The Black Sheep Pub & Restaurant Review - Rittenhouse - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Just like how many generations will never know the pain of a scratched CD, or blowing in an old game cartridge, people passing through 17th and Locust will never know what it’s like to not have a go-to Irish pub. And if walking into this bar makes you feel at home, it’s because it used to be a three-level townhouse. It’s a great place for a laid-back pint, a round of darts, and sharing a few orders of their crispy fish and chips." - Candis R. McLean

The woman behind the bar was friendly and fast. The food was good and had big portions. The atmosphere was great except that it was extremely loud. It is a bar, so perhaps expected. We also had two very loud talkers/laughers there when we were there, so the noise level may vary depending on the clientele. At any rate, it was a cozy neighborhood bar/restaurant.

Google
Best pub in the city. Better crowd and great staff and service. They have three floors. Quiz night. The service is impeccable. Shamrock on 90% of Guinness. Just had the fish and chips. Best beer bartered fish. Only thing away from perfect was fresh French fries. Not even PARC does this anymore. Black sheep = Value + great atmosphere + great customer service = Best Bar and Pub in Philadelphia. They fill up, so don’t be mad if you didn’t come early enough on the weekends. It is definitely not child friendly at night.

I got this take away and for take away it was good. The fries were delicious and the fish was cooked to perfection. I will have to try this hot and fresh at the restaurant! Will be back!

I recently had a private party for about 60 guests at the Black Sheep. Everything went super well and my guests and I were very happy. The managers that we worked with, James and Jon, were very accommodating and helped me to customize everything to make the party exactly what I wanted. The pricing was reasonable, and the food, drinks, and service were great. I would highly recommend throwing a party here!

The Black Sheep is everything you want in a classic Irish pub—welcoming, cozy, and effortlessly charming. It’s my go-to spot on Saturdays for a few pints of Guinness while watching soccer, and it never disappoints. The bartenders are knowledgeable, friendly, and experienced, making every visit feel easy and enjoyable. The jukebox plays great tunes, adding to the laid-back atmosphere. You can tell the owner puts his heart and soul into the place—he’s often there, which I really appreciate. It’s a no-frills, reliable watering hole with fair pricing for the area—something I truly value. Seating is well thought out, with a mix of bar seats, high tops, and low tables to accommodate groups of all sizes. The big windows let in great natural light, making it feel more inviting than other darker bars in the city. On nice days, they open the front windows and have a sidewalk counter, making it a great spot to enjoy a drink while people-watching. While I haven’t explored the full menu, people always eat around me. The bar downstairs looks like a fun option for private gatherings, and I believe there’s another bar upstairs, though I haven’t made it up yet. The Black Sheep is a true neighborhood pub—welcoming, no-fuss, and always a great spot to catch up with friends or take a break during a day in Center City. I’ll keep coming back!

Google
Cool spot . Stop them here after a comedy show. I want to see Steve-O. The upstairs area was pretty packed. The downstairs was quite more relaxed. Slower paced environmend down there compared to the upstairs . There may have been 3 stories not sure . First time . I'll def stop back sometime.

Classics are classics because they know how to do things correctly. The beer selection, while not the largest, had some really nice options. The menu is simple, lamb chops as a starter, shepherds pie and a good pint, served with a smile at a fair price. Enjoy! P.S. the French fries are also worth having.

Google
I visited for dinner several months ago and then was part of hosting a large group for a private event list Wednesday night. Everybody in the group raved about the food, both in terms of quality and the timeliness of the service. This included various appetizers, for which the lamb chops were absolutely a hit, as well as the dinner. Even the dessert was good. The drink selections were terrific and the Irish coffee was wonderful.

Yelp
While I ate too quickly both times ordering food here to take pictures, I am very impressed by the shepherd's pie and bangers and mash. The cheesesteak spring rolls were a tasty appetiser as well. Staff is generally agreeable and the guy working the bar while also handling tables kept up with pub getting busier well. Generally confident that regardless of what I were to order from the menu, everything would come out as expected and delicious. The inside matches what one should expect from a pub, generously adorned with wood and warm colors for the wall, complete with some celtic inspired stained glass windows above the normal ones--I'm reminded of my pub experiences in Ireland, minus the accents and currency used. Whenever I find myself in this area of Philadelphia again, I will be returning, on top encouraging others to come to this establishment.

Yelp
I came here on St. Patty's weekend for a couple of drinks and we did not stay long. It was quite crowded and felt like a college bar. We were hungry and were not interested in the loud atmosphere while we ate, so we left. While we were there, we had 2 drinks. I drank the Pinot noir and it was fine. The service was decent, but nothing magical. I probably won't be returning.

