The 18 Best Beer Gardens In London - London - The Infatuation

"The Castle is one of those new-ish pubs that feels like it could be anywhere in the UK. Its fittings are shiny, the grass is fake, and an Aperol spritz-branded goblet seems to accompany every casual first date. That said, the Tooting pub is a certified hot spot come summer. The garden is enormous—perfect for post-work drinks, or hunkering down in one of their many covered huts that can be pre-booked for birthday parties big, small, and massive." - jake missing, daisy meager, heidi lauth beasley

The Castle Tooting Review - Tooting - London - The Infatuation

We Don’t know the area at all but was pleasantly surprised by how gastro cool this pub was. We opted for the Sunday roast beef- compliments to the chef who cooked that meat to perfection- it fell apart in my mouth, roast potatoes were hot crunchy and well seasoned- I can honestly say it felt like a proper home cooked roast dinner. The staff were just really nice and pleasant, obvious to see they actually enjoy working in this pub - they worked well as a team you could hear them having quiet banter between each other, which was lovely to be seated in a happy environment Price -,standard London prices ££ 2 x roast beef 1 bottle of red 1 non alcoholic beer 1 dessert Including tip was £103 Good job guys x

Went in for a pint and came out with an appreciation for fantastic service. I was greeted by Angus with a stunning smile and fantastic hospitality. He took my difficult order with ease and left me with my beverages and a smile from ear to ear. Thank you to Angus and an honourable mention to Chloe! Keen to become a local!

First time coming to this spacious pub, in the heart of Tooting. Nicely decorated and it has a welcoming vibe. Came on a Thursday evening and it was quite busy. We sat in the cabin area, and it had a really cosy atmosphere. I look forward to coming back.

Amazing food, great ambience, one of the cleanest pubs I’ve been to and with good bartenders the experience of wine acts as a catalyst to the meal. Highly recommended, take your girls out on a date or your family for your celebration, these guys have it all!

The pub is really nice. Clean, neat and well organized offers a pleasant atmosphere. Sometimes the music can be too loud. The food was good and the drinks were as well. Went there quiet often, but the last time the beer was a bit different - like was not fresh. Overall, was satisfied. 🙂

Was the first glimpse of summer yesterday so went to the castle. Beers were good and they have a great selection. The food was a bit hit and miss. My friends. Vegetarian and had the plant burger. He said it was good and did finish it but he finishes everything. I went for sausages and mash. To be honest it was a bit bland. The sausages were a good size but lacked flavour and texture. Felt closer to a European style sausage than a traditional Cumberland or Lancashire. It was swamped in gravy which was ok but slightly under seasoned I’d say. And the mash wasn’t creamy and soft but part mash. Not sure if this is a new thing to add texture or not but mash is mash no? So lunch was a little underwhelming. I have been before and their fish and chips was epic so maybe I just didn’t chose my dish well. Service was impeccable. Hats off on the service front and the atmosphere is a 10/10. I will go again. It’s a great pub so don’t be out off. Maybe just don’t have the sausages and “mash”.

We stopped by early Sunday for lunch, wanting something other than a roast. Service was very friendly and efficient, personal but not too invasive: Lucy was wonderful. We chose a burger, hake with samphire and sausage and mash for the little one. All very good, with the hake being the stand out dish. Young’s food can sometimes be a bit hit and miss yet costly, but today was great. It was getting pretty busy by the time we left at 1.30, so felt relaxed and happy with our quieter family meal in the sunny dining room.

Google
This place has a great vibe and I would recommend it for sure. The only downside side was the food at the burger shack was very average and overpriced for what you got. Drinks were great though.

Yelp
This was sort of close to Tooting Bec station (which I have to admit is one of the stranger names for a railway station, though it certainly isn't the only one). Look, it's pretty classy, and they certainly have done it up somewhat, but I have to admit that it really wasn't one of the greatest pubs that I have been to. Still, it wasn't a bad pub.

Yelp
Great bar and amazing outdoor scenery. The private booths are such a great idea. After doing the bake off competition this was a great experience grabbing a beer afterwards. Suggestions- Might be quicker with cash on a busy night. Moose out

Yelp
Wow. I was impressed! Matt B and I met a couple of friends here on Sunday around lunchtime. We arrived around 1:30 and lots of friend groups and families were eating Sunday roasts. We sat down at a table where some children had been sitting before us. The kid's menus were there. We decided to both order off the kid's menu. Matt B got a burger and fries, and I got a 1/4 of a roast chicken with corn and fries. Both portions were pretty plentiful and delicious. For 6 pounds, it was a great deal. It's a gorgeous space with different types of seating: armchairs, tables with benches, tables with stools. It's really well lit and also huge. They have a quiz night and I'd like to try that out. If you're in Tooting or nearby, I'd definitely check out the Castle for food or drinks. It's nice especially if you're not a huge drinker because the menu is pretty extensive.

