The Best Breweries and Brewpubs in Bend, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Visitors who walk down the stairs to the Cellar are transported to a traditional English pub. The small space includes a bar, a few tables, a small library, a neighboring used book store, and a classic “snug” — a room found in most English and Irish public houses where one can drink with some privacy. The English pub vibes extend to Porter Brewing’s cask-conditioned ales, served by hand-pumping imported beer engines rather than taps. For food, opt for something from Vi’s Pies, like a chicken pot pie or Scottish meat pie with a side of mushy peas and topped with homemade gravy. Other small bites, like a charcuterie board, wrapped sausage bites, and pretzels, are also available. The schedule for music varies between Appalachian, Irish bands, and others, and are listed on the Cellar’s Instagram feed." - Barb Gonzalez

Google
It’s a cozy place with an English-style interior, offering porter beer, red ale, and Guinness. The food consists of pre-made pies that are reheated in the oven, so you can order a few simple options like pies and pretzels. The bartender, Nicole, provided excellent service, which further enhanced the atmosphere and made for an enjoyable experience. I think this is a place worth recommending, and I plan to visit again in the future.

Google
Love music is what finally lured me in the door, and what a gem. Curry chicken pies w mashed peas were great. The decor, service, ambiance, taps... all kept me returning. I liked the Scottish Ale, Redmond Red, and ESB. The cream ale is also a delicious, light pour. Can't wait to try the cheese and onion pie next.

Google
This is such a cozy little British bar in Downtown Bend. Really friendly staff . The savoury pies are amazing and taste delicious - as do the sausage rolls 😋 They also sell British chocolate bars and British biscuits (cookies) too . They have “live music “ on certain nights also. Be sure to visit this bar and support local businesses . I would give this bar 10/10.

Google
Such a cool spot. The pies are outstanding!! Highly recommend. Good drink options too and really great employees.

Google
ALL CASK!!!! Normally if you can find a cask ale in America, they might have one - maybe two taps. And when you do, it’s never done proper British style. This place did EVERYTHING PROPER. From the cask to the food, glasses, pints, even in the cellar. Absolutely love this place and hope to be back.

Google
One of the best pubs I’ve been to. Amazing place and amazing vibes. The staff was great and the only place in town to get great cask beer. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Bend.

Google
Such a great cozy bar. My husband and I love dark beers so we decided to try this. It's just up hill from pine tavern on the left. Located in the cellar. Great beer selection. Friendly people. Amazing atmosphere. We loved it and will be back. Had homemade scottish pies with vegan options. We were not hungry but we are planning to go back and try those. So far my favorite cozy bar/pub in bend.

Google
Felt like I was walking into a local pub you might find in a small English village. They absolutely nailed it. Not a huge number of beers on tap but they really knocked the styles they had out of the park. Loved the ESB & they pour a fantastic Guinness. It's really cozy there and the staff we met were super friendly. Would for sure come back next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Stopped in for a pint after we go to Bend. The Cellar was a great unexpected find. They specialize in cast aged ales and it shows. Less carbonated that more common beer, but eminently drinkable. I had their Scottish Ale which was well balanced and smooth. I don't drink IPA's and appreciate a brewery that has a great selection of non-IPA beer. They also have some imported versions as well. My wife scored me an Irnbru from their cold case for later which was an unexpected surprise. The pub area is not big, but has a great British pub ambiance and the staff knowledgeable and attentive. My only regret was that I didn't have more time to sit and enjoy a couple of pints.

Yelp
Down in the cellar--not hard to find! Cask beer was good, had cask before. Just be prepared for room temp and non-carbonated beer--if you order the house beer. The atmosphere was super fun with the live music! Service was fast

Yelp
A cozy bar, nestled down below the street. Dark, intimate, with lots of cool vibes. Awesome taps, with the old school pump action. Sir John Falstaff stares you down as you enjoy your bev.

Yelp
A small dark Irish pub underground. Didn't eat but the savory pies sounded delicious. Cold beer refreshing. The bartender/host personable, seemed to enjoy his job. We'll go back.

Yelp
I visited Bend recently and I was excited to stop by The Cellar for its English cask ales. It was at the top of my list to visit because they don't focus on IPAs; I'm not an IPA fan, and sadly many breweries in Bend (and elsewhere) focus on IPAs to the exclusion of other beer styles. The Cellar has live traditional Irish music on Thursday nights so we stopped by briefly at 6 PM before a dinner reservation elsewhere. I wish we could have stayed longer! The place is small -- only about 30 seats, and a few of those taken by the musicians -- and it was nearly full when we arrived. We snagged two seats at the bar and the music started. A few other people trickled in so it was a packed house. We tried two of their cask ales, which were great, and then had to bid farewell.

