Where to Buy Interesting, Unusual, and Delicious Bottles of Wine in Philly

"Located in the heart of the East Passyunk Avenue restaurant strip, the Bottle Shop boasts wine from around the world, from big everyday brands and canned and boxed wine to more esoteric options including organic, pet-nat, and orange wines. Despite the name, this is also a bar, which means you can sip wine and beer while you decide what to take home. On the other hand, you can also order online for delivery throughout South Philly, or join a monthly wine club focused on organic and sustainable picks." - Carolyn Desalu, Noelle Allen

The Bottle Shop Review - East Passyunk - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"The Bottle Shop is right in the middle of all the BYOBs on East Passyunk, which makes it a pretty popular place. Other than having an incredibly straightforward name, it has a large selection of bottles - both beer and wine - that you can drink there, take out, or even get delivered to wherever you’re having dinner." - Sydney McElwee

This was a great little spot to spend an hour before our dinner reservation. There is both a small bar with beers on tap and coolers with a wide variety of beers, both craft and the regular stuff which my husband was very pleased with. You can just grab what you need and chill. I had a really delicious strawberry NA beer suggested by the staff, really the best NA beer I have ever had. Most of all this is just a fun, relaxing easygoing stop. We had tired feet after several hours of sightseeing and this felt perfect.

Google
Great place to hang out with friends and pick from a huge variety of beers, ciders, and they even have beer and wine on tap! They had this pumpkin beer from Maine! They also have board games and sometimes people come in with dogs and cats. 11/10

Google
Great little stop while on Passyunk Ave. Good selection of beer to purchase and some great tap selections. They had a Hill Farmstead Citra DIPA while I was there that was fantastic! I will definitely stop in again!

Where to begin? The BS is my favorite place in South Philly. Possibly the world. Best service, great prices, exceptional selection, casual hang out. BYO food, games, babies, dogs and cats. If every neighborhood had a Bottle Shop, the world would live in harmony.

Allie Boehm

Google
I love how inviting this spot is- whether you have dogs, cats, or kids. Their selection is always rotating and even has a variety of non-alcoholic drinks. Paws down, Milkshake's favorite spot

Anthony Spina

Google
The best bar on East Passyunk, hands down. I cannot fathom how many beers they have here, both on draught and in the fridges. They also have cheeky shots of liquor. Every worker is remarkably kind, personable, and knowledgeable about the beers they offer. Don’t skip this spot!

Google
Good variety. Simple spot to sit and have a beverage.

Google
Nice beer selection and vibes. It has a very laid-back atmosphere. The staff was pleasant, as well.

Vanessa T.

Yelp
This spot is easy, simple, and a solid selection for beers and ciders. Love the rotating draft menu and the employees there explain the beers, ciders and wines to you in a non pretentious way. You can also order food/bring food in to enjoy with your drink! Easy fun spot to bring your friends for a lil pregame before hitting the town :)

Michael B.

Yelp
Great selection. For a bottle shop that delivers, prices are fair. Cool environment if you want to go in and have a drink, play a game, pet some dogs. You guys need to give Eddie a raise. Honestly, he's awesome and professional and I truly appreciate when he delivers here.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. They always have great beer on draft and a anything else you could want in the fridge. Everyone who works there is supercool. Also dog friendly!
google avatar

Sue C.

Yelp
This is a great spot if you're in the mood for a relaxed hangout with friends. There were several interesting beers on draft when I visited, which the staff was very nice about letting me try. There's also a small selection of board games towards the back of the room. This is an okay spot to build your own six pack. There is a great selection but I could not bring myself to buy anything since the prices are so high (e.g. $3.75 for a bottle of Yards Pale Ale!), even with the 10% off deal on build-your-own. In summary - great spot that isn't a bar to chill and have a beer, not a great spot to buy beer to go.

Yelp
We are from out of town, two of us are from Vegas. It was about 930pm on a Sunday night. We yelped a place to buy alcohol/beer in the area. Came across this place. Upon entering no one greeted us, it's a pretty small place and we were the only ones there plus one other customer that seemed to know a lot about beer. He was actually helping my cousin out on the selection (not the people that actually work there but the customer was). Then we went to go pay and as a very polite and small talker person that I am I attempt to start a conversation with the two guys at the register.... mild attitude and crickets... So that's why they got a 2 star review.
google avatar

Brad K.

