Spacious NYC coffee shop with super duper cool artwork, drawings and decor all around you! Makes the experience more fun and interesting. Layout of shop is nice with plenty of seating areas. One of my favorite coffee spots to go to while in New York, East Village. Coffee is delish here and the fresh warm pastries! Menu is interesting as well with many options, great creative scene!

A surprisingly relaxed spot for conversation and latte, in the space of the old St. Mark’s Bookshop (1977-2016). Plenty of student types and co-working, big bright space, big selection of coffee. I want to try the açaí bowl things, they look competitive with Playa Bowls. Solid stop when you’re cutting through the neighborhood.

The wifi doesn’t really work and the matcha is bad. I basically just ordered milk. Prices are pretty good for new york and there is lots of space which is nice. I hope their actual coffee is better

Nice atmosphere just the chairs are uncomfy and it seems all the tables are wobbly. It’s really nice how laptop friendly the cafe is and is very nice to study in, just the coffee is not very good. Tasted like warm milk and a hint of instant coffee and very expensive for the quality of what you get. The pastries looked promising but did not try any this time. Lots of gluten free cookies though!

The Bean is a cozy, friendly spot that’s perfect for a quiet breakfast. I come here regularly and love their variety of acai bowls. Highly recommend for a relaxing start to the day!

Mediocre food, overpriced and service is worse. Ordered a stale, cardboard cinnamon danish. WiFi is 2 hour limit, and a complete hassle to set up. Told the guy that my WiFi wasn’t working - gave me a petulant “not my problem”. Employees aren’t attentive when I’ve been standing there waiting 3 minutes. I don’t usually write reviews, but I feel compelled to send a message. If you’re willing to put up with this BS, this place is just for you 🤷‍♂️

I’ve been coming here for many years. One of my favorite places for acai bowls, bagels, and coffee - but mostly the acai bowls because they’re delicious here. It’s always a nice environment to open up a laptop and chill - also a great atmosphere to hang out with a friend and chill. Many others do the same. This place has the best coffee shop vibes.

It's really just ehh… the wibe is fun but that is about it. The stuff wasn't even trying to be friendly not being their regular. Wanted way too long, having no one in front of me. Ordered a a goat cheese and spickacj quiche, was warmed up in a microwave, but I guess that is ok. The strange part it smelled so eggy, overwhelmingly. Tasted ok not good not bad. I guess if you have to visit, but wouldn't be my first (or second) choice.

It was the worst decaf americano I've ever had in my life. It was so thin I only tasted water and couldn't taste any of coffee. It looked thin orange color like thin iced black tea. I should've took picture of it for the post but I threw it away right after I left the store as It was so bad that I wanted to get normal decent coffee to fix my mouth and walked away faster to find a real coffee place nearby. Before I left the store I actually asked the young guy politely to fix a little bit stronger at least but he didn't offer new one or did not even try to re-make it to right. He didn't have the manner neither and unprofessional. I regret I already paid him a generous tip before received my coffee, he did not care how customer felt at all. I was surprised this shop is located at competitive NYC street where almost every block has cafe or coffee shops. I won't be back to this store and do not recommend it to my friends or people - better to stay away from this place if you want to get decent coffee and service.

