"This elegant restaurant is housed inside a charming country house hotel of the same name, which boasts an immaculately kept rear garden and a delightful terrace that makes the perfect spot for an aperitif. The seasonal à la carte showcases the kitchen’s skills, offering quality British produce – like Wiltshire lamb loin – in carefully executed dishes. Ingredient combinations are well thought-out and dishes are always full of flavour." - Michelin Inspector

The Bath Priory

"What did you notice on arrival? This is a timeless, magical place. Up a gravel drive, along row of distinguished 19th-century houses on the east side of Bath lies the ivy-covered c.1835 house that is the Bath Priory. It's chocolate box pretty. Inside it's stunning and filled with fine art covering every wall from the elegant drawing rooms to your bedroom. What’s the crowd like? It's quite a smart place, owned by the Brownsword family, and it has a touch of nobility to it with guests to match in nice cars and good-looking clothing. I also noticed quite a few couples sans kids celebrating anniversaries. The good stuff: Tell us about the rooms. The rooms and suites are a mixture of clean and modern with nods to the past, mostly four poster beds, flowery fabrics and grey wood panelling. All feel spacious, even the smallest rooms. The Premium Deluxe room was perfect, with views on to the back garden, a four poster double bed and spacious bathroom. Lovely art on the walls, soft carpeted floors and a wonderful old Kubrick-style leather arm chair had me on entry. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The bed was firm with fine sheets and plenty of room, I was able to sleep crossways without falling off. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that worth a mention?Forget the mini-bar, this is order-in from the bar downstairs. The Espresso Martini and the Pisco Sour are worth a pop. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The bathroom was big, but the best thing was the size of the shower, big enough for two with both a forest shower and separate shower head, so plenty of water. I can see why anniversary couples like this place. L'Occitane products are a nice touch. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?The receptionist who got us checked in quickly and efficiently. There's a lot to be said for that after a long drive from London. Anything stand out about other services and features? The art—look out for a valuable painting by Sir John Lavery entitled "The Lady in Black."—and the outdoor spaces. The lovely gardens are dominated by a massive Cedar of Lebanon and an outdoor pool open in the summer. The Garden Spa is super sexy in design - the indoor pool just makes you desperate to dive into its perfect blue waters. Bottom line: worth it, and why?All in all it's worth a romantic trip, except that everyone else is doing it too. The seven course tasting menu at the Michelin-starred restaurant makes up for it though. There's enough good food here to rekindle any romantic flame." - Ramsay Short

Bath Priory (Bath, UK) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"You come to Bath for genteel tranquility and Georgian splendor, and Bath Priory offers generous helpings of both. Though near the city center, it’s a proper country house, full of antique character and spacious both indoors and out. Its formal gardens are a strength, as are its outdoor pool and the Garden Spa, the only L’Occitane spa in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile the rooms and suites are appropriately grand, whether in the main house or next door, and the dining and drinking venues are a major draw, from the formal restaurant to the more casual Pantry & Terrace, overlooking the gardens." - Tablet Hotels

Bath Priory Hotel | Best places to stay in Bath

"The Gothic-tinged Bath Priory, built in 1835, is a luxury retreat with landscaped gardens, a modern spa and exceptional food. The lounge and library are decked out with owner Andrew Brownsword’s private art collection, and the bedrooms are large and traditional in style. The hotel is a short walk from town, so it’s better suited to those looking to relax and indulge than pound the pavements in search of Bath’s major tourist attractions. The hotel’s exceptional afternoon tea, served in the four-acre gardens or library, is divine, and the Garden Spa offers an excellent range of treatments. It’s just on the outskirts of the city, but in a relaxed, upmarket neighbourhood. " - Sian Lewis

We recently had a wonderful stay at The Bath Priory Hotel whilst visiting our eldest at University. The location was perfect — peaceful yet only a short walk into town. Our room was spacious and luxurious, with views of the beautiful gardens. Breakfast was delicious, though service was a little on the slow side unfortunately. A special mention to the gardener, who truly made our stay memorable. She took the time to show us around parts of the garden, shared her incredible knowledge, helped carry our bags to the car, and even picked a few flowers for my husband and I as we left. Such a thoughtful gesture — we’ll never forget. We both said how refreshing it was to meet such a kind & enthusiastic young person. The facilities at the Spa were well maintained, creating a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. A perfect place to unwind — we look forward to coming back again.