Yelp
Great beer selection and fantastic comfort food! The staff are amazing and friendly. This pub is filled with locals and tourists. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Had a quick dinner here. I had the fish and chips and it was really good. I don't recall what my wife has but she also enjoyed it. Beer was good as well.

Yelp
After doing some touristy things on a Saturday, we were walking around Center City looking for a place to grab a few drinks and stumbled upon The Black Sheep. The downstairs bar was full, but we headed upstairs and found two stools at the bar. Great vibe overall - tap beers were solid and a nice pour for my wife's vodka and sodas. The bartender was friendly. Definitely a good find if you're in the area.

Yelp
I met a group for a drink here - they ended up having to rush out for their dinner, so I stayed to finish my drink and was planning to meet some other friends here. I tried to get the waitresses attention so I could order something else, but before I was able to, another lady (maybe the manager?) came over, slammed her hand on the table, and said "I need this table." Ok... I told her I was waiting for my friends (who were on the way). She responded "are you sure" and then told me I would need to move to a different table if there was going to be 5 of us (there were already 5 stools at this table so I'm not sure how that made a difference but ok?). Ended up leaving to go to one of the many other bars in the area (which are all great). Of note - I tried to have a birthday party here once, and after confirming they later called to cancel because they were overbooked. A little unprofessional imo. Anyways, it's a shame because this place is in a great spot and can be fun but the service needs to chill.

Yelp
I went Black Sheep recently for dinner with three friends who were visiting from out of town. I didn't know anything about the place before going, but two from our group had been there and liked it. It's a pub! It was crowded, especially for a Monday night, and I think they were shortstaffed, so this review can be somewhat understandable...not good! Atmosphere 2/5 Being a pub, the decor is what you would expect, a little dark and dingy, and there were a lot of tables and not a lot of space. And of course the noise level was high. Not a place to go to for an intimate chat with friends. Food 2/5 Again, it could just have been the night, but the food was not good at all. I had a cheeseburger, which was fine, and one friend had Caesar salad, I believe, which he liked, too. Another friend ordered the fish and chips, and they were gigantic, biggest fish sticks I've ever seen! They filled the length of the oval plate they were served on. She said it was all batter and very little fish. Disappointed. My other friend ordered garlic, french fries, which looked greasy and very undercooked. It's a shame, because usually pubs like these have good grub. Service 2/5 I mentioned above that they seemed shortstaffed. We had a waitress, who was clearly overwhelmed, and wasn't able to keep up with her customers, including us. Inattentive is how I would put it. The bartender eventually jumped in to help, which was nice. He was friendly and took care of us to the end of our evening. Overall, 2 out of 5 stars!

Yelp
My mother and I have tried to go here twice after hearing great things about their food. However both times we were turned away rudely by the lady at the front door. These were both on weekdays before 5pm - so not crazy weekend times. She provided a very quick and curt "no tables, we're full" and when asked if we could wait just a "no we're full". This happened the first time to me, and the second time to my mom. So independent of each other. When I was trying to check in, there was an older couple in front of me who was also turned away and so they asked if there was another Irish pub near by and the woman responded with a short "I don't know I work here not for the city". Clearly just bad service and puts us off from ever wanting to try to go back.

Yelp
Spent approximately 4 hours here drinking for st Patrick's day! We had a big party but our waitress was superb despite the busy crowd. Ordered the Macaroni and cheese and fries once we needed some sustenance to our Orange state sides and it definitely exceed my expectations lol. Literally no complaints i had a great time.

Yelp
Old style Irish Pub just off the beaten path. Was mostly empty when I arrived but became more crowded as time went by. Very local crowd who appear to have been known well by staff. Bartender was friendly and attentive, she also did double duty serving the tables near the bar. I grabbed a couple Smithwicks pints and a very tasty Grilled Chicken with Canadian Bacon and avocado. Food was fresh and prepared well. Menu was full of traditional staples and a few surprises.

Yelp
Another great pub in Philly. We're only a block & a half away. Loved the music. The wings were excellent. Great service as well.

Carol V.

Yelp
We had a private party in the basement for a family holiday pub crawl. The staff...drinks...service and food were impeccable!! We will be going back. And love the merch they sell online as welp! Ordered a new wardrobe from it. Lol
google avatar

Melanie F.