Yelp
Great location friendly service. Parking is luck of the draw on a Sunday ...prepare to pay a huge mark up. the prices $22 for 12 pack of white claws

Yelp
This was my first time at the Bottle Shop in South Philly - I've always enjoyed this concept at other spots in the city, and this experience met my expectations. There are only two outdoor tables, but we were able to snag a spot on a Saturday evening. We enjoyed a few draft beers followed by canned beers from the fridges. It's always nice to be able to try something new and local without having to buy a whole 6-pack. Good selection, cool vibe, would definitely return.
google avatar

Yelp
I like that you can come here and pick out a beer, wine, or sake and sit down. It seems like a good place to hang out with friends and have a chill hang out. The only bummer was the prices seemed really high and they didn't have any 4 or 6 packs for us to take home. I think this is a place to just grab a beer or two and be prepared to spend 5-9 dollars for a beer.
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
The Bottle Shop reminded me (fondly) of a few other beer stores in Philly. Great selection, market prices, a place to sit. What makes the Bottle Shop different to me is the staff and atmosphere. It's a seriously chill spot to hang out and they embrace that. My most recent visit was for Bill M's game night UYE. We had a nice table in the back where we could play games, enjoy any of the beers we wished to buy and even order food from local restaurants. Picture it as being at your friend's place where they have an awesome beer selection (that they charge you for). Other folks and pups were making themselves at home as well. When planning your visit, keep in mind BYO paper goods and plastic ware. Speaking of plastic, it's cool if you use a charge card, but don't forget cash for a tip- you can't add it onto the bill. Bottle Shop, you are a standout establishment!

K M.

Yelp
They loved that we were playing card games, let us stay a few minutes past closing to finish the round.

Yelp
In a way living so close to here is a curse. A delicious curse of hops and barley & seasonal ales! But living a block and a half away from Bottle Shop has given me a chance to take in the true variety of beer that it offers and then some it doesn't have the Foodery or Hawthorne's sized variety of beers. But it's on par with the likes of Food & Friends and wins out on 6 pack prices. The best thing about here though are their tasting events and neighborhood appeal. friend them on Facebook and you'll find out about their 2-3 tastings a month; which have featured the likes of Flying Fish, New Holland, and Harpoon. The fact that you can pick up a six pack and sit among friends in one of their super sized tables is a pretty solid deal too, and it can make for a good people watching experience. Bonus points also go out to the variety of beer glasses that you can purchase, and the delicious cheddar popcorn that they make!

John R.

Yelp
Great delivery. On time, nice, and speedy! Everything you can want. My new favorite delivery service!!!

Yelp
For beer and wine lovers, this is a must-stop shop conveniently located on the Passyunk Ave. strip. Coolers full of specialty beers ( literally 1,000's ), and a very nice and fair-priced wine bottle selection make this gem the best place in Philly to grab a quick bottle of vino. A small bar with around a half-dozen handles lets you taste test, and even pour larger portions of beer or wine to go.
google avatar

Don R.

Yelp
No shots firing off on this bar (only Wine and Beer - No Hard Liquor) but they did have what appeared to be a Sommelier on-staff who was able hold her own in the wine department. She hand picked a bottle that was so absolutely splendid for a dinner party I was making my way to and everyone in attendance just raved about it. Picking wine for me has been something of an uncorked game of Russian Roulette so of course I bragged about what happened and we all cleared our pallets! Pair this positively heart pounding customer experience with friendly neighborhood dogs and non-melancholic millennial watching and I have to say, this place really hits the target! Good Luck!

Carla C.

Yelp
I live on Passyunk Avenue and have been supporting this place for years due to their expansive collection of beers and wines. However, after my experience this past Saturday, I will never be going back. My fiancé and I had stopped by to grab a few bottles of wine. While we were waiting the sandwich board in front of the shop slammed into my leg very hard. Not only did the staff not apologize, after seeing it happen. But they then thanked the person who picked the sign up. Needless to say they lost a loyal customer because they clearly do not care for the safety or satisfaction of their customers
google avatar

Freddy P.

