15 Black-Owned Chicago Restaurants Serving Up Serious Comfort Food | Eater

"You might not expect a burger spot from a radiology executive, but Michael Strotter’s The Burger Point serves up some seriously good burgers. Strotter pays attention to every ingredient: the beef is grass-fed and organic, the turkey is free-range, and even his potato chips are homemade. There are so many signature options here, whether you go for The Jersey Shore (a burger with fresh mozzarella and pepperoni on a fluffy brioche bun) or The Dirty South (with five-year Hooks aged cheddar and double-smoked bacon on a pretzel roll). You can even make your own combination with specialty add-ons like bourbon bacon jam or a cranberry reduction." - Ariel Kanter

I really like the burgers here. I would go with a single patty as the double was quite sizeable. Also, it was cooked to well done which i would suggest medium or less. Ordered the Savage and it was very tasty with the bacon, cheese and over medium fried egg. The yolk was still liquidy and added a nice creaminess to the burger. The potatoe bun held up nicely to the meat and accoutrements. This place is no-frills and modestly furnished. The staff was pleasant though a bit aloof. Kitchen though was busy and prepared food to order.

If you’re looking for a spot in Chicago that delivers flavor, size, and consistency, Burger Point absolutely deserves a visit. From the moment you walk in, there’s a relaxed and welcoming vibe that makes it clear this is a place built around comfort food done right. The menu has plenty to choose from, but a few items stand out as must-tries. The 16 oz burger is the star of the show. It’s massive, juicy, and cooked to perfection—everything you’d expect from a burger that size but rarely get in reality. The seasoning is bold without being overwhelming, and the toppings are fresh, complementing the meat rather than competing with it. Each bite feels indulgent, yet balanced enough that you actually want to finish the whole thing. The chicken sandwich is another highlight. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and paired with just the right amount of sauce and crunch, it’s one of those sandwiches that hits every note. It’s not just “good for a chicken sandwich”—it’s the kind you’d go back for again and again. And then there are the wings. Flavor-packed, with the perfect balance of crispiness and sauciness, they’re a crowd-pleaser whether you’re there with friends or flying solo. They’ve got that addictive quality where you think you’ll stop at a couple, but suddenly you’re polishing off the basket. Altogether, Burger Point delivers exactly what you want in a neighborhood spot: hearty food, generous portions, and a laid-back atmosphere that makes you feel at home. It’s the kind of place where every dish tastes like it was made with care. If you’re in Chicago and craving comfort food with big flavor, Burger Point is absolutely worth the stop.

Mike was amazing he was kind and took the time to tell us about his burgers and was looking forward to making sure we were happy. I had the American classic GLUTEN FREE my husband had a number 17. Delicious courteous and an all around great experience for both taste buds and time. Thanks again Mike for making something special and a cool conversation!

I came and ordered the saigon jonny chicken burger and fries. The sandwich had a little kick and the fries were crispy and seasoned right. I had to ask for napkins twice but it was no big deal. The place is casual and kind of quiet which I liked. Nothing really stood out but it was a decent meal. I could see myself coming back on a lazy weekend.

Google
This place is great. Pictured here is "the crunch" ordered medium well and "the burger point double" in medium well. The wait time is about 10 minutes because they cook it as you order it. The taste of the burger is amazing and juicy. They will typically have a sports game on at the same time if you plan to eat indoors. Quiet space too. A small sized order of fries is enough for 2 people. Good small date place with your significant other

Google
Called in my order on Saturday, 6/1 at around 12:30pm. The lady who answered the phone was pleasant. There were no parks in front of this location. I had to park in the yellow to wait for my food. My son went in to pick up. He mentioned that it's small on the inside, about 4 tables. We ordered The Classic and The Dirty South medium well with a large fry with sea salt. The fries were enough for the both of us. They were piping hot and freshly cut. The Classic burger was really good. It was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. My only complaint is that the lettuce was brown and wilted. I couldn't tell if they put it on the burger that way or if it came from the steam of being in the bag for the 20 min ride home. It was very slimy, and I hated it. Pics attached. The Dirty South burger was great, too. Cooked perfectly and seasoned well. The pretzel bun was different. Not my favorite choice for a burger. On a potato bun, I'd like it more. All in all, I'd def go back. The burgers are solid and no complaints about the service. The price was on the higher end, but the quality matched. I spent $29.10.

