The Beer Hall - Review - Union Square - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The second location of The Beer Hall has the same extensive beer list as the original in Civic Center, with the addition of a full food menu including a a separate one for kids (which, yes, adults can order from if you’re envying your nephew’s chicken nuggets). You’ll find solid shareables like crispy rosti and roe and a giant pretzel with rarebit sauce, as well as the usual tavern staples. While we wouldn’t venture more than a BART stop or two for dinner here, we’d gladly make the trip to scream at whatever game’s on the TVs mounted above the bar. There’s plenty of long tables for big groups, roomy booths filled with families taking advantage of that kids menu, and as a bonus, they both can be booked ahead of time—you just need to call." - Patrick Wong

Brooklyn Food Hall Gotham Market Nixes Four of its Six Food Vendors | Eater NY

"To replace Mason Jar, Gotham has brought in Paul Longo, Kaelin Ballinger, and James Cruickshank to open a to-be-named modern American beer hall and kitchen in time for March Madness that will pour 15 to 20 craft beers on tap, serve high-end cocktails, offer lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, and focus on classic Americana and beer-hall fare such as homemade soft pretzels, nachos, wings and burgers." - Andrea Strong

Stopped into The Beer Hall while visiting San Francisco and was really impressed. The beer selection is excellent—any place with a saison on tap earns extra points in my book. The food was solid as well; I actually enjoyed the pretzel more than the burger, but I’d happily order both again. It was fairly quiet when I arrived, but people kept pouring in as the evening went on. The real standout was the bartender, Betsy. She was incredibly personable and attentive, keeping an eye on everyone without hovering. Wish I had discovered this spot sooner.

Excellent beer and food in a welcoming atmosphere! Was walking distance from my hotel so I found myself here many times throughout my week, sampling some great beers (many from Russian River, love it) and menu items (Drew’s wings, market salad, & new burger). Loved it all, really fresh ingredients & a ton of flavor, in a nice environment with friendly folks.

This is a great spot. My favourite bar when visiting SF was Mikkeller and I as soon as I walked in I knew the building I was in. The new owner has done an amazing job taking over this place with plenty of great beers on tap and the food is amazing. I had the chicken sandwich which was delicious and very substantial. I’m glad this familiar friend of mine is in great hands.

From the moment we walked into The Beer Hall, the vibes were on point—killer music, a lively yet chill atmosphere, and a space that just felt fun. But as good as the scene was, the food and drinks took things to a whole new level. We kicked things off with the Rösti & Roe—a dish layered with flavor. Creamy, minty, tangy—every bite was a little complex surprise that totally worked. Next up, the Pretzel & Welsh rarebit sauce, and let me tell you, that sauce blew us away. Rich beer cheese cooked down with mustard, served hot and fresh—it was bold, comforting, and impossible to stop dipping. We wrapped it up by sharing the Fried Chicken Sandwich, which hit the perfect balance of crisp and juicy. Fresh toppings (tomatoes, lettuce, pickles) and a zesty spread that was, quite literally, “French kiss” good. Service was also amazing. Randy was super helpful, answered all our menu questions, and offered great recommendations that totally delivered. Fair prices, solid pours, and food that punches above its weight—The Beer Hall nailed it. We’ll be back again…and again…and, yeah, again.

A nice new surprise in the neighborhood. Lots of interesting local beers on tap and some delicious bar type food, I had the fried chicken sandwich, delicious! Unfortunately for them it was not very busy on a Wednesday night, but the bartenders were very educated in their food / tap selections, and seemed happy to work there. Plenty of TVs too if sports is what you’re looking for. The owner was around, himself very personable too, and we had a nice chat about his product and desires for the space, as well as local beer of course! I found the quality, service levels, and atmosphere much more chill and to my adult liking than the Golden Gate Taproom (which is sometimes very crazy and not so much attention to details), a similar type venue in the same neighborhood. Just off market and close to many hotels for the travelers. I’ll definitely be back, I think this is my new “local”, when in town.

Traveling for work and needed a place to watch a hockey game. Got the burger and it was so damn good. Single patty, so nothing massive but such great flavor and just really solid. Wings were also amazing. Great selection of tap beers and an amazing selection of sours! Highly recommend!

Google
A classical "hole in the wall", a place which does not look like a lot, but after dinner there, you think it was a great place and you had good wine or good beer and good food. It it a beer house, you get beer, music, and good sandwiches and burgers. Good food, nice employees, attentive service, and reasonable for San Francisco downtown prices. Worth a visit if you are hungry.