Yelp
This place has such a great selection of beer and wine. This place was one of the first to offer build your own six packs which was unheard of when they first opened but is now the norm. Their manager Tara is very knowledgeable and helpful with there expansive collection. Not bad to look at either lol. Very pretty. But anyway yeah the place is clean, the staff is knowledgeable as well and they make you feel at home. For all of your alcohol needs this is the place to go. Try it you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
I've stopped into bottle shop regularly since they've been around. I've never had an unpleasant experience and the staff has always been quiet but at the same time friendly. No complaints here. Sure their selection is more expensive then other places but it's a specialty beer store. It's not uncommon for businesses like this. People complaining are saying they've bought out it mere convenience but still giving them their business. If it's too expensive maybe go to acme? But i feel bad that people are leaving 1-3 star reviews based on prices when they chose to spend their money here. Just an observation.

Yelp
The folks were friendly. The space is OK, not as inviting as Hawthorne's but nicer than the Foodery in the gayborhood. A row of tables on the left side (with no one sitting), and row of big fridges on the right. It was a bit dim and low-ceilinged. Most of the beers I have tried before but the selection is not terrible. Overall, I think I'm just a bit hesitant to buy into the bottle shop idea... I know many people are in love with it but whenever that 6 pack rings up at $20 I just end up being disappointed. I feel speciality bottle shops are in a bit of a no man's land between great beer bars in the area (Devil's Den, SPTR, POPE) and great beer distributors (such as Bella Vista). If I'm going to spend upwards of $20 for 6 beers, maybe I should have spent $20 on 4 and been social at the bar or spent an extra $10-$15 to buy an entire case of good beer for home. The variety can easily be tried and surpassed at all of these bars too (and can be had even cheaper at happy hour!). I think this is just the way my mind works but I'd rather spend $100 for 3 variety cases at the distributor to keep a mix of beer on hand at home. Overall, a good addition to the neighborhood for people who occasionally grab a sixer, but I'm not sure I'll personally be heading to pay $20 for a 6 pack very often.

Yelp
Nice cozy area. Heard they had some good ciders here so just came in to fill a growler. Was out in 15 mins. Perfect service, cleaned up the growler too for me... oops. Would return. Beer list was seasonal, pumpkin flavored stuff, spiced ales, and an IPA. All local. Recommend. Street parking it seems like, but there's a paid lot near it.

Yelp
There is no way I'm giving The Bottle Shop anything but 5 stars--unless there were more stars to give. It's simple, really; I love beer, and The Bottle Shop is one of the reasons for that. You walk in, grab a little 6-pack holder (or 4-pack) and dive into a sea of awesomeness. And in my case, indecisiveness. Other than the fact that they have an insane selection of bottled beers (W/E Coast, Local, International, Seasonal, etc.), the events that take place at The Bottle Shop are pretty sweet. For instance, if you're a The Walking Dead fan, during the screening of the show they have offers that include all these cool beers that have 'zombies' and 'dead' in their name. They also have pretty tasty beers on draft which are super inexpensive; $3 for a pint of some delicious, delicious stout. The staff has always been incredibly nice! They are always being helpful and keeping a chill atmosphere at the store; the other day a customer asked them if they could get delivery to The Bottle Shop and the person working there was completely fine with it. I realized people go there, eat food, play board/card games, watch TV, drink beers, and whatever else there is to just have fun. Love this place! You can find me at The Bottle Shop every Wednesday, right before my poker night. Nahhh, I'm just kidding; I'm there almost every day! FYI. They take LevelUp!

Yelp
WHERE DID ALL THE GERMAN BEERS GO! You used to be able to get Weihenstephaners and Schneiders but it's all IPAs and stuff. Luckily there was Franziskaner to save the day. Fk me. Change of location...much better area even though it's 2 blocks away.
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection, great (moneymaking) concept of build your own six pack (trying to build the most expensive six pack amongst friends is a very lose/lose/win scenario), and just a nice little space in general. Been here a number of times to grab some brews, and the esoteric selection allows one to explore the wealth of different flavors that are out there in the ether... or you could always resort to picking up a six pack of some old faithful lager. The woman at the counter does bother me a lot though. Uninviting, unfriendly, just very-not-a-people kind of person. Maybe she just had a bad day, but not returning a greeting to a customer (me), and not offering me a bag to place my purchase in really bothered me. Sorry to say that bad customer service experiences can ruin what is essentially a great product (I'd refer you to my Umami Burger review... but after a bad experience with a certain website, that particular review, and an abundance of many others have been lost to history, space, and time). I'll be back for the beer selection, but your purgatorial three star rating will remain until I see some changes from the attitude bearing lady behind your cash counter.
google avatar

Penelope M.

