Theo Is Seattle’s Most ‘Instagrammable’ Chocolate Shop | Eater Seattle

"Ranked the second most Instagrammable chocolate shop in the U.S. by Betway (behind Los Angeles’s Compartes Chocolates), Ballard’s Theo Chocolate earned its spot by sheer social metrics—Betway summed Facebook likes/followers and Instagram followers—and, according to the write-up, the reason Theo beat out chocolate makers in bigger cities amounts to one thing: photos of chocolate!" - Harry Cheadle

Lovely selection of chocolates corner to corner. Lovely atmosphere, really feels like the place was made with love and care. The chocolate tasting is a must, genuinely something I highly recommend to explore the unknown. I spent a good among of time really tasting chocolate, as if it were my first time.

Amazing chocolatier in Echo Park. I sent my mother in Cleveland some browned butter bourbon caramels. Quote “These are unlike any caramels I’ve ever had. Decadent!” I’ve attached pictures Mom sent. One’s missing because she couldn’t resist! They arrived promptly, exquisitely packaged, and with a hand-written note from Kala, one of the owners! The rest of my holiday shopping is happening here. Now, the only question is, how soon can I get over there to peruse their Wonka-esque (but better!) assortment. Kala, thank you and save me some chocolate!💝🍫☕️🤤❤️💕

Best cacao in LA. Rich, velvety drinking cacao and a massive chocolate selection—single-origin, bean-to-bar, ceremonial, you name it. Definitely the best cacao and chocolate store in the city. The owners are friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to guide you. Neighborhood gem. Perfect for gifts or a treat.

Google
Well there is a reason why this place has almost a perfect review. It's because the place is such that it has so many chocolates and it has so many various kinds of chocolates for you to explore and offer that it's mesmerizing. They also have a bar. You can get coffee. You can get chocolate to drink which I tried a shot. And next time when I go I will try their hot chocolate. Absolutely must visit

A chocolate lover’s paradise. This place has it all, well stocked ethically sourced bars for all your chocolate needs. I love the design of the place, it gives it a Charlie and the chocolate factory type of vibe. There is seating available for anyone that wants to enjoy their chocolate and hot cocoa too. The staff is friendly and fast with service, Olivia is very knowledgeable about products and helped out a lot in choosing the right type of chocolate for me. I also ordered the Hot Chocolate Cup, which was a sweet, creamy, dessert in a cup. Loved this place and will definitely come back again.

If you like chocolate, this is a great location to visit. There is so much to see and select whatever you're craving for. Everything is chocolate related. It was a little expensive but worth the quality. The French drink was a little thick, but that's the way it's made. You have to appreciate the taste and quality of the drink. Bought some drinkable chocolate to take home to enjoy a good cup of chocolate drink. I'm definitely coming back for some gifts.

Google
I was amazed by how many chocolates they have! It was so hard to make up my mind and pick my selections. I ended up buying eight of them. Of course, there was hit and miss. But it was so fun trying different flavors of chocolates not knowing what to expect. My personal favorite is the chrysanthemum one. It’s so authentic, tastes just like the chrysanthemum drink. The yuzu citrus one was surprisingly disappointing. It did not taste anything like Yuzu nor citrus. Don’t buy it. I will definitely go back and get more!

The name The Chocolate Dispensary might throw you off—it sounds like you’re walking into a boutique edibles shop. You’re not. No THC here, just pure, unadulterated chocolate bliss. Once that’s clear, you’ll see it for what it is: a beautifully curated chocolate shop in the heart of Echo Park with a vibe that’s both upscale and welcoming. The selection is thoughtfully global, with craft chocolate bars and bonbons sourced from some of the best bean-to-bar makers around the world. We’re talking nuanced, single-origin darks, inventive flavor infusions (think black sesame, smoked salt, or wild Amazonian fruit), and limited-batch treasures you won’t find at your corner grocer. If you’re the kind of person who can taste the terroir in your 70% cacao, this is your candy store. —felt compelled to add to this amazing store’s review Tucked into Echo Park like a secret meant only for true chocolate obsessives, this shop is hands-down one of the most unique, curated dispensaries of rare, fine chocolate I’ve ever visited—anywhere. You walk in and immediately feel like you’ve stepped into a temple of cacao, not a store. What makes it truly exceptional, though, is the human touch. Heather—who was working the day I came in—is an absolute chocolate sommelier. She wasn’t just helpful; she was illuminating. I mentioned having tasted a wild Amazonian milk chocolate at Meteora, and with just that clue, she guided me right to Luisa Abram’s exquisite bar—made with wild cacao and Jersey cow milk. It’s the kind of chocolate that reminds you what chocolate used to taste like before mass production and sugar overload. Heather broke down the sourcing, the terroir, even the fermentation process of the beans like she was walking me through a wine tasting. And she did it all with warmth, zero pretense, and an obvious passion for the craft. This is one of the very few places in LA that stocks bars like this. If you’re used to buying chocolate at the grocery store, come here once and your whole palate will change. Five stars, no question.

