Where to Eat and Drink in Corvallis, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Opened during the pandemic, this book-lined space feels like a mix between a library and a European gastropub. Chef Travis Allen, an industry and U.S. military veteran, layers tomato and Andalouse sauce with savory meatballs and frites, drizzles bechamel over herbed crepes filled with ham and spinach, and fries potato-and-ale croquettes to order. In addition to board games, the restaurant carries a masterful selection of imported Belgian beers, as well as several craft beers from around Portland, Seattle, and California. It’s worth checking out the website for frequent events that range from drag brunches and book clubs to trivia nights. The Bière Library is currently open for indoor and outdoor (weather permitting) onsite dining, as well as takeout." - Mariah Botkin

Great spot to have a delicious meal! I had a salad that was on special today, so very yummy! The croquettes are so good, I wish we ordered two orders. Amazing beer selection, of course. Fantastic cocktail options too! Staff was super nice and made great recommendations when we were deciding on food. We plan to go back very soon.

Definitely surprised by there cuisines, especially brussel sprouts, which I highly recommended to order. Other foods are nice but a bit greasy and slaty. Their food was nearly a 5 star. However they have a serious issue of the their service. There are like 3 the parties including us to be waiting to be seated, and we have to wait 20 minutes to get helped, and the environment is kinda dusty. A lot of people just can’t wait and left, which is a bit pity since your food is delicious, but they won’t have the opportunity to try it. Hope you guys make some difference.

I was here for a farewell gathering on a Saturday night. We visited and played a game. I had a yummy crepe and a yummy adult beverage (A Midsummer Night's Bean, made with espresso). As the night wore on, it got quite noisy in there!

2024 update: Still a great place to be. The Petit Syrah Beer was a great blend between beer and wine. Great beer choices with knowledgeable staff. European food. The small bites were excellent. The Chicken Apple Brie Sandwich was ok since the Brie does not go with the chicken. The Ham Monsieur Buchamel Sandwich was good. I thought the bread was too thick and the meat taste did not quite come through. Croquettes,Frites and Brussel Sprouts were excellent. Paprika chips were spicy and tasted good even the next morning.

I was excited to try Belgian food at La Biere. The menu was appealing with great vegetarian options. The young waitresses were smiling. The patio in front of the Riverwalk was lovely. Then, the food arrived... I ordered a portobello opera, a crepe filled with the mushroom, spinach and cheese, usually a great combination. My crepe was cold, obviously made some other time, and had a scamp filling of a a congealed paste of mushroom pieces and cheese and a small heap of raw spinach. Yak! Of course, I did not eat it.

My boyfriend and I waited for almost 15 minutes to get seated. There weren’t many people but still no server came to greet us when we went in, and waited to get seated. A group of people left and told me that they waited for 25 minutes and no one came to serve them. While debating to leave, a server told us that she will get our table ready. Gladly, the food didn’t disappoint us. My very first try for brussels sprouts was amazing! I came here because my friends recommended me that brussels sprouts are really good here! I also love the soup and the baguette! however the ham sandwich was very salty and wouldn’t recommend it! paprika chips are delicious!

Google
Food was even more delicious than expected. Brussels sprouts were incredible, Chicken Brie sandwich and portobello mushroom crepe were top notch, even noteworthy to my European hubby who's a bit of a crepe connoisseur. Photo of sandwich is half, hunger got the best of be before snapping a shot.

Yelp
I ordered "call me bechamel". The sauce was congealed, not hot. The crepe was tough. I could have used a steak knife to get through the bottom. My sense of taste probably isn't the best, but the flavor of the dish was very bland. Maybe this is typical of this recipe.

Yelp
It's a perfect campus haunt. Loads of old books everywhere, a big open vibe, a great beer list, and we had German wine with. I had a croque monsieur with a side salad. Sweet place and the food & service was great!

Yelp
Our first time dining here, we arrived today at noon right as they were opening. I was a little skeptical, but the food, service, and atmosphere was just our style. Our server was attentive and really kind. The atmosphere was relaxed and had its charm. My partner and I don't drink but they had an amazing selection of beers! We ordered the frietes and beer cheese dip as an appetizer. Then their sweet potato crepe and meatballs. The side salad was delicious as it had a lemon and garlic vinaigrette (I love super garlicky flavors.) we would recommend and come back. Thank you!

Yelp
5 for the beer/cider/spirits menu and selection, 4 for the food - very good. But only a 3 for service - the food took forever to come out and the place was half full at best.