The food is fabulous. We ordered the pork belly and the chicken and both were superb! |We also got room upgraded on our arrival which was a pleasant surprise. We got a spacious two bedroom with separate sitting/living room area that was very nice and cozy. Great homey feeling to the place. |Beautiful gardens as well!|Also very accesible walking to town. You get a great walk to town without it being excessive.|Staff was very nice.|Would definetely come back.

I implore you, do not stay here. This hotel is in dire need of a deep cleaning, full renovation and better trained team. ||While the pictures online make the Bath Priory appear charming and cozy, in reality it is musty, dusty and closer to feeling like an assisted age home than a quaint spa hotel. ||Our room was dirty including stained window treatments, bed skirts, walls and missing art work. The hotel itself feels run down with peeling wallpaper, banged up doors, and dusty carpets. ||Despite attempting to have a drink in the lounge, no one ever came through to take an order. ||The spa left much to be desired and we didn’t bother having treatments as we figured based on the facility it could not be worth it. ||Service was spotty - we had to ask for basics like conditioner and they forgot to bring our breakfast room service at the allotted time. We had to call down and when it came it only arrived with one set of silverware. ||The staff throughout the property seemed uninterested. ||Learn from our mistake, stay at the Royal Crescent instead. We almost booked there at a nearly identical rate but thought the Bath Priory’s location would be more relaxing. We had high tea at the Royal Crescent and it appeared much nicer and was the best part of our experience.

From first point of contact earlier this year to check out today, the service has been 5*. Kitty on reception was so friendly, helpful and accommodating. The room we stayed in was beautiful and had a lovely view of the garden. The food in the Pantry and the breakfast was delicious. Looking forward to visiting again!

Google
Disappointed overall. For spending £300 or $400 a night, this hotel did not reach expectations set by their website. The staff were amazing and service was good the night we ate at their “pantry,” but the rest of the stay was lacking a 5-star experience. The room, which was still quite small despite being a “Superior” was outdated (not in a quaint, charming way) The bed frame had lots of visible wear and the bed sconces were missing shades. The room and bathroom had almost no table or counter space and only two hooks for robes/ towels. The bathroom did not even have a toilet paper holder. The room also did not have air conditioning. Thankfully we had cooler weather during our stay and kept the fan on and windows open to help. If the weather had been any warmer we would have been extremely uncomfortable. The pools were nice but close quite early at 8pm. Overall it seems like the Priory wants to operate as a 5-star hotel without putting in effort to maintain 5-star facilities.

I surprised my girlfriend with Afternoon Tea for a 1 Year Anniversary. The food was incredible and they even surprised us with an extra plate of sweet treats to celebrate our anniversary. Kristina, our host, was so lovely, helpful, and made sure we had everything we needed. I would recommend to anyone thinking of coming!

*Review on the restaurant only* Highly recommend the Sunday Lunch: the quiet indoor seating area, peaceful garden, and amazing food makes for a great experience. Staff was notably young, but surely still attentive and young. The food was delicious, in particular the quai entree.

Google
Service was lovely - not too pushy but present when wanted and all functioned well. |The rooms were not particularly nice. Cosy, I suppose, but at least ours had a room cupboard feeling to it (Azalea) and the furniture was very worn.|The pool was very shallow, both inside and outside, and the advertised « sanctuary «  feeling was not quite there with the kids shouting and splashing around. The kids hours are on the prime time for the spa treatments, so we did not feel keen to use any services like we had planned.

