The 16 Best Restaurants in Berkeley

"As one of the East Bay’s premier practitioners of the art of plant-based faux meat, the Butcher’s Son has built up a huge following for its lineup of “meaty” sandwiches — takes on everything from a classic chopped cheese to a Reuben to chicken parm, all made with faux meat products developed and produced in-house. There are some gluten-free dishes available on the menu, and the weekend brunch is also popular with diners." - Dianne de Guzman

20 Best East Bay Vegan Restaurants | Eater SF

"A name suggesting a tragic folk song belies a robust menu of deli regulars — macaroni salad, cold-cut hoagies, and high-quality housemade faux meat sold by the pound. The place gets pretty packed for brunch, but good things come to those who wait, which in this case includes vegan buffalo bacon fried chicken ranch sandwiches and a fairly exceptional East Coast–style grinder. Recently moved into a larger space, the Butcher’s Son now includes a robust market for takeaway items." - Eater Staff

The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Downtown Berkeley - Eater SF

"Probably the most popular vegan restaurant in the Bay Area, The Butcher’s Son makes its own faux-meats and cheeses for its loaded deli sandwiches, from buffalo bacon ranch fried chicken to hot roast beef with French onion dip. Brunch draws big crowds, too, and the restaurant also stocks a small market area so folks can make their own vegan creations at home." - Janelle Bitker

This place is a vegan’s paradise! My go-to brunch and lunch place for the weekend in Berkeley! Can’t say enough good things. The vegan steak and egg sandwich on a hoagie roll is probably my favorite item on the menu (but I’ve never had anything I didn’t like here). The Reuben sandwich is also top notch, but on the richer side (taste wise). Basically, everything is good…just go…try it for yourself…and become just as obsessed! Also worth noting, they had a ton of case items that you can buy for home. Everything from desserts, sauces, snacks, vegan meats, and vegan cheese. They even carry the Climax vegan blue cheese that made headlines for causing disruption in the dairy blue cheese market. They have plenty of indoor seating as well as a beautiful private patio in the rear of the building. The staff do a great job of keeping the place clean and I’ve always left satisfied.

Ah, I do appreciate that this is a dedicated vegan restaurant, but for us, it just was miss. My aunt (not vegan/plant-based) didn’t enjoy the fried “chicken” that she order on her Caesar salad. I tasted it and understood why, it had that weird , spongy, seitan texture. The salad alone is good because their dressing is excellent. I ordered the mozzarella sticks and Jalapeños Business. The inside of the mozzarella sticks didn’t give the cheesy pull that I’ve found at some other spots, it was more cakey. The marinara and breading was tasty, but I did not care for the cashew cheese’s texture. The flavor of the Jalapeño Business was good, but the texture was a miss for me. The highlight of the meal, was the pickle; they have some of the best pickles. For the two of us, we were definitely disappointed with the meal. I don’t see me trying this spot again; not willing to spend $65 on a meal that was so dissatisfying.

Google
Love this all vegan sandwich place! pricey ( like everything else these days ) but worthy indulgence once in a while. tried pastrami Rueben was phenomenal. The jackfruit sandwich was just ok. kale salad with Jackfruit was good but my absolute favorite is the pastrami Reuben!

Google
Solid vegan eats, with a large variety of fun and exciting options like fish bites, lobster roll, garlic parm fries, and chicken parm sandwich. Overall as a carnivore, I did enjoy my meal and would recommend everyone give these fun meat alternatives a try.

Google
I recently visited a vegan deli in Berkeley. Their plant-based Reuben sandwich was a revelation—savory, satisfying, and indistinguishable from its traditional counterpart. The ambiance was casual and inviting, perfect for a relaxed meal. However, the wait time during peak hours was longer than expected, and seating was somewhat limited. Despite these minor inconveniences, the quality and taste of the food made it a memorable experience

Google
Absolutely delicious all veggie menu, with free coffee to boot! The veggie meat and sandwiches have wonderful flavor, the pickles are excellent, and the service is fast! The portion sizes are large and very filling so you’ll definitely have leftovers to finish later.