I'm a regular at this location of The Bean in East Village, and have been coming here for around 2.5 years. The staff is kind and the service is quick. This location is massive, with plenty of seating and a variety of table sizes, which makes it suitable for groups. The coffee is pretty good, but can be inconsistent in quality, and slightly expensive for the quality. But this is expected in Manhattan. The tea drinks are very standard and consistent, though, so I highly recommend giving those a shot. I tend to come here for the working environment, but if you're looking to stop by somewhere for a to-go coffee, I recommend trying one of the other nearby coffee spots, such as Irving Farm, 787, MUD, Elsewhere Espresso, or Think Coffee. I love that this coffee shop is open until 9:00 PM, as many coffee shops close early. I typically visit coffee shops to get work done, so I appreciate flexibility in when I'm able to do so, and this daily 9:00 PM closing time allows me to work after hours as needed. They offer free WiFi here with the purchase of any item. A unique WiFi code is provided on your receipt. The WiFi code expires after 15 minutes, and lasts 2 hours. This means that if you would like WiFi access for longer than 2 hours, you must purchase another item to receive a new code, but I don't mind that. I've noticed that it tends to be especially crowded on rainy days, which makes it pretty noisy and difficult to find seating, despite how large the space is. They used to carry gluten free bagels, which was much appreciated, especially because most of the other local bagel shops that carry GF bagels are very expensive. I would love it if The Bean would bring those back! Aside from those bagels, they don't have many gluten free food options, so if you're GF like me, I don't recommend coming here for food. All in all, I will continue coming here to get a cappuccino, an iced tea, or a tea latte and getting work done. I recommend if you're looking to do the same!

They have a paid printer!! But unfortunately, I find that's all they're good for. This location does have plenty of spaces to work. Would be great for camping out and getting things done. The atmosphere is pretty nice but can get fairly noisy and annoying. In terms of food it's a definite skip, and their drink options aren't great either. The fruit bowls aren't special and don't taste as fresh and yummy as you want them to. The coffee would taste better if you got it elsewhere. Food in fridge somehow is always stale and lacks flavor. It's a nicely kept chain that's clean and good for working but I wouldn't buy any food or drinks for reasons other than this.

This particular The Bean location has gone downhill since I first started coming here in 2013. The older man at the counter was very unfriendly. When I asked him if I could use the bathroom first before ordering, he said I had to order first and "there's someone in the bathroom anyways". The drink I ordered was extremely mediocre. I had to leave my drink outside on the table unattended to use the bathroom because the bathroom was dirty and unkempt. Do not recommend coming to this location and I will not be back to The Bean after this. There are several other NICER and CLEANER cafes to visit in the city and The Bean is not what it used to be.

I hate complaining but honestly my experience was just so bad the moment I walked in. As soon as my siblings and I walked in, we were instantly stared at by the workers there. There was no hello or welcome, just stares. I thought it was maybe because we were a group of people so I didn't really mind. I was about to order something while my sister went to the bathroom but we were greeted with a "You have to buy something to use the bathroom". I was instantly thrown off as I was standing right in front reading the menu ready to order. Because of that, we just left the whole cafe. To add to the cherry on top, as we left, we said our thank yous and goodbyes, but again, was left with no response and stares. With such good reviews from others, I was surprised we were treated like this. I'm very disappointed with the whole establishment, especially the workers.

Mediocre, overpriced coffee with rude service. Paid almost $7 for a latte just to be asked to put my coffee sleeve on "off to the side" meaning not at the register. There was nobody in line behind me nor was there risk of me spilling my drink. Why would you assume that I was going to put the sugar in my coffee at the register also? If you guys didn't hide the sweeteners behind the counter and force us to ask for them instead of putting them "off to the side" like a normal cafe then you wouldn't be so fearful of customers putting sweetener in their drinks at the register. Also: their lids are leaky. On my way to work, my latte wouldn't stop dripping all over me.

The elderly male staff member was shockingly rude and seemed quite racist. It was the absolute worst experience.

Great local coffee joint in their neighborhood. Their coffee options are awesome and I love that they have specialty drinks. I also really like how artistic the walls and exterior of this shop are. It feels very NY. The service is fast, I love how large the space is and that there are plenty of seats. They also have a print-with-me station that makes working from here very convenient. I have not tried any of their food options but as far as space, service, and drinks go, they get full scores for me. 5/5

The Bean has been good to me. I've gotten so much work done here. I appreciate the friendliness of staff. Food and drinks are solid. This is one of my favorite locations. Plenty of outlets and natural light. There is a bathroom - must get key from the front.