Yelp
Pro's - Amazing selection of beer, wine and hard ciders - Taste testing of tap selections available Con's - Each of the 4 times I've stopped in it's always the same woman that works behind the counter & each time she has the same, you're totally interrupting me attitude. No greeting, no friendly demeanor, definitely not willing to share any beer insight on her own. Honestly I didn't even want to ask her to try a new beer I saw on tap b/c she seems so unapproachable. She set the cup in front of me, no info about it, no nothing, just stared as I drank it. My friend was going to ask about the chips behind the counter but as soon as she gave him his money back she had her back turned so quickly and then was walking off to go stock the beer case that it wasn't even worth it. One, maybe two times ok someone is having a bad day but 4? 4 times & you're like this each time is pretty off putting. It's a beer store, how can you be that miserable?? - Very limited seating outside and by the bar. People tend to stay there for hours nursing a beer just to sit outside or recently a woman was reading a book with any empty glass in front of her the whole time we were there. No one wants to be rushed I get that but with such limited seating & when you have a crowd hovering around the bar maybe the bartender should say something about monopolizing all the good seats if you aren't drinking. - I'm a dog lover but when you are trying to walk inside and the people crowded around the bar (which is at the entrance) have large dogs just moseying around on a long leash it's annoying, especially when someone you're with is allergic to dogs. From now on I'll just run in if I have no other options b/c the unfriendly environment was not appreciated on this past warm weather weekend.

Noah C.

Yelp
The selection is decent and the pricing is fine. There is a beer and a price point for everyone. Of choruses cheaper prices can be found at the acme but they don't have the selection. The ambiance isn't great but it works. Sitting at the front with the windows open can be nice, although Passyunk is a pretty sleepy street most of the time. Overall it's like a bottle shop. It's fine. The reason for the 1 Star is that bear closing on the night I was there an employee dumped the shop's curbside ashtray into the street. Cigarette butts and ashes just thrown in the street. It's gross and defeats the purpose of the ashtray.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
I had been wanting to check this place out since they had opened earlier this fall, and finally went Saturday night when they were doing a special Stoudt's beer and cheese tasting. It was definitely worth the trip. This place has a good selection, and they also have a box on the register where you can suggest beers that you want to see in the cases. This place has a nice feel - sort of like hanging out in a friend's rec room, you can sit down, have a beer, and eat popcorn or hot dogs. My boyfriend and I each tried a few different winter seasonal beers, which we were really pleased with. They seem to also host a number of special events, which is always a nice perk. All in all, a good place to stop in.
google avatar

Andre B.

Yelp
I lucked out and asked our server at Stateside about the local beer places in the East Passyunk area. I was looking for some Russian River beer and I was able to make my own 6 pack of pricey yet hard to find Russian River beers at the Bottle Shop on this evening. They have an extensive beer fridge selection from local bottles to ones from all over the world. They do offer a few brews on tap and you can open bottles there to drink, but mostly a carry out bottle shop. The Bottle Shop is a cool hangout in a cool neighborhood.
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
The Bottle Shop is a great spot! We take our growlers there and fill them up all the time or grab a few 6 packs from the wide variety of beers. Great place to bring your Dog after a long walk to hang out and drink a beer. The Staff here are friendly and extremely helpful with the knowledge of their selection.
google avatar

Richard R.

Yelp
While the selection is diverse and features many great brews, I find the price mark-up to be a bit step, even for a city known for its over-priced beer. The shop is also very narrow, so when even slightly crowded it can become very cramped and difficult to move around. I wouldn't recommend this place for a grab-and-go six pack, but it's great if you just want to sit down and savor a single bottle (or two or three) of unique and seasonal beers. They also offer some beers on tap, but stick to the bottles - it's called the bottle shop after all.

Nicholas S.

