Pile on the Pastries at Center City’s Adorable Carbs Counter | Eater Philly

"Run by prolific Philly restaurateur Ellen Yin’s High Street Hospitality Group in a small counter-service space in Center City, this bakery balances a daytime pastry counter with nighttime baking workshops. Inside, more than 20 pan-Asian–influenced pastries (with flavors like yuzu, candied ginger, cardamom, matcha, miso, and black sesame) share space with creative breads such as caraway rye, epi sesame baguettes, cherry buckwheat loaves, and luscious loaves sold by weight. Standout items include the tuna nicoise hoagie on an excellent soft-but-sturdy seeded roll loaded with tuna, white anchovies, black olive spread, diced jammy egg, roasted peppers, and greens; a thick, squiggly matcha croissant loaf with a crispy exterior and soft, matcha-cream-filled interior; and a chewy, not-too-sweet miso tahini cookie topped with sesame seeds for a bit of crunch. The drink menu plays off the pastries with options like a croissant milk cortado that’s short and sweet and a black sesame latte whose subtle sweetness pairs well with the cookie. The walk-up counter is flanked by flowers, but seating is limited to a few counter window spots and a couple of tables, so it’s smart to plan ahead, order online, or take everything to go. After hours, the space transforms into a bakery workshop for pizza-making classes for children, lamination lessons, sourdough introductions, and private group sessions." - Nadia Chaudhury

This New Philly Bakery Is Committing to 20 Different Pastries a Day | Eater Philly

"Backed by Ellen Yin’s High Street Hospitality, this airy, rustic‑chic bakery channels the community spirit of Fork Etc., operating as a daytime destination for a vast pastry and bread lineup and an evening hub for baking classes, visiting bakers, and private events. The walk‑up case holds 20 pastries daily from pastry chef Kate Hughes—think smoked vanilla–bay leaf kouign amann, almond–yuzu bostock, a rotating “daily pop tart” (currently blueberry preserve with blue basil), and a daily cruller launching with tahini–honeycomb with fennel pollen and a coconut version—though the team’s repertoire goes well beyond 20. Head baker Kyle Wood turns out daily loaves like seeded pullman and cheddar–black pepper, plus rotating specialties such as an olive–rosemary loaf and a Keystone loaf made exclusively with local flour (primarily from Lost Bread and Small Valley Milling) and sold by weight like large French loaves. Bread anchors the savory side, too, with a hoagie muffuletta on sesame focaccia, black lime chicken salad on ciabatta, and a simple seeded roll with Pennsylvania cheddar and house‑made cultured butter inspired by head chef Christina McKeough’s Copenhagen meal. A partially open kitchen, shelves stocked with flours from Castle Valley Mill and favorite jams, and an eight‑seat communal table that once sat in Albert Barnes’s laboratory invite guests to linger during weekday hours (7 a.m.–4 p.m.) and weekends (9 a.m.–3 p.m.), while a slate of classes—sourdough 101, lamination, baking for kids, and ongoing pizza workshops—with a visiting bakers series in the works rounds out the experience; a few High Street Bakery favorites, like the chocolate hazelnut croissant, have migrated here." - Devra Ferst

The mocha didn’t have enough chocolate in it and tasted like a latte instead. They were out of all types of croissants and pastries by 2 PM on a Wednesday so keep that in mind before planning to come here. I’ll come back to try their pastries some day. Update 11/13/25: went back again today at 1:30ish. This time I got their Spelt cake and Olive oil brownie. The spelt cake was extremely dry and the olive oil brownie was rock hard!! I told them I was eating it inside the cafe but they didn’t bother to ask if I wanted the brownie warmed up. I am not sure they know how hard their brownie gets when cold. I wonder if the spelt cake could be warmed up as well to soften it up a little? Any way, I wasn’t sure if the spelt cake could be warmed up again so I somehow swallowed the dry cake down and got the brownie packed so I could warm it up at home. I hate that I have to tip such customer service where they don’t even bother to ask the customer if they wanted something warm or cold. I think people will still go here so my one advice is to go when they open because from what I have seen their pastries are just lying around for a long time and become dry and cold later in the day.