The Bean is the first coffee shop I've visited during my NYC visit. The first warning flag that I shouldn't have ignored was that I couldn't smell the scent of freshly ground coffee that I'd usual pinpoint at coffee shops I considered great in the past. I ordered a matcha latte made with oat milk. I like oat milk, but I expect to taste the matcha too. Especially if I'm charged $7 and get half a cup of ice. The cashier was unfriendly and charged me for a large size without asking me what size I wanted. It wasn't like there was a line behind me. So he didn't have any reason to rush. He also rudely corrected me when I said matcha milk instead of matcha latte as though there was much of a difference. I have no doubt people only come here for using the WiFi and the large size of the interior. Especially if they can't even get a drink as simple as a matcha latte done correctly.

One of my favorite coffee shops in east village and definitely my favorite bean location. I always get an iced latte and love coming here to read or work on stuff.

I have been to this location twice and I think it is pretty good. I love the amount of tables and the cute drawings on the chalkboard. They have wifi that comes with your receipt but you can only use it for 2 hours. There are convenient outlets for laptop and phone charging as well. I've liked the drinks I've gotten here but the food is not very good. If you're looking for a good pastry, bagel, or egg sandwich just go somewhere else after your 2 hour wifi time is up.

Cool, trendy spot. I tried to Mona Lisa coffee with java chips and it was tasty! Refreshing and honestly just the right size (small was enough). Price was average for NYC. Theres a lot of space to sit here, they give you the password to the wifi on your receipt after purchase if you're looking to get some work done. Overall a good experience

Love their iced coffee, always offer an excellent service, and great atmosphere on any day of the week. it is my go to coffee place.

I loved my white chocolate coffee with soy milk only in I also got a green smoothie ph refresher from this location in the afternoon with an açaí bowl.

Decent coffee, pricing on par with the rest of the neighborhood. Lots of seating, but actually not a great place to meet people or get work/studying done, as it is VERY loud. People talking, sure, but in the middle of day the music is BLASTING. Other better options in the area.

Looking for a snack in the area with my beloved, but very picky friend, we settled on The Bean. I got a chocolate dipped strawberry ice pop & an açaí bowl called "The Perch" which means it has Nutella in it. The ice pop was $6. I'm not cheap but that is quite high. Like $1 per bite. It did taste very good though. The açaí bowl was also very good but the Nutella... It was rock hard! I was so confused. Did it harden from the cold? Was it always hard? It may have been my fault for not eating it right away, it's possible it froze. The bowl was still very good, but I was a little turned off. And inside the ventilation seemed so poor, the air was sticky. There's available seating outside and that's where I ate my pop. But I was so cold.

I got a large coffee with cream, no sugar. It was flavorful yet smooth, with nice aromas and a balanced taste profile. It went well with a dessert which I got from Spot Dessert Bar down the next street. Service was quick and efficient, though I wish they would automatically put on a cup sleeve for you for hot drinks.

I really want to love The Bean because it has so potential as a staple study spot with the large location and variation of tables. It's the perfect amount of crowded with outdoor seating always available. The specialty drinks seem enticing and they have a range of pastries with GF and savory options. Coffee is great, I enjoyed the iced mocha (pic attached) and my friend enjoyed the frozen Mona Lisa which is their specialty of espresso, ice, and milk. Not sure her tummy enjoyed it though... Unfortunately, during my recent visit to the 3rd Ave location, one of the cashiers was flat-out unfriendly. My roommate inquired if an unmarked, unannounced order was hers and received an "idk ", a glare, and no follow-up. Personally, I was not offered a receipt that contains the wifi code. When I decided that I wanted to stay and work, I went back to ask for the receipt (holding the $6 coffee I ordered) she said "that's too bad. don't forget to ask for a receipt next time, okay?". There won't be a next time if this lady is still there. Also couldn't use the restroom because of this :/ Feel bad because last time I went the staff was super helpful but one person really brings down the vibe. There are other specialty coffee places in NYC with better service. Try the 2nd Ave location instead!