6/19/2025 For the 2nd time I got the gyro sandwich without lettuce on gyro flatbread and got more onions than usual plus i was given extra tziki sauce I told my mom that Weird Al goes to Butcher's daughter in LA. I surmised Weird AL was a vegan by the 1989 album and movie soundtrack in UHF where Weird Al says that eggs are liquid chickens implying that Weird Al is vegan. I saw there were three quiches cooked and on the counter. This time I noticed the carafe that says TIMELESS COFFEE on it and it reminded to get the vegan cross aints on Piedmont Ave in Oakland at the Timeless Coffee just around the corner from where I live. I finally got to eat here and got the pickles and fried chicken sandwich. The cafeteria burger pickles were too chewy and salty for me, next time I would eat them on the side. I should have let the sandwich cool down because I couldn't really taste the flavors and all that sauce. I want to eat it again soon! The chicken Parm sandwich is big enough for 2. There is plenty of setting in back of the restaurant in the courtyard shared with a neighboring restaurant. hello Reginice I'll like your review if you like my review. I can't add more photos from today of my gyro sandwhich with be'ef instead of chick'n. Actually I noticed that you got 2 stars out of 5 and i feel this rating is rude and unappreciative even elitist given that this is in Berkeley near a famous public uni. Not all restaurants have really good everything on the menu is not equally good. The cheezesticks you will just have to wait until the inventor of vegan cheeze that melts the way we want it to for pizza comes out of west Africa Senegal I believe. Your mom was super silly to not order something else. Of course the chick'n pieces for your moms salad wasn't going to be that good. Obviously you should have ordered something else or asked more questions instead of being like that. Okay its Juneteenth and I have to write a letter to my friend Stewie and the food camper trailer to go vegan veganize so they can sell more orders. We are in solidarity as vegan restaurants for the most part. Eating rabbit food isn't my thing so I'm thankful for mocks meats. And I don't have a car to shuttle myself around to get here easy peasy unlike some people

Google
Amazing vegan food! Stopped here twice in one weekend as we were visiting from Toronto, the food is so good and the portions are huge! Our favourite ended up being the big fat Greek sandwich but all were delicious especially the garlic fries. Can’t wait to come back!

Yelp
Love this place! I went here one time after a gig and have been dying to try them for a while! I had their mozzarella sticks, chick'n Caesar sandwich, and cannoli. All were out of this world incredible! The only gripe with this place is the parking, as it can be a challenge, but there are spots nearby, so prepare to walk. Other than that, great place. They also do holiday meals and I love their Shepherds pie and stuffing!

Yelp
Came back to the Butchers son with my roommate during Saturday Brunch. They had the patio open so which there were a lot of people, the store was not crowded and it was easy to find a seat. So you order before you sit (which I prefer) and then grab your own water/coffee (which is included in your meal and comes with oat, soy milk, or no milk). Every thing aside from bringing out the food is pretty self serve. We went for the Philly style steak sandwich and the egg and steak hoagie. Both seem to use something like Seitan (but I'm not sure) for their meat. The portions of these two were huge and the one issue I have is that you get full super fast but also hungry really fast. Doesn't seem like enough protein to keep you satiated for long. Well good thing the portions are large so you can save for later. I think the chopped cheese was better than the egg and steak because of the lettuce and tomato adding a nice crunch/freshness (in my opinion that could add some more). It also has a very creamy sauce. The tofu scramble on the egg and steak was ok but not my favorite. It didn't stay in the sandwich and was quite messy but overall not too bad flavor wise. Of course where they shine is their fake meats and I thought bought were super tasty and realistic!

Yelp
It's great to have established vegan options. Wish that the menu item names reflected non-meat nature, rather than being called by the same name as their animal-product-containing counterparts. For example, the Ruben sandwich or ricotta cheese. Note to self (and others) : eat the food in the restaurant when it's piping hot. Our selections did not fare well when we got it to-go. Once cooled down, it lost its appeal, even rewarmed in an air-fryer. Textures and flavors changed for the worse. The woman who took our order was a superb performer!

Yelp
Can't believe it's been that long since last review. Not much had changed with the overall establishment. Killer Blat was chicken mostly, pulled high with lettuce tomato and peppers on toasted bread with avocado spread. Hard to find the bacon and flavor but still pretty decent. Messy to deal with and high stacked for small mouths. Somehow managed to plow through. Add on fries w with crispy and thin the way I like. Don't skip the pickle, free on request. A real deli style pickle, crunchy and sour. Nice and quiet since it was a late 3pm lunch. Quick service and friendly greeting.

