My wife and I made our first visit to The Broad Chare for lunch, upstairs in the dining room, to celebrate my birthday, and what an excellent choice we made. We decided to mark the occasion by having the T-bone steak to share - we realised that neither of us had ever had that cut before - and I can't imagine it could be better. The meat was perfectly cooked, the blue cheese salad was delicious, it was a memorable dish. The starters were excellent as well - can't say much about the desserts because all we were capable of by that stage was lemon sorbet each! When we arrived there was only one other table occupied, but it soon filled up and was a really good atmosphere. Staff were all friendly and efficient. A bit pricy, but it was a birthday lunch and definitely worth it!

We were going to Live theatre for hubby's birthday so came here at 5.30 for a meal and it was fabulous. Bar and outside beer garden downstairs and restaurant up. Started by sharing some monkfish cheeks which were very moreish then I had halibut with samphire, clams &mussels and potatoes which was spot on. Daz doesn't often get steak as often disappointed but certainly not the case today as a beautiful medium rare steak with chips and onion rings was demolished! Good choice of beers and I has a lovely glass of pinotage With coffee to finish bill came to just over £100 with no service charge added.

Google
A lovely gastropub in a convenient location. Service was fast and professional. The oysters tasted nice and the scotch egg starter was exceptional. The steaks were also very tasty, although the fires were a little under seasoned. My biggest complaint is the price, an expensive location for Newcastle.

Google
Nice place to go for Mother’s Day lunch, lamb shoulder was tender and excellent as was the Yorkshire pudding. Left feeling full and for the quality of food it was fairly good value, choice and included amount of sides good have been better. Atmosphere was warm and welcoming however the dessert portion was very much on the smaller side

The Broad Chare is a great pub for a drink or two. I went there with some friends who usually go there on Sundays. We went there on a Saturday evening and it was busy but still not too packed. I can definitely recommend having a drink here. The staff is super friendly and they have a great variety of beers and drinks.

Google
The food was excellent, my grouse was cooked to perfection but I have to say my starter was beautiful. The drop of one star was for not having the wine we wanted from the menu. Service was very friendly though a little shaky but I put that down to possibly being some new staff members.

Stumbled on this place in a short trip up to Newcastle. Fantastic meal. Sole with mussels. Wonderfully prepared. Really well seasoned. Great sauce. Very well balanced. Excellent piece of dish cooking.

Google
The Broad Chare offers an ideal spot for a quiet drink, but it’s the food that truly steals the show. The menu strikes the perfect balance between comforting pub classics and inventive twists, showcasing the respect for tradition while embracing the modern culinary wave. The service is impeccable. Attentive without being intrusive - proving that both the staff and management take pride in making every guest feel at home. For me, The Broad Chare has remained a steadfast favorite, consistently delivering excellence whether you visit on a Tuesday dinner or a Sunday lunch. A visit here is a nod to both quality and timelessness. Thanks again for a wonderful meal.

Yelp
Lovely food, definitely a must for any foodies visiting Newcastle Prices are reasonable for the quality & quantity. Nice staff, relaxing atmosphere to enjoy your meal in peace.

Yelp
My husband and I are American and came to England wanting to try traditional English fare. We wanted so many things on their menu but settled on the pork pie (served cold), chicory salad, haggis on toast, black pudding, and for dessert Christmas pudding (served warm). Everything was flavorful and phenomenal. We each had two beers and were quite full but thoroughly satiated. My favorites were the haggis (never heard of HP sauce but theirs is delicious and a perfectly fried egg--truly hard to come by) and the black pudding: the pudding was superb but everything with it made this dish perfect--the gherkins, mashed potatoes, and cabbage. Service was quick with getting us refills on our drinks, which I greatly appreciated. We came on a Friday night around 8pm and got seated immediately. My only regret was not having enough time in Newcastle to try more of their menu! Dress is casual. My husband and I felt this was the best meal we had in England.

