On the Grid : The Caledonian

"The number of malts and blends they carry: 250+. (If you’re a Scotch Whisky fan, you can stop reading here and go meet your fellow enthusiasts.) The Caledonian offers a true Scottish eating and drinking experience, with a ton of exclusive beers (the entire Innis & Gunn family) and the most authentic haggis this side of the Atlantic. An order of this savoury pudding containing sheep’s heart/liver/lungs is met with a “Good for you!” by the bubbly staff who know how daunting eating this dish can be. (Note: it’s a lot tastier than you’d think.) Warmly lit with a beautiful wood bar and focused menu all made with local and organic produce, The Caledonian feels like an upscale but also traditional public house you’d find in Scotland. Must eats: Scotch Eggs, House Sausage Rolls, Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, House-made Scottish Steak Pie." - Sid Lee

Follow @bredgyeats for more food reviews and posts! There's a first time for everything, and today is a fine day to try both haggis in a taste of Scotland platter, or saffron in a luxurious saffron seafood risotto. Thankfully I didn't have to choose between the sausage roll, scotch egg or haggis, which was undoubtedly my favourite of the trio. Deep-fried to a satisfying crispy texture, the interior is tender and bursting with umami along with a delicious gaminess of lamb, which is what makes this animal one of my favourites to eat. I was only disappointed by only having one bite to ration. The sticky toffee pudding is an indulgent treat after eating all that fried stuff, a huge dose of sweetness from the butterscotch and moist, caramelized toffee pudding with chunks of dates inside, contrasted by the cold vanilla ice cream and slight bitterness of the cocoa powder.

The Caledonian never disappoints. Food is always delicious, service friendly, and atmosphere cozy and fun. One of the best patios in the city. I've been here easily ten times and will definitely come back again.

Great Scottish Scotch Pub A great place to have dinner and scotch. So many to choose from. Can even keep your own bottle there! The staff are exceptional. Love the haggis!

Went for the whiskey tasting event. Host was knowledgeable and friendly. I hit the dish waitress was serving by accident and my fish and chips went flying. They replaced it and cleaned it no problem. Had a fun time with my friends. My friends devoured the mars bar and sticky toffee pudding so I'm sure they are great!

Used to occasionally go to the local pub. I hadn’t been in quite sometime and was quite taken back by the atrocious service and egregious behaviour of the service. The food quality was also quite unacceptable. Seems as though if you are not a regular your meals show us behind many people who have just arrived. We were told that it was because the kitchen was busy. The place was less than 20% occupied and the people next to us arrived a 1/2 hour after we did and ordered the same meal. We didn’t complain just asked when we might get our food. So, we sat for an hour to be served very cold food. No point in complaining. We didn’t eat, just left without paying a tip and a big promise to myself that I would write this review and never return. Some businesses don’t deserve to get your hard earned money, and this place is the top of this list.

Google
An excellent place in general. Bit pricey, but scotch is expensive, and so is rent in that area. Great venue, great service, mostly-great food. And the servers know their scotch, and can easily recommend one to someone's tastes. One of our group doesn't like peat, and they showed him one he did like. Recommend: anything with haggis (trust me, it tastes immeasurably better than it sounds), scotch eggs, curry chips, deep fried Mars bar. Don't recommend: steak pie. It was apparently underwhelming and apparently a little gamey. One of our group was expressing some disappointment at that, which is odd because possibly the best steak pie I ever had was in Glasgow, but this one was a bit short on seasoning (allegedly). It might be a matter of taste though. Still, not enough to drop it down to four stars by any means. Haggis burger with stilton. Might be a bit overwhelming for some, but damned if I didn't love it. And scotch. Gotta have scotch. Great place for father's day, certainly.

You must come here if you like Scottish whisky. Excellent whisky options. I also thoroughly enjoyed my haggis burger. I'll definitely be coming back.

Fantastic night at the Caledonian. Their servers know their scotch and the food was delicious. They also have a well lit back patio. Washrooms are downstairs.

Yelp
From the moment you step foot inside The Caledonian, you will be drawn to its cozy interior. While dinner was amazing, the real highlight of the evening was their deep fried mars bar We had intended on only ordering one to share - but just had to order a second.

