7 Must-Try Sandwiches for Your Next Trip to Portugal

The 36 Best Restaurants in Lisbon, Portugal | Eater

"The bifana is Lisbon’s quintessential street food, consumed by the hundreds every day in the busiest neighborhoods in town. It is a simple sandwich with thin slices of fried pork shank (the best venues fry the meat in pork fat) stuffed into a crusty roll. To enhance the flavors, some places add a good amount of mustard poured straight from the squeeze bottle or a few drops of piri piri (hot sauce). Bifanas do Afonso, on the famously steep Rua da Madalena, is one of the most popular venues for the egalitarian delicacy. Long queues are undeniable proof of the quality of the sought-after sandwiches, which have been served there for over 40 years." - Rafael Tonon

As Bifanas do Afonso – Lisbon, Portugal - Gastro Obscura

"The people of Portugal love a sandwich, and one of the country’s most beloved is the bifana. Taking the form of slices of pork served in a roll, in Lisbon that protein is typically grilled, but somewhat confusingly, the city’s most popular bifana is done in the northern style. You don’t need Google Maps to know if you’ve arrived at As Bifanas do Afonso; look for the perpetual line or simply follow the aroma of porky broth that extends down the block. Your destination is essentially a stall, which specializes in one dish: thin slices of pork, braised in a mix of white wine, garlic, bay leaf, and lard (and, it’s said, Sprite), stuffed in a chewy Portuguese-style roll. Boost your bifana via a squirt of sweet, cheap mustard or a drizzle of house-made chili oil, and pair it with a glass of vinho à pressão, “tap wine,” made sweet with the addition of sugar and bubbly via carbonation. It’s simple, cheap, casual and utterly delicious. Know Before You Go There are no tables at Bifanas do Afonso, but the two streetside letterboxes near the stall can serve the same purpose." - rbenn250, Collector of Experiences, anastasiiapugach, Austin Bush

Google
While researching I came across this place and it certainly did not disappoint. We weren’t extremely hungry so we just ordered one Bifana and one chocolate mousse. Around 5 pm was when we went and there was a very small line. I’d recommend going in between meal times to take advantage of the shorter wait times. It completely lived up to my expectations, and I would definitely return. The bifana itself had perfect chewy bread and with the meat it was heaven. The chocolate mousse was also delicious, and it was super light but not too sweet. I would definitely return!

Google
I don't think I would ever tire of eating bifanas. If you love it a much as I do, this little shop is probably one of the better places in town to try it. The moment you enter, you smell the aroma of the pork stew bubbling away in the corner. Ordering is quick and the prep time for each bifana is equally swift. On site dining is strictly counter top both within and along the outside wall, but the popular option is to sit on nearby benches in the small adjacent plaza where you can enjoy both your bifana and Lisbon's wonderful weather. Underneath the crispy bun exterior is a soft bouncy interior with plenty of air pockets that are perfect for soaking up the drippings from the pork chunks. The pork itself is quite lean with a faint garlic and herb aroma. A very tasty and filing 4.5 stars

Google
It's just a window you order from. I waited in line for about 30 minutes and it was well worth the hype! The pork was so tender and the bun so soft! Definitely go there and order the bifana. It's only €5!

Google
If you are lisbon you have to try bifanas of Afonso. Here the pork is simmered in a rich seasoning which is than put into a nice rustic bread roll and you can then add mustard and vinegar to it to your liking. The space is very small so usually there will be a line forming but if you come early than that wouldn’t be a problem. The original bifana cost 3€ but they also do a cheese version for 5€ but in my opinion better stick to the original. The pork was nicely seasoned and the bread was soft inside and had a crunchy outside. Overall it’s a nice quick and cheap snack and definitely worth a try.

Google
Probably the most famous sandwich shop in all of Portugal! We waited in line for an hour but it was worth it. The menu is modest. A few sandwiches and 2 desserts. Of course, we got the famous Bifana but also ordered a chocolate mousse. The Bifana was fabulous... slow cooked pork that is stewed for hours in a sauce filled with local spices (see video). The Pao (bread) is loaded with mounds of pork. You must add the mustard and chilli oil for a traditional Portuguese flavor. Fresh Pao, zesty and juicy meat on a sandwich is hard to beat! The mousse was average but was a nice finish after the spicy sandwich. Definitely a must do in Lisbon!