Yelp
They have a great selection (though not much larger than other small shops that sell individual bottles) . I know everyone complains about it being overpriced or the service, but who are we kidding? Everything in the Shitty of Philthadelphia is overpriced, and a lot of people aren't friendly. Half the time when I visit anywhere else, they're not friendly. They just check me out, and that's it. No "hi, how are you?" or "welcome, this is our special." Stop expecting suburban service when you're in this dump of a city. You're lucky to even get a "hello" in this town. Honestly most businesses I've been to, the employees don't even acknowledge you. You go in. You get what you want. You pay. That's it. Welcome to Philadelphia where most people don't want to be your friend. Get over it. Larger bottles (1 pint, 6oz) do in fact run up to $2 more than this deli by my apartment (ex Neshaminy Creek Menzinger is $7 there, but $9.50 here at the Bottle Shop). The 12oz bottles run about 50¢ (to $1) more on average than that deli (and other shops that sell mix a six packs). These prices do include tax, though, and they do 10% off mix and match 6 packs, so I guess it evens out. It will cost you more if you only buy one or two but if you get an entire six pack, then prices are pretty standard. I don't know why everyone says the people who work here are rude. I asked this guy about their Neshaminy Creek beers, and he was very friendly. He even looked in the basement for more, but unfortunately they were out. I didn't particularly mind that they were out because I'm not dying for it, but he was nice about it and even told me next month (July 2017) Neshaminy Creek is the brewery of the month so they will have 6 and 12 packs on sale. I've even sent them a few messages on Facebook asking if they have certain beers, and they're really nice about it. I'm starting to think it's the customers who are the problem and not the people who work here. I dig it, but only to grab one or two and hangout at the front. I probably wouldn't do a mix a six here because I don't live very close (and most of the beers are cold).
google avatar

Kathleen D.

Yelp
One of my brothers lives right around the corner from The Bottle Shop. When I go there with him to mix and match some six packs, I drive him up a wall...because I take FOREVER. The Bottle Shop has so very many American and Imported craft beers from which to choooose. Really good selection. Nice cold mixed sixies of good beers, and they're 10% off, these six packs. I love the selection balancing act of choosing old favorite beers and news ones to try. See, I really do take forever. Next time maybe I'll take them up on their snacks. A person can build up a powerful appetite, beer shopping. Though I've never attended any of their beer tasting events, I appreciate that they seem to have them regularly. I wouldn't mind having such a bottle shop in my neck of the philly woods.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Bottle stores are awesome and I'm really happy to see more opening. The Bottle Shop has a decent beer selection, but more importantly at competitive prices. Other bottle shops in the city charge a noticeable difference per bottle. Those little bastards add up so quickly. It seems like a nice place to hang out and drink a few beers. The staff is very nice and helpful with recommendations. I was on a sour beer kick and they pointed me in the right direction. The beer was organized so it was easy to pick out beer I haven't tried yet. The Bottle Shop fits nicely into the neighborhood. Its worth a visit.

Amy N.

Yelp
Bottle Shop I heart thee! Stand around in front of the super fridge and behold its bountiful selection. I paced in front of that thing for at least 25 minutes total picking out my 4 beers of the evening. (They also have more beers appearing on tap up front.) What's even better is that since they don't always sell food --- they are completely okay with your bringing in your own. Grab a pizza down the street from *** and walk right in and chow down on unique pizza and whatever beer you'd like? What's not to love? For newbies - Don't throw away your bottles! There're no waiters - so how do you think they keep track of what you're drinking? At the end of your stay, take 'em up front and that's how they'll ring you up! You can grab a board game from the back shelf and have a rousing night of Apples to Apples. Enjoy the crazy art on the walls (Or you can buy it!) After enjoying a night with the west coast, trying Red Hook Nut Brown Ale (Seattle), Tommyknocker Maple Nut Brown (Idaho Springs, CO) and Breckenridge Vanilla Porter (Denver) that I knew was delicious from previous sampling --- via smuggling direct from Denver! A good ole' Lancaster Brewing Co's Milk Stout rounded out my evening. And all prices were more than reasonable. There were also several other beers still calling my name at the end of the night. And even more colossal sized beers from the bottom row just winking at me for the next time I feel like getting completed messed up. Imports, All American - if its crafty and delicious - it'll make an appearance in that glorious fridge.