Yelp
Yes. Yes. Yes. HUGE fan of everything The Butcher's Son makes! The jalapeño business is one of my all time favorite sandwiches. I recently tried their house made New York Cheesecake and was blown away by how authentic and delicious it was. All their sides are amazing as well. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu!

Yelp
The vegan chicken was rubbery awful The actual ingredients are good but the vegan meat is rubbery the fried chicken

Yelp
Checked out The Butcher's Son after having heard about it and us being in the area for Bizerkeley Food Fest. We escaped the lines to find a good meal and they absolutely did not disappoint. Their sandwich selection here was incredibly extensive that it made it hard to choose. I ultimately with their Fried Chicken Caesar with Garlic Fries ($20) and had a humongous, crispy plant-based chicken sandwich with all the salad's fixings you could ask for. The sandwich was so big that I ended up saving 1/3 of it for dinner and I sit here still feeling pretty full. My friend's also enjoyed their two sandwiches - one got the BLAT and another a Chicken Bagel Sandwich. Oh, and the free coffee and water stations were both nice touches to include. Slightly knocking off a star only because I noticed the amount of garlic fries I got was not a lot when I scroll through pics from earlier this year - man, people's plates were JAMMED with fries but mine pale in comparison lol. They're still good though!

Yelp
I came to The Butchers Son a few years back with my friend Jinsol when we were both in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley. We had a habit of trying out different restaurants together, and this was one of her picks. We arrived to find a medium length line and lots of people dining at the restaurant. As we were waiting in line and nearing the counter, I noticed a Lorde song was playing, "A World Alone". We placed our orders and waited less time for our items, we ordered to-go, than we did in line. When we got our food we decided to walk to campus and eat on one of the grass lawns. Our meals were vegan and neither of us had problems with the proteins we selected. I went with a steak and eggs sandwich that was served open-faced, so I could eat it with fork and knife. The flavors melded well and were memorable, even now a few years later. Serving size was large and just right.

Yelp
Y'all the Crispy Skin Vegan Turkey.... chile let me tell you.. I am a black and I say that because a bunch of folks were bragging about the flavorful faux turkey but I was neevouussss! Like of example, Oakland was names city with bets f package delivery for my other stuff I'm black and I said that because a bunch of folks were bragging about the flavor for turkey, but I was nervous because her names were Chad Amy, but I was nervous, but I was nervous... so I bought a faux turkey and baked it for 1 hour for my mom, and my hubby and I just tasted it, and OMG It's so bomb! Doesn't have a weird flavor or aftertaste! Matter fact, nobody would notice that this isn't meat. Would always buy for my mom or company moving forward!

Yelp
Vegan or not, these are some serious sandwiches. They are huge and full of tasty fillings. The yee-ro and Reuben were off the hook. The French fries were very fresh and made from fresh potatoes, crispy and delicious. The Banh Mi was tasty but not really a traditional Banh mi, our only disappointment. They had a free water and coffee station. Prices are very fair and staff were friendly and helpful. They have a good amount of indoor seating and a beautiful covered patio. This is the perfect spot to grab a bite before or after your concert at the Freight and Salvage which is only a few blocks away.

Yelp
The Butcher & Son is a vegan hot spot for sandwiches. I came years ago so was looking forward to revisiting with my friend. Similar to any other deli, you order and pay at the counter. There are several tables inside and outside. As well as a pastry case and items for grab-and-go. We chose to dine inside and our food was brought to us swiftly. Water and other items are self-serve. I was thrilled to finally get my hands on foods that I no longer eat, but now can since it's made vegan! One Killer BLTA and Garlic Fries for me and a Buffalo Fried Chicken and Fried Mozzarella for my friend. First off, portions are gigantic and quite filling, it can get messy too. I loved the sandwich as it was hearty, creamy, and fresh. My friend enjoyed hers and we both agreed we'd come back. Vegans and non-vegans can rejoice at this alternative and equally delicious deli. If you're plant-based, this is a great spot for a twist on traditional sandwiches. For those who aren't vegan, textures and flavors may not be the same but are still enjoyable. Find them off University Ave. with street and metered parking in the neighborhood.