Google
I was on the hunt for a traditional bifana, and all my research pointed to this spot. I went early in the day and luckily avoided the usual queue. The sandwich is great value—super filling and very affordable. The pork was juicy, and the bread had a nice texture, but personally, I found it a bit lacking in flavor (though that might be because I didn’t add any sauce—worth keeping in mind). Tip: The place is cash only, so come prepared!

Charis Koh

Google
We came early (9ish) so there was no queue. Sandwich was flavourful and bread was good. But definitely need to add the sauce if not if will be too dry. Worth to try!

Cori Harper

Google
Cash only. Pork sandwiches for 3 euro. Well worth the wait. They have toast beef, desserts, and drinks. They do not have tables, it is take and go. Excellent. Soft bread. Spicy sauce is very good.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick bite of Portugal's iconic pork sandwich. This spot is popular for many reasons. 1) it's relatively cheap (€3-6). 2) it's delicious (check out the lines and those eating around the stall). 3) it's different (most are served fried but cold, here it is sautéed and warm). The only downside is that there's no seating - but I guess their savings is passed on to the customer in terms of cheaper pricing! It was busy up until closing at 630pm when I tried it, and that's during the non-touristy season! Final note: this place is cash only!

Yelp
I'd heard so much buzz about this place and their legendary bifana, so I knew I had to check it out for myself. I made a beeline straight for their famous pork bifana, and let me tell you, it absolutely lived up to the hype! It was everything I'd hoped for and more - the pork was incredibly tender and flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and nestled in a delicious, crusty roll. It was so good, in fact, that we were tempted to try another bifana. That's where things got a little interesting. We decided to sample some of their other bifana options, and while they weren't bad, they just didn't come close to the magic of the original pork bifana. It was a clear reminder that sometimes, sticking with the classics is the best way to go. So, my advice? If you go, definitely get the famous pork bifana. It's worth every single rave review. Seriously, it's that good. My only other tip: bring cash, as they prefer it. While I can't speak for their other offerings, that pork bifana is a must-try, and you won't be disappointed! Just stick with the original and you'll be in bifana heaven.

Yelp
We stopped by for lunch and the line was very long but moved quickly. The prices are very reasonable and my bifanas with cheese and lots of their chili oil was delicious. They're cash only. It's just an ordering window so there isn't really a place to sit and eat but it's adjacent to a square so a bunch of people were loitering and eating their food off of ledges or sills or really anything else they could find. The service is super speedy.
google avatar

Yelp
I have a hard and fast rule where I always stop at a food stand if there's: 1. A line. 2. Meaty sandwiches being served. Personally, I'm an ignorant American that thought "bifanas" was going to be beef, but I was not sad when I found out it was actually delicious, tender pork that was stewed in white wine and spices, slapped on a fresh roll, and handed to me for the amazing price of 3 euro (an extra 1.50 will get you some cheese). They have both mustard and chili oil available for slathering, and I recommend both. The guys behind the counter are no nonsense, and they are just trying to get through the line. There's no seating at the stand, but luckily, you're in the middle of a nice little square that's perfect for eating and drinking the beer that goes so well with the bifana. If you find yourself in the 'hood, you should absolutely stop and get a sandwich.

Yelp
This spot is great for a quick bite to eat but keep in mind - cash only! The line gets pretty long. We got there around 3p in the afternoon. This was the second best bifana we had in Portugal but still really good! The prices are super cheap as well. A "big beer" is a typical pint that we're used to so I would go with that option, especially if you're thirsty. You order at the window and eat the sandwich on the street. I topped my bifana with a hefty dose of chili oil because I just felt like the mustard took away a lot of the flavor of the sandwich. I would recommend stopping by!

Yelp
Note: cash only One of my friends had recommended this place while I was in Lisbon, so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, there was a long line of folks waiting on a Friday afternoon at 1:15 pm, but we still got in. It ended up being around a 40 minute wait from start to when we ordered, which is much longer than I would've wanted to wait, but oh well. At least the sandwiches came out quickly after we ordered. The menu is super straightforward. They're known for their bifanas, which is a pork sandwich, but they have some other options as well. I got a bifana for only 3€, and my friend got the chicken sandwich plus a beer for 6.70€. That's not bad at all! The only annoying thing is that it's a takeout only spot with no seating. They have some counters right outside where you can stand and eat, but we opted to eat at the benches in the same plaza. I thought the bifana was good but not amazing. I think you're supposed to add other condiments on top like mustard or hot sauce, but I'm not a condiments kinda gal and ate it plain with just the bread and meat. The pork was very flavorful but the texture was a bit off for me. Still, I'm glad I tried a bifana while I was in Portugal.