Google
Hands down the best burger joint in South Loop! Everything's fresh and tasty, and you can customize your burger. The picture is "The classic" burger with sweet potatoes, 10/10. Highly recommended ♥️

Google
I wished I lived in Chicago because this would be a frequented spot! The food was absolutely INCREDIBLE! There are plenty of options to choose from, and the two we ended up with were seriously some of the best burgers we've ever had. Quality meat and ingredients! We also got a large order of chili cheese fries. The chili was seriously so flavorful, along with the cheese. The portion was definitely large - could have gotten the smaller order. The staff was very welcoming, kind, and accommodating as well! We felt at ease in their space and genuinely welcomed. I would 1000% recommend this place to someone looking for a gem in downtown. We ate here then walked to Soldier Field for a soccer game. We hope to be back sooner rather than later!

Yelp
Great service, awesome burgers! The wings were also great! I love a place that does a few things well - and this is a spot like that.
google avatar

Yelp
We had a quick dinner here before heading to Soldier Field. We got lucky and were able to get a table. I had the Burger Point smash burger (double patty, egg, bacon). Very good smash burger. I liked the jalopeno-pickle relish. Yum We also ordered the salt-n-vinegar chips on a stick. They were super good. Not much salt-n-vinegar, but still good. The burgers came out slow, and people were waiting for their food. I would not call it a grab-n-go. The flow (the register and the food is coming out in the same place) is wonky. It looks like they could double the amount of seating.

Yelp
Imagine getting your taste buds ready for a nice juicy burger only to arrive and be disrespected by the staff. I was referred to this place by a friend and I was told that it was minority ran, so I felt good to give back. The most ignorant staff I have ever experienced, the place was practically empty and they were moving in slow motion. The tatted up cashier with dreads walked away from the register when it was time for me to order, she said she was on break, she said it twice. "Luckily I'm on break" There was no one there to relieve her, it was just her and the cook. She made the statement about being on break directly after the cook said he gave his 2 week notice and he only had 1 week left. I felt so disrespected that we walked out! I hope to return when the owner is in, I was told he provides the best service.

Yelp
First place I tried for my first time in Chicago and it did not disappoint. Best burger I've had in a while (The Classic). Workers are great and have a great sense of humor. You can feel how good the food is going to be just stepping inside. Only negative, I wasn't crazy about the fries
google avatar

Micah K.

Yelp
In the city full of good restaurants, I'm surprised that I have not been to this awesome burger restaurant yet. With such a wide variety of burgers, there's literally something for everyone. And both burgers that I tried, were absolutely amazing. The service is not necessarily fast because everything is cooked to order. As long as you keep that in mind, this is a great place for lunch. Especially if you order ahead. Very clean yet not too large and intimidating, the space is perfect for a lunch or dinner crowd.

Yelp
Having a craving for a really good burger and a milkshake. Didn't feel like driving too far and didn't want to fight with street parking. Ordered two classic burgers, one order of burger egg rolls, an order of Asian wings and an order of fries. They do not sell milkshakes. The lady on the register was nice enough and I didn't have to wait too long for the food. I enjoyed everything but the wings. They were not seasoned or crispy. The sauce on the wings was good though.
google avatar

Aaliyah L.

Yelp
10/10 experience. These were some of the best burgers I've ever tried. The turkey burger was perfectly seasoned and they have so many options to build your own perfect burger if you want. There's a good amount of seating area, but most do takeout/pickup orders. Service was amazing. Michael, the owner, was super personable and humble. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about him and his story. Also, the old bay fries with a cup of cheese is a must!!
google avatar

Jon R.

Yelp
First off I gotta say the burger and hot dog choices here are vast! Secondly whatever you order you can't go wrong they are all amazing. This place is a south loop gem but even if you live in a different neighborhood it's worth the trip to eat here. When you eat here not only will your taste buds and appetite be satisfied but you can feel good that you are supporting a locally owned and operated business. Everytime I've stopped in, which is more than a few times, I've seen the owner working.

Yelp
I stopped by late in the afternoon after passing this place several times on my walks. They have an in-house made veggie burger that caught my eye. I ordered the veggie burger with fries seasoned with truffle salt. They allowed me to make modifications to my burger, such as using Texas toast instead of a wheat bun. My burger was topped with avocado, cheese, lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, and onions. I waited about 15 to 20 minutes for my food, which was reasonable given all the modifications. The restaurant is located right across the street from a high school, so it can get a bit noisy after 3 PM when students come over to get food. Fortunately, I arrived just before the teenage rush.