Yelp
From the customer service to the food to the scotch selection, it was all fabulous. The haggis fritters were perfectly cooked and accompanied by hot parsnip chips and gravy. I wanted to lick the plate. Fish and chips were piping hot and excellent. The portions were large, we could have split an order and still both have been satisfied. The Scotch selection is the best we've come across, including some that, as the Ardveg Embassy, only they have. All in all a great experience.

Yelp
Gord and I had supper last evening at the Caledonian. He had a Scotch Egg (wrapped in pork, rosemary, thyme and fennel with grainy mustard) and Aberdeenshire Finnan Haddie Cakes (panko fried North Sea haddock with potato, red onion, caper and dill with tartar sauce). I had Classic Butter Chicken (basmati, mango chutney and poppadum). All were good! Donna, the owner, took very good care of us.

Yelp
My friend invited me for a whisky tasting hosted by Tomintoul at this beautiful, cozy, and yet large pub on College St. Right when you walk in you get the feeling you're in the UK. Packed shoulder to shoulder, yet very welcoming. The front end seems small but they have seats in the back as well. The staff and clientele are very polite and friendly. Rosie, our bartender and server (we sat at the bar) was attentive and fun to talk to. I was recommended the haggis dinner. I've never had haggis before but had a preconception that it was pretty awful but this haggis changed my mind. Scotland's national dish of lamb, oats and spices on a bed of mashed turnip and potatoes. It was well seasoned and tasted delicious! The texture was of ground meat. Nothing binding it together, I don't think. Knife not required. The crisps on the top were welcomed to contrast the texture of the smooth mash. They do have vegetarian options here too. The tasting itself was wonderful. A representative from Tomintoul presented to us their 4 whiskies: 10, 12, 16 and peated. He went through a brief history and process of making the whiskey in which we ended each segment with a nosing and tasting of each whiskey starting with the 10 year. His pacing was perfect and kept us interested. This was a perfect evening for me. Great food, great drink and great people. Would go back. In fact, I'll be there again next Tuesday. =)

Yelp
Extra bright star for the massive list of whisky that is available to choose from. You can find some strange ones that are not available on the market and try out some new ones that have always caught your eye. If you can't decide, there are whisky flights to choose from and they provide an easy introduction to the different flavours. I came with friends on a weekend and sat in the open patio space in the back. The tables were spaced far apart, so it was comfortable and everyone could have their own private conversations. I had the steak pie with fries and shared the sticky toffee pudding over a glass of whiskey afterwards. Food was great, the steak pie was tender and stuck to the ribs. The sticky toffee pudding was amazing and a perfect match to the whiskey. Staff are friendly and always makes sure you have everything (another pint?) that you may need. A great place and will be back!

Yelp
Its got a proper pub feel and a nice back patio, creates the feeling of being in Scotland without getting on a plane. Went here to try the haggis and tastes just the way I remember from my last trip across the Atlantic. They've got Scottish beers like Tenants and Innis & Gunn plus an extensive whisky list. Main course portions were large. Tried a scotch egg for the first time and wasn't a big fan, but worth a try through the tasting platter. Would visit again.

Yelp
My friend and I were down the street at an event and wanted to try something new in the vicinity. The Caledonian looked very promising with highly rated reviews and mouthwatering photos of their food. The waitress greeted us when we walked in and I thought maybe the reviews may have been wrong because there was hardly customers in the restaurant. Turns out there's another section at the back that opens up to a lovely patio. The customers out back seemed to be enjoying themselves and I retracted my first impression. Our waitress was very attentive and made sure to check on us every once in a while to make sure we were okay. Even another waitress would ask how we were. Such friendly staff is a bonus. I've only had a Scotch egg one other time at a carnival so I wasn't sure what to expect. The Scotch egg was delicious! It wasn't too salty and paired nicely with the salad. I'm not much of a salad eater. My fish and chips was decent. I have fond memories of fish and chips in the UK and this wasn't quite the same. The steak in my friend's steak pie was so flavourful and tender. A lot of the time I've had dry and not tasty meat in pies such as this. When it came time to pay I reached inside my backpack for my wallet and found that the lid on my container of cherries had popped off. There were mushed cherries at the bottom of my backpack, it was quite gross. The waitress saw the displeasure on my face and when I asked for a couple of napkins she offered to wet a couple for me. What service! She even got me a ziplock bag so that my cherries would not create more of a mess for me. The service was impeccable and sitting at the back enjoying the atmosphere was lovely. I'm sure I'll be back to try something else on the menu.