Yelp
The meatball sandwich! Hear me out. If, like me, you have meatballs filed in your brain under "nope," let me clear the path to a transcendent experience you'd otherwise walk right past. (Someone in my party ordered it, not me, of course.) First, let's call them carmelized bork spheres. Perfectly seasoned, mouthwatering beef and pork shaped into morsels sized to prevent lock-jaw. Whatever else goes on that sandwich to make meatballs and fries into an unlikely and rapturous combo must only be some kind of magic sauce. The brussel sprouts are my favorite standby for a meal-sized snack, and the croque monsieur is always a monstrous delight. Love the friendly, chill-out, stay-awhile ambiance and the clever menu (organized by chapters!) and cocktail names. Pro-tip: food is near the end of the "book" at The BIERE Library.

Yelp
Warning: super meat heavy. Otherwise, super cool place. Due to the Euro vibe, I expected the "CALL ME BECHAMEL CREPE" to contain 1-2 thinly sliced pieces of ham, and plenty cheese, herbs, and Bechamel, not jam packed and overly loaded with cubes of ham. So much (TOO MUCH !) ham, that's all I could taste, it was so salty, and I could not taste Bechamel (and was there cheese in there?). It was more like a couple servings of chopped ham with a little Bechamel mixed in, with a crepe wrapped around it. My taste buds were expecting and preferring something more delicate and balanced. And I had no idea from the menu description it would be so overly meaty-chunky. That visit was in early Sept. 2024. The visit previous was back in July. I had the Chicken Apple Brie sandwich, which I did like, yet again, maybe a little too meat heavy. The major pluses are the terrific selection of Euro and local beers, ciders, wines, and the environment is fun, funky, creative, and eclectic. I do recommend this place. But you might ask questions about the food 1st since the menu doesn't give a detailed description. I also hope their "CALL ME BECHAMEL CREPE" improves because it sounds really good in theory.

Yelp
My partner and I were really excited to try this place out. We were in line to be seated and when we were up the hostess skipped us entirely and attended to the group behind us. I advocated for us and the hostess told us we could go sit in the corner on two separate chairs. While in the corner, we noticed there was no table or a place for us to set down our drinks, let alone food that we were hoping to order. We were hungry so we thought we would figure it out when the time came. However, after 15 minutes of waiting for service we decided to leave. I'm giving it a couple of stars because the ambiance looked ok and the chairs were comfortable. I recommend adding a small table to that area if they plan on sitting people there. I am not sure if we will go back anytime soon though.

Yelp
Great spot for beer and food. Got the croque monsieur which was huge. A little too much mustard but very good. Salad was also delish. The Brussels sprouts are excellent and good selection of beer and ciders.

Yelp
My favorite place to go for a unique and yummy drink and snack. The theme is bookish in a playful way. Service is great.

Yelp
I ordered the meatball sandwich with a fancy name and it was not good. 3 skimmpy meatballs in a mountain of dough and semi-melted cheese covered in a slop of french fries to try and disguise the disappoiment. It was so bad I ordered a side of marinara sauce which took 10 minutes and came out cold. The Boulivederie beverage and the spotty service was not enough to cover for the poor meal. Add to that this place needs a good 2-3 day deep cleaning and the bar tenders could care less if you exsisted. I would not recommend.

Yelp
L O V E this place. We spend a couple hours here every time we're in Corvallis. Their food menu is better every time and I very much appreciate their huge beer list angled towards Belgian/European styles. I'm looking forward to visiting again this week!

Yelp
Extremely rude and hostile service. The server was not only judgemental regarding our order, but took back our last drink and kicked us out without refunding the drink that we paid for. 1. When asked what strong drinks on the menu she would recommend, she said that we shouldn't drink based on the alcohol content. She works at a bar where they serve strong cocktails and she wants us to be sober? She shouldn't work at a bar if she is going to be rude and hostile to customers asking for strong drink recommendations. 2. After checking our friend's ID multiple times, she proceeded to serve us all drinks. We had 4 drinks total between the 3 of us in an hour. However, when we ordered our last drink, she freaked out, accused our friend of having a fake ID, took her drink away and kicked us out without a refund. 3. First of all, they checked her state issued ID at least 2 times. If they believed that the ID was fake, they should have never served us drinks in the first place. However, she only took problem with my friend's ID after we had ordered 4 drinks already. Does that mean that she thought she was serving under aged person drinks this entire time? This makes no sense. 4. If they were uncomfortable serving our friend, they should have COMMUNICATED that instead of throwing a tantrum, taking our drink that we haven't even touched and kicking us out. At the minimum, they should have refunded us the drink that we had paid for but they took away. I have never been treated this poorly at any restaurant. Not only did they steal our money (paid for a drink that was never served), but they clearly disliked us the moment we sat down.

