The BBQ Shack

Tried The BBQ Shack for the first time today and it was OK. The place is very small with no indoor dining. You order at a window and there are two small tables on the porch you can eat at. I got the smoked turkey platter and the turkey was great. The mac and cheese was pretty good, but the baked beans tasted canned. My husband got the brisket platter and the brisket was really dry and flavorless. The collards he got were sweet which isn't how we are used to having collards so that was a little off putting. The sweet tea was also pretty bland. We sat on the porch to try and eat, and yellow jackets ended up perching on our food so we ended up having to leave and finish our food elsewhere. The lady at the counter also wasn't very friendly. I would come back here for the smoked turkey alone, but if that wasn't so delicious I wouldn't bother coming back.

Excellent brisket. You'll have to beat the lunch rush. The line can get really long but the wait is worth it. This visit the time from arrival to get food was less than ten minutes. I recommend getting brisket macdaddy sandwich on a pretzel bun. This place makes chains like Mission BBQ have to do their best to compete for the title of best BBQ in the area.

The bbq here is amazing and full of flavor. My favorite is the smoked turkey breast and brisket but what I absolutely loved was the cornbread. It was not like any cornbread I've ever had...slightly sweet and had a cake texture...I ate it like it was dessert!! The sauces are great too!

A hole in the wall place I luckily found. There was a HUGE line of patrons eagerly waiting for food as I arrived to place my order. Thank goodness one of them told me there was no line, they were all waiting for their food. Ring the bell to get a server to get your order at the window, and simply wait. The sandwiches are great! Full of flavor and a hefty weight to them as well. As soon as I finished my meal I feel asleep 😴 for a few hours 🤣🤣🤣

WOW! Best BBQ in town! Don't let the outside fool you. Yes, it does look like a normal house on the outside but take the risk and go in. It is well worth it. We tried the sampler to get a taste of their turkey, pulled pork and brisket. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Baked beans(AMAZING), Mac and cheese, and the coleslaw were so good. The bake beans were some of the best we have ever had. If you are looking "Your" BBQ spot then you found it.

My favorites are the mack daddy turkey and the brisket sandwiches. Cooked to perfection

WOW!!! So glad we waited till the next day when they were fully stocked. We caught on fast at how popular this place was by how fast they sell out. We got a little bit of everything and let me tell you,,, it was fantastic. Everything was cooked to perfection. The banana pudding was the best ending to our meal. Thank you! We jist moved here and are excited to say we will definitely be a regular

The Mac n cheese is frozen stouffers or noddles with cheese sauce. The brisket is dry, does not have a thick smoke ring indicating hours of smoke time which results in a juicier more tender brisket. The cornbread seems to be box brand. The turkey seems out of the bag because it is salty as all hell. Collards are sweet which puzzles me however appear to be made fresh. Save your money and go to somewhere that takes pride in the process of good bbq. Platter was a reasonable price at 10$ I see why.

The bbq is AMAZING! They know how to cook it right. You will not find it better anywhere else.

Basic bbq but not near as good as some Of the other places in town. Mac and cheese 4 stars, baked beans 3 stars, corn bread would have been 5 stars but the bottom was soggy in the to go container.

We stopped by here for some BBQ on our drive home from the Outer Banks. It was worth the few miles out of our way to try this place. My wife had the Bangin BBQ platter and I had the beef BBQ platter. Both had an excellent smoked flavor and various sauces paired well for each plate. Tender and juicy. The sides we had were the cole slaw, sweet potato and mac and cheese. You cannot go wrong with any of those. The service was friendly and fast. We sat out on their small deck and enjoyed our lunches. This was the perfect stop for lunch to break up a long drive.

Food is always delicious & hot. Great value for combo platter. Wonderful mom & pop place. Such a good following that they can afford to be open for only 10-2 on weekdays, closed on weekends. They probably need the shortened hours to rest, because they are busy!

I saw this place mentioned on Yelp's Top 50 in Coastal Virginia and decided to finally give it a try! Didn't realize it is so close to where I work! Prices are very reasonable, and my BBQ Platter was delicious! The cornbread was the bomb! I did have to wait a bit but the food came out fresh and hot! The employee who runs the window was awesome, very friendly and engaging! Definitely going to go back again soon during my lunch break or maybe to get a pound to go for dinner!