Yelp
What a great Scottish bar with an excellent selection of whiskeys and a great outdoor patio. If you are a whiskey connoisseur, you come here. Even I, someone who doesn't love whiskey, found some lighter ones which I enjoyed. The food was good as well - typical Scottish pub fare. The only sour point was that our waitress had a bit of an attitude problem. When we asked for more cutlery for instance, she was not obliging, and made a fuss. Despite her moodiness, we did not let that sour our evening. It is a great place to hang out and drink some whiskey amongst friends.

Yelp
The back patio was a pleasant surprise The food was delicious - lots of options that seemed appealing and glad with my choice. My wife had the special a she was very happy. The service was attentive Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Great Scottish Pub with an incredible selection of Scotch. Menu is not extensive but all delicious! Staff is so friendly and efficient! Front and back outdoor patio options or inside at the bar or table. Rustic but clean and fun. Can't go wrong here. Donna is a firecracker!

Yelp
came here for ardbeg's super secret members only whiskey tasting (for the new 19 year whiskey, being released in 2020) and i was absolutely taken back by the service of the staff at the caledonian, and the staff members from ardbeg. this location for dining inside is very small and cramped, as for this tasting it was a full house. the drink menu is really extensive and i can understand why this is an ardbeg embassy, you were able to buy a bottle of whiskey, for this bar to keep on hand, for you to come and visit in the future, something i thought was a really cool option. the service was quick and fast, i really wish i remembered the name of the lady who served us food and drink but she was top notch, i didnt manage to have any food, but my friend had fish and chips and he said it was really amazing. transit options are the 63 ossington bus, and the 506 college street car, lots of parking available in this neighborhood, on the street, sidestreets and lots in the area. (please do not drink and drive though) great staff, great food, awesome experience that im glad i attended this and finally got to experience this amazing whiskey bar, cant wait to come back and experience some food as well! :)

Yelp
I google-searched for a restaurant in town which serves Sunday roasts and The Caledonian was one of the few recommended.. I was there 4 years ago and thought well of the food. So, two Sunday evenings ago ,my boyfriend and I decided to go there for dinner but when we arrived at 745 pm, we were told they served the last roast beef dish at 730 pm... What a let down... .but that just went to prove how popular the dish is.. We decided to dine at the restaurant anyways and were seated by a pleasant host in the back, cozy patio. I asked for the Scotch egg appetizer right away since I remembered it being delicious.. It was tastier than before and the little salad that came on the same plate had a very nice, slightly sweet dressing on it.. As for my entree, I couldn't decide if I should go for the butter chicken because it is usually too sweet and creamy in the Indian restaurants I have had it at. Anyway, I thought I would try it and ...it has my vote for the best butter chicken in town!! Chicken thighs were used, perhaps, but at least it was not breast meat which is served in most Indian restaurants. And it was the right spicyness .. Thumbs up to the chef, James, who did such a wonderful job !My boyfriend had the steak pie which he enjoyed too. Our server was friendly and attentive and made our overall experience at the restaurant ,great! We will definitely be back for their Sunday roast ..and soon!

Yelp
As a Scottish person living in the US this place felt like some home cooking. Got the haggis neeps and tatties, it was perfect. Haggis fritters were delicious and the steak pie was great too. Irn Bru is always going to top it off as well. Nice location with their courtyard too.