Yelp
Amazing! Probably one of the best meals I have had in the UK. Admittedly I ordered items that are more about the sourcing but the preparation needs to be raved about as well. All of the small details shined along with the clearly great sourcing mastermind behind this establishment. I started with the oysters. I was amazed with them their freshness and buttery taste and texture as well as a brilliant horseradish sauce that didn't overpower but rather added to the experience. As a main I had the rib-eye with a peppercorn topping. If there was any negative it only would be to the imagination of the sides which were chips /fries and onion rings with some salad leaves. But do not misunderstand me here the main star was clearly the ribeye. Not only cooked to perfection but the sourcing of the meat was incredible. This is no understatement as I eats steak multiple times a week, always ribeye and most of the time US prime. However this steak was incredible and the peppercorn sauce again did not overpower the steak but rather complimented it. I finished with the cheese plate and a glass of port. The cheese selection was spot on and I exceptionally enjoyed the blue. The chutney was probably the best accompaniment for the cheese selection. Crackers were ok and I could have used a toast but it didn't matter. Service was impeccable, even in a rushed setting it was perfect. All suggestions were spot on, never felt rushed and it always felt friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant and I would definitely come back and go out of my way to come back.

Yelp
We ate here on a Friday evening and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the vibe. The atmosphere was quite relaxed, even though the dining room was pretty full. We had oysters and crab toast to start, then the ribeye steak and steak burger, followed by the cheese plate, treacle tart, and chocolate pudding. These were some of the best oysters we've had! All in all, we had a great time. In addition the service was great (thanks Nathan!). Would definitely return!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. The chilled pea soup and pea shoot salad were simply note perfect. Great service. Super busy on a Friday night but they squeezed me in!

Yelp
Outstanding, high quality gem!! I enjoyed the walk down to the quay to find a superior selection of beers and a varied and superior menu. Then there's the service. Superlative!!! Friendly, engaging, helpful, quick but not rushing. Everything I ask. Must see!!!

Yelp
We had a great experience here. Firstly, the service is excellent - super efficient, attentive and when I asked for advice I got it and it was great advice! We had a scotch egg and the herring special to start - boyf really enjoyed the latter which came with some refreshing apples, a delightful dish. I had grilled hake with two types of mushrooms and lardo (bacon) plus I think savoy cabbage - also a special and recommended by our waiter. This was really such an interesting and pleasurable dish - the flavours and textures worked really well together even though I would never have thought mushrooms and white fish would be a good combo but the crunchiness of the vegetables plus the salty lardo created the perfect contrast. Bf had a massive pork chop (and more apple! which he also rated). We had some cheese to finish as I wanted stilcheton - it was more crumbly than I had anticipated but still nice and came with a good amount of biscuits. The Oxfordshire rollright was a really nice reblochon variation - good option. They don't have dessert wines, the only incredibly niche and only very slight negative point about this place, but we had some nice calvados, which bf had never tried before and worked perfectly with his apple-themed night, so worked out perfectly. Would love to come back here again and would strongly recommend.

Yelp
Visited:18/1/17 Food Standards Agency Rating: 5/5 I am only knocking off one star for the noise. Some of it can't be helped, some can.... I think it is due to the fact there are no soft furnishings and the wooden floor means the sound cannot be absorbed. It is not helped by a drone of music in the background that no one can actually hear, and just adds to the difficulty of being able to have a conversation. Now to the food: Four of us (starters and mains below): Beetroot Salad - £6.80 Crab Soup - £6.00 Mutton Masala - £14.50 Rib eye Steak - £20.00 Smoked Haddock - £14.00 Fishcakes - £12.50 Two glasses of red wine (Negromaro) Large - £6.35 Small - £4.40 Coffee Americano - £2.00 Sweet: Ginger Pud - £6.00 Sub-Total - £92.45 Service Charge 10% - £9.25 Total - £101.70 I was assured by the waiter that the service charge is distributed across all of the staff, hence the reason for paying. The service was good and prompt. My rib eye steak was succulent and cooked perfectly. There were few drinks on the bill as we had bought those at the bar downstairs. There is a plethora of real ales to tickle anyone's fancy. For a Wednesday night it was packed (hence the noise). We had booked the day before. I'd return with an ear trumpet to be able to hear my colleagues speak. My hearing aids were turned off as the volume control (upwards) made it even worse. Suggestion: Turn off the MUZAK