I had lunch here a couple of weeks ago on a weekday arriving early at 11:00 a.m. They open at 10:00 a.m. Walking in I noticed they had no restrooms here and I wanted to wash my hands. The only option was a container of hand sanitizer on the counter. I used it but noticed that it was very diluted and wasn't sure as to its effectiveness. I ordered a MacDaddy brisket sandwich which is their largest at 6 oz. I added baked beans and cole slaw for sides with a drink. While waiting for my food which was only about 5 minutes, I noticed that this restaurant has limited seating both inside and out under the front patio. When the food arrived I went outside to eat. The sandwich was very good. Very good bread bun and meat. Quality taste for sure and I graded the sandwich at a 4. The beans were a 4.5 and the cole slaw a 4. I really enjoyed this meal and quickly determined that they know how to make very good BBQ here. I understand and agree with it's high ratings. They close most days by 5 p.m. Also the food here is reasonably priced.

It's sad to say that I found the best BBQ joint in all of Hampton Roads right before I move away. I'm such a dummy! I knew about The BBQ Shack (TBS) for quite some time, but I thought it was further away than it actually was. Today I realized they are only 20 minutes from my house! Suffice it to say, I will visit as often as I can until I leave. TBS is a tiny restaurant, offering a small menu and catering to mostly to-go clienteles, as they do not have many tables. The locally owned business, and who opened in 2010, consists of the owner, his daughter and her boyfriend. During my first visit, I got a chance to talk with the daughter and she was wonderful. I quickly realized why their 5-star average rating on Yelp continues to dominate in the BBQ world. Now, let's talk about their food! Here are my favorites: Top 3 Meats: 1) Brisket 5* 2) Ribs 4.5* 3) Pulled Pork 4* Not recommended: Turkey I've never been a big fan of brisket until I tried TBS's brisket. Man oh man--was that good! So moist, tender and flavorful! Highly recommend their brisket. The ribs were tender, smoky and tasty, especially when you add their delicious rib sauce. They're only available on Fridays so keep that in mind and go early! Their pulled pork is a bit unique compared to others; they use a vinegar sauce and a bit of heat. I've read that their turkey is great so maybe I was there on a bad day, but my turkey was kind of dry. Top 3 Sides: 1) Beans 5* 2) Coleslaw 4.5* 3) Green Beans 4* Honorable Mention: Macaroni and Cheese Not recommended: Potato Salad My first visit I got the beans and coleslaw. I thought both were great! Their beans are sweet with lots of black pepper (note: they use a lot of black pepper in their sides). I enjoyed their coleslaw as I'm pretty picky when it comes to my 'slaw, but I forget now what it tasted like. Sorry! Today I tried their Green Beans, and they were good--a hint of sweetness and black pepper, and maybe some vinegar? I was impressed with their mac and cheese because most places overcook their pasta. Their macaroni was perfect and the cheese sauce was nice and creamy. It was easy to tell that they use Velveeta (V). I know many people like their mac with V, but I'm not one of those. So, if you like the V, you will love their mac and cheese. If you're not a fan of the V, skip it. Their Potato Salad was probably my least favorite item on their menu. I just didn't like the flavors. Maybe a lot of dill? Whatever it is, I don't dig it. Lastly, let's talk about value. TBS has some amazing prices. I was shocked today when I ordered the Rib Platter for $6.99. It comes with 3 ribs (it doesn't sound like much, but they had a lot of meat on them and I was full), 2 sides and either a roll or cornbread. And the Sampler Platter comes with 3 different meats, 2 sides and either a roll or corn bread for $7.99. Seriously--I pay that at fast food restaurants! When it comes to outstanding food, great service and super value--TBS is a cut above the rest. If you haven't been to TBS, then get your derrière there now. I will be a fan for life even when I move away. Now my question is: do they ship? :-P P.S. Make sure you get the cornbread. Trust me!!!

Best local BBQ joint here, that I've found. Love the brisket. Friendly service. Small restaurant (1 table) so it's a good grab and go place. You may wait a bit when the line is long so call ahead. Brisket Sandwich is my go to. Add pickles and onions.