Yelp
With my daughter in town for the holidays. We came here for lunch. This place has a great selection of different sandwiches. It's not always easy to find vegan options for her. The staff is friendly, and when we found a table ,a lady quickly bused and wiped down the table. Didn't realize that there's plenty of seating outside in the back. We got a huge panko crusted squash and a stuffed gyro.

Yelp
I ordered the fried chicken with pickles sandwich which was absolutely delicious! One of the best vegan chicken sandwiches I've ever had. they had a lot of other interesting items on the menu which I would love to try on a future revisit.

Yelp
I had heard about the butcher son deli for a while (actually my girlfriend mentioned it to me pretty early on when we started dating) but I finally had the opportunity to go earlier today. He stopped by around 2 PM on a Saturday and the place was fairly busy. The restaurant itself spacious with both indoor seating and plenty of outdoor seating. Ordering is done at the front, and you're given a number which is used for service to bring your food . For our meal, my girlfriend and I ordered a chopped cheese sandwich, a buffalo chicken sandwich in order of mozzarella sticks, and the bacon salad . We were able to find seating outside and food came out within 10 minutes or so. Everything we had was pretty solid - the macaroni salad was surprisingly good. I'm not sure what they uses their mayo alternative, but whatever it was hit the spot. I personally didn't get much of the taste, but whatever they use is the alternate definitely had the right texture. Mozzarella sticks were... Interesting. While the texture on the exterior was perfect (crispy, and fried to perfection) the interior felt more like a fried polenta or mashed potato filling. There was no pool whatsoever, but the taste of it was pretty good especially paired with marinara sauce. For the Buffalo chicken sandwich was the highlight of the meal - I believe they use seitan as their meat alternative and it really does a good job of providing the same bite as a chicken breast. The buffalo sauce coating seep very nicely into the fried batter of the chicken and the ranch they made was incredible. The chop cheese was also pretty solid . The caramelized onions and meat alternative definitely carried the meal the alternative while good was a little overbearing, especially in the middle of the sandwich when they happen to be a huge glob of it. I personally wouldn't order next time, but I could see why people may like it. All in all, the Butcher's son provides solid vegetarian and vegans alternatives to a lot of different foods that may not normally be available for those diets. I definitely had fun with this meal and would be very excited to come here again and try other things (the chicken fried tofu comes to mind) 4/5

Yelp
I've been meaning to go to the Butcher's Son for a while, and glad I finally got the chance to do so. I knew they served vegan dishes, but now I understand they are known for sandwiches! I decided on getting a Pastrami Ruben before ordering at the counter. Service was very quick, and we are given a number and free to find a seat anywhere. They have a beautiful outdoor area where I sat at. My friend got a Smoked Barbecue Pork sandwich. The Pastrami Ruben was really flavorful! Of course, I do not believe the texture of the "meat" compares to pastrami, but it was very strong in sauerkraut which I enjoyed. The Smoked Barbecue Pork was also really good. From the small piece I tasted, the barbecue flavor was delicious and paired well with the coleslaw for the sandwich. We also tried a blueberry cheesecake slice. It wasn't our favorite, it is very hard to replicate cheesecake without cream cheese and eggs. But I tasted a strong cashew flavor (maybe they used that as a substitute) and it was pleasant! Just wasn't my favorite cheesecake in the world. I do like the lemon zest added to the top though. I do want to come again and try more sandwich flavors!

Yelp
This place never disappoints! Their food is always absolutely delicious, tastes like "the real thing", & is 100% vegan! I've made sure to bring all of my non-vegan friends & family here & they've also been very impressed. The line can get a bit long, so ordering ahead or being patient is key. Lots of outdoor, peaceful seating, tons of menu options, & something for everyone. Limited wine & beer selection, but that's not what this place is about any way. Highly recommend!