So grateful for this new spot! A delightful lineup of sweet & savory pastries, Passenger coffee, and cozy seating. Will be back for the semolina cake with labneh topping, quiche, and to try their Kouign-amann. Be aware, a line to the door by 10am on a Tuesday but it moves quickly and they readily restock/ add new items!

Love this new bakery, such a cozy and beautiful atmosphere. Got the sourdough bread to go and have been loving it. Also the oatmeal currant cookie which was very good, can't wait to come back for more!

Google
Not exaggerating when I say this is some of the best bread I’ve ever had. Anywhere. The potato lemon focaccia, WOW. All of it just works, which I was skeptical of. So many “new” bakeries overdue it and the bread is just too chewy and dense. Sometimes less is more. This focaccia nailed the consistency. Crisp outside, pillow inside. Looking forward to coming back to try more!

Amazing place! Very fresh pastries and bread! Pumpkin cake is a must-try! Also suitable for studying/working, however there’s no WiFi.

Google
Very creative pastries and cakes. I had the rye chocolate chip cookie, blueberry blue basil pop tart, and pistachio escargot. They were all great, although I would've liked the pistachio filling to be more moist/fudgy. I didn't try the coffee since my favorite coffee shop is right next to this bakery, but I did notice they had some very high quality brands like passenger available. The only real complaint was it felt like the person taking orders was trying to rush people.

Google
I was excited to try this place, but the pasties turned out to be disappointing. It’s over priced for the quality of food you received. Hopefully it was just me. Great location, nice atmosphere though.

After MUCH research, executed in the name of pure scientific discovery, and NOT ravenous gluttony, I’m ready to announce the best bakery in the city. THIS PLACE! As is my norm, I spent an unreasonable amount of money on baked goods for one person. Everything I had was amazing. With a perfect ratio of heat salt and sweet, they never failed to strike the correct balance. On a personal note, I’m a little angry about the coffee. I take great pride and brewing my own coffee at home with top-notch beans, a burr grinder and a precision electric kettle. So you can understand how infuriating it was to order a simple cup of drip coffee here, that made mine taste like crap. For an inexplicably and reliably, amazing experience, add The Bread Room to your daily routine.

Yelp
The coziest little pastry shop! I went for the Miso Mushroom hoagie, but ended up walking out with a vegan jam bar, too. Miso Mushroom hoagie - full of flavor, it didn't taste like mushrooms to me. I liked the greens mixed in and the bread was absolutely killer. Can't go wrong with a sesame roll. Vegan jam bar - a little on the dry side, but honestly not bad at all. I think dunking it in some coffee would help, but it had a crumb situation on top and the perfect amount of jam. Employees were so friendly and fast. There was a bit of a line when we got inside but it moved rather quickly. 100% worth a visit to grab some breads and other delicious pastries!

Yelp
Good addition to High Street Bakery family. It's cozy and homey. There are some seatings facing the window in front of the counter. On the other side there is a communal table and a couple of tables with chairs. All of the baked goods look scrumptious and inviting. Unique and beautifully displayed. Among others: passion fruit meringue, miso caramel apple pie, and gluten free muffins I had kouign aman, chocolate hazelnut croissant, and coffee hazelnut tartlet. Kouign aman and croissant are so crunchy and buttery. Chocolate hazelnut: it's ok, it's missing the hazelnut flavor. They have savory sandwiches too and loaves of bread

Yelp
Purchased a rye sandwich loaf and a sesame round bread. Delicious artisanal bread. Also purchased 2 pastries - a crueler and a spelt cake. Also delicious. Initially entered a pop up around the corner, next to High Street (all affiliated with the same talented and socially conscious owner - who was on hand walking thru the pop up) wonton/congee project to benefit Philly SEAMAAC. Had a bowl of authentic and scrumptious wontons. Purchased some jams and tea all to benefit a more than worthy cause. The volunteer and staff on hand couldn't have been more delightful. Her pleasantness and joy made me stay and be a patron.

Yelp
amazing!!!!! I enter thinking I will get my go treat - a ginger scone. However, as i move along the display case I can't resist trying something new. I wish I could remeber the names of the many treats I have tried but I am so caught up in their beautiful apperance I just point. The staff is very helpful and explains the ingrediants, but I contiue to rely on my point and get it method. I wish there was more seating but other than that it is perfect.