Hile-in-the -wall spot with great bbq. Near Hardee's on George Washington in Deep Creek near Military Hwy. You won't be disappointed

Portions see a little small, but maybe Americans could use smaller portions? ‍ Everything is always seasoned and cooked to perfection. Cut and dry simplicity as far as ordering goes, no dine-in so they focus on amazing food! I don't even understand how it's possible to have Turkey that moist

What can I say that hasn't already been said. My husband rarely bowls over with enthusiasm for bbq but he sure did today. He practically inhaled his Bang BBQ sandwich it was so good. 3 hours later and he's still oohing over it. My Mac Daddy trio was just as good. Everything tasted fresh and like bits of bbq heaven. The pulled pork slider had just a smidgen of heat which I normally dislike but the overall taste was delectable. I don't know how but one Friday I will taste the ribs. Probably have to call out of work but it will happen. I've always thought this place was permanently closed because every time I went by it was closed. I just didn't get there at their 4 hour window. Most definitely a place to visit. Ps, I had the brisket slider the next day. I nuked it for about 45 seconds and it was the best brisket I've ever had! The mac n cheese wasn't for me but the beans were yummy! I can't wait for our next visit.

Exactly what it says a BBQ shack.... Actually a converted house with limited outdoor seating on a tiny front porch and a closed dining room. Weird place.

Yelp raved about this place so of course, me loving BBQ, I had to check it out. The place is a small take out with only a few uncomfortable plastic picnic tables and plastic chairs to sit. So definitely a place for the to go orders. They were out of a lot of sides so what they did have is baked beans and Mac & cheese. Both were meh... I got the Turkey breast sandwich and that was AWSOME! Flavorful and not Salty, hubbies pull pork BBQ sandwich was great too. Will definitely be back

I have been wanting to try this place for months ....And I finally was 15 minutes away from this spot on Friday ....I had to stop by and give the ribs a try. Ribs is one of my favorite foods!!! ( plus, I consider myself a BBQ or smoke rib expert!!..lol lol lol) I got my slab ribs to go. The smoked rib aroma took over the car... I had to taste them..OMG, OMG!! These ribs was perfectly season and grilled/ smoked!! These are the BEST EVER ribs in Virginia!!!! Kudos to The Grill Master!! Oooooo the barbecue sauce was on point! I requested my ribs to be without the sauce. Due to a lot of places pour extra sauce over the ribs and it takes away from the flavor of ribs. These ribs were so good ..I could eat them again, today. IF I had some left. My husband, also thought the ribs was perfectly done correctly!

Found this spot through Yelp and boy we're we glad. But if you're trying to eat lunch at 12 you might as well call it in and come pick it up. It's very small inside and around lunch the line is out the door. They have very fair prices and you can double the meat for cheap. I got the pulled pork platter which comes with 4 oz of BBQ and I doubled it for $3 more. It comes with 2 sides so I had to go with the Mac and cheese but it was pretty disappointing little flavor and watery. Their BBQ and the Carolina sauce they give with it was phenomenal, rrreeaallyy good and flavorful BBQ. The spicy BBQ sauce they had on the tables was excellent too. Will be back!

Okay so the trio sliders are BOMB..... pulled pork is delicious and flavorful .... The brisket is so tender and smoky it's so good and the turkey is soooo tender and good! 1/2 slab of ribs were so tender the bone come right out. I love that they put the sauce on the side to dip. The coleslaw was okay on its own. But in the barbecue sandwich complemented it perfectly. The green beans tasted funny really sweet seems like they put a lot of sugar in them . The potato salad could of used some sugar it wasn't good to me . Cornbread was good and sweet. Banana pudding was good. Basic but good. Staff is nice . Has a Mom and pop feel my favorite kind of places to eat. Small but cozy. All the barbecued items were great . The sides need some work.

THEE most well seasoned, tender and juicy brisket that I can recall having. Speedy service with a smile made the trip to Deep Creek worthwhile. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Good barbecue in styrofoam. We got the ribs, brisket, and the pulled pork. The brisket was by far the best. The Mac and cheese was very creamy but tasted a little like velveeta, I did like the green beans though

Awesome! What more can anyone say about this place!! As soon as they open a franchise opportunity I will be the first to jump on! While the place may need a bit of an upgrade or potential location change this is to say the least as the food is top notch! Get it while you can because hours are short! They tease you and they know they do! The brisket is unreplicateable and the BBQ sandoor trio is AMAZING!!! My mouth is watering thinking about then right now: I love this place.