Google
Fried chicken sandwich was over the top. On another day I had a legit pretzel that rivaled Germany! Great little find with great beer selections and phenomenal food! Music and wide screen TVs are a huge plus. Pop on in, you’ll like it!

Yelp
I showed up for the amazing craft beer selection, but was actually very pleasantly surprised by the food!! We got the pretzel and rarebit sauce to share, I got the mac and cheese, and my partner got the fried chicken sandwich. Pretzel and sauce was great, no notes. The mac and cheese was SO good. Really rich and creamy, not a dry, crumbly cheese noodle to be found. The fried chicken sandwich was huge and my partner gave it a rave review. If you're in the area doing some shopping or need a place to grab a drink and/or a bite before or after a show, come here!!!

Yelp
A warm but clean venue that serves beer but also really good food. Walking in the staff is already giving a warm-welcome to invite us to sit. The staff is actually excited to give recommendations to what their favorites are and honestly I barely looked at the menu because I'm already sold. First dish was the Rosti and Roe. 4 bite-sized portions that are beautifully serve. The texture is great but the flavor is a bit underwhelming. The creme fraiche overpowers most of the bite. It's not bad, but a little lacking in flavor. A touch more of salt would be great on the potato cakes. I think you can skip this one. Second dish was the Pretzel & Welsh Rabbit Sauce. A warm fresh pretzel with a sauce I never tried. I think if you never had it, it's worth a try! Leaves you wanting more and makes you feel more like in the bar vibe setting at a much nicer scale. Third dish was the Fried chicken sandwich. I can't really speak on this too much because I was splitting it and it became kind of a mush. I think I lost a lot of texture doing so but flavor wise was great! Truffle fries add-on came out great too, good crisp. Last dish we got was the pate with crostini chips. Very nice to get at a beer hall and really fun to eat. They come with a combination of toppings so it was fun to try different things I think this is worth getting once to try. I wish there were more crostini chips because we ended up with too much pate. All said, I think if you come here for food, you'll have a good time! I can't speak much on the beer since I don't really drink alcohol (stomach doesn't do well) :). Comfort feed with really fun and great service.

Yelp
Came on after a play, matinee show at 1pm. Was looking for a place before it started. Not many places around and didtopen until noon. Wish it opened early when shows are at the theater. Food was 7 out of 10. Beer selection was extrnsive - hence the name.

Yelp
Gathered here for a fun free watercolor event and it was such a treat! Was able to have some beers with a warm pretzel while doing some art. Cool little hole in the wall that I've been past a thousand times but didn't realize recognize it was there. Glad the event brought a new enjoyable beer hall to my list!

Yelp
Outstanding service, great beer choices with rotating taps, and tasty food to go with it. Discovered this place on 2nd night of business 1 week business trip and have already returned a second time. Betz, the bartender knows regulars by name and knows their preferences.

Yelp
The food is FANTASTIC. Small menu mostly focused on bar bites, they really hit it out of the park. The Rösti and Roe is out of this world. Little friend mashed potato pancakes with créme fraiche, peas and a generous serving of smoked Roe. The wings are phenomenal, just enough spice without being too much. Truffle fries, fantastic, the herb aioli with it, so good. Jhenifer took great care of us, and it's great to see the owner here connecting with people and checking on patrons.

Yelp
Food was really good. Beer was cold. The service was not great. Not saying it was horrible. The guy behind the bar was pleasant. The chef was appreciative of the business. The 2 missing stars are for the older lady that was there. She "acted" nice but just had this annoyed face like everything was just too overwhelming for her. It wasn't even busy. She just killed the vibe. She would smile and help someone then roll her eyes or make a face as she walked away. We were a pretty large party and trying to help the business by even going to the city in the first place. The guy bartender and chef that worked there was the only reason I still left 18%. All good we found a nice breakfast place next morning and service there was great.

Yelp
This place was awesome. Staff was super nice. Food came out fast. Burger was great. To top it off, it was a great place to watch sports

Ryan M.

Yelp
This place is phenomenal. I can't say enough about it. The food is amazing, the beers are fantastic, the TV is huge. Betsy is the best. Very knowledgeable about the menu. This is my new favorite place to watch a game and drink awesome beer. Try the burger, it's amazing.

Yelp
We came here being a show at The Warfield. It was the perfect stop for us. We ordered the chicken sandwich and the pretzel...both were amazing! The service was great. The manager/owner checked on us a couple of times...apparently they only opened 3 weeks ago. Definitely give this place a try! Great place for a relaxed drink and dinner.