Yelp
Food Making this clear from the beginning, I've never had Scottish eggs so I'm no self-proclaimed expert. Similar to my recent posts, I will speak to the origin of this dish and a little bit about its preparation. In the UK, Scottish eggs are mainly labelled as picnic food. In essence, there is (pork) meat surrounding a hard-boiled egg and some people like their egg to be runny in the middle. At the Caledonian, the eggs are paired with a small salad. The outer layer is super crunchy and I didn't find it too salty, however, I can see why some people wouldn't like it. The Scottish steak pie was top-notch, the meat inside was super tender and stuffed with flavour. I don't think everyone will like it, especially those who prefer something more subtle. There's a lot of meat inside the bowl, so they aren't going cheap on the customers. Although the waitress suggested mash potatoes, I found it very dry, somewhat salty, and not smooth enough for my taste buds. I stole a few fries from my friend's Fish and Chips. It was super soft (and oily lol), but tasted okay to me. My friend liked the fish, but didn't think it was spectacular. She did finish everything from my plate minus the mash potatoes lols. Food-wise, I think they are good. Service I usually talk about service first, but you need to read this. To begin, I wasn't impressed that they didn't have air conditioning on at this time of the month. I mean, look at Toronto, the people are literally begging for cold weather to come back in July lols. Anyhow, I love how the place looks - please ask to sit in the back because it's lovely. I like how we were sitting on wooden-stools (or kind of) and was able to overlook the back patio where they had romantic light bulbs strung near the top. It was honestly a beautiful sight minus the humid hardly comfortable weather. The wait staff were very attentive and kept checking on us. My friend spilled a box of cherries in her backpack so they offered napkins AND A ZIP-LOCK BAG to resolve the situation. We already paid at this point, so big big thumbs up. I rarely give 5 stars, but their service is worth a comment on Yelp. I probably wouldn't order the steak pot pie again in the summer, but hell yes I'll be back to eat that in winter.
google avatar

Giancarlo S.

Yelp
The service was great as was the whiskey selection and the atmosphere. I found most of the food to be very good (try the Scotch eggs) but I did feel let down by the Haggis and the steak pie. Note that they did offer to bring me something else as soon as I let them know. Will definitely go back!

Yelp
This rating is mostly for the food. Came here for dinner with friends on a weekday evening. I was surprised at how classy this scottish pub was on the inside. Very romantic setting. However, I thought the lighting was too dim (I could barely read the menu). I ordered the Taste of Scotland (sausage rolls, deep fried haggis, and scotch egg, with gracy and aioli dips). I didn't enjoy this dish very much. The sausage in the scottish egg had a funky taste, as did the aioli dip. The sausage rolls weren't anything special. I actually prefer the frozen sausage rolls that you can buy at the supermarket and bake yourself. I asked my friends how they enjoyed their dishes as well. One friend really enjoyed the butter chicken while the other thought it was just ok. The meat pie may have been a bit bland cause my friend had to add ketchup. As for fish and chips, my friend said the batter was too thick compared to the amount of fish. Lastly, my friend's beer tasted watered down. Definitely won't be back for the food. Maybe this place is better for drinks?

Yelp
This is a mid-size place in the heart of little Italy in TO. It was also victim to the entire street being under construction, so the side walk was torn up in front of it. Went in with a good friend for a cool one & some food. I ordered the Fish & Chips. Nothing special about the food. Just regular pub-grub. Portion size was just middle of the road too. The owner was very pleasant & the wait staff were attentive. Nothing bad to say about the whole thing!

Goldwin S.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and it's always been amazing. I usually don't get the special but here... it's actually special. They have some sort of Michelin star chef that makes the specials unique and are thoughtfully designed for maximum deliciousness! Service and ambiance are top notch! Not a cheap place but you certainly get that you pay for. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Whiskey!! A whole Wall of Whiskey at The Caledonian!! I should have order one of those instead of a beer... definitely next time. There are quite a few Scottish draft beer in the menu. The Tennent's Lager I ordered which is the best selling pale lager in Scotland was well balanced: crisp with a hint of malt. The crowd here tonight was quite mix: with families and even a table of seniors with their party hats on at the back room. Haggis Fritters any one? Thanks for Vivek for sharing his deep fried haggis with a smokey whiskey sauce. I guess deep fried makes everything tastes better?! It was not gamy at all but has this funny texture of sticking to my mouth. Service here is top notch! Our server is courteous and efficient and always check in on us. The Caledonian is surprisingly busy even on a weeknight?! I wondering how it would be on a Friday or Saturday night!
google avatar

Demitri H.

Yelp
Come for the scotch eggs, stay for the whiskey flight! The Caledonian is probably one of the top bars in Toronto. Seating can get difficult during peak times, but if you manage to nab a spot, expect great food with a stellar selection of whiskey. The scotch eggs are the star of the show. I could eat these without stopping for so much as a breath, but if you must try other foods, the fish and chips and pie were both hits. The haggis fritters where interesting. I don't regret trying them, but I'm not sure whether I'd ever order them again. Especially in the face of such scotch egg greatness. Cheers!