Yelp
First of all, what a great atmosphere! The lighting and colors are on point, the staff are the two owners and they are wonderfully equipped, seating is ample and great outdoor space. The selection of drinks are astonishing, with a revolving/evolving list of delicious mixed drinks and brews. The food however is the crème de la crème. We ordered the special waffle and chicken and the call me beschemel crepe. Both beautifully executed in taste and presentation. All in all a very special experience.

Yelp
We went here for happy hour based on some reviews here on Yelp. Big mistake! We should have known when we walked in and the place was silent (not empty, there were a few customers scattered around, just silent as in nobody was talking, chatting or laughing). We sat at the bar next to some super unfriendly dudes, and then spent the next 15 minutes being completely ignored. I mean, cold shoulder, "wish you weren't even here" ignored. Bartenders were behind the bar - literally three feet from me, but I felt like I was made of glass cos they looked right through me. I eventually had to wave my arms and beg for service as happy hour was about to end. We drank our beer, ate our sickly sweet brussels sprouts (kinda yuck) and hightailed it out of there to look for something more... happy. We dubbed the experience "service with a scowl."

Yelp
I almost didn't want to create a Yelp page for this place because I wanted to keep it a lowkey spot! But had to because I loved it so much. My partner and I came here recently for happy hour for drinks and Belgian frites. All the beers they had on tap were amazing - we really liked every single one we had. They tend to do more imported brews (with some local), and I can't say enough positive things about them. My partner really enjoyed the frites with the Andaluse sauce as well. We'll be back here a lot more!

Yelp
came during a visit to Corvallis and the staff were very cautious in making my food allergy safe (dairy-free). drinks and food were amazing! great atmosphere to enjoy a meal at!

Yelp
Service: mediocre. Food: way too fatty and salty. Clientele: mostly drunk college students.

Bonnie M.

Yelp
Went there early on a Saturday afternoon. We were the third couple there, but during the course of our leisurely lunch the place started to fill. My sister had the tartiflette which was amazing. I had the croque monsieur really delicious, it is so big, half went home to my husband. Drink selection was really nice, the waitress- bartender was super friendly and funny. Love the atmosphere and the menus are so funny to read. Have already planned to return next week with friends from out of town.

Yelp
Looking for a lunch stop while on a road trip. What a great find! Excellent food and beer. Very friendly staff. This will be our goto stop whenever we pass through Oregon. Very authentic Belgian dishes and a great selection of beers to pair.

Yelp
Such a wonderful place to enjoy a good beer where you aren't able to find elsewhere. The menus is well thought out and the items that have tried were delicious. I especially love the charcuterie board and crepes selection with fun literature inspired names.

Yelp
Terrible service, rude staff and overpriced mediocre food, I will not be coming back.

Michele C.

Yelp
Nice spot to visit with friends and family, with a huge selection of beer and good choice of food both small plates or a meal.

Yelp
Food was very good and something a little different. Service and space also warm and inviting. Best of all, not crowded. This restaurant is an undiscovered gem!

Yelp
They care about how they look than compared to have they cater to care about their community; Total typical. Their food is amazing, but they care so much about about their atmosphere that they lose sight of of their cuisine which is amazing. Good reading, but only about their own.

Yelp
Absolutely great experience! We were hesitant to try but the food was phenomenal and we were lucky to be served by one of the owners. So stoked for great local businesses and their 1 year anniversary thriving!

Mark S.

Yelp
Really enjoyed stopping by for a Trappist ale and some frites. Unique collection of specialty beers on tap and in bottles. Liked the frites, and the entire menu looks worth exploring on my next visit. Friendly and knowledgeable crew. Highly enjoyable experience.

Nathan M.

Yelp
Love the beer choices and the Croque Monsieur is amazing. Staff is friendly and the atmosphere is cozy.

Katie T.

Yelp
I love this place! The list of beers is insane and not even the pickiest beer drinker would be left without a drink to truly enjoy. The staff are very friendly and helpful and will be quick with a recommendation or several samples for those who aren't sure on their choice. In addition, the prices are reasonable and the food is actually quite good! If you're in DT corvallis, definitely check out this fun bar! The books and games scattered about can be fun and certainly add atmosphere

Riki A.

Yelp
I love this place. Food is very tasty, staff is wonderful and the beer selection is lengthy and unique. They also host a nice and relaxed trivia night certain mondays(?). Ambiance is really cool too. One of my favorite spots in town.

Peter J.

Yelp
A nice place to drink an interesting beer you wouldnt find anywhere else in town. Also one of the comfiest bars to sit at. Food's good too!

Nisha R.

Yelp
Aside from having the best Brussels sprouts I've ever had (so I can only imagine what the other food tastes like), the beer and the ambiance is so good! They have lots of board games to enjoy and the staff is so kind.