Yelp
chocolate dispensary is seriously dangerous if you love chocolate. shelves on shelves of chocolate from all over the world, plus a cozy little café where you can grab coffee or hot chocolate and actually enjoy being there. It feels curated but not pretentious, which I really appreciate. I went in "just to look" and obviously left with way more than planned. The selection is insane -- classic favorites, fun finds, and a bunch of stuff you don't see everywhere. Perfect for gifts, or honestly just treating yourself. The staff is super friendly and helpful without hovering, and the whole space has a relaxed, neighborhood feel. It's one of those spots you're happy exists nearby. Highly recommend if you're in the area -- I'll definitely be back

Yelp
We were greeted warmly upon entering by the friendly and engaging owner, who offered recommendations and encouraged us to ask any questions. They have unique chocolate sections, including "weird" and vegan options - truly eccentric! We enjoyed a $10 chocolate flight with 10 different types, a great way to sample international flavors and textures. We purchased a bar from the flight for $16, a bit pricey but worth supporting this local business, especially with the owner's kindness. At happy hour, she even gifted us a complimentary beverage. A fun scavenger hunt is one of the coolest things they do - they have versions for kids and adults. I mistakenly grabbed the kids' one! The scavenger hunt words are found on packaging or throughout the shop, as the owner mentioned everything is fair game. I wish I could have spent more to support this wonderful shop, but we'd already spent our budget exploring the city, and I'm watching my sugar intake. I highly recommend visiting this great shop in Echo Park. Remember, this is a chocolate dispensary, not a weed one! We were immediately greeted as we entered. The owner was very friendly and engaging. She offered some recommendations and asked us to please ask her of any questions we might have. They have different sections of chocolate such as: weird, vegan etc. They truly have some eccentric types of the chocolates. They even had a chocolate flight where you could sample 10 different types of chocolates for $10. This was a good way for us to discover some different kinds of chocolate from around the world with different tastes and textures. We ended up buying a bar of chocolate from the chocolate flight. It cost $16 which is a bit more expensive than what I pay for the chocolate, but I was more than happy to support a local mom and pop type of business especially since the owner was super kind and engaging. For the start of happy hour, she even brought us a complimentary beverage to sample. One of the coolest things they do at the Chocolate Dispensary is a scavenger hunt. They have two kind of scavenger hunts: one for children and one for adults. I didn't know that and grabbed the one for children. What does that say about me? I suppose I like it easy..Anyways, the scavenger hunt had different words that are found either on the front or back of the packaging or on anything inside the shop. As the owner mentioned everything inside the shop was fair game. I really wanted to spend more money at the shop to support this wonderful shop, but we already spent too much money exploring the city. Not to mention, I'm trying to watch my sugar intake. I recommend y'all come to Echo Park and support this great shop. Remember, this is a chocolate dispensary not a weed dispensary. Sorry stoners!

Yelp
I don't think I have ever seen so much chocolate in one place and I worked for a week at a Twix/M&M factory. In all honesty, the variety of chocolate at the Chocolate Dispensary is beyond compare. The staff is really friendly and was primed and ready to help guide us to the right chocolate. Plus there is a drink bar in the back where they mix wonderful chocolate and cacao drinks. The store is stocked floor to ceiling with varieties of chocolates like few have ever seen on nice wooden shelves and a number of displays. Definitely stop here if you're a chocolate connoisseur or know one!