Yelp
Stopped here for dinner one night during our visit to Philly. We had the crab cake sandwich and the chicken club sandwich, both with tots. The crab cake was tasty, if a little dry. The curry sauce was quite tasty. The tots were cooked well, but could have used some seasoning. The beer list could have used some variety. 90% of them were IPAs. Service was fine.

Yelp
Great food, great location, and homey vibes in this Rittenhouse pub! There was one bartender/server taking care of the whole bar area and downstairs seating area, but we were in no rush so this worked out fine. This place would be awesome for a cozy date or friend hang, and also worked perfectly for a co-work late afternoon meeting. We enjoyed some drinks alongside the sheep's salad, mac and cheese, and delish fry spears with garlic. Still daydreaming about those fries! Soooo good. Everything is super reasonably priced and they have a great beer list as well. Whether you're craving some Irish favorites or just looking for a great spot to grab a pint, this is a great go-to.

Yelp
Pretty nice pub to come hang out and watch a game. Food is okay, price okay. Portion was big for meatloaf. Was decent and tasty. Some burger and sandwich had low amount of fries with 'em. Drink prices good though. Three different floors to go to, all good spots. Thanks

Yelp
Very great service, the food is amazing! I love the quality and the giant chunk of bacon in my burger. Really great beer. Decided to eat outside since it was very nice day

Yelp
Slightly charred sandwich with really good sauce & excellent fries. Staff is very nice and atmosphere is awesome

Yelp
Since my first visit last summer, I have been back to Black Sheep many times for many occasions and can now confidently say this is the kind of pub/restaurant where you want to become a regular. The staff is great, they are personable and friendly. They make you feel very welcome no matter which part of the space you are hanging in that day or night. The food is also realllllllly good. I'm a huge fan of the burger, love their mac and cheese, and the shepherd's pie is also next level. I have not had anything I didn't like. I've come by ambitiously with a group of 10 for lunch on a Sunday, and grabbed a seat at the downstairs bar late on a Thursday night for another drink and some food. I've also come for a private event, which was great too! It can get crowded on the weekends late night, but my favorite times here are during the day on Sunday or on a week night.

Yelp
Pretty sweet spot to chill in Philly. I was there for a work trip and met some friends there. Shout out to Gabby! She secured an awesome booth for us in the downstairs area that had some new artwork above it. It looked very cool. I liked the decor. Food-wise- it's bar food. I got garlic fries and chicken tenders. They were good! It got busier the longer we were there. It really started to fill up right before we left. This would be a really fun place to drink. I wasn't that night because I had an early day ahead of me. But if I was- this would be the spot. There was a super friendly worker at the door when we walked in and out at the end. She was super nice. Next time I visit, I will check out the upstairs. It seemed really fun on the main level. Note to self for next time :)

Amanda L.

Yelp
The menu looked good and looked like a decent crowd so figured it be a hit......really wasn't. We were told to wait and get seated by the bartender which is okay regardless of her unfriendly tone. We were told to sit towards back and when asked if we could have window booth (it was just us 2) they said no, but the party of 4 was allowed to sit there- both booths were the same size. We ended up spending over $100 and they left after one round of drinks but whatever! I ordered a flatbread that looked more like a salad with the amount of arugula and we got the Cuban with tots that came out cold. I gave it two stars because they were quick with taking orders and bringing drinks.

Yelp
love this pub. when i crave some irish food, this pub delivers. also enjoy the fish and chips during lent!

Yelp
It's a decent place. My friend and I came here looking for a place with more character. Something akin to nearby Good Dog. But when we came in the atmosphere was very basic and uninspiring. I expected the complete opposite from the outside looking in. Aside from that we weren't really upset with anything. The food was delicious and frankly I am intrigued by the rest of their menu. I got the Cuban sandwich and it was delicious. However, the accompanying garlic fries are just potato wedges and leave something to be desired. My friend had the cheesesteak spring rolls and really loved them. The staff was very friendly and the clientele was as well. We only visited the main floor but I know there's more to it. I would come back just to explore the other levels and to try the rest of their menu. Another thing that upset me was they're lack of stouts / porters. The only one they had on the menu Guinness. Ew.

Paul W.

Yelp
Stopping in for lunch, Wife had watermelon and arugula salad and I had the wedge salad. We shared the avocado and pesto flat bread. All very fresh and tasty. Server seemed upset to take our order but warmed up soon after.