Yelp
Great Scottish bar! Large variety of scotch and Scottish beers to choose from, accompanied by true Scottish pub fare. From Haggis to steak pie to butter chicken, the food is quite good and not super expensive. It is dimly lit inside and the staff are warm and welcoming. Definitely gets busy, especially on weekends but it is a must for those looking for a taste of Scotland. Oh and definitely get the sticky toffee pudding.

Yelp
With the lack of choices for a legit Scottish bar in Toronto.. I want to say the Caledonian is not a bad place to hang out if Scotch is your thing. They have a seriously big selection of scotch and the menu that they've put together is very informative. We have been to the Caledonian a few times in the past, my husband and I enjoyed the vibe and service is excellent every time we were here. The food was very average I have to be honest with you. If you are down to try some haggis then this might be a good start,.. however... after visiting Scotland I must say Caledonian's haggis is nothing close to the traditional haggis you can taste in Scotland. We used to enjoy their scotch eggs and they are still not too bad... but I recently found out that Scotch eggs are not originated from Scotland??? THAT WAS A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT because we tried to look for Scotch eggs in Scotland but they were no where to be found! Thanks GOOGLE. The steak pie is extremely salty and sad looking.. I wouldn't recommend unless haggis/fish and chips are not your thing... Overall, I would recommend Caledonian if you have never been to Scotland... you'd love the variety of Scotch they serve here. The ambiance is great! It is very much like any traditional European pub if you enjoy that kind of vibe :)

Yelp
Found myself in the neighbourhood and decided to visit this gem. I've been here before, and this visit was the same - great food, drink and service. Partook in buck-a-shuck oysters (some lovely Saint Simons from New Brunswick) which came with a spray bottle of whiskey if you wanted to mist your oysters before chucking them down your throat (I prefer the lemon). I always order the same thing when I come here - the haggis. Comes with turnips and potatoes (I said no to potatoes and they happily obliged). Every bite is happy haggi-ness. Note to self: try the Scotch eggs next time since people keep raving about it.

Yelp
I really like the atmosphere here, especially the back patio. Been here twice and this place is good for drinks and fish and chips. Ive sampled a few things here like the Fries and curry, sample platter, haggis, fried pickles etc. And I find the food here too salty. Having said that, if you like to snack on salty foods with good beers then you're in luck. Service here is good, but honestly would only come here for drinks if someone wants to come here.

Yelp
I will preface this by saying I am not a whiskey person. At all. Ever. But the whiskey based cocktails they have cooking at The Calendonian were good enough to turn me. A friend of mine was raving about this place so I decided to check it out with him. It's a nice Scottish pub in the College and Ossington area and is well loved by many of it's regulars. The one thing that stood out to me was the community they've created here. It seemed like the owner and staff knew almost every person who walked through the door by name. I love that! I even made a few new friends myself. For the whiskey lovers, they've got pages and pages of whiskeys to choose from. Can't decide? Get a whiskey flight! For the alcohol lovers who can't stand whiskey straight up, aka me, there's a really great selection of cocktails to pick from. Try the martini! Food-wise they have a one-page menu. Short and sweet, with your Scottish mainstays like Haggis, Steak pie, Fish and chips, basically food that makes my heart sigh with contentment. I ordered the Steak pie with mash on the side and was not let down. The puff pastry was golden as advertised and the chunks of steak melted in my mouth. The place filled up considerably as the night went on but I am thankful to say the service never suffered. However, I would suggest making a reservation if you're thinking of dining here Friday night - I assume the same can be said of Saturday dinners. I'm excited to return and try the Haggis next, and work my way through their cocktail list! I would recommend this place for groups, they have the space for it.

Yelp
First timer! went there last night with my honey, before a play. I can't say enough about the service : they seated us right away, and the server was friendly and attentive with us all evening, despite it being SUPER busy. Somehow they managed to seat everyone that kept pouring in, even though the place already seemed packed. The scotch selection was awesome and reasonably priced, which pleased my guy greatly. I really enjoyed the award-winning Caesar. They have an interesting mixed drinks list as well. The food menu is short and simple, but what we ordered was awesome. As other reviewers mentioned: they make an amazing scotch egg! I mean, I guess it's hard to make a bad one, but I really enjoyed it. The HAGGIS. I can't say enough good things about this, it was really filling and I was quite sad I couldn't finish it because each bite tasted like the most comfiest of comfort foods. It's my new favorite dish! My partner ordered the fish and chips: the fish was pretty oily but very tasty and still crunchy, a huge portion that we could have split probably. The fries are perfect juliennes and the tartar sauce was tasty. Overall, we came for the drinks but will come back for the food, atmosphere and service.