Lisa T.

Yelp
Pass this place several times and it always had a line. I finally got their Bifana sandwich and tried their Green soup. The gentleman told me to just get without cheese (traditionally eaten without cheese). They had mustard and a chili sauce if you want to put in the sandwich. Sandwiches is very good and inexpensive. Less than 5 euros for the sandwich and sopa

Yelp
Excellent breakfast! I had the famous Portuguese Bifana Sandwich. It is thin slices of pork marinated and simmered in white wine, garlic and paprika served on a fantastic roll. This place gets busy so opted to get this for breakfast which worked great. Highly recommend. So glad that I had this sandwich. Memorable.
google avatar

Lis Z.

Yelp
Delicious meat sandwich. They prepared the meat in the white wine for 24 hours, so the sandwich tastes so savory. It's a street food so there is no seating. But the servers are very nice people.
google avatar

Wellington C.

Yelp
So while on a food tour we passed by this place and the guide said that this was a popular spot for a traditional bifanas. So before we left Lisbon I had to grab a sandwich for breakfast which is a common thing. The sandwich is just all pork simmered in a wine and garlic sauce very similar to a traditional Chinese sauce which I make at home all the time. For $3 euro it's a good cheap eat. Honestly I would prefer this over an egg McMuffin any day. In the mornings there isn't much of a line but if you come in the afternoon the piazza can be filled with people looking to grab one of these pork sandwiches.
google avatar

Yelp
So good we went back TWICE during our trip. Big thing to remember is that they're cash only! And expect a long line if you go during peak hours. Food: I tried both the bifana with and without cheese. I preferred it without cheese. Let the simple ingredients do the talking. It also really does pair great with a beer so I would suggest getting one! Location: I would plan to grab your food and eat it at a local nearby park. Not much seating and the tables right outside are for the stand next door so the ambiance can be a little stressful if eating there. Worth the hype

Yelp
This is one of those local gems and a must try when you're in Lisbon. Have you heard of Strictly Dumpling? I was watching Mikey Chen's Lisbon video, and he tried the bifanas here. This was worth the hike up the street. The sandwich was surprisingly tasty with the mustard and chili oil. Wash it down with some draft beer that's less than 2€\glass. This place is a nice breakfast option because it's not too filling and not sweet. I wanted to try the cod fritter, but they don't do that in the morning. It's just a small shop, so there were no bathrooms. Cash only!!
google avatar

Krystle C.

Yelp
Soft bread, juicy beef, fast and friendly service. Went during fall and there was no line.
google avatar

Donny P.

Yelp
A must in Lisbon! The wait and hype is real! My friend had told me about this place and how he went 2x and braved the long lines. I waited for close to 45 miutes. The pork sandwich w/ beer is a common snack or meal in Lisbon. This place is one of the best at making it. Fresh and juicy hot pork on bread. No sauce or cheese really needed. Maybe small dab of mustard? Very inexpensive and worth every euro! There are some benches nearby but everyone just stands around and gulf down their sandwich!
google avatar

Neha M.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this spot but it was okay. I definitely waited in line for a while for it so I was hoping to have a delicious lunch. I decided on the one with cheese which did make it better. Ofc I added mustard. It was just okay. The staff is super friendly and the service is as quick as they can. It's a two person gig But still try it out. Maybe bifanas are just not for me.

Yelp
Saw a YouTube video of a guy recommending this place before our Lisbon trip. Husband and I thought we should try it out. This place is very popular and we waited in a long line but it went by fairly quickly even though it's a small establishment. We waited about 30-40 mins. It is a must try at least once. We got the bifana with cheese and it was for 4.50 euros. Boy, do I love soft cheese. It really made the sandwich better. Make sure to put mustard and the chili oil! It will enhance the sandwich as it does not have any veggies. It's just meat, cheese and bread. The seating area was crowded and taken so we decided to walk down to the water and eat it. The sandwich was piping hot and the meat was tender and no fatty meat. We had tried a bifana at a different location and it had fatty meat that the hubby does not like. I don't mind fatty parts. Husband said he wouldn't wait in line again for it a second time but I would.