Yelp
THE BUTCHER'S SON IS VEGAN Y'ALL. Such a clever name and I really should have paid more attention to the menu. I thought that this place served partial vegan items cause their menu had "chicken" and "bacon" and "eggs." I wish that they put quotation marks or a disclaimer but that's on me for not clarifying or paying attention. I'm a carnivore but that doesn't mean I don't love trying vegan food. But this just didn't hit. I was highly disappointed. When our meal came I actually asked why my bacon looked a little undercooked only to realize, everything was vegan. I ordered the fried chicken bagelwich which was a brunch weekend only item. Everything was just so tough, thick, and chewy. Like a workout to literally chew everything. My jaw hurt. It looks the part but the flavor was lacking. I also was only able to eat half and ya girl was starving so that's saying a lot. My boyfriend ordered the bacon cheeseburger with a side of garlic fries and I liked his order way more. Actually tasted good. The garlic fries are thin fries, kind of like McDonald's. They have indoor seating, outdoor seating in the back which is shared with the restaurant next door and more outdoor seating in the front. We went here on a whim, I'm glad I got to try it but don't have any plans to come back. But if vegan food is your jam, definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
Great option for vegans and vegetarians, and even meat lovers! The sandwiches were divine and really filling. We had to take home leftovers. It's a hearty sandwich with great fake meat. It doesn't taste like you're eating a lot of preservatives. The garlic friends on the side were divine. The service is friendly with helpful and upbeat staff. The ambiance is very laid back with outdoor seating and beautiful weather. Perfect place post hike or pickleball!

Yelp
This place has some of the tastiest food in the Bay Area! A bunch of very unique and beautifully assembled vegan deli sandwiches along with a small grocer with tasty vegan meats, cheeses and frozen meals. Whenever I'm in Berkeley and hungry I stop by here. Peter F. is a patient, kind and professional cashier. I have always had friendly service here. The place is a good spot to hang out since there is a lovely indoor-outdoor dining area. I highly reccommend stopping here for a sandwich
google avatar

Tuss R.

Yelp
Came here in the afternoon to sit in outdoor patio which was niceish. Not the most pleasant chairs to sit in for a long time, not the best shade in some spots. Got the bagelwich and it was okay, nothing really to rave about though. Nor any desire to come back here again even though it's only a mile from my place. Service was fine.

Yelp
In regards to whoever cooks the bacon, I wonder if they ask themselves "would someone enjoy eating this burnt bacon?". For me personally, once the bacon becomes over cooked, it likens itself to carcinogenic shards certain to cut up your mouth like some good old Cap'n Crunch, but wields more damage due to its elongated yet rigid texture and shape. I didn't even want to bring this to Yelp since I just get a refund on doordash but this problem became a 1 in 3 occurrence to practically every time I order. One time I ordered in person thinking it would be better and that was the worst instance yet. I understand if some people like the burnt flavor, but the restaurant has disabled their notes request feature and there's no option to select how you'd like your bacon cooked. Please implement some kind of quality check and quality assurance.

Yelp
Best vegan food in Berkeley! I've come here several times just to get the buffalo "chicken" sandwich. The portion is pretty big and is so tasty. The sandwich is delicious with plenty of sauce. There is plenty of outdoor seating which is a plus, the patio is super cute. Food usually comes pretty fast. Service has been good, everyone i've encountered is friendly. A little pricy, but worth it for good food.

Yelp
Oh dear. My partner and I ordered for delivery after years of wanting to try this place. We're not vegan but eat vegan and vegetarian regularly. We got the mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, jalapeño business sandwich and the pickles & fried chicken sandwich. The fried chicken was like eating an overfried gym mat, texture wise. SO unpleasant, absurdly chewy and dry,and also fishy tasting somehow. Definitely the worst plant based chicken we've ever had. The "mozzarella" sticks, while generous, had an unexpected mushy texture and almost fishy taste. My partner thought the jalapeño business was "inoffensive" but it had a strange fishy flavor as well. I feel like the fry oil absorbed the fish flavoring used for the something fishy dish, maybe? The two positives were that the marinara was delicious, and the garlic fries smacked. Unfortunately this was an expensive mistake for us as a whole though :/

Sydney J.