Yelp
One of the better GrubHub restaurants we have ordered from. First, those lamb chops (Marinated in rosemary & olive oil with red wine and Guinness peppercorn sauce and petite salad) are amazing. Not gamey, not gristley. It came with a side of fresh salad - emphasis on the fresh and none of the wilted greens nonsense restaurants can sometimes try to pass off. The Guinness peppercorn sauce.... it is so tasty!! I was literally licking the take-out box clean, hence why I'm never eating in person. Volcano shrimp - Crispy shrimp tossed in our homemade lava sauce, served on a bed of lettuce. Very generous portion too. If anyone has gone to Bonefish Grill theirBang Bang Shrimp appetizer should really go under the Salad section - its like 8 pieces of less than popcorn sized shrimp on like half a head of lettuce. Anyway, I digress. The point is, Black Sheep is opposite of that. Lettuce with your shrimp versus Shrimp with your lettuce. I wasn't crazy about the chicken quesadilla with roasted poblano peppers, fresh grilled corn, refried beans, and cheddar jack cheese. We has asked for no refried beans and I think they may have accidentally included that so it gave this extra mushy texture to me. I also don't like refried beans period so that's a personal preference. I think they may also use dark meat chicken, which I also don't like, but was hard to tell since it was shredded. If you like refried beans and are ok with dark meat chicken, this would perfect for you! My fiance ordered his usual burger - the Black Sheep Burger. You get to choose two toppings and it is $1 each after. He went with provolone, gouda, caramelized onions, bacon, and portobello. No complaints from him!

Yelp
This was a perfect place to attend a private party! The upstairs is intimate but fit us all well, the bartenders were great, and the food was good!

Great food, great service, great vibes. Carter gets the party started and keeps it poppin' Darts downstairs too.

Yelp
Hey guys and gals and all the peoples, You know me, I'm a legend. Fucking Doogie for crying out loud. I'm generally too busy being a gay icon to post but I need to take a moment and praise the Black Sheep. I went in there trying to have a bad time, I was going through some stuff; it's not easy being a gay dad with gay kids (fingers crossed), but, despite that Karina won me over. What an outstanding bartender. Made me feel like I was on set of How I met Your Mother, great show if you haven't seen it. Her positive vibes and attitude could make even the pasty Allison Hannigan look like the flute pussy girl you loved and adored even today. Age isn't kind to all of us, sadly. Anyway I digress. Quick bit of advice come in for lunch and use your brain: order what you like and get the Cuban sandwich. I've loved Cubans since the first time I saw Lucy and Desi on my moms tv while home pretending to be sick, home from school. Graham crackers were cool back then, but being gay wasn't. Katrina is a great bartender, need I spell it out? The bathrooms were cool, stairs and nice new flappers.

Erin G.

Yelp
So cool. Love having a brew on the outside bar tops in Spring. Great decor. Love love love.

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
We stopped in for a couple of beers on a Friday evening after attempting to come in a few hours earlier when a game was on. We couldn't even get through the crowd to the bar the first time. I'm glad we came back. We sat in the second floor bar at a community table. It's a bit loud but the beer selection was great and so was the service. A bartender named Francis was super attentive and friendly. We ended up getting truffle fries and they were excellent and crispy. We would definitely go back.

Harry C.

Yelp
Brunch with the family Labor Day weekend. Menu is great - brunch classics available with all the regular pub fare as well - the mac and cheese, and cheesesteak spring rolls never miss! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Ariana A.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite brunches during pandemic - food is really good. This said, service and cleanliness have gone significantly downhill in the upstairs section.
google avatar

Yelp
The Black Sheep is a fun, cozy pub and a nice spot for a late-night drink in Philly. Tucked away on a side-street south of Rittenhouse Square, we almost missed this spot while walking past late on a Friday evening. After finding a nice table for people-watching in their upstairs bar, we ordered a couple beers and mixed drinks. A perfect spot for relaxed conversation and fun with friends.

Emma L.

Yelp
Food was absolutely disgusting. Chicken club was not a typical "chicken club," chicken was undercooked, and the side of fries were overcooked. Way too overpriced for how bad quality the food was. My boyfriend and I were both nauseous after leaving.

G M.

Yelp
9$ for a Smithwicks ? Get out of here with that nonsense, heard my accent , thought i was a tourist and decided to upcharge me without showing me the bill.
google avatar

Julia T.

Yelp
This is a solid Irish pub. I've come here several times and the service is always good. They have a solid beer list and a handful of seasonal cocktail specials. I've been on the main level and the 2 floors above but I think there's also a basement so if it seems crowded on one level, check out the others. I'm not the biggest fan of Irish food so the menu is tough for me. Aside from the Irish fare (bangers and mash, fish and chips, etc.) there's pretty average bar food like wings, fries, hummus. Not somewhere to expect a gourmet meal but it's a solid neighborhood pub.
google avatar

Kyle D.