I love this place! The vibe is relaxing; so great for reading, working on a laptop, or just catching your breath. It's pretty big, so you probably won't have a hard time finding a seat. The coffees are great too! I usually get the cold brew, which is delicious. One time I got the mother Theresa (frozen) and it was DELICIOUS! The food is good too - I've tried their coffee cake, "bridge" açaí bowl, and butter croissant. All yummy and good portion sizes. Everyone who works here is so nice, too. I appreciate their kind comments and smiles at the counter. Bonus for NYU people - they accept campus cash and give discounts to college students! Highly recommend. :)

I think the drinks are good and made well, but the rest of this cafe throws me off. I really dislike how you could only use the WiFi after you buy something (and then have to receive a code on the receipt) and it is only for a small set amount of time. Afterwards you would have to buy something again just to continue to use their WiFi. The interior is huge and widespread, so I don't understand why they are so cheap with the seating. It's really disheartening because I used to enjoy coming here to study or to get some work done and now they made it impossible to do so unless you spend $8 per hour on a drink.

This is probably the only coffee shop location that I manage to always find a seat at! Maybe im just lucky but I always manage to get a table to do my work here. I've only tried chai latte, matcha latte, and iced coffees here and they have all been pretty good! Theres always someone that walks around and cleans the tables so that's good and they have wifi, printers, and even computers that you can rent. I've also tried their bagels and macarons which are pretty good. Service has been decent for me as well!

Love the Frozen Mona Lisa drink here. Plenty of seating. Strong reliable wifi. Clean bathroom. Pay no attention to the haters writing one and two star reviews. This is a nice spot to grab a drink, snack, and get some work done on your computer if in the area. Many hot and cold coffee, juices, teas, and smoothie options. A lot of food items on menu to choose from - baked goods, pastries, healthy breakfast bowls, and savory items. Large, bright, and airy place. Artwork and inspirational quotes on the walls. Decent staff. A nice alternative to corporate Starbucks.

The Bean in Astor Place is a nice spot to grab a coffee and read/study. There are many tables available inside and outside, and you get free wifi with your purchase. Lots of outlets and seats, perfect amount of natural lights right next to st marks. You get the wifi passwords or some sort through purchasing something worn a receipt from the cashier. However the wifi will stop working after an hour or two and you have to spend money again to buy something in order to get a new digit codes. Restroom needs some serious care throughout the course of the day or renovations if budget allows for sure

I had the Nutella Fitzgerald, which was absolutely divine... it was like a hazelnut roast and hit chocolate hybrid. The balance of the espresso, whole milk, and Nutella was perfect in my beverage. I was able to find a place to sit and sip, but it seemed like there were a lot of people that were at work on their computers, so the likelihood of finding a place to sit may be hit or miss. The service while placing my order was a bit slow, as it seemed the cashier was also tasked with doing some of the coffee prep as well. The place could probably get an extra staff member or two to be most efficient. Beautiful spot, great beverage, service was decent. Will definitely go again next time I'm in town, and might try a little bite next time.

my favorite location for the bean! i've only been here once but it was when i was desperately scavenging for study cafes near nyu. this is a bit of a walk from the main 'campus' area but i would say it's worth it. i've only had "the perch" açaí bowl but i throughly enjoyed it! i came during the evening and found that it is a bit loud but not super so it would still work fine as a study cafe. it even has a printer! staff was super sweet and the customers behind me also kindly helped me pick something to eat as it was my first time there. look forward to coming back!