Yelp
Came here for a quick snack and a drink. My fiancé and I ordered a Scotch egg, which was a first for both of us. It was quite good but didn't blow our minds the way we thought a boiled egg wrapped in meat, breaded and fried might. Our drink was a Monkey Shoulder which was merely okay. I like citrusy drinks, but the lime overwhelmed the other elements. I would give this place 3.5 stars based on food/drink, but I'm bumping to 4 stars based on the beautiful outdoor seating area in the back.

Yelp
Love this pub. Everything about it is great, but what makes it special is it's service. Staff are extremely knowledgeable on the menu and what to try based on your preferences. From Smokey flights to your average scotch, this place has it all. Food is also delicious. A simple but effective menu, this place is doing everything right.

Natasha P.

Yelp
Donna, Meg and the rest of the staff are amazing! The food will transport you back to Scotland! I highly recommend the sticky toffee pudding. They have the best whisky collections in the city, along with a caring and knowledgeable staff. I also love the fact that they have Tennants on tap! Highly recommend this place!!

Yelp
Best Guinness in town is another accolade amongst a very long list. Their patio out back is also right up there with the best, street dining for those who can't get a patio seat in summer.

Yelp
The Caledonian isn't your average pub. It's more of an upscale whiskey bar, with some fantastic dishes to boot. The real draw here though, is the staff. Every time I've come here I have been treated like family. Unbelievably warm and inviting. It's as if they've known you for years, even when you're walking through the door for the first time. I haven't received service like this anywhere else, and that's saying something! I'm not brave enough to try the Haggis, but I've had the Fish & Chips on a few occasions and it's as good as it gets. Up there with that of Fresco's (love them!), albeit a little more expensive. It's a giant piece of haddock with a home-made tartar sauce and the frites are also delicious. Compliment this dish with an Innis & Gunn (whiskey infused beer) and you've got yourself a winning combination. Seriously delicious... if only it wasn't a high-calorie dish, I'd eat this every day! Kudos to this fine establishment!

Yelp
This place is a whiskey lovers wet dream. The wall behind the bar is drowned in whiskey from floor to ceiling. It was the first stop on our Yelp Dufferin Grove bar crawl so I took it easy and went with a basic rye and diet. I liked the vibe of this place. Nice and relaxed, great atmosphere. It was a little odd that there was a rather large group of people standing in the middle of the bar, not sitting at the bar, and blocking the entire path for the serving staff. I would expect this to happen if the bar was busy but there were more than enough tables open for this group to grab a seat and get out of everyone's way. February Food-Free Yelping Challenge 9/29

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. Friendliest staff and nicest manger/owner (the woman with the red hair! so lovely!), always delicious food and a warm atmosphere. I've probably been here at least 6-7 times now and it's consistently excellent. If you are interested in whiskey this is the place to go. There are many other options for non-whiskey drinkers so don't worry about feeling left out if it's not your thing. Fancy a Guinness? The food is awesome. It's a small menu but by now I've tried almost everything on it. The starters such as the scotch egg, haggis fritters and sausage roll "Taste of Scotland" platter are a must! All the mains are great and while at first the idea of haggis freaked me out, it is really tasty and definitely worth trying here! I've been to a couple complimentary whiskey tastings here (be sure to follow them on Facebook to find out about events like this!) and they were really fun and educational if you want to explore whiskey. The Caledonian is really interested in engaging the community - whiskey lovers and those who will soon enough turn into whiskey lovers - and I'm all for that.