Yelp
I haven't been there in person yet but I sent gifts across country and now I'm the superstar gift giver! My family is very particular about chocolates and have travelled all over Europe, including a trip to the Chocolate Museum in Vienna. My gift to my mother, the ultra decadent browned butter bourbon caramels (pics attached) still knocked her socks off. She received (cross country no less) an elegantly wrapped package with a hand-written note from Kala, one of the owners! If you are wanting to give anyone, including yourself, a special confection this year, close that tab on your browser, new tab: www.chocolatedispensary.com. That's it, you're done. I need to stop writing because there is some French drinking chocolate calling to me! They have club subscriptions so I'm about to find out about that. My next gift drops to my sister-in-law tomorrow. She's getting an adventurous assortment and my globe trotting sister? Gift card. Coming to see you soon, Kala and team! DMV

Yelp
Yes, I recommended. It's really good. And the people are really friendly. There's one place that you need to go and visit. I promise you, you will get disappointed.

Yelp
My friends and I stumbled along this darling little chocolate shop on our walk to Bacetti's for dinner and just had to stop! Inside is the most warm, welcoming store filled with antique furniture displaying over 700 types of elegant chocolate from all over the world. The owner immediately made us feel like old friends and began reading our chocolate energy and making spot-on suggestions of flavors that I'd never ever have picked up, and wow... are they incredible! Their tasting bar offers shots or pretty espresso sized cups of warm, liquid heaven in a cup... not the sticky-sweet hot chocolate you might be thinking of, but warm, melted chocolate that was pure decadence while we browsed and the owner gave fun and engaging information about the different chocolates she was recommending. Folks with their furry friends strolled by for a free pet-friendly treat. The whole experience was pure joy! I had no intention of buying chocolate, but walked out with over $60 in the most beautiful chocolate that I simply could not choose from, and have thoroughly enjoyed every morsel! Treat yourself with a visit here. Take some with you on your sunset stroll around Echo Park Lake - it will be the highlight of your day.

Yelp
This is a locally owned and operated "family-run" business that is dedicated to providing customers a delicious experience. I visited the store in-person during a past trip to the area (prior to the business being featured in Yelp). I've also purchased online and have had products mailed to me as well. My experiences with this business (both in-person and online orders) have been excellent! The store is charming and well organized. The ambiance and staff are very welcoming. The products offered are vast and many are unique [to me]. They offer bars, snacks, beverages, baking, "Bundles", and more. Products they offer include -but are certainly not limited to- hard for me to find keto friendly and paleo friendly chocolates. The products I've purchased were 'new to me' and I've not seen them available anywhere else. I've tried some items that I was skeptical about, only to find them very much worth the experience (such as one including "forest crystals", and chocolate -with no sweetener added whatsoever). In the "Bundles" section on their website, I ordered the "Hardcore Bundle" featuring dark chocolate selections which I found to be very good choices. I've noticed that they also offer specials throughout the year and have been great incentives for my purchases. I signed up for their email list to receive notice of future offers, special events, and new product information. The online website is easy to navigate and has search features to help me find selections that fit my criteria. I've used the chat feature on their website, and that helped me navigate to selections. They are ready, willing, and able to assist in finding products in their inventory that meet your criteria. The chocolates mailed to me were well packaged, and in the box of my most recent purchase was included an ice pack (the goal being to ensure it arrived in pristine condition, which it did). I find many of the products are visually appealing (packaging and product itself) and are great for gifting. Since my in-person visit, I've noticed via their social media account posts that they've installed a beautiful 'chocolate bar'! They also offer in-person special events. My favorites so far: London Chew, Forest, and Coracao Unsweetened Dark Chocolate with Vanilla. It's delicious to support this small business!

Yelp
Literally no intention to visit the store, I just happened to park nearby and walked past it as I was heading to Canyon Coffee. Carrying the word 'dispensary' in its name triggered my curiosity undoubtedly. The attendant did mention that they carried chocolate from countries all over the world. She mentioned a number that my foggy brain couldn't recall LOL. If you're first timer like me, I bet you would totally feel lost and extremely indecisive being brought tons of different options, all came with super nice packaging and all seemed like screaming 'TRY ME'. It literally felt like entering a grocery store the moment I stepped into the shop, just that all they sold were literally chocolate *SHINY EYES*! They did arrange everything pretty well that browsing throughout the store felt like you went to the IKEA of chocolate; could probably make me spend hours! My recommendation would be tell the attendant your chocolate preference, like milk/dark/white/or combo of either; then what kind of mixed-ins you love to go with your chocolate. What's best is they do offer some options with relatively small packsizes so you can try multiple options. By the cashier, they even offer individual serving-sized ones. I got further spoiled by the thick slightly spiced hot chocolate they served as compliments when I visited the store. Warm delicate sip to enjoy the meticulously designed store! I got different brands with various kinds of chocolate for this first purchase and so far all of them did not disappoint!