Yelp
I had recently listened to a podcast interview with the owners of Porter Brewing Company about their cask ale program, so this was high on the list to try. Their main brewery is in Redmond, but they recently closed the taproom for visits so as of this writing The Cellar is the only location to get their beer. Cask Ales are traditional English beers kept in metal barrels, or casks, in a wooden rack and tipped at an angle. They are not carbonated like beers you may be used to (but are not "flat"); they use gravity or hand pumps to get the beer into your glass. They usually pour smooth. This is an excellent place to experience traditional English styles and its serving method. Due to the nature of the pour, you can't get these canned or to go, it's a must-visit and drink there place. As the name implies, this is in the cellar, with a clearly marked staircase on the street level going down. The two servers, one it was their first day, were immediately welcoming and friendly to explain the establishment and their beer. The place feels a little cold yet cozy; seating areas are eclectic with wooden chairs, stools, and various sized tables. Lighting is kept dark. We chose to sit in the little side room, with stained glass windows and fun ceiling. We each got a flight of 4 beers, most of going with the harder to find styles. Prices were reasonable, especially for the quality and rarity of finding these in the US. If you're in Bend looking for unique stops for beer, look no further than Porter Brewing / The Cellar.

Yelp
The Cellar is a small, intimate outlet of Porter Brewing (a Redmond brewery) operating out of a below-ground level space in downtown Bend that specializes in cask-conditioned beers. Look for the stairs descending from the north corner of Wall and Oregon. It's a unique and welcome addition to the Bend beer scene. - As I mentioned, it's small. So small that I imagine a lot of folks make their way down the steps only to find no available seat (I'm speculating). I tend to patronize bars during early afternoon hours so I've not had an issue so far. Speaking of steps, mobility-challenged patrons will have an issue just getting to the front door. - They have a bar with a handful of stools, a long table against one wall, a high-top in the middle, a small table against the other wall, a cozy two-seater table in the corner and a semi-enclosed table in the back which would be good for a group. - Full size beers poured here - imperial pints, not the 14 or 16 oz offerings of most places. - Food offerings comprise pies, meat pies, although a veggie version is included. I haven't tried any of them yet. - The pub is very English. The beer, the ambiance, even the Shut the Box game you'll find over by the entrance. And there's a cool Shove Ha'penny game hanging on the entrance wall (I plan to make both games in my woodshop.) - Prices are good; service is Bend friendly.

Yelp
The Cellar is a cute, cozy gem tucked away on a side street. We enjoyed the beers and the bartender who was very friendly and knowledgeable about Cask beers. Love the loose leaf tea service and you get to pick out your own antique tea cup. Really unique place. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back for more beers and to try their cottage pies.
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
This is truly a hidden gem, you can get a flight of their four housemade brews and an excellent meal of their cottage pie with mushy peas. I highly recommend this spot and will be back!

Gregg M.

Yelp
Wow this place is amazing! Such a great ambiance, beer on cask was fantastic. The pretzel was a 10! And Lisa who was working was absolutely great to serve us! Thank you Lisa! Can't wait to visit again.

Austin B.

Yelp
Great time here. Had a variety of English options. Porters, ales, and ciders. Learned a lot from bartender. Great vibe inside, I would recommend to all. Pot pies were amazing!

Yelp
Excellent food, great service and a very cool and welcoming atmosphere. A giant thanks for the tea to go!

Yelp
Real Ale is an unknown to most Americans. Tasting a beer without carbonation may be new, but it's worth effort. What a rarity! Very hard to find any place with dedication to real ales so I feel fortunate to find this gem. If you're into Bud/Miller/Coors, don't come here. If you want to explore nuance, come and enjoy. This place is a prime example of what beer wad for generations (and still is in parts of the world that respect history)
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
The beer is fantastic, seriously it was awesome! Staff is friendly. Get the pretzel as well, and you'll have a winning combo!

Patricia S.

Yelp
Customer service A+, was able to fix me a bag of loose leaf tea to take back to my hotel to enjoy in the morning. The Classic pie crust was golden and just the right amount of sauce for a topping. Mashed peas completed the experience. Thank you so much !

Yelp
My wife and I are connoisseurs of cask ales. Most breweries simply do not have cask ales. The few that do generally only have one on tap at a time. It is a very niche way to drink beer in America, while it is the popular way to drink beer in England. I don't think it has gained much attraction in America because of poor marketing. It can be described as room temperature, mildly carbonated beer. In fact, it should be described as mild, drinkable, creamy beer that gives off a different flavor profile than heavily carbonated, ice-cold beers. The carbonation occurs naturally in the cask rather than with added gas or additional sugars after fermentation. While only a fraction of US breweries have one beer on cask, The Cellar had eight! We were very impressed. We tried to give the crown for most cask ales in the US to the brewer pouring ales at The Cellar, but he mentioned that there was a bar in Seattle, the Capercaillie, that actually had more. We enjoyed the REG the Great, Best Bitter, and the 1772, English Porter. We could've stayed for another but we had other places to explore in Bend. If we ever return to Bend, of all the establishments we sampled in the city, The Cellar is the one we would sample again.

