They say if there's a line out the door it's gotta be good, right?
I give this place credit for offering so many veganized sandwiches. The line extends out the door and along University Ave. Good thing there is a long line, so you can have enough time to read the menu. Once at the counter, place your order then find a seat. There's a water station where you can grab a drink prior to finding a seat.
As far as the menu, there are A LOT of sandwiches, small number of apps, and a small number of salads offered (although you can get any sandwich made into a salad + $2). Weekends also offer a handful of "Brunch" items.
I ordered the Tempeh Kale Salad, an extra side of jackfruit - grilled, and I had to try the climax blue cheese. I hesitated not to get the salad because the tempeh is battered and fried !?!?, but went against my hesitation ONLY because the tempeh is locally made. I requested the dressings on the side. After placing my order I took a gander at the grab and go cooler, and I was very shocked to read some of the ingredients on the labels of the goods, specifically, high-fructose corn syrup.
I grabbed a small table facing the kitchen, and just after having a seat my order was delivered. Salad was in a massive bowl. Kale (appeared to be common curly kale) was chopped into small pieces, but had more than my desire of ribs. It's my fault for ordering the dressing on the side because that would have helped wilt the kale a bit before it was delivered to my table and cut some of the roughness. The caesar dressing was not anything that wowed me. Very thin and lacked a caesar taste. The sweet pickled cabbage was abundant, so I never tasted the fried capers, only seen them here and there in a fork full. Same for the "parmesan" cheese, I could see it but the taste was nothing that registered with my palate. Because the tempeh was fried, the battered outside added the element of a crouton, but the tempeh itself was a little soft/mushy. There was plenty of tempeh on the salad, that was a good surprised, too bad it comes along with grease.
The jackfruit was good, but I'm also afraid to know what's in it... it wasn't in the cooler, so I didn't see the ingredients... it's probably better I don't know.
The blue cheese is true to it's name. As far a flavor, very pungent, reminiscent of actual blue cheese, a little steep at $3.50 though.
I will say the restrooms (at least the one I went in) are disgusting. I went to wash up before my meal and felt dirtier coming out than I did going in
Overall, yes this established is plant-based, but it's not a healthy plant-based eatery. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again unless I was in the downtown area or give up on caring about the quality of food I put in my body. IMO, nothing worth standing in line. Hopefully my opinion helps all those who love this place, you are one person closer to the ordering counter.