Toki W.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of this place. The hours are great, the prices are reasonable, they carry rotating half cases, includes happy hour specials on draught, and they'll stock something you want if they don't have it. The new location is great, but it feels a little smaller. But who the hell cares? You're not having a dinner party there. Get your beer, go home, get drunk. That's what this place is about. They also sell light snacks and some cigarettes if you're so inclined. This place has become a neighborhood fixture :D

Yelp
1 - Gluten Free Beer and ALOT of if 2 - Level Up and a free $2 right off the batt 3 - A Gluten Free cookie at the counter 4 - Tons of other beers to choose from 5 - Lots of seating to enjoy with friends = 5 Stars

Yelp
I am officially joining the ranks of people that like this place. Extremely impressive selection and they have a tv. Grab a few beers and stay for whatever's on the tube. I took a solid 15 minutes just looking over everything they had before I made my choice. The prices seem standard and as another reviewer pointed out, certainly cheaper than a pub. Now if they only had a twitter account so I could find out when their events are...
google avatar

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
I don't know much about beer or any alcohol for that matter. I feel totally comfortable asking for their help and they do! I used to be the worst at supplying alcohol for get together's and now I am totally the best. And plus they are a block away so that's rad and open a lot being it's kind of a bar too which is insanely convenient. I like that they are pet friendly. I don't have any pets but I appreciate the atmosphere with.

Cait G.

Yelp
Decent yet wildly overpriced selection. I live in the neighborhood and have popped in here several times mainly out of convenience. Every single time I've gone in here, I have had an unpleasant experience. Like...every single time. Just unnecessary sour attitude across the board. It's bizarre. The other night, walking down Passyunk, I was passing by and decided that instead of grabbing my wine from acme on my way home, I would try and support this local small business during the coronavirus crisis. I was checking out the signs on the door for half a second when this lady comes out asking if I'm there for pickup. I said no, just looking into grabbing a few bottles to go. She goes "ummmmmmm actually right now we need customers to order at least 30 minutes ahead of time." Right then and there I decided I will never do business with these douchebags ever again. Get a grip.

Yelp
1. There's beer. 2. You can use LevelUp. 3. You can bring food, games, your homework, your pet skunk, whatever, and sit and enjoy a bottle (or two, or three...). 4. The employees seem pleasant. Any questions?

Yelp
I was debating between 4 and 5 stars and then realized...Duh. This place is awesome with craft beer selections galore! Well, that kinda sucks too because you can end up standing there as the minutes tick by, staring at and sidestepping the large wall cooler while trying to make a decision...or six. Yep, you can build and buy six-packs to go or just grab a single bottle, lounge in a chair and enjoy. Prices are rounded off to the nearest half-dollar, leading to a clean dollar total and avoiding those pesky pennies for your transaction(s). No cash? No card? No problem. They also take LevelUp, so pull out your cell phone and scan away. Want to stay awhile, hang out and play some board games at one of their tables? Bottle Shop got ya covered there too. Our Yelp Mob (YOB) gathered around and enjoyed a friendly game of Apples to Apples before eventually continuing on our Saturday crawl. A fun time and a great stop along E Passyunk.

Yelp
I'm giving The Bottle Shop one additional star because the people who work there seem to be reasonably nice. After a very long time of not going there I've gone twice recently to buy mixed six-packs. It's easy walking distance and I want to give them a chance, but again it's the prices. $9 for a St. Bernardus; Hawthorne's sells it for $7.15. Again, I do not work for Hawthorne's nor am I trying to get them more business but it's the only other comparable bottle shop south of South (that I'm aware of) and the only other one I frequent so I use it as an example to authoritatively compare prices. If you're buying a number of bottles these differences do add up and I simply can't see any reason why you would go here over Hawthorne's unless there was a travel issue, and I suspect The Bottle Shop is banking on their location to justify the prices of some of these bottles. As someone else mentioned they don't have a very good selection of imports. St. Bernardus aside, the array of Belgians is quite paltry. I was happy to see a large bottle of Goose Island Bourboun County Stout, but not happy to see it insanely priced at $29. Can't do it, Bottle Shop...I'm going to Hawthorne's, each and every time.

Yelp
Sometimes you just don't want to deal with a bar. You don't want over priced white fish and tempura fried tots that are really just Wednesday school lunch repackaged at gastro-pub fare. You don't want a waiter with an greasy, tangled, epic beard serving your drinks. And you definitely don't want the shitty Czech house music the assistant manager picked up from his barista girlfriend. No thanks. When you're not in the mood for your neighborhood bar I think you should go to the bottle shop. Compared to the other watering holes in South Philly it is far more relaxed and devoid of the neighborhood sub-humans. There is a fairly wide selection of beers that rotate by season , and the staff is more than happy to help you out if you have any questions. I find that this place is largely overlooked as a place to chill or read. I highly recommend it . Most people jut get a a beer or a six-pack and leave. The only problem I have with drinking in is that the snacks are uninspiring. I remember when they had meatballs, but they tasted like cardboard. Nowadays they are experimenting popcorn selections and beer floats. Beer and ice cream are not appetizing to me. Otherwise, this place is a great addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
This is a cool spot that does things differently that other make your own six pack places, like the fact they they have lots of seating, four rotating taps with limited, hard to find brews (and growlers), and some lite snacks and comfort food (although I havent tried any of the food yet). My only complaint is that I think they could find ways to increase their selection, i think it is limited (escpecially their belgian section) compared to other places (think food and friends)...its a little nitpicky, but I kinda wish they would organize by brewery and not style. Paying with level up is always a plus too.