Yelp
Quite a large, light feeling pub with the typical Youngs selection of Ale on offer. Will show the football / rugby / cricket on the couple of screens it has. I have only seen it busy when there was a karaoke event going on, so it's generally pretty quiet. Seems to have the equipment to do a good Sunday carvery, however I have never been there for this. Generally a fair amount of space for a group of people, and it has a covered & heated smoking area with tables outside. You can certainly do worse in Tooting.

Yelp
The food here is very good so is the service!! My favorite part about third place is the baking competition that you can sign up for!! The recipes aren't hard but they are not easy! You can compete with your friends and have fun! We did it and the people who work there are so nice and helpful!! We got 2nd place out of quite a few cakes! The great British bake will satisfy any competitive baker!!

Yelp
My boyfriend lives and works in the area so I have been here a few times for Friday night drinks, things in it's favour are it has a lovely outdoor seating area, the enclosed areas on one side even have fires and the fake grass/astro turf stuff, definitely gives it less of a 'this used to be a carpark feel'. There is also plenty of space inside and they do quite a decent menu, I have had the sharing platter stuff and there is even a fairly good few veggie options. They do decent wines and mulled wine in winter, options on tap are quite varied. As a Youngs Pub it is victim to a recent revamp, I say victim as it's quite an expensive, they also stopped doing their nhs discount (which I imagine being so close to St George's is where they got a lot of their custom prior to their revamp), they are obviously trying to attract the richer crowd that has arrived with the gentrification of the area, not in itself a bad thing, but when every time I'm in there I can barely get standing room it kind of sucks. Another thing is not all of the garden area has heating, seems like a small thing but when it's rammed and seating outside is your only option it would be nice to be warm (it is England after all and our summer is normally about 2 weeks). Overall, nice for a few after work drinks.

Yelp
Well well well this northern boy paid a little visit down to the big smoke for a short 24 hour trip. Although I was once a regular frequenter of the capital, since the bezzie mates have all emigrated back to the north or more exotic locations like the white Isle of Ibiza, I have little reason to visit until now. Well there is a little London pad in Tooting now and this pub is a local. I say local it's still a number away as I don't trust that underground system of little trains travelling in the dark. Anyhow no matter we visited the Castle for dinner and drinks. Is not actually a Castle so don't get excited. Firstly I believe the history is this was once a rough working men's type afternoon beer drinking pub. Regulars only if you catch my drift. Oh but not anymore. It's had a huge makeover. Olive green and grey pastel shades splashed everywhere. Nice country French style decor feel with no matching chairs and open wine racks. Gotta love a bit of variety. There is also an impressive garden area that was once a gravel car park. Now it's large seating area with Fire pits. Heated booths. And wooden tables and outdoor sofas. The staff were all lovely and All in checked shirts. It was like a global review of every style check shirt one could think off. They were responsive. Genuinely interested and very smiley. The food was delicious and the glass of fizz to start the meal went down a treat. I would also recommend the Pinot Noir here. Reasonable priced and delicious. It was all quite reasonably priced. 2 courses each. Glass of champagne each and not take of red and less than £90 with a tip. The only downside was the footballwas on every large screen in the place so the romantic meal was competing with crowds of rowdy Londoners chanting and shouting at the TV. I would so go back. On a non football day lol

Yelp
The Castle was described to me as a place where people from Tooting go if they want to feel like they are in Stoke Newington. It was full of white middle class sorts all having fun and watching the rugby when I was last there. It was fine, looked beautiful and had large toilets with full length mirrors in the ladies! (I fixate on toilets in my reviews apparently) It was hard to find a seat due to the 6 nations, and I was blocked from sitting in the dining area by a very nice waiter who was very smoothly helpful making it clear I needed to be buying food to sit there. All in all it was fine, though didn't seem to capture the interest of the broader spectrum of locals.

Yelp
I really enjoy coming to this pub, mostly in the summer. The garden is beautiful and so nice to sit relax and socialise with friends in. However I do find the service a bit slow sometimes and it is pricey here (with it being a youngs pub) but you're basically paying for the atmosphere in my opinion. Haven't eaten here yet but wouldn't mind a try.

Yelp
When I lived in Tooting, the Castle was a bit of an old man's pub with carpet, quiet atmosphere and a quiz on Sundays so it was a big shock to see that it has now changed beyond recognition. The first thing is that the premises are huge and extend so far away from the entrance on Tooting High Street that it feels like you are in Earlsfield when sitting at the back. There is a big focus on food and both times I have been there recently the majority of punters were eating. I came on a Sunday afternoon and there were lots of young families tucking into roasts. The food is pricey for what is essentially pub grub, so being cheap I ordered a burger off the kids menu which is essentially half the price. The drinks are expensive, I paid more than £5 for a pint which for Tooting is steep, but I was happy to incur the charge as there a nice relaxed atmosphere there. The quiz has moved to Wednesday nights though! I would definitely recommend the Castle to anyone in the Tooting area.