Yelp
Great for a special event! We organised a stag night which included a pit-stop at the Caley and they rolled out the red carpet for us. The objective of our visit was to enjoy a whisky flight. The Caley, recognising the groom's preference for Speyside whisky, prepared a special selection which they "named" after the groom. They provided tasting notes and gave a talk about each whisky we sampled. This was very well received by all, especially our guest of honour. We would have left afterwards, but they were smoking pulled pork and it was irresistible. We eventually departed... at closing time ;)

Yelp
This place is amazing if you love scotch and want to consume it alongside some tasty Scottish noshes! I heard about this place on Yelp when they hosted the Robbie Burns Supper. I wanted to go but they sold out, which--along with the solid 4-5 star reviews--led me to believe this place was awesome. I made it here eventually anyway on a nice, cool night and sat on the patio. A couple of friends and I split the Taste of Scotland plate which included haggis, scotch egg and sausage roll. If I can say I have a favourite type of pub food it's definitely Scottish pub food! For my main I got the beer battered fish and chips. I felt that maybe there weren't enough of the chips part, but maybe that's because they were so good. I asked for curry sauce on the side and though it deviated from the whole Scottish thing, was still a great complement to the fries. My friends got burgers which they seemed to enjoy. The BEST parts of the whole experience were the scotches as well as the lovely service. The lovely Scottish lady was very friendly and helped me pick out some drams. The waitress was also great too. They seemed to be very attentive even though the place was busy on a Friday night. I tried two scotches. The first one I ordered was a Speyside single malt, the Glenrothes 1985 Vintage. I wanted to order a scotch that I could say was older than me! It was delicious!!! So smooth and sweet. I asked for ice on the side but I ended up drinking it neat, and was extremely sad when it was all gone. Not sad enough to order another one. At $16.50 per shot you can't get carried away! Scotch #2 was an Islay single malt, the Ardbeg 10-year. This one was also very delicious! Very smokey and peaty, but it also had more complex flavours to offer than just smoke and peat. I have the Lagavulin 16-year at home and wanted to try something different, and the lovely Scottish lady suggested I try the Ardbeg 10-year. It was cheap in comparison to many of the others listed. I was shocked I liked it so much. I love the smokiness and peatiness of Islay malts and they have since been deemed my favourites, although I also love the sweet, complex and spicy flavours of Speyside and Highland scotches like the Glenrothes 1985 Vintage, Oban 14-year and Cragganmore 12-year. All of my scotch experiences have made me want to visit Scotland so bad! It'll be my next big trip! All the hipsters can keep sippin' their bourbon; it means more scotch left more me!

Yelp
Amazing. First time here and this is as authentic as it gets. Will definitely be back again and again and again Edit: have been several times now and continue to be exceptionally pleased with each visit. The food is fantastic, the beer and Irn Bru cold, and the service is unparalleled. Looking forward to my next visits.

Yelp
The Caledonian is the only popular Scottish pub/restaurant that I know in Toronto and it's for a good reason. Highlights: - One of the best fish and chips dishes that I've had. Both the fish AND the chips were fantastic. The chips were almost as good at McD's!! - Haggis, haggis, haggis! I've got to admit that I was hesitant at first to try this dish. But I'm a huge fan of anything lamb and let me tell you this, if you like lamb, you're going to like this dish. My only complaint is that it seemed a little bit dry but since this was my first time trying this dish, I have no point of reference. Also, I would serve this dish on mashed sweet potatoes instead of turnip, simply because I HATE turnip. - Quick service. We got our food within 10 min of ordering! (mind you after that the service got super slow) - Great, dimly lit, romantic ambiance. Perfect for a date. - Excellent selection of Scottish beer and scotch. - Reasonable prices. - Outdoor seating area.

Yelp
I went to this restaurant because my Scottish friend want to try out 'haggis' in Toronto. We made a trip to come here for brunch on Sunday. We have a party of 5, we ordered, Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, Scotch Egg, Scotch Fry, The Caledonian Burger, Fish& Chip as meals to share. We also ordered Deep-Fried Mars Bar and Bread and Butter Pudding as dessert. First of all, my Scottish friend was not very fond of the haggis. He said no one would ever serve haggis with gravy on top. The neeps (turnips) are usually color yellow in UK, but here is white?!? Also $14 for this dish is a bit over the top. 2nd, the scotch fry, which comes with blood pudding. The blood pudding was REALLY dry. The rest is tasty and A-OK. The Scotch Egg, it was tasty. However, $8 for just ONE egg, then again, it's abit over the top. The fish & chips are excellent. The burger's beef patties is very dry. We ordered deep fried mars bar and bread and butter pudding as dessert. Deep fried mars bar is interesting, extremely sweet. (Do not try to eat this dish by yourself, you need two ppl, because it's too sweet!). Also, $7 for ONE deep fried mars bar? That is also on the expensive side. Bread and butter pudding is very dense. It is too dense for my Scottish friend. He never thought the pudding would be 'that thick and dense'. Overall, we have 5 people, and the bill comes to be around $27 dollars. Very expensive for brunch for sure. Other than the prices, I think the food is well presented, the waitress is very nice and they answer and listen to our question and request patiently. But would I come here again? If they make the price $3 dollar cheaper, sure.