Stephanie M.

Yelp
We came here for breakfast and there was no line (when we passed by during lunch the line was SUPER LONG - so remember that). The pork stew sandwich (2.5) was so satisfying. They make it fresh right in front of you. The meat is stewing away in a pot and it's just delicious. It's just Portuguese bun and pork but it's addictive. Usually pork can be pretty dry but this wasn't dry at all. The chewiness of the bread and the tenderness of the pork went so well together. They have mustard on the table - remember to add some because it brings it up to a whole other level. I wanted to try their fried fish cake but I think they only serve it during lunch. I would definitely recommend this place. Tip: get lots of napkins because you'll need it when the juices start dripping down your arm
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Hands down, best snack in Lisbon. We got these bifanas 3 times in two days LOL Super cheap, super flavorful, and super simple. For 2,70€, you can get a sandwich with marinated pork which is the traditional bifana. You NEED to put mustard and chili oil on it too. As I write this, I'm drooling and wish I could get another one
google avatar

Jacqueline D.

Yelp
I wanted to try this spot as it was all over websites, a very discreet place on the corner...make sure you don't make the mistake I did and wait at the window to order. Once inside it's simple, just order they'll make it, you pay (cash only) and you eat outside. The mustard and oil are a must! They were generous with the amount of pork they give, although the bread wasn't as soft as O Trevo. No complaints for €3!
google avatar

Sam H.

Yelp
Yummy. Pork was tender and the seasoning was superb. The roll absorbed some of the sauce and was great. I don't know what the liquid sauce I added, but it was a slow burn in spice. Quick service and incredibly reasonable in price. The shrimp pie I had was also delicious. Crispy exterior and flavorful sauce with shrimp. It tasted shrimpy in the best way possible.

Yelp
One of the things that we prioritize when traveling overseas is learning about the food and culture. Therefore, at the top of our itinerary when we arrived in Lisbon, was to go on a food and wine tour. Our third stop on the tour led us to As Bifanas do Afonso. Our tour guide ordered everyone on the tour a Bifana with a beer on the side (that should be made into a jingle!). The tour guide explained that Bifanas consists of slices of pork that are marinated with white wine and garlic. When the Bifanas arrived at our table, I have to respectfully admit, they looked bare. However, the key that unlocked the deliciousness of the sandwich was within arm reach on the table....piri-piri sauce! If you have not experienced the goodness of a Bifana or Chicken + piri-piri sauce, I highly recommend that you try it! Unfortunately, I cannot speak to the customer service of this establishment because our tour guide handled the transaction that secured the Bifanas and beer. However, I can speak to their delicious Bifanas!

Yelp
Deal of the day: 2 great tasting bifanas + 1 small beer = 6.70 euros! After looking around for a budget friendly, simple place to have a quick brunch, we stumbled upon this place. It is quite popular and there was a queue but it moved reasonably quickly. There were 2 groups in front of us, and we waited for about 10 min to get to the front and get our food, but was totally worth it. Bifanas is a sandwich with slow cooked seasoned pork...you put a bit of yellow mustard and chili water, and it's great! Also went great with a small beer to wash it all down, even though it was still 11 am! ;) No need to eat fancy all the time, and sometimes finding these local, hole-in-the-wall places are the best!

Yelp
Pork Sandwich Portuguese cuisine is known for many things including their Portuguese egg tarts but my favorite is finding where to eat bifana or the traditional pork slice sandwich One of the most popular spots in Portugal for bifanas is As Bifanas do Afonso It's a small spot with long queues and while it's accepted credit cards in the past, today it was cash only The wait is about 30 minutes and while the nearby seating is from another restaurant they are happy to serve you drink and snacks while you wait for your sandwich I tried the bifana with and without cheese but preferred it most without Either way, the key is plenty of chili oil and plenty of mustard to accentuate and enhance the well seasoned pork and soft bread Bifana €2,7 / Bifana com Queijo €3,8 As Bifanas do Afonso (Lisbon, Portugal) Seating is public seating outdoor only and payment is cash only.
google avatar

Wei Z.

Yelp
The food is great, and I suggest adding mustard and spicy oil for your bifana. Service is fairly fast, and you have to eat at the small bar outside. This is a hole in the wall restaurant, but it is very good!
google avatar

Estebam F.