Yelp
I've lived in the neighborhood for years and hadn't tried the Burger Point until this year. Wow, I was so disappointed that I hadn't been there sooner. They have so many creative burger options, in addition to the classics. They also have some really good chicken sandwiches and wings. They have great fries and sweet potato fries too. The prices are crazy reasonable and the staff is super helpful because sometimes it's hard to make a decision when everything on the menu sounds so good.

Ramone P.

Yelp
I've been knowing about, and driving past this restaurant for years and I finally got a chance to try them out. Their customer was great. The lady at the register was very helpful and patient with me. Letting me know how they accommodate to the customer, how you can customize any burger the way you want, and how everything is fresh and cooked to order. The eating area was clean, with great window seats. I tried the #10- (The Dirty South). In my opinion it just needed a little more BBQ sauce, but everything about The burger was good. I'll be back to try other items from the menu. I recommend others check this spot.

Yelp
The Burger Point: on point for veggie burgers! Food: custom veggie patty (vs pre-made name brand party) is substantial and keeps it shape, even if or when it crumbles. It's formed from chunks of vegetables, mostly potatoes, I believe. Build your own burgers and pretzel bun options are awesome! Hand cut style fries are a generous portion and also very good. Are burgers the point of The Burger Point? Yes, they are, but don't count out the fries. Service: go to the counter to order and pick up your food: minimal, but pleasant. They knew what they were doing. Ambiance: not much: a few tables, a quiet TV and it's peaceful enough to feel enjoyable. It's unassuming. Random note: it looks dim from the outside and I almost thought that it was closed, walking by, so don't let that fake you out. It might be open, unless you're staggering by at 4 am. Then it's probably actually closed. ;-)

Yelp
Family owned. The father and son are great people and the burgers are always top quality. They have a great variety of different burgers, wing, fries but everything is made fresh. Great operation!

Halle S.

Yelp
I hope my experience is a one off thing, because the other reviews here are raving. However: my burger was literally raw lol. The guy at the register was on the phone for probably 5-10 minutes while a line formed, and nobody else in the kitchen did anything (and it was dead silent in there? Kind of off-putting but it's okay). Not only was my burger raw but the fries were pre-cooked and then dunked in oil before they sent them home with us. I ate like half the burger before I noticed it was as raw as it is, so I hope I don't get sick before going back to work tomorrow :')

Yelp
Burger Point is hands down one of my favorite spots in Chicago for a burger. The owner is incredibly welcoming and kind, which adds to the overall experience every time I visit. The food here is top-notch, and you can tell that everything is made with care. I have to give a special shoutout to the wings--they're some of the best in the city, in my opinion. As for the burgers, my go-to favorites are the veggie burger (great recipe and not a prepackaged thing),, the Burger Point, the Saigon Jonny, and the Gobbler. One thing to keep in mind is that the food is made to order, so there might be a bit of a wait. It is worth it.

Yelp
Was on the hunt for a burger this past weekend, as this was my cheat weekend. The Burger Point was my landing spot. Ordered a double cheeseburger with fries. The burger reminded me of hamburgers I bought from a hole in the wall during my university days. I got it medium well, and it came medium well, complete with enough juice that it wasn't dry. I do not like burgers near raw, Sam I Am. Big ups on the service during the ordering process and on follow-up after I had feasted on the burger sans extra condiments. I'm not a fan of gourmet burgers because presentation shouldn't be better than flavor. The Burger Point was just good.
google avatar

Jaya M.

Yelp
Quite possibly the worst turkey burger I have ever had. I ordered the God Father. The patty was dry, the lettuce was soggy and the bread was hard. The aoli was not plentiful and the mushrooms were good. I also had the sweet potato fries with salt and they were soggy and chewy. They came with a honey mustard sauce that salvaged them a bit. Overall, VERY underwhelming

Yelp
An absolute gem!!! One of our favorite burgers in the city. The pretzel bun and fries are fantastic. Always fresh and delicious. The owner is also so kind! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Lauren K.

Yelp
There are so many options to choose from that I couldn't decide. Ended up doing The Dirty South which was delicious. The Pretzel bun was fluffy and light. The burger was cooked perfectly. The fries were a lot and would definitely recommend asking for salt. I got Truffle salt which was delicious but my boyfriend did not ask for specific salt or anything and could taste the difference. Even if don't want truffle salt, make sure to mention sea salt. The man taking our order (assume the manager/owner) was super friendly, helpful and genuine. You can tell he enjoys his job and makes the experience better than going to a bigger chain. Will definitely be going back to try all the burger options as they are unique and have a fun spin to each one.