Yelp
This is a PROPER pub with better than PROPER food! It's amazing. Thanks to Yelpers who rated this highly we were able to find it. AND it's in the Michelin guide as we found out when we got there. No wonder it was fully booked for Sunday lunch, until 5pm there were going to be no tables. The waitress told us this with such regret for us so we though it was going to be the end of it until she said we could sit in the bar and order off the bar menu or a choice of the Sunday roasts! Boy were we glad we were there at 12pm because the bar on the ground floor was filled 15 minutes after we sat down! The bar menu had oysters, Atlantic prawns, pork scratchings, etc. We ordered two of each of the lamb and beef Sunday roasts - they both came with the exact sides including Yorkshire puddings for the lamb shoulder. The food came out promptly and were piping hot. The beef looked lovely and pink and the lamb was so tender it fell apart with a prod from the fork. The sides were carrot and swede mash, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, savoy cabbage and something none of us had before - peas and barley served with fresh mint! It was DELICIOUS! The whole thing, every bit of it. We were quite hungry and so we also ordered the pork scratchings and cauliflower fritters which was served with a curried mayonnaise. It was nice and crispy with tender caulifower inside and the mayo packed enough flavour to make it memorable. So, if you're planning on going to Newcastle, come to this beautiful pub! Make a booking though!

Yelp
This is an AMAZING gem hiding in Quayside. We were looking for a Sunday Roast and stopped by for lunch. They were fully booked, but we were able to get an evening reservation. The food was amazing, quick, and the staff was super helpful. If you're visiting, or even local, this is THE place to be. Downstairs has a small bar and serves food, but if you're looking for something sit-down then make a reservation and get here. . .fast. My only regret is that this was my last day in town and I couldn't return the next day. I did have a bit of trouble finding the location at first - they are actually on Broad Chare, though Google Maps led me to the wrong location.

Katherine M.

Yelp
Absolutely cracking pub! Really chilled out place to have a drink just off the beaten track of the quayside. It's definitely got a casual feel to it and you won't find overpowering music here...just the sound of people chatting and drinking as it should be in a traditional pub. Simple yet divine British pub food and more often than not you need to book a table to avoid disappointment. Sunday lunch is a particular treat I would recommend!

Mat C.

Yelp
This is one of my favourite pubs in Newcastle. It serves a great selection of beers and ciders as well as some awesome bar snacks (please try their hot scotch eggs, they're amazing! ). Their Sunday lunches are lovely too, and it's all very reasonably priced. Set back a short distance from the river side, this is the perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon drink and a spot of lunch after having visited the Quayside market on a Sunday.

Mike R.

Yelp
Excellent food, with an interesting take on traditional. Service was pleasant, if inattentive - we weren't ever offered more drinks over three courses... Tried haggis on toast, and the specials board mince and dumplings... Every one of the four of us enjoyed each of our choices. Would definitely recommend - not packed on a windy Monday night, but not dead, either

Vlad N.

Yelp
Like always they like to overcharge nothing in particular with Indian food but they can make up their minds if they're going to charge you nine dollars for two bottle of waters

Yelp
This place is absolutely delicious. We came here twice on our trip. The bar menu is wonderful for an afternoon bite or early dinner. We retuned later to dine upstairs and had another special experience. Thank you to the staff and kitchen for caring.

Chris I.

Yelp
Came here last Christmas for a drink a some bar snacks. Managed to get back for Sunday lunch today and wow it was worth the wait. Booked a table for Sunday lunch weeks ago. Was ready and waiting. Went for the daily special of Roast Beef and all the trimmings (excellent value at £12.50). It was scrummy. Service was good and attentive. Would recommend to anyone - although you need to book!

