Ridiculous & Unprofessional: Our family came on a late Friday morning (7/20/18) when there was plenty of space for 8 adults and 8 kids. We decided to sit outside because the weather was nice and we didn't want to disturb anyone inside with our large group. We are conscientious people that appreciate warm and welcoming service. It seemed like an issue from the moment we arrived. After waiting 10 minutes to get drink orders (basically coffee, juice, and water) some lady came out in a very confrontational way and started to ask us if we were together or on separate checks. I assume she was a manager because she was not the original person to greet us and start table service. She instructed us to tell the server if lwe were on separate checks. This person then decided to tell me that my 3 year old son would ruin her precious salt shaker if he didn't stop shaking it into a glass of water. Look, I obviously don't want him doing that at a restaurant, but I couldn't exactly pay attention to his every move if the manager comes blasting out to dictate the rules of engagement at the Birchwood Cafe. I told her I would take care of the salt shaker as I took it from my son. He then started shaking the pepper into the glass of water. This lady then yelled "HEY!" directly at my son in an attempt to get him to stop. I'm a very patient and empathetic person when it comes to most situations, however, this was one thing I could not let slide. I told her that she could never speak to one of my kids that way, and if she continued we would leave. She then began to argue with me about what she said and then murmured something about how parenting was needed. I then quietly gathered my family and we decided to spend our money elsewhere. If you work in the restaurant/service industry, then you expect the occasional large group with children. You also expect to have to empty and clean the salt shakers once in a while. They gave up at least $120 plus a good tip for the server, over salt and pepper shakers that cost almost nothing to empty, clean, and refill. Our family has been eating there for years every summer. It's safe to say we will never spend another dime at the Birchwood Cafe, unless there's a change in ownership. UNFORGIVABLE.