Yelp
My advice to you if you're looking for a nice afternoon tea in Bath is this: go around to some of the local independent bakeries and cafes and pick up everything you might like (some nice scones, biscuits, sandwiches, etc.; you could even get all of this at Waitrose or M&S), then head over to Tea In The Gardens (a coffee stand located at the Botanical Gardens in Royal Victoria Park), order a tea, and have a picnic outside. You could also bring tea/coffee from home and do this anywhere in the city really: the Royal Crescent, Sydney Gardens, Henrietta Park, Norfolk Crescent, Green Park, the Parade Gardens... Any of which would be a nicer experience than The Bath Priory. The staff here was rude from start to finish: we were openly snickered at multiple times, we were made fun of for our accents, we were blatantly ignored every time we tried to ask for the bill. When we had finally paid - after they accused me of my card not working (it was their wifi; we watched them accuse another table before us of the same thing) - we asked if we could walk the grounds like so many other people had: we were laughed at. Literally, just a chuckle from the host as they handed me my card and walked away. While I appreciate that they offer both a vegetarian afternoon tea menu AND a vegan afternoon tea menu (book ahead for those), we were left underwhelmed by the former option. There was nothing special about the cheese and pickle, egg mayonnaise, cucumber and crème fraiche, or tomato and balsamic sandwiches (any of which I could have gotten better elsewhere). The scones were overbaked and stodgy. The mango choux had an unpleasant aftertaste. The macrons were flavorless. We both agreed the seasonal strawberry tart was the most delicious and vibrant thing on the tower, but everything else - especially given that it was £48 per person - left *a lot* to be desired. Finally, while the tea options are extensive and supposedly unlimited... we never received more than our one tiny pot despite asking. This, for me, is a hard pass.

Yelp
We had a very mediocre meal in the Pantry. The food was not well prepared and underwhelming. The pickled mackerel starter had only a very light vinegar tang and the pearl barley base was bland. The tagliatelle main was also lacking in flavour. The pasta was over cooked and claggy. They forgot our dessert. Service was spotty as well.

Yelp
On a trip to Bath last weekend we decided to treat ourselves to afternoon tea at this hotel. Before we even got there we were thinking it must be fancy, the taxi driver said it was the 'poshest place in Bath'..... Anyway it is a beautiful manor house type hotel with wonderful artwork on the walls, and very comfortable furnishings. The grounds to the rear are also suitable for a stroll after gourging oneself on cakes and finger sandwiches. We opted for the champagne afternoon tea and on general it did not dissapont. The sandwiches were tasty, and had good fillings. The cakes were yum, and the scones were reasonable. The teas on offer were good, and the ones we chose were very good. The Darjeeling and Lapsung (very smokey) the standouts. On the downside, there was a small bone in one chicken sandwich, the tea was in ceramic pots and not silver service, and the scones were only okay! Not as good as the afternoon tea in the Merrion in Dublin, who go the extra lenght, but is unfortunately very, very expensive.

Yelp
We spend a long weekend recently at the Bath Priory for my wife's birthday (a very significant, multiple-of-10 birthday...) It was amazing. We had dinner in the restaurant our first night and everything was perfect. My wife was pregnant, and they were very accommodating with the menu non-alcoholic but interesting cocktails. Meanwhile I found a bottle on the extensive wine list that did the trick. The food was fantastic. The next day my wife went for a "maternity" massage and she love it. Afterwards we sat in the indoor pool overlooking the countryside. The grounds are beautiful and worth wandering around, even in frigid mid-December when we were there. We availed ourselves of the inviting drawing room each evening to unwind and enjoy the fire. At one point, I tried to avail myself of a Lagavulin at what I thought was an honesty bar, but turns out Lagavulin availing is only available through the server... Overall the service was terrific, but to be clear it was not an inexpensive weekend (hence the 4 stars). I paid for one of the "nicer" rooms which was beautiful and comfortable, but not particularly big or impressive. I would definitely stay here again, but for our next visit I think we'll probably try the other Relais & Chateaux place in Bath (Royal Crescent) which is a bit more central.