Yelp
Not a big fan of this pub. I don't find the furniture too comfortable and the place is rarely full enough to generate an atmosphere. Nobody in here appears to be happy. The drinks are acceptable, so it is worth stopping in for a beer on a night out.

Yelp
Perfect place for friends, families, young and old (well bit more suited to the young) to spend and afternoon or evening over a few drinks and some food. I'm basing this off only one visit on a Sunday evening in January, but I got the sense it's a very popular place and has a high amount of regulars from around the area. Right beside the tube stop the location is great, inside it's quite nicely laid out and there a good sense of space, you don't feel too cramped can easily share a table with strangers. The important stuff - toilets were clean, tables cleared regularly and the clientele respectable. Good selection of wines and beers and a fairly impressive food menu. Staff seemed quite knowledgeable on their beers anyway and service was fine. Can't say if it would be as prompt on a Friday/Saturday night, that just gives me a reason to return and find out, and to try the huge half chicken dinner I saw getting delivered one shocked customer. Definitely not a budget price pub however, I think a pint of one of the London brews set me back £5.90 which was a little OTT. Don't let that turn you off. I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives and there's enough going for this place to see past that.

Yelp
The Castle was recently the recipient of a huge re-furb, and the place looks amazing. The atmosphere and decor is great - perfect for casual drinks or a date venue. The only thing letting it down at the moment is the service. My last visit saw us have to ask for menus, ask to order, send food back etc. - this was apparently due to a lot of new staff starting that week. The manager did apologise and discount our bill for us, which was great. Looking forward to going back when the staff are more experienced.

Yelp
I had no idea it would be so big and nice inside! Huge space, cool outdoor area with booths and a fireplace. The menu is exciting and the roasts are very nice, although not mind blowing. One weird thing was they insist on your paying at once or taking out a tab if you use table service outside. Out waitress said this was to make sure we didn't do a runner, which I guess must have happened before.

Yelp
A great pub if a tad in the pricey side! Visited with a friend who lives in the area. Friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere as well as an amazing burger. Usual drinks selection and what looked like a great outdoor area

Yelp
Love camping here for a drink or meal any time. There is a great outdoor garden bar that is going to be amazing in summer! Looking forward to ciders in the sun

Yelp
This is a lovely pub that has been done up really nicely, both inside and out. Drinks are a bit pricey, but not expressively so and it certainly doesn't put people off as it's often packed. Feels quite classy and upmarket and reflects the relatively recent change seen in the Tooting area.

Martin S.

Yelp
Very nostalgic pub with cozy corners. The food is very delicious fresh made and portions are really big. They have very big outside area. It's a good place for any occasion. It's also kids friendly and staff is very professional. I'm definitely coming back for Sunday Lamb Roast.

Yelp
Well, I'd love to write a raving food review for this place because it's SO PRETTY and the menu looks lovely. But alas, thanks to absolutely shocking service, I'm not able to review the food at all. Myself and a group of three friends came here for dinner last Thursday night about 8pm. I'd say it was about half busy - with about four waitresses manning the seated food area and I really think that it was some of the worst service I've ever seen. Strike One: was waiting about ten minutes to be noticed and seated. Strike Two: was waiting for so slow for our orders to be taken (by so long I mean about 20 minutes) then signalling to the waitress that we were ready to order her then walking towards us, nodding, then totally turning back round again and ignoring us again Strike Three: was trying to catch the other waitresses eye about four times and her amazing ability to completely ignore her presence (actually can only applaud her, she has quite the skill) Strike Four: was our waitress coming over to take our order, saying "oh are you ready to order?" even though SHE KNEW as we'd waved her over the first time and when I said "yes we have been for 10 minutes" not apologising and beginning to take our order but then apparently something was more important so she left us again with no word. Strike Five: was when we waited another 5 minutes for her to come back and she didn't so we reasoned that we weren't paying £12 a burger for such shocking service and decided to leave. I then told our waitress at the bar why we were leaving, she again didn't say sorry and simply said "I'm alone, come on" and gave me a dirty look. Even though there were loads of staff and she wasn't alone. I worked in bars for years and I know how horrible it is when it's really busy and there's a lot on and you don't have time. And I would have been totally sympathetic to her if we'd got even the hint of awareness that she was sorry or rushed off her feet. Instead she was rude, not smiling and we didn't receive one apology. It's such a shame as I do really like this place for drinks and was planning on booking one of their beer garden spaces for my 30th this month - which would have been a lot of custom for them but sadly I just can't risk receiving such terrible service again. Really, really disappointed. On the plus side we then went to Honest Burger and received awesome service and an awesome burger for much cheaper. Hooray!