Yelp
AMAZING. I am in Newcastle for 4 days and have been to the Broad Chare twice, and my only regret is that I only went twice. Started with the Cauliflower Croquettes with curry mayonnaise. They are lightly battered/tempura pieces of cauliflower, perfectly cooked. When they arrive at the table they are HOT, so be careful. They are a great texture of crunchy and soft and the curry mayonnaise is a perfect condiment. Fishcakes for mains one night and the baked hake the next. Both were excellent. The fishcakes are a mix of fish, potatoes, herbs, and a light panko breading. They were extremely tasty. The hake was even better, flaky with a wonderful sauce (the tiny 'brown shrimp' that comes with it are little more than a garnish, I would have been happier without them). In both cases, they came with a side of potatoes (chips or boiled, not mentioned on the menu), if you prefer (as I do) they are happy to swap them for lightly steamed vegetables dressed in garlic butter. I tried the Writer's Block ale one night, it was more like a wheat beer. If you like wheat beers then you might like this more than I did. The Aspall Cyder I had the second night was more to my liking. Dry and smooth, but with enough body to be very tasty. I didn't try the desserts, but they sounded amazing. Service was excellent. The food was speedy (though it wasn't busy when I was there) and hot when delivered. The servers were attentive and eager to please. My ONLY complaint was that as the restaurant got busier (1/2 to 2/3 full) the room got uncomfortably loud. Some of it was from a particularly loud table, but the room in general was loud. I recommend going earlier, before 7, to ensure you get a table and to enjoy the meal in a quieter environment. Final note... the map on Yelp is incorrect. The location is around the corner, on Broad Chare (the name of the road).

Yelp
Went here a couple of times on a recent stay in Newcastle. They bill themselves as a "proper pub" with proper food and drink, and they are not just talking a big game. They have a good variety of British, European, and American high-end craft varieties. Think Mikkeller, Brooklyn, Sierra Nevada, as well as all of the mainstays you'd expect from a good English pub. The guy (or gal) who selects their brews has a discerning palate! The monkfish cheeks are good, but I think my absolute favorite thing was the scotch eggs. Little bundles of breakfast-themed joy. The burger was good--medium rare/pink, with just the right amount of juice running. The bun it's served on is really good, too. Fries were not much to write home about, but certainly serviceable. Finished it all up with the chocolate and salted caramel ice cream, which was also excellent. This place is not just proper, but smart too. If I were a Geordie, I'd probably end up getting absurdly fat at this joint.

Steph A.

Yelp
We stopped here for a late lunch on a drive to Edinburgh. Well worth the stop! We ordered the fish (monk cheeks) and chips and braised Oxtail (stew). Both were absolutely delicious. Would definitely return.

Paul E.

Yelp
+ Lovely out of the way pub and restaurant in the centre of Newcastle. Great selection of beers and drinks. Meat and fish heavy menu for meat lovers - not a lot on offer for non meat lovers.

Philip D.

Yelp
To call this a pub, would be a serious understatement. To call this a gastropub would make it sound to posh to what it actually has to offer. The Broad Chare is one of the most lovely 'pubs' I've ever been to and eaten. The ambiance is cozy, warm and friendly. Waiters are extremely helpful and even suggested not to take an item as we were ordering too much for two people already. It's amazing how such simple British food can be delivered so well. For the starters, we took the Scottish Egg, haggis on toast and monk-fish to share. All were absolutely amazing and mouthwatering. We were almost full but than the mains comes along. I took the Calves Liver with mash and my friend had fish. Again, no single complaints here and all was absolutely amazing. A huge selection of quality beers was also a delightful surprise. If I go back to Newcastle I will definitely stop here again. And everybody who's visiting or living in the city, and is up for outstanding British food should make a visit here. We went on a Monday night and needed to book a table for two (it was fully booked when we were there), so make sure to take that into account.

Meredith A.

Yelp
I just came to say, if you haven't gotten the lamb shoulder that "feeds five," GET IT! Good lord. We just had the most amazing meal with friends last weekend, we got the 7 hour lamb shoulder and it was absolutely phenomenal. Gorgeous, succulent, tender, falling apart meat. Go get it right now. NOW. It comes with a hilarious amount of dauphinoise potatoes that an elephant couldn't finish, and some vegetables, but the lamb is just beyond amazing. I've literally never had a bad meal here, or even a subpar bite. This is far and away the best restaurant in Newcastle, it's what all restaurants should aspire to be.

Ashleigh C.

Yelp
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it here. On first view of the menu I was a little disturbed by the crispy pig ears, although I didn't try them if they're anything like the rest of the food here I'm sure they will be delicious! There isn't a vast choice of food on the menu but I feel that sometimes that can be a good thing, so that you get straight to the point. I has the crab on toast with a side if steamed greens which all tastes so good. My partner had the burger, I didn't get offered a taste so it must have been good!! The wait staff could not have been more polite and professional. Top marks from me, can't wait to return.

Emily P.

Yelp
Had oysters and a scotch egg in the bar - food was very good.