Yelp
Where do I start? Everything was over the top WONDERFUL. Before I arrived, the staff helped guide us to their location (GPS was adamant on not rerouting), which lasted for 15-20 minutes. Upon arrival, a staff member greeted me as soon as the car door closed. I was immediately escorted with a tiny tour of the hotel, and shown the room. No paperwork, no painful sign in. Room was smartly and traditionally appointed. I stayed in the Africa room, which turned out to be very comfy and nice. No heavy, gaudy decor. Clean with comfortable amenities. Bottled water and whole fruit were nice touches. View of the garden were stunning. Also nice place to have a friend or 3 over for a chat or games in the sitting area of the room. The only negative is because the room has hardwood floors, I felt like my neighbor could hear me walk, as well as hear me open and close my door to my room. I immediately fell in love with the drawing room. A fantasy come true space, where I could pretend I am British royalty and enjoy the Ruinart Champagne. Dinner was when I decided I wanted it- with no reservations needed. Simply walk out to the patio and enjoy the summer, gardens, stars and divinity of excellent food, presentation, portion size and service. On a side note, I felt like the guests staying in the rooms behind the patio could hear my dinner conversation/discussion. Gym- excellent variety of well maintained machines and clean. Breakfast was lovely- fresh baked croissants, espresso coffees with fresh squeezed sweet orange juice. I got a window seat with view of the gardens and hot air balloons off in the distance. With a 2 night stay, I felt slightly enclosed in and had to concentrate on keeping my space private. It seemed like you couldn't speak too freely, because somebody could be outside your window admiring the flowers and accidentally get an earful. Maybe it was the hardwood floors in the room where sound resonances? Adding in my dinner experience, this could be why I feel this way. However, this is part of the "homey/family" feel and should not be changed. Service was excellent. I asked to have my room serviced, but was told the maids had gone home. However when I returned back to the room, it was alllllll clean!! Did some of the garden gnomes clean it? Nonetheless, this hotel rates 5 stars on every aspect. By the way, did I mention how much I loved the drawing room? And how pretty the garden was? Didn't have tea or use the spa. Next trip!

Yelp
What to do when you need a weekend away from it all and everything seems to be against you? The impeding ash cloud prevents you from going abroad and you won't have much sun in the UK either as the weather forecast predicts rain, rain and more rain. Thank god there is beautiful Bath, which offers you both, rural and city life (meaning if it rains you can go shopping :) ) and of course a huge quantity of spas. The Royal Crescent in Bath After a rather unpleasant stay at the Hilton in Bath and some bad food at the Olive Tree, we were lucky to discover The Bath Priory Hotel and Restaurant. This really is an oasis of calm, beauty and good food. Before you are getting too excited and start booking your next weekend away, let me introduce you to the major disadvantage first: the price. We are talking very special weekend away here. (unless of course you are an investment banker or married to one) The Bath Priory Hotel ticked a lot of boxes for me. Member of the Relais & Chateux group, you do get what you pay for. The service is immaculate even though I found it hilarious that the people working there were trying to imitate a French accent, but well, this might be required by Relais & Chateux, who knows. The hotel from the street side. It's prettier from the garden side though. The rooms are generous and charming with a lot of attention to detail (with Molton Brown products sometimes I am so easy to please). I loved the beautiful, big garden with mature trees and a vast selection of marvelous flowers, most of which I have never seen before. One day we just hung out in the nice spa with sauna, steam room and pool while it was raining outside. The massage there was amongst the best we had ever had. Adding to the immediate relaxation is the fact that you have chick magazines lying around everywhere. My intentions were so good, but in the end the Herald Tribune, The New York Review of Books and the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro remained unread while I educated myself with Psychology, Vogue and Glamour. I might have even read Heat Magazine Breakfast with fruit, French cheeses and delicious Eggs Benedict. You have to imagine them, they were gone before I could take a picture. But of course I am a food blog and so let's start on the delicious dinner I had at the Bath Priory Restaurant. Executive head chef is Michael Caines who holds two Michelin stars at the Bath Priory sister hotel Gidleigh Park in Devon. The actual cooking is done by head chef Sam Moody, who is not only a young and very talented chef but also a lovely guy. I really liked the fact that he was asking the diners for their opinion on the food. Not that there was much to fault I think it is 68 pounds for 3 courses, in our case it was included in the weekend package. We loved the first pre-starter. The Foie Gras (or duck liver) parfait was heavenly and smooth. Also nice but less memorable was the rice ball. The second pre-starter came as an espresso cup of warming and comforting soup (I think it was potato?) Possibly my most favourite dish of the evening was the Morel and Broad Bean Risotto. Moist and creamy, perfectly cooked rice with the delicious morel flavour was topped with generous parmesan shavings and tasted like summer on a plate. The dish was perfect without truffles, and even more so with them Usually not a big fan of lobster, I really enjoyed the Ravioli of Cornish Lobster. The pasta was al dente , the filling generous on the lobster and the lobster bisque beautifully united the flavours of the sea. One of the best duck dishes I have eaten in a long time was the perfectly prepared Slow cooked breast of Creedy Carver Duckling. What an ingenious idea to combine orange puree with anise sauce. I had one of my 'I really want to lick this plate' moments. For me maybe the least convincing of all the dishes was the Loin of Local lamb. Even though it was nicely prepared it didn't fully deliver the bold flavours common to the other dishes. Dessert time! With rhubarb being in season there was no way around the Plate of Rhubarb. 4 different ways to prepare rhubarb on one plate is heaven and I very much enjoyed the different textures and flavours and the fact that it was a very non-sweet dessert. The winner of course was the rhubarb crumble (it should have been 3 times the size) but I also savoured the rhubarb and custard and the tangy sorbet. We then selected 6 cheeses from the very attractive and generous cheese board. They all were good but I just love my Stinking Bishop! Good to know that there is excellent dining outside of London! Yelp
special night out was just that for my Birthday. Three courses early dinner, wine and water and service £125 for the two of us, and worth every penny. Their website shows early special which suited us for timing on a work night. Flavours were amazing, and beautifully presented. A cut above the rest. Posh nosh with a special touch, including a full description on serving. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm very nice!

