicated paperwork. A restaurant that is so nice to out-of-towners that they will probably never see again is undoubtedly amazing to their regulars...and is deserving of support. Highly recommended.