Yelp
I came back for the first time in a while and ordered the chicken parm at the counter; the food was ready within 5 minutes or so. The sandwich is huge in size, and can be rather messy to eat so I recommend getting a spoon or fork if you don't like having a mess all over your hands. I really liked the garlic bread, but I felt the plant based chicken itself was not as crispy as I'd like, and overall the sauce or meat tasted over salted. I also hope someday plant based cheese will match the level of richness of dairy cheese, but I don't feel it's there yet. Butcher's Son does share a gorgeous outdoor patio with their neighboring restaurant that has various seating options and roses though, so I recommend enjoying the space while you're there.

Yelp
I stopped by to grab dinner on a Thursday right before closing. I ordered the breaded "chicken" sandwich with fries and a side of macaroni salad. My food was ready pretty quickly after ordering. I appreciate that it wasn't an issue that I came close to closing. The sandwich was a lot bigger than I expected. It was fried perfectly. The fries were spot on. I enjoyed the macaroni salad, but I could have done without the fake bacon. TL;DR - amazing vegan place with comfort classics

Yelp
As a meat lover, I was very skeptical about a fully vegan restaurant, but OMG this place is so AMAZING. One of my friends is vegetarian, so a lot of my usual restaurant recomendations in the Bay were a no-go, and I ultimately found this place and was really intrigued by the name (The Butcher's Son and Vegan)??? Anyways, we got to the restaurant, ordered our food, and it came out in like 10 minutes. I ordered the KILLER B.L.A.T and having never eaten a vegan patty before, the first bite was sublime. It's almost similar to a Vietnamese ham called Chả lụa, but it was just so much better! I forgot, but I think my friend got a "chicken sandwich," and he thought it was great as well! I would definitely come back to this place, and it's a real gem in Berkeley. One minor con is that you have to rely on street parking, but it's downtown Berkeley, what do you expect?

Yelp
Pulled pork sandwich was outrageously tasty. Loved the fries. Cannoli was very good. Friendly staff. Sat outside where it was very pleasant.

Yelp
Lunch at @thebutchersson_official was sooo good! We shared the vegan mozzarella sticks, fried chickn bagel sandwich, and BLAT with macaroni salad and potato salad. All were delicious! (instagram: jax.vegan.eats)

Yelp
This place is a GEM for all vegans/vegetarians out there. They specialize in making traditionally meaty and cheesy sandwiches, all vegan. And they are GOOD. Even my meat loving partner is sold and makes us come here on trips out to Berkeley. I am always pumped to find a meatless place that is so good that it gets meat lovers eating vegetarian/vegan food. My highest recommendation is for the Jalapeño business sandwich, which is a 5/5 and consistently blows me away. I've tried some of the other sandwiches but this has always by far been the best, and I am a creature of habit so end up getting this one regularly. It is creamy and spicy and full of delicious goodness. Oh and make sure to try a pickle. Service is usually fast. (~15 mins for phone orders) but it has taken longer on busy days (up to 20-30 mins). They have a cute parklet out front (and I've heard other seating possibly in back?) but I've typically taken the food to go. This place is absolutely a must try if you're in the Berkeley area.

Yelp
I love how everything is SUPER customizable here! My go to is always to choose a sandwich and turn it into a salad. That's why it's never too heavy and I can tell myself I'm eating veggies. Also for some reason their bacon Mac salad has a hold over and I feel an urge to order it every time. They also have a huuuge menu so there's something for everyone!

Yelp
To whom this may concern: Well me not being a Vegan person, but one in our party recommended, this is the go to place. I have to admit [our family], I was impressed. A very casual type atmosphere, get your own cutlery, self serve.

Yelp
This is a regular spot for brunch with friends. Everything on the menu is vegan and so flavorful! Love love love!

Yelp
The restaurant atmosphere and decorations are beautiful. The backyard seating area was clean and beatifl But the food doesn't taste good, compared to veggie grill or similar vegan burgers, vegan fish sticks/chicken nuggets were really bad, only vegan mac and cheese was ok. Service was okay.

Yelp
They must have Harry Potter or some wizard back there cooking because this must be witchcraft! I had the smoked pastrami reuben. I ordered the sandwich deconstructed because I planned on eating it later on that evening. I didn't want the bread to get soggy. I ended up eating the sandwich the next day. The sandwich was amazing!! Even the day after. It's so hard to believe it isn't actual meat!