Yelp
Never stayed here - but have lunched on a few occasions. Excellent food in a wonderful country house environment. This hotel exudes class and is within 20 mins walk to the centre of Bath. However, if you can afford to stay here, you probably don't have to do much walking

Good changes since Michael Caines became executive chef. Good flavours and they certainly know how to source the produce.

Yelp
I organized a hen lunch in this beautiful hotel/restaurant and i was overwhelmed at all the effort that was put into it by the staff. We where sat in the lounge surrounded by antiques and paintings enjoying sparkling wine before being taken through to our own private room, with place settings and menus. the food was served promptly and presented beautifully. the afternoon went by so quickly but everyone has since commented on what a lovely meal it was. Overall the food was exquisite and the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable. x

Yelp
We have just returned from a one night stay at the Bath Priory Hotel. We were given an upgrade to a premium deluxe room, and the room was lovely: antique furniture, pretty cushions, fresh flowers, view over the splendid gardens, etc. The service was warm and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for the multilingual staff. We found the location to be very central and the ambience exceptional. we would reccommend it to anyone.

Yelp
We had a special occasion and went for an early dinner. The price was half the a la carte but was just superb. The food was just really special and the service was 5 star including a full description of our gorgeous looking food. The place was wonderfully furnished in a traditional style with the walls covered in 1930s portraits and landscapes. Really special but not stuffy. The white cheverny? wine was very good and was just £32 bottle, one of their cheapest. planning next trip soon mmmmmmmmm

Yelp
During my recent mini-break we booked a table for dinner here.Wow.From the second we walked in we realised we were here for a whole experience, not just to eat dinner.Welcomed into a homely drawing room we were offered drinks and canapés,given menus to browse with no hint of 'you booked a table for 7pm,you showed up at 6:55,hurry up and sit down and eat'.The service was sublime from the start to the finish, from the sommelier who didnt mock me for not wanting red wine with my lamb to the waitresses who made darned sure mine and my partners plates were placed on our table at precisely the same time. The food was to die for.Portions were not huge but the food was rich and filling and I didn't leave wishing they had put more on the plate. When they found out that we were celebrating our anniversary they piped 'Happy Anniversary'onto our petit fours plate in white chocolate.Shane about the fact that it gets lost in french translation as happy birthday, but this happened to us when we celebrated in Paris one year,so it's become a bit of an in joke! If I had to find fault,it would be with the other diners and nothing more.I cannot comprehend why someone would pay lore attention to their iPad for the entire meal rather than their other half or their dinner, but I guess maybe whatever work they were doing paid for their stay! Be prepared to spend more than you ever thought you would on a meal here. For the likes of me that is a treat I won't be repeated for another year or two!Maybe next time I will save extra hard to spend a night there. What an experience that. Must be!