Yelp
The food was so good and the service was awesome. It was one of my favorite meals on my vacation.
google avatar

Chelsea Y.

Yelp
This totally felt like a local, secret, hole in the wall that sadly for locals the secret is now out to the rest of us. A really good, classic bifana. A can't-skip if you're visiting. Be prepared to wait but the wait is so worth it!!!
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
Amazing value and taste! Friends and I got 3 bifanas for ~8 Euros and they came out within minutes. Wish I tried the Bifanas with cheese, but the hot sauce and mustard were enough to give it a kick too! Portugal is such a vibe and this place is a must visit for a classic Bifana outside. There's even a nice big bench out front to sit and enjoy your food.
google avatar

Phylicia H.

Yelp
Tried the famous Bifana and it did not disappoint. Out of everything my bf and I ate on our trip to Portugal, he said this may have been #1. Way better than the other spots that sell this. It gets very busy with long lines, but moves fast. Cash only and no tables/chairs. Sit on a bench near the tree, steps or stand. Do not forget to put the mustard and piri piri sauce to enhance it!
google avatar

Derek L.

Yelp
For 2.5 euros, you can get a small sandwich that's a staple of Portuguese cuisine. The bifanas is a stewed pork sandwich with no frills. Simply go to the counter and make sure to look for the menu off to the side. It's hidden, which is kind of a pain if you're not local and don't know what to get. Lucky for you, I took a picture of the menu and posted it. I believe this place still remains cash only so make sure you've got some cash on hand. I stopped by an atm during my visit to the Castelo de Sao Jorge to prep for this. Exchange rate was 1.12 USD to 1 Euro and at the ATM I went to, I still had the 3% transaction fee. Just as a note I don't think you really need that much cash in Portugal since most places accept card so the so-so rates were fine by me. People tend to eat at the counter or at the plaza the little counter faces. Just make sure to get the mustard and some piri piri (hot chili oil) as needed. Also a good idea to pair this with some beer. Taste wise the bread was soft with ample flour on the outside. The pork was too salty for me so I wasn't a huge fan of this. Nevertheless it's cheap and there are other things on the menu if you don't like plain pork between bread. Wouldn't get again if I didn't have to, but if I needed something cheap, this is fine.
google avatar

Billy T.

Yelp
If there's a line, it's definitely worth the wait. I recommend getting take-out, because this place is about as big as my bedroom (but gets infinitely more action). Arguably the best food I've had in portugal was their bifana. It was that good. The combo of mustard and chili sauce perfectly combined with the pork inside. The pork was super tender and seasoned extremely well and the bread complemented the other ingredients perfectly. The hype is real.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Yup soooo good and cheap. But it's all to go so be prepared. Even had the soup, super tasty.
google avatar

Silvio D.

Yelp
Best bifanas in Lisbon. It's a small space and you have to wait in line, but the line moves quickly. Definitely worth the trip.
google avatar

Don K.

Yelp
fast and friendly service. If you sit down, the Bifana isn't on the menu, but you can request it. On the stand up counter, it's standard to just order a bifana. The plates that include french fries are a great value. The pork belly dish was very flavorful.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Best bifanas in Lisbon! The other places don't even compare. We tried eating here as much as possible. The bread and meat is cooked so perfectly. You can tell it's a good spot since the locals come here. Prices are great. But it can get busy. Thankfully the staff are very swift so it keeps it moving. Be sure to try out the spicy oil and mustard!
google avatar

Edward S.

Yelp
As Bifanas do Afonso has an amazing bifana sandwich. In a tiny corner location, the kitchen is a small area on the other side of the counter. Ask the man tending the bubbling pot for a bifana and a double espresso. The other side of the counter is a limited capacity eating area countertop that is standing room only for about just four people. Crusty bread with sliced pork stewed in pork gravy. Simplicity is rewarding sometimes. The pork has strong pork flavor from basting in its own juices. One sandwich is almost not quite enough. There are bottles of sweet mustard or spicy oil that you can squeeze onto the sandwich. The espresso is served in a little coffee cup on a saucer with a packet of sugar. This is a great way to start a morning.
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
Glad we stopped here for Bifanas. They're so cheap (2,70€ each) and you get delicious pork on fresh fluffy bread. I'd add a generous squirt of mustard for more flavor and some of the spicy oil. A big enough sandwich to serve as a quick meal or a big snack. No seating inside and only two counters outside for maybe 4 people at most to stand and eat so plan to take the sandwiches elsewhere (there is a park bench around a tree next to the place). Grab a cheap beer too! Easy enough to order without knowing Spanish, not sure how much English they spoke but minimal words were exchanged.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
Tried to go closer to closing, but they were already closed when I arrived! Tried a second time on a foodie tour and made it! We had the typical Bifana with a beer. The sandwich is good - pork and bread. It's simple, it's flavorful, and it's fast. A staple in Portuguese food.