Yelp
Yesterday we came by for double blueberry pancakes and we liked that it had a nice chewy consistency and good flavor. Just a bit of their syrup sweetened them up perfectly. We also ordered a side of their tofu scramble for an extra 4 dollars and that was disappointing. It was really bland and I had to add a lot of salt to it. Next time, we will order a side of vegan bacon instead. The courtyard is really cute and the service was excellent. I like that the customers here are always quiet and considerate of other diners. I can always come here for a peaceful breakfast or brunch.

Yelp
I find the staff and the food very excellent. I did miss certain foods they only have occasionally, like chicken salad and chicken pot pie. I love the pancakes, whether they are stuffed or not. I can have several meals in just one

Yelp
So many vegan sandwich options! Vegan baked goods too! There are some seating options just as you come in, and more indoor seating options behind the register, as well as an outdoor patio with some tables as well. The people working there are nice and helpful. If you're a vegan, Butcher's Son is a must. Two of us who aren't vegan love it too! I ordered the Chicken Parmesan sandwich; it's so tasty, and massive (so if you're extra hungry, pair it with their yummy garlic fries or split with a friend).

Yelp
Excellent service with stellar personalities, the food is phenomenal. You have to try the Reuben. Seriously.

Yelp
This spot is pretty amazing! We were staying down the street and just went out walking to look for something for lunch. I saw a few people waiting outside to go in so I figured it must be good. To be honest - I didn't realize this place was all vegan until after I had already ordered! I got the sandwich with steak and jalapenos but I ordered it as a salad. I love that they have that option on all of their sandwiches. The salad was full of delicious toppings including some bacon that really tastes like bacon. It also had both pickled and fresh jalapenos. Everything was very fresh and tasty. They have outdoor patio eating as well as indoor seats. It was a very nice atmosphere - folks we talked to were friendly. Definitely an enjoyable visit and I want to try more things on the extensive menu. We almost went back for dinner because we enjoyed it so much.

Yelp
Nice service. I tried the fish and chips, which were ok - had a hankering so thought I'd give 'em a shot - but I'm guessing I should go back and try some of their other offerings.

Yelp
They say if there's a line out the door it's gotta be good, right? I give this place credit for offering so many veganized sandwiches. The line extends out the door and along University Ave. Good thing there is a long line, so you can have enough time to read the menu. Once at the counter, place your order then find a seat. There's a water station where you can grab a drink prior to finding a seat. As far as the menu, there are A LOT of sandwiches, small number of apps, and a small number of salads offered (although you can get any sandwich made into a salad + $2). Weekends also offer a handful of "Brunch" items. I ordered the Tempeh Kale Salad, an extra side of jackfruit - grilled, and I had to try the climax blue cheese. I hesitated not to get the salad because the tempeh is battered and fried !?!?, but went against my hesitation ONLY because the tempeh is locally made. I requested the dressings on the side. After placing my order I took a gander at the grab and go cooler, and I was very shocked to read some of the ingredients on the labels of the goods, specifically, high-fructose corn syrup. I grabbed a small table facing the kitchen, and just after having a seat my order was delivered. Salad was in a massive bowl. Kale (appeared to be common curly kale) was chopped into small pieces, but had more than my desire of ribs. It's my fault for ordering the dressing on the side because that would have helped wilt the kale a bit before it was delivered to my table and cut some of the roughness. The caesar dressing was not anything that wowed me. Very thin and lacked a caesar taste. The sweet pickled cabbage was abundant, so I never tasted the fried capers, only seen them here and there in a fork full. Same for the "parmesan" cheese, I could see it but the taste was nothing that registered with my palate. Because the tempeh was fried, the battered outside added the element of a crouton, but the tempeh itself was a little soft/mushy. There was plenty of tempeh on the salad, that was a good surprised, too bad it comes along with grease. The jackfruit was good, but I'm also afraid to know what's in it... it wasn't in the cooler, so I didn't see the ingredients... it's probably better I don't know. The blue cheese is true to it's name. As far a flavor, very pungent, reminiscent of actual blue cheese, a little steep at $3.50 though. I will say the restrooms (at least the one I went in) are disgusting. I went to wash up before my meal and felt dirtier coming out than I did going in Overall, yes this established is plant-based, but it's not a healthy plant-based eatery. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again unless I was in the downtown area or give up on caring about the quality of food I put in my body. IMO, nothing worth standing in line. Hopefully my opinion helps all those who love this place, you are one person closer to the ordering counter.