Yelp
The server was rude, and inconsiderate. We were trying to reserve seats for our other colleagues that were meeting us and she said they only do first come first serve. Really? They are joining us and we were already there trying to save more seats for them, and we can't? She put down the food on the table without talking to us and didn't follow up how the food was or if we needed anything. Never smiled while we were there. And then when she saw that we were not eating (but still we have food on the table) she told us that they have the room reserve for people coming soon. Okay... but I thought they don't take reservations?? So rude and disrespectful.

Yelp
SLOW food. Country sausage pie was meh. As was veggie pie. Don't order a shandy. Enjoyed the environment but we wont be back. Too bad.

Alphonso R.

Yelp
Nice to see a spot like this in town. They upgraded the food, and I'm glad to see that. Service seems here and there but overall not bad. It is still waiting for its personality to bloom. Great underground hideaway. Nice to have one after the platypus died.

Mary W.

Yelp
Love the Cellar, wonderful atmosphere, intimate and kind of romantic, with a diverse selection of unique beers (Bitters, IPA, Red, Brown, Porter- cask conditioned, hand pumped and brewed locally) and a variety of imported Old Country brews on nitro & cask too (like Old Speckled Hen, Guinness, ). No flat or warm beers here, just great taste - and don't even get me started on the homemade meat pies - out of this world, with real pea mash on the side (don't knock it until you try it, LOL).

Michelle L.

Yelp
When Harry Potter meets Ted Lasso! Who knew we had a cute, quaint pub in Bend! We just had beers which were english style. Fun experience!

John D.

Yelp
Super chill vibe and friendly staff. I have yet to try the food but the beet is really great and would recommend!
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Excellent little pies and very cool atmosphere. The bartenders were helpful and the service was good. The pies are a little small, so I recommend ordering 2.

Joe A.

Yelp
Great location, and a fun underground ambience. Guinness on nitro is always a pleasure, and their own cask ales were good too. Service was friendly and prompt. Didn't try the food but looked good. Pouring Guinness correctly would have earned them a 5th star, but 4/5 suits the Cellar. Would return.

Yelp
Great place for a pint from a legit beer engine. Beer is good and the folks are friendly. Will definitely come back!

Bob L.

Yelp
Beers were very good like most pub beer but served a little warmer. Food was excellent. Nice cozy atmosphere. We'll be back!
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
Loved this place. The pies were great as was the beer and the company I was with and the people I met! I'll be back

Jenny S.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place because I love all things English. I have BBC Sounds on my iPhone and listen nightly! Unfortunately, it was the absolute unfriendliness of the gal working the bar that ruined it for me. I get the English personality - but she's not - and it just wasn't pleasant. Really too bad but I won't be back. Perhaps your experience will be better.

Ron M.

Yelp
Great ales and atmosphere, but must have been a bad day for bartender. We'll definitely try again.

Bethany C.

Yelp
Passing through Bend and stumbled upon this gem of a place! The beer was exactly what I was craving and the pies were delicious. Was planning on stopping for one beer but changed our plans so we could enjoy another. Lisa was great, provided very helpful service. Also loved the ambiance of the place, overall wonderful experience and will definitely stop by again if I'm ever in Bend.

Brion D.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE. IMO, a MUST do in Bend for breweries. We were laughing the entire time we were there, the people were great, the ambiance is amazing. Feels like a place I would go to weekly if I lived in town. They gave us some awesome samples, and the beer is SFG!

Diana S.

Yelp
Best meat pies I have ever had! Very cool atmosphere, just like the local hangout would be if you were in England.
google avatar

Jake J.

Yelp
Place is amazing. Old school English pub with awesome traditional cask ales and various meat pies

Kellie W.

Yelp
great ambience and you have to try the home made pot pies!

Jason L.

Yelp
I stopped by for lunch and was delighted by the friendly staff, friendly patrons, and wonderful food and drink. I had the Scottish meat pie, the Jackpine IPA, and some great conversation. The Pie was very tasty, I've only been to Edinburgh once and it was a brief visit, but this pie tasted like the fare I had out there. The pickled onion accompanied it quite nicely and the mushy peas were absolutely delicious. The cellar chilled IPA was not as "warm" as the ales I had in London, it was actually still refreshing. The barman was very friendly and carried on easy conversation with everyone in the establishment. The Pies take 20-30 minutes per, and they are not large. All in all, the food and drink alone get at least 4 stars, but the overall experience and atmosphere really push it over the top. I would highly recommend that you don't come here so that I won't have to worry about there being a crowd upon my next visit.