Yelp
Great counter service; great food. Best as pick-up/delivery, not dine-in but they do have a few tables for dine-in. I love the no flour hot wings

Yelp
8/4/2023--After having this place saved for a while and my co-worker solidifying the fact, I need to try this place. I went straight after work, on a Saturday evening. There are plenty of flavor profiles to choose from, or you can create your own. You can choose 100% grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, free-range turkey, or 100% from scratch veggie. Everything is customizable from the bread, cheese, and toppings. The staff was very patient with me given all the options I had to choose from. I kept it simple. I had The Classic. Made with a turkey burger. It was juicy, fresh, and satisfying. The texture was solid, and the flavor was there. When it comes to turkey burgers, they're not all created equal. The fries were hand cut. They weren't too hard or too soft. The crisp to softness ratio was just right. I dined in. Aside from beverages that needed to be stocked, it was clean (including the restroom) and spacious for the number of people seated. The parking is metered. The wait time is fair, considering all items are made to order, and they have a steady stream of pick-up orders. Definitely, adding this place to my list of go-to options for a turkey burger.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious hot dog - Spanish Revolution. Family got the Crunch burger - 2 patties bacon huge

Yelp
Really good burgers chicken wings done right. Fried then dipped in your sauce of choice

Alecia G.

Yelp
Soooo good! I ordered the sampler with a cheeseburger, 3 bbq wings, and fries. Everything was delicious! The cheeseburger was my favorite and you can tell the fries are cut in-house. I ordered online for pickup and my food was still hot and fresh by the time I walked home. Service was very friendly too. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Faria M.

Yelp
A solid South Loop destination for all your burger, fry & wing cravings (which I have often :) Located just below W 18th & State St, it was fairly easy to get via CTA bus. They are currently open for takeout orders & delivery only. I got the sampler (which comes with a classic 4 oz burger, 3 wings and handcut fries). It was decent sized meal for the price, and I enjoyed being able to taste both the burger and wings. Wish I would've gotten dipping sauce on the side for the wings, but appreciated the different variety of sauces + dry rub options. Burger point also has a lot of unique, curated burgers with fun toppings and sauces on their menu as well. Everything was fresh and the meat is grass fed. Much better than going to a fast food joint, and it's locally owned!
google avatar

Ravi S.

Yelp
One of Chicago's absolutely best burger places also has a great chicken sandwich? What more do you really need to know? I could tell you that there burger is award winning, but you should already know that. I could tell you're they're all grass fed, but come on, you should already be there let's be honest The classic Soon to be famous buttermilk chicken sandwich Insta: @holi_ravi_oli

Yelp
Fantastic burgers and an awesome staff...everyone was friendly. They also had a pretty good gluten free bun!
google avatar

Yelp
This is our first time visiting and the Burger Point did not disappoint. The burgers were fresh and delicious. Service was friendly and expeditious. Highly recommend for a quick and tasty meal. Ordered : Crunchy Burger, Dirty South, Fries.

Yelp
Our experience here was great. The food was fresh and so delicious, and the service was great. We had the #2 and #10 and both were so go The workers were friendly and our food came fast. We will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
We were in the area and decided to grab some lunch and I am glad we stopped in. They have plenty of burger options to satisfy anyone's needs. The food is cooked fresh to order so it's not fast but at least it comes out hot. The service was good considering you just order at the counter and then pick up your food when its ready. The place was clean with one tv that had football on so that's a positive. Definitely a place to check out if you are in the area.

Yelp
What an awesome find! Found through Chicago Burger Bible Instagram page. Also, exceptionally happy to know this is a Black Owned Business. Located South Loop - State street. Ordering process super easy through Yelp, all the options are listed; cheeses (holy balls so many cheeses!) meat patties (grass fed beef, chicken, Turkey, veggie), toppings and sauces (housemade ketchup!) We ordered, Gobfather (chipotle aioli has some kick!) Dirty Southside, fries and wings. Prices are awesome, portions are perfect, pickup service was really nice! Takeout presentation was decent (wish lettuce was served on the side). My husband did say his burger was a little dry, but he did order med well. He thinks if he ordered med next time, it would be juicier. There will be a next time for sure! Thank you for being open during a pandemic!

Eleanore S.

Yelp
Had a carryout order this evening from here. This is not my first time here and I must say I have never been disappointed. Their food is excellent. The service is great. I highly recommend this place if you're in the area.

Brianna W.

Yelp
Service is always quick and pleasant. My boyfriend and I visit often when we're craving something hefty. Burgers are always spot on and are DELICIOUS. Fries are great too with seasonings, deserves 5 stars. Such an underrated burger place.