Yelp
I would give the spot four stars but I just don't like the vibe. This was the first bar I ever went to when I first visited Philly 20 years ago w my girlfriend who was studying at Curtis. She was fantastic w knowledge of food. She also was one of the best violinist in the country. Probably even the world. But nonetheless, this establishment is overall OK. I would just say OK. They could use a better knowledge base of their beers bc I don't think the bt really knew what the heck he was talking about. So overall maybe he was just messing w me I don't know. But the crowd was a little Disrespectful. Now there was one or two people there that were quite friendly. I spoke to one person outside who was very nice - some sort of software engineer. I don't know, but he was also an artist like me so I would say that the diversity of clientele is a good thing, but sometimes it can be a bad thing, too. You never know.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Good food good beer, great atmosphere. We were in town for the Welsh festival. A nice neighborhood pub. We had some fish and chips and the Lamb chop special for the festival. Both were excellent.

Yelp
My brother and I took our Father here for lunch during my visit home. We do our best to find places with food he enjoys that allow us to take him out for a little trip. We took patco into the city from Jersey and it was a short walk to the Pub. The brickwork viewed from the outside of the pub is beautifully and truly gives it a timely pub feel when you enter. It is not large inside but there are 3 floors. We stayed on the first. There is the bar area with bar seating and some tables along the wall and then the other side of the room is about 6 tables I believe which can hold 4-6 people each. Due to the time of day we mostly had the place to ourselves. Our service was friendly and timely and so was the food and drink. Neither disappointed and our Father even stated he would be up for a return visit, which is huge for him to say! I highly recommend stopping into this pub, grabbing a cocktail or pint and browse their menu.

Hailey F.

Yelp
The service here is always really good, even when busy. Waiters/ servers are very attentive. But when i came in December I ordered the chicken sandwich and it came out completely raw in the middle which was discovered after biting into it. The server felt bad and obviously took it back in a second but it was very gross.
google avatar

Shaji K.

Yelp
Looking around Rittenhouse on a Sunday afternoon for brunch with most places being generally packed. This spot had both available outdoor seating as well as a decent brunch selection. Kept it healthy by ordering the Egg White Frittata ($13) to go along with a Bloody Mary ($4.50). Good pricing on the drink as it was certainly strong yet balanced. Food comes out a little bit later; a well cooked egg served alongside a side salad and toast. Eggs didn't need any extra sauce, while the side salad is a nice buffer. Server here was sorry friendly and handled all the tables with ease. Seems like a great place to watch sports inside as well.

Ella M.

Yelp
Cheese fries were sloppy as they should be. Quesadilla felt like walking barefoot on a beach in mexico except for the sour cream. Drink menu not descriptive but does the job
google avatar

Saaurav B.

Yelp
Went for quizzo on a weeknight and had a great time! The food, drinks and vibes were great. Loved their selection of sour beer as I love sour beer! For food I got beer battered fish and chips with salad. In terms of quizzo my team lost badly because none of us were prepared, some of those questions were super challenging but still enjoyed it a lot. Will be back for more quizzo, hopefully win next time.

Matt R.

Yelp
Friendly service, impressive appetizer portion, beer could be colder (sorry, beer snob here), however they can't cook a burger to save their lives. I ordered my burger RARE and it came out WELL DONE! This isn't a pre made patty, this is a hand packed burger patty. How hard is it to cool a burger RARE? Otherwise, we liked the place and would consider giving them another try next time we come through town.

Yelp
My friends and i were walking around looking for a good shot to eat lunch. Is hard picking an area in philly since everything is good, but we jumped in here to try it out. Friendly staff and great food! Everything came out hot and very very flavorful. The portions are big so bring an appetite if you want to tri more than one thing! I'll be back soon to try out some more odd that menu!

Yelp
Cheese steak spring rolls were as delicious as I remember. But the burger, ordered medium, was dry as a bone. Shared half with my friend for half of her fish and chips. Another disappointment as the breading was doughy and undercooked, almost inedible. Service was great, but won't go back anytime soon.

Yelp
Went for Trivia Night and to watch a basketball game. Ambiance was nice - drink selection was good. However, note that the Trivia was pretty awful - it was a ton a minutia - most teams only getting 1-2 out of 10 total each round. Wouldn't recommend for that unless you're Uber serious about trivia.