Yelp
I came here for the first time in a long while and loved it just as much as I did a few years ago! I have a few vegetarian/vegan friends and this is always my go to spot to hang out since it has such a wide variety of vegetarian options. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich for the first time and thought it was super tasty! Though the inner texture wasn't exactly "chicken," the breading made it very meat-passing and the flavor was all there. I've also tried some of their other sandwiches like the chicken parm (delicious) and hot pesto chicken. Portions are always hefty and great value, and staff are always so friendly! Would highly recommend this spot to vegetarians, vegans, and meat lovers alike!

Yelp
You can never go wrong with this place - The food is delicious Service is good as the staff are kind Ambiance is loud as it is in the main drive and focus is about the veganess of the food ... it is next to university so parking is a pain ...

Yelp
We came here knowing that it was a vegan restaurant, but meat replacement for the chicken was subpar. My friend could not finish his sandwich. My own sandwich was exactly what I was expecting. The ricotta was actually quite nice and there were some pieces of something that had the taste and texture of ham. Quite interesting. The back patio was very cute with ample seating for when we went. I would choose to go there again on a nice day. They also have a section for self serve items like napkins and sauces. However, I'd be sure to order something that you know you'll like, especially if you aren't vegan. The meat substitutes taste like they're trying a bit too hard.

Yelp
I always see this place on Yelp, so I was so glad when I finally tried it! The line seems long, but it can go pretty fast. The sandwiches are done quickly, but the hemp pancakes have a longer wait. I ordered the lemon chicken sandwich - it didn't taste too much like chicken, but I still really liked it. The chicken was like a vegetable pancake, and the lemon sandwich sauce tasted so good! It was really perfectly savory and honesty really filling even though it wasn't real meat. The banana hemp pancakes were soft and tasted like normal pancakes, but it did have a little off aftertaste to it (might be the flour or hemp). I personally wouldn't order the pancake again because I think the sandwiches are more special and unique to the restaurant. Overall, if you're looking to try vegan food, I'd recommend going here!

Yelp
One of my first time trying vegan food . The food was pretty pricey (but obviously). The vibes were immaculate with many outdoor seatings and a very clean environment. The service was very fast and friendly, the staff helped us take a group photo. I ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with Cheddar Cheese as well as a Strawberry Cheesecake. Total adding up to about $22. Taste-wise the burger was pretty good with a very similar taste to real burgers. The Strawberry Cheesecake tasted more like soy milk with a very light strawberry taste. Overall pretty good!

Yelp
The Butcher's Son is a FABULOUS restaurant for vegans or anyone who likes good food. Creative menu, lots of familiar options for comfort food (potato salad, coleslaw, garlic fries and favorites like Reuben, and BLT's). Forget vegan if that term is bothersome or confusing. and just enjoy the experience knowing the food has been simplified and hormone free. The food is wonderful, service is prompt, and outdoor season is lovely. I won't take a start off for this but what was challenging on a recent visit was the attitude and dour demeanor of the young woman who took our order on Friday night, January 3rd. Plus, she did a small eye-roll when I asked about cutting the (three) sandwiches in our order) something done on a previous occasion with no eye-roll. The guys were all great, the vibe in the place is generally easy, there are lots of take-out "meats" and other foods. But the counter person dampened my experience. She's clearly not doing right-livelihood or even faking it. Too bad. The business deserves better. We'll still go back and just hope someone else is working. PS Just read that a pickle is "free upon request." Really? This server who I'm now slipping into calling awful didn't tell me that even though I asked if any sides were included. Oh please move this person off the counter ... maybe to dish-washing in the back? Unless she finds more suitable employment elsewhere.

Yelp
I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS PLACE'S SANDWICHES. They make their own faux meats and you can purchase some in the fridge as well. Everything is good. Service was friendly and everything is vegan. Don't let that fool you though! The textures and flavor are definitely there. Parking can be hard to find in this busy area of Berkeley but it's worth it! There is dine in as well but we got our sandwiches togo. The reuben was amazing and we got a side of white fish from the fridge which was stellar.