Peter C.

Yelp
This burger was amazing! The fries, so GOOD!!!And the staff definitely were very accommodating and pleasant. I would definitely come again if in Chicago again.

Juliet T.

Yelp
The regular burgers were great but I have to compliment the veggie burger here. Our vegetarian really wanted a veggie burger, but she's sick of the same old Impossible Burger that everyone serves (and that we can easily make at home). This place actually makes their own veggie burgers -- with actual vegetables, not some weird protein goo. Our vegetarian said it was the best she's ever had!

Cassandra P.

Yelp
Amazing burgers and food! service is outstandin! and ambiance is that of a corner burger place which it is! but definitely worth going! From out of town but when I get to Chicago it's on my list!
google avatar

Edwin W.

Yelp
Ill just let the picture speak for itself. Double patty with $2 extra for 5 year aged cheddar (let me know if you can see it cause I couldn't)

Nikki B.

Yelp
Amazing burger joint. We go about one a week. My fav is the salmon burger- never disappoint! Treat yourself to a good burger .

Yelp
I got takeout from this place the other night, and I was really happy with my order. It's really nice to have found a local burger place to support that meets all of my burgery needs! Last night my partner and I each got a burger and a combo with a large fry - with tip, it was between 30-35 bucks. Not too bad to support local. I got the mushroom burger and added lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles on it because I do like the traditional toppings array. I wish I would have noticed that the burger didn't come with any condiments, but luckily I was eating it at home so I could add mustard and stuff. Just something to make sure to add next time! The burger was well cooked, a nice size for getting a single (6oz), and I was definitely full afterwards! The fries were also tasty, but I'm looking forward to crisping them up a bit more when we rewarm the leftovers :) Overall, solid burger place and I'm looking forward to trying something different when I return!

Deepthi G.

Yelp
This place is so great!!! I mistakenly put my food order in wrong I called the store and the owner was so kind enough to remake my food and take it to me!! If you aren't going for the amazing food you need to go for their hospitality!! Btw the fries with truffle salt are so amazing!!! 10/10
google avatar

Ken S.

Yelp
Really great burgers! House made fries. Fast delivery. Thick, crispy bacon on the classic.
google avatar

Mz C.

Yelp
Foto doesn't do it justice, single patty (can make it a double) burgers, Cooked to order and modify if you wish. Had the classic & dirty south with fries. All made fresh to order. Support local.
google avatar

Nikyta N.

Yelp
I really love their hot dogs and wings. The garlic hot wings are my favorite. The Dirty South burger and chili cheese fries are also very good. Customer service is always good. I had problems using Chos each time I ordered, other than that I would definitely recommend trying this place, and try something different each time.

Jeannine W.

Yelp
I had the "gob" turkey burger along with sweet potato fries. Both were really good. The service was good and the restaurant was nice and clean.

Yelp
In town with my son and some young men for a volleyball tourney. We were looking for high calorie food to replenish there energy for the next day. We found The Burger Point right by where we were staying. We rolled in at 8:30 on a Saturday night, they close at 9. Service was great. Good, good people. The burgers, wings and fries were excellent! I had the All American (classic bacon cheese burger). Excellent. Requested Medium Rare, and that is the way it came out, cooked just right. Hand made patty, fresh bun, fresh condiments. The serving size was generous. The fries were hand cut and delicious. Really a great meal for a very far price. Highly recommend. Thanks

Mona R.

Yelp
Ok so this review is about a year overdue. After spending several days in Chicago searching desperately for a good place to eat near McCormick Place, i found this and wow, I was so glad I did. It was THE BEST food we had during our entire stay. We were 6, and each of us ordered something different. Every single one of us loved our meal. I had the salmon burger (forgot the fancy menu name) and I just wanted to stay hungry so I could keep eating!! It was perfectly cooked (not dry at all) and sooooo juicy and flavorful. The best thing about our visit though was the service. I'm not sure if he was the owner, but his smile was soooo friendly and welcoming and gracious and kind and and... We are back in Chicago this year and I've literally been counting down the minutes until we eat there again. Absolutely the best restaurant in town!

Yelp
Service was great, they gave a time, and food was ready within the timeframe. Location was clean, easy to find parking, and they have a lot of options. Had the turkey burger with fries. It was delicious and I recommend.

Yelp
Food is fresh and hot and on point all the time. Chili and burgers always good, customer service always decent

Yelp
Great food, great service, clean environment. Also grass feed beef! Yum! I would go again! They also have cookies and cake that are home made and bomb.