I have been going to different locations of The Bean for years - the 1st Ave location (before they closed), the second Ave location and Astor Place location. Today I went to the Astor Place location at about 1130 am, I walked up to the counter and asked if I could use the mens room. The person behind the counter said I had to buy something. There were probably only about 8 customers in the entire cafe. I'm a recently retired 70 year old male - who has worked different positions in sales/retail for my entire career. I let the person know that I have been a frequent customer for years. She said it didn't matter I had to purchase something. She said she didn't recognize me (I usually go to the other location). I politely asked her again and she said that is the policy. I asked if it was worth loosing a customer over this and she said she didn't care. I asked to speak to a manager and she said she is the manager, she said her name is Melody. She is medium height, dark long hair and looked to be in her late 30's.. I understand and difficult situation retail establishments grapple with about the use of their facilities. I get it, but the attitude that Melody displayed left me with such a bad feeling - I felt bullied. She just didn't care, wasn't empathetic, questioned my honesty about being a customer - she just seemed to want me to get out of the cafe. I will never go to this or any other location of The Bean again and I urge others follow my lead.

I came here to pick up mobile order around noon and the place was semi full of people sitting and studying. I really liked their menu and how they categorize it. The price is a little on the high end but it's worth it. I ordered the Eagle Pitaya Bowl and I really enjoyed it. The oats were delicious and the fruits were fresh. Even though the bowl seems small, it was filling enough for me.

Okay experience. Prices are fair for Astor place area, but the cold brew ($4.25) is not good. There are better prices for iced coffee at this price point. The apple oat bar ($4.50) was great, but pricey for the quality. The redeeming quality is that this cafe functions more of a study spot with wifi which is the real purpose why I come here. I would come back for a pastry.

Great coffee at a reasonable price. I've been to this location several times, and They are always consistent with a good brew of coffee. They have never messed up my order ever. I like how large the inside is and it gives people a lot of space to sit in a coffee shop, read, or work on some thing. I most recently came while they were doing outdoor dining. There was a lot of tables outside which was nice. They do a very good job of doing social distance ordering, cleaning, and serving you from the bar. You have to place a mobile order on the computers or on your phone. Then you pick it up and can go outside and enjoy your beverage or food. I always enjoy a nice latte art too :)

Basically a shit show when you walk in. Instead of the stated 5 minutes it took 15 and your just standing their waiting bc you think it's coming ... no place to sit when it arrives bc people camp out for hours. When you finally open your bowl to find a rotten banana. Fail

Great place to study and do work! They have outlets by the tables which is a great plus! Got a spinach quiche and it did the job mid working session!

Stopped by for the first time two weeks ago and ordered the Kale smoothie. It was organic and tasted good. I wanted somewhere to quickly finish some school work since I had my laptop with me and it was really hot outside. Its not a library but with some soundproof headphones, you can be able to get some things done in peace. They have a lot of vegan options. I recommend their organic juices and smoothies.

The people who work here are rude and the coffee is mid. Do not recommend trying to work from here because they don't help you get on the Wi-Fi

TLDR; If you're looking for reliable complimentary wifi, seriously avoid this spot. My day has been ruined twice already. The unreasonably dumb wifi tech and policy and cunning cashier are what ruined my experience here forever. I like the fact that they have complimentary 2 hour wifi for each purchase above $5. Buuut, you need to connect to it within 15 minutes of purchase or else the access code on your receipt expires. This is the dumb part. Why? Because here's what happened to me, TWICE - Put in my order at the cashier, spent a few minutes looking for a table to sit on, went back to wait for my coffee, got mine and friend's coffee in ~10-12 minutes, came back to table, started up laptop, tried to connect to wifi network, it connects but the pop up to enter the access code doesn't pop up for a few more minutes (probably because they use shitty old school tech), and when it actually does pop up the 15 minutes are already up. WTF!!!! So I go back to the cashier and tell them about what happened. The first time, they gave me a new code from a pickup order's receipt and then everything was good. The second time (the next week) a different cashier tells me "you should've come to me before the 15 minutes were up. It doesn't work like that here (when I asked for a diff receipt/access code)" Like what the actual f*ck? I was literally here 15 minutes ago ordering my coffee and you say it doesn't work like that???? ARE YOU DUMB OR ARE YOU JUST THAT CUNNING? I will never come back here. I will talk shit about this place till the day I die and in my next life (yeah reincarnation). Suffer in hell cashier. Or ask the team to get a better wifi setup. I'm pretty sure you can set it up so that the access expires after 2 hours of purchase and you can access it any time before then. Why give customers only 15 minutes to connect to the wifi? Why why why why? "It doesn't work like that" lol I can fix your wifi for free.