Susan M.

Yelp
Our local tour guide recommended this place for a Bifana. He told us it was delicious and we must try it. He told us to use the door on the right side of the building so we don't have to stand in a long line. We followed his recommendation and went there the next day. We were treated very poorly and the owner refused to serve us because we were not locals. The look on his face was (go away you stupid American) we left and will never give $ to a place like that! It's a terrible feeling to not be served because we were not locals. I hope this helps and no one ever feels like they can't enjoy a recommended dish just because we were tourists.
google avatar

Yelp
We stumbled upon the famous Bifanas and it did not disappoint! The line took about 20 minutes, and would occasionally have to break apart to let taxis through before re-forming again. Don't expect any seats to be available to eat upon either - I mistakenly sat at some of the chairs and tables a few feet away from the façade of the restaurant and found out after a few minutes it was for patrons of the cafe around the corner, just out of sight. The bifanas were very simple, but had something special about them. The bread texture is on the softer side between toasted crunchy and untoasted soft, and worked very well with the pork. We added some mustard and spicy sauce to ours, which imho enhanced the flavor. Order a beer to wash it down. Dirt cheap, and probably one of the best quick meals in Lisbon. A must visit.
google avatar

Irina K.

Yelp
We have tried several Bifana places in Portugal & this one was our favorite. I am not sure if it's because it was our 1st one, or because we had to earn the food by walking up the hill or maybe because it was recommended by a local....Nevertheless we absolutely loved it. Amazing value, super juicy & flavorful. It was gone so fast that I didnt even have a chance to take a photo! What a treat.
google avatar

Naomi D.

Yelp
Quick service through a small window outside. Yes it's a touristy place to eat but that doesn't diminish that the sandwiches are delicious and super affordable. Get 2. Wish this place was open late because it would be ideal to grab som big ana's after a night out.

P A.

Yelp
The most amazing bifana. I would recommend to anyone who comes to Lisbon. Delicious!! You cannot beat the price. If you see a long line do not be discouraged. It moves very fast. Cash only so be prepared. Going back tomorrow for breakfast and possibly lunch.
google avatar

Marada C.

Yelp
Simple and delicious. Standing room only and some public seating, but honestly this place hits. I've only gotten the bifanas e quiejo but it's all I need. If you're hungry, want something quick, this is the place to go! Flavor was delicious as well, not too spicy, well seasoned pork, soft yet chewy bread.
google avatar

Melissa F.

Yelp
Sooo good and inexpensive. Get ready to wait, long line but so worth it. We got the pork bifana with a little bit of peri peri sauce.
google avatar

Charles A.

Yelp
This place has the best bifana I've ever had ever! They are quick and friendly and was all it was said to be. There was a bit of a lunch rush but it was still fast.

Yelp
Nothing so far in Lisbon has compared to the marinade and flavor explosion of this extremely simply yet oh so delicious comfort food of the Portugal people and their capital, Lisbon! I will never forget this traditional snack.

Yelp
Recommended from a reddit Lisbon thread and we saw lots of locals when we walked by this place everyday as it was near our Airbnb. It's a small mom and pop kind of shop (cash only) and offers little standing room inside. The bifanas were good alone but even better with the chili oil and mustard. The bread was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside making it a perfect sponge to soak in the condiments. The meat is fresh. You can see them cook it in front of you and pull it out of the pot when they make your sandwich. The prices were also very fair. You can't ask for much more from a hole-in-the-wall place like this. The staff was incredibly friendly to us. We even made friends with the man behind the counter but forgot to ask for his name :(

Yelp
So I heard I needed to try bifanas in Lisbon. I had my doubts and pictures I've seen didn't make them seem too great. But boy was I wrong. As Bifanas do Afonso was freaking amazing. Didn't think the meat could be so tender and juicy and the bread complemented perfectly.