Yelp
Best Scottish pub in Toronto. Dave and Donna are amazing. Great spot for tastings and their whisky selection is fantastic. If you're in the area it doesn't disappoint. 5/5 *

Yelp
This is one of the few places that we found to hold a party for about 20 people without having to pay extra or book a separate room! They do have a back room for whiskey tasting events that you can do if you wanted to. The space isn't huge, but you can fit a lot of people in here. The drinks are lovely, the bartender even made some shots for us that were on the sweeter side..which of course must have been a bit difficult since they don't carry a wide variety of other types of alcohol. A few people decided to try some of the food (I did not so I can only say they said it was good - I think haggis was tried and the steak pie). The Scotch menu is extensive! If you are not sure then just ask! You can learn a lot from the servers, who by the way were so nice to our large group! Always with a smile and we never had to wait long to get food/drinks. Parking is a pain in the a$$ around here, that's my only negative comment - you may have to end up getting ripped off by parking at the Metro about a 7 min walk away ($20!!).

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday evening. Their patio is big and is split into 2 parts, covered and uncovered. Decent beer selection, huge Scotch whiskey selection. They even do scotch flights! We had their taster platter and the scotch egg was amazing! Also ordered their mac & cheese and butter chicken. If you like Mac & cheese, you'll love this one. Wow! The butter chicken was good too! Our server was quick and attentive. To end, great food and great service!

Yelp
OMG. That doesn't even begin to describe this place. Donna served us and couldn't of had a better experience. Food was hot, fresh and fast. The price was amazing considering the location. This place was picked right out of Scotland and put here for us Canadians to enjoy. 5/5. Will be back soon.

Yelp
We love this local restaurant! Wonderful atmosphere and very welcoming owner. This time around we tried the burger, fish and chips and curry. Great burger bun, nice patty and fresh lettuce, onion and tomato. Thin-cut fries well cooked. Fish batter is lovely - light in texture, airy and a really big serving of fish. Butter chicken was well executed - good flavour and the right hint of spice. Service is very attentive and pleasant. Great selection of beer and - it goes without saying - Scotch! Wait for food was long, but such is life.

Yelp
We went for my birthday with a large group of various ages. The food is excellent, I especially liked the beer battered kosher pickles. The whiskey menu is wonderous and had many scotches from distilleries I had not even heard of. Which were great drams. The service was excellent, even putting up with my high maintenance family that is picky to no end. I can not recommend a better pub for Scottish food and great scotch.

Yelp
I was a regular customer from the day it opened and for many years later. Staff and owner are kind and friendly. Walked in what ever day of the week and had a great experience. Unfortunately my last few visits have not been enjoyable. You can't get in without a reservation. More smaller tables have been crammed to seat more people. Food and alcohol portions are smaller and more expensive. Newer staff are less friendly and less knowledgeable, which made for unpleasant visits. Now there is also corporate sponsorship, which, like many parades and events, takes away from the personal feel and enjoyment. I'm all for businesses being successful and growing but it comes at a cost. The cost for me and my friends are to find another place to call home. Very sad to have to move on.

Yelp
It you want proper Scottish food from a proper scottish lass i highly recommend 'The Calendonia' We ordered the Steak Special and the Hagis. The Steak was tender, cooked perfectly, with a delicious peppercorn sauce. The grilled veggies were a nice touch. Now, i had the Hagis....and it was absolutely amazing. Now those who may be nervous about idea of hagis i suggest that you give it a shot, you will not regret it. It was so flavourful and moist, it was better then my memory of Scotland a few years ago. Great place, great food, and remember...try the hagis ;)

Yelp
Ordered the Fish and Chips, Scotch Egg and Deep Fried Pickles followed it all up with coffee and a Deep Fried Mars bar. The place was packed but they were super accommodating and got us a table quickly. Service was friendly the entire night and we were checked up on often. All of the food we ordered was amazing. I'll definitely be back.