We ate here for the first time today after reading so many amazing Yelp reviews it was a no brainier. And yep...it was really good!! We had tried to order food once before but it was after 3 so there wasn't much left. Also the hours of operation that Yelp has listed is not correct they close much earlier! We tried a little of everything: the ribs were so good! Glad we went early because they sell out quick because many people call to reserve theirs. We also had a sampler plate. The chicken was our least fave but still good and very moist. Pork was seasoned and super yum. The brisket was literally falling into pieces as I was fishing it out on each plate. Mac and cheese yummy yummy yummy!!! Green beans were interesting...as in a little sweet but seasoned well...they jury is still out on them! There was no potato salad available next time I guess. The Cole slaw is good as well. Really this was overall a great trip and worth the drip for us. Just an FYI there isn't much seating do best to plan a picnic or take home.

I love the beef and cheddar. I haven't been in awhile due to my last order being wrong and I believe the daughter of the owner did it on purpose. I ordered a beef and cheddar and I got home it was beef and Swiss! I have NOT BEEN BACK!

Great little place that's tucked away in Deep Creek. Get the briscut!

Family run business. I love this place. I buy BBQ by the pound (or multiple pounds from them. They sell it refrigerated by the pound, which comes in handy because it is just me, my wife, and our 3 year old son. The latter two don't care for smoked meats very much because they have bad tastes I also really like that they make their own regional BBQ sauces. I'm Eastern North Carolina or Carolina Gold all the way as I like the savory more than the sweet, but they have Memphis style and some other sweet sauces for those that like that flavor.

Had lunch takeout for work group, wow, i will be back. Pulled pork, slaw, baked and green beans, mac and cheese all delicious. And good sweet tea.

Hmmm, so GOOD! I got the sampler for $7.99, brisket, BBQ and turkey and two sides. Everything is absolutely amazing and great portions. It's a small little place set back from the road so keep your eyes open or you'll miss it

Super food at great prices, yum! The cornbread was a delicious surprise - warm, fresh, cake like. Enjoyed the pulled pork and brisket which was fabulously smoky. Green beans were a bit sweet for my taste but still good. Cole slaw was perfect.

Well BBQ Shack, you did not disappoint! My husband and I came in today, our first time in as we heard this was a hidden gem! Now, being from Texas I love me some good brisket! I sure got that! It was very tender and smoked as was the turkey! I enjoyed the pulled pork but still adjusting to the vinegar based bbq sauce y'all have up here, its not my personal fav but the meat itself was very tasty and tender! I'm just use to Texas bbq sauce. Both sides I had were really good as well! So all in all, we'll be back! Glad we found y'alls little shack!

Went to BBQ shack on a road trip- great choice. Got the small banging bbq sandwich and it was delish!! As was the smoked turkey.

OMGawd amazing! Had the Hot Butt! So flipping good! And customer service was beyond anything I've experienced in years! Amazing! I can't to eat this bbq and collards again!

We live in Norfolk and we would come to Chesapeake just to come eat here! It was soooo good.

Ok I give them a four star because their BBQ was delicious. That's what they advertise for and that's what they are good at. With that said they can improve on their sides. The Mrs has the Sampler and it came with brisket, turkey, pull pork, she enjoyed the BBQ but she ordered green beans and Mac and cheese for her two sides. The green beans tasted straight from the can with sugar added, the Mac and cheese....well it should not be called that at all. They definitely need someone's grandmothers help with the sides. I had the rib platter with extra meat, baked beans and potato salad. Ribs were superb, delicious, seasoned perfect and can hold their own without sauce. The potato salad was store bought and straight from carton to plate add paprika. Baked beans had a little more attention than all the sides I tasted BUT they were not memorable at all. Again four stars because the BBQ was superb, next time I will just come for the meat, no sides. Until next time, this has been another OK Fatboy Adventure!

Stopped by because of the 5 star rating. Highly disappointed with such a high review on YELP. Of 83 reviews and 5 stars this place should be a 2.5 tops. I am giving a 2 star to drop the total rate of this place. The meats are decent nothing to tell friends about. The mac n cheese is probably kraft boxes. The baked beans are likely generic canned beans. Nothing here would give me the desire to return.