Yelp
Great selection, great cozy hip vibe to hang out inside or outside. I always send my friends here to pick up beer when they're visiting from out of town. Really kind and friendly staff! Dogs welcome :)

Yelp
ATTENTION ATTENTION THE BOTTLE SHOP HAS MOVED FROM ITS OLD LOCATION 1837 E PASSYUNK Ave AT THE INTERSECTION OF E PASSYUNK & 12st down E PASSYUNK JUST 2 1/2 Blocks to 1616 E PASSYUNK AVE ( across from Capadero ice cream and coffee/ South Philly stained glass/ in between Cappo's coin shoppe & Dr Kerry Sharps Dentist and century 21 office. Bigger better space and bar area with more draft selections and still fill growlers. Go check them out

Yelp
Love this quaint little beer store/hangout. It's such a great idea... Beer for sale by the bottle (just like at the beer store), but with tables for socializing. Also, there's a tasty little array of snacks - all seem to be vegan, and non-alcoholic beverages. Went here for beer and board games with the Yelp Elite crowd. It was a fun time. Plus, I even tried a new cider that I loved, thanks to the advice of a helpful employee. I told her that I love ciders, but not too sweet, and she pointed out a variety of choices. Overall, the staff seems incredibly friendly and helpful. If they ever decide to expand, it would be nice to see a wider variety of snack options. Either way, this is a nice local haunt.

Yelp
Very nice place with a good selection. Staff do not usually ask you if you need help, but are happy to help if you ask. The only issue I have run into is that their 6-packs of PBR are always VERY filthy on the top, so you need to wash the cans before drinking them!

Yelp
I appreciate that they allow those who are scared to commit to a six pack quantity buy in single bottle increments. Thus this must be why they call it the bottle shop...Not the 6 pack shop. They have tables and let you drink and be merry with their plethora of games. When you are done you bring up your empties and they give you the bill. I appreciate that they are trying to create a sense of community and place to hang out. Their selection is vast and not really where you go to purchase your suitcase of Bud Light, but if you are looking for craft beer. This is where it is at! Also - Holler, thanks for taking Level Up! Huge fan!

Yelp
Dear Bottle Shop, We love you and your new, beautiful location! You offer SUCH great variety for SUCH reasonable prices--you give a picky girl like me (read: usual beer hater) the opportunity to test drive any label I want. It's a dream come true! On top of that, you LITERALLY fulfilled my suggestion request within ONE WEEK! Normally an action such as this would have us doing back flips. BACK FLIPS! Unfortunately, I have to dock stars because the past 3 times I've gone in there NO ONE has offered to assist me--when we've clearly needed it. I'm sure your staff is super knowledgeable, but it's a shame to not share that with your loyal customers--especially when they are doing their best to appear desperate for your attention. A simple "can I help you find something" could really go a long way (as in straight from my wallet to your cash register!) Sincerely, local beer newb :)

Yelp
I don't know what people are talking about when they say this place is expensive. If you compare the prices to going to a bar, it's A LOT cheaper. My boyfriend and I can never believe how low our bill is when we hang out here. One night, we had a large group watching some fights for a few hours, and I think our bill was around $15 per person (or less! We had one pathetic, broke friend who bought a 6-pack for like $6.) Now, of course, it is more expensive than buying beer at a distributor. I think. Who knows? I am from Virginia and was used to buying beer at the gas station, grocery store and 711. I still can't figure out how you all up here live, totally bereft of beer in the most logical places. The Bottle Shop is one of the things that makes me like your strange Northern ways! The vibe is laidback and the staff is friendly. They feed you snacks and give good suggestions. Hello, Hopsecutioner, my new love! This place rules. You better RECONIZE!