I've been to many "Beans" in the city, and this one, BY FAR is my favorite! Why? It feels really clean There is a lot of seating with a lot of access to plugs The seating includes padded benches with back rests The wifi is strong The staff is friendly They used to have live music (not sure if that's still a thing, hope so!)

I ordered cappuccino and it was probably the worst coffee I have had in the city. It was all latte and no espresso. Don't go here if you love coffee.

The girl with the pink hair is rude as hell. I usually never leave negative reviews, but jeeeeeezus. No eye contact, no thank you, practically threw my receipt at me. I've never been treated so rudely within 30 seconds of entering a coffee shop, lol. Might give it another chance, maybe the other employees are nicer than pink haired girl.

I am often chillin at the Bean! They've got some decent pastries, sandwiches, and drinks, but what I appreciate about them most is their ample indoor seating. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, they're only doing takeout and outdoor seating at the moment, which last I checked, does not have heating. The staff are pretty nice people and I've never had a negative experience with them. It is worth mentioning that they only have a single restroom, so it's not always very clean or available. If you can look past that though, it's a great place to study, get work done, or do some reading! They have iPad kiosks that can help make ordering faster, as well as wifi that is readily accessible. Also, a 10% student discount for all you lernersss. Stop by sometime!

I have always loved their bagel and cream cheese and now they're not made fresh they're delivered. I wouldn't complain if they were good, but I just threw out half my bagel. There was almost no cream cheese no the bagel and samon was also not so good. I will never order it again.

The Bean is a great coffee shop! Honestly, it's probably one of, if not my favorite, coffee shops in the city. Located conveniently next to the Astor Place stop / St. Marks street, the location of this place is a huge pro. After a night of being productive, one street down you can get some dope food and drinks. Back to the Bean, it is huge! (this location, at least) I've always been able to find good seating near an outlet. Hours are great, as they stay open late (12a) most nights, and while not totally silent, it strikes a good balance of coffee shop chatter without being too noisy to not focus. My tea, the doctors orders, was spicy, flavorful and just what I needed while studying and fighting off a cold. Staff were friendly, and they've got gelato / good pastries / coffee. What more could you need?!

Walked by to grab a quick coffee. There were 3 girls working and no one acknowledged us until one was taking out the trash and told us she'd be right with us. Upon greeting us, no joke, she said "What do you guys want?" and she quickly realized what she said and then proceeded with "What can I get for you?" The other 2 girls were talking and were doing god knows what besides helping the one girl who took our order. My friend asked where the bathroom key was and one of the girls said "at the counter" Went there and didn't see it. So we asked the girl who took our order where the key was and she seemed so overwhelmed and frantic and said "Just give me a minute" I just wanted a quick coffee... not an attitude and a 10 minute delay on where the bathroom key was. Won't be back, even if i'm desperate for a late coffee. Side note: Skip the macaroons too. Super hard and stale.

Went here for the first time and had a great experience! Tons of room inside to sit and work which was exactly what I'd hoped! Got an iced coffee with oat milk and vanilla and it was great. Only disappointment was the price. Almost $6 for an iced coffee with milk and flavor, but I guess that's nyc!

Great location! They have a 10% student discount, free wifi, and plenty of spacious tables to get work done. The music isn't too bothering either, in fact it's on the quieter side. They have beautiful murals on the walls as well. The iced coffee wasn't mind blowing but still pretty good--not too bitter not too watered down. I'll be back soon!