Yelp
So lovely! a little gift shop, with a very knowledgeable lovely lady. Not sure of her role, but she was splendid. Was picking for a VERY old school chocolate, See's fan. and opted for something new. There was Chocolate from all over the world. They gave me ice packs to go for the chocolate, since i had a long drive. Definitely would go again for gifts, or to treat muh self ! lol.

Yelp
I recently did a chocolate tasting experience with Kala and it was amazing! The chocolate was unique and delicious, and Kala was delightful. She was insightful and well versed in all things chocolate. I can't recommend this enough!

Yelp
Wow, amazing, unique, and delicious! Drinking chocolate is the star, and their chocolate creations are stellar. My favorite is their very dark house chocolate by itself. Worth driving hours to get to.

Yelp
Great place to learn more about chocolate. Delightful furniture displaying it all. Can't wait for the world to evolve where they offer plantation tours and tasting around the world!

Van B.

Yelp
The owners are so knowledgeable and friendly. My dog always pulls me in there when we walk by because she gets a treat every time... then I end up getting a treat for myself too. I usually try at least 2 different chocolate bars every time. The selection is huge and it's all ethically sourced. I've had such unique flavors and know I can go in with a craving for anything and they will have it. They recently opened a little cafe in the back of the shop, which I still need to try. There's plenty of seating outside and some inside as well. I've also been for a chocolate tasting and it was intimate and lovely. If you're a chocolate lover, you need to try this place.

Yelp
This is a terrific little store where they sell over 700 kinds of chocolates from all over the world! All products are from small businesses that use sustainable practices. They have chocolate tastings where you can try 10 different kinds of chocolates and boy was that fun and delicious! They also have coffee pastries and french hot chocolate that are exceptional! The owner Kala is so friendly , helpful and knowledgeable about everything chocolate! She will help you decide because there are so many kinds to choose from. They had a beautiful selection of specialty Easter chocolates too. A perfect place to purchase a perfect gift! I love this place and can't wait to go back and taste more choice chocolates!

Jacqueline C.

Yelp
If you love chocolate but hate slavery this is place!! Fair trade only!! The proprietress is very friendly and helpful. Prices are great. She says women and men like chocolate just the same, which is patently false, but I think that was just her cheeky sense of humor. Next time I'm in Los Angeles I will buy chocolate here!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
The Fenech Hot Chocolate was so warm and cozy. It feels like a taste of Paris in here.
google avatar

Violet G.

Yelp
If you are looking for the best quality chocolate from the world, this is the place to visit! The staff is welcoming and helpful in assisting you navigate the variety of options. As an added bonus, the cafe offers coffee, hot chocolate and chocolate sampling. I had a mocha which was a delicious blend of both. The ambiance is relaxed and super fun to just peruse the shelves of beautifully designed chocolate wrappers! These kind of shops are rare and we are fortunate to have this gem to shop in!
google avatar

Victoria C.

Yelp
This is the coolest shop!! Happened to come across it on Yelp and thought - yep, I need some chocolate. The attendant who helped me was SO knowledgeable and helpful! I asked a bunch of questions and ended up picking up a few bars, including one of her favorites that she recommended (Fossa's Pulut Hitam) and it's now my favorite! Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Really nice shop with the best of the best chocolate in the world. I could spend hours here just looking at all the beautiful packaging on each bar. The staff is super nice; they answered all my questions and pointed me in the right direction for the specific kind of chocolate I was looking for. Protip: if this is your first time trying this type of chocolate, the trick is to take a small piece and let it melt on your tongue. This brings out all the flavors. So yummy!

Wendy C.

Yelp
My whole family loves this place. We've spent at least $300 this month alone. I was a little disappointed when my child didn't have a quarter for the bag $.25 and she wouldn't waive the fee!!! It's the little things that make such an impact. We will be taking a break from this place even though it will break my child's heart.

Leanna L.

Yelp
My kids love this place. In addition to an impressive amount of chocolate they have delicious coffee and THE BEST gelato. You can spend 5 mins strolling through or 2 hours on a laptop, the atmosphere is welcoming and calm. My kids love that they have a scavenger hunt in the store- find everything and win a free truffle! They just started selling wine as well, hopefully by the glass soon.

C R.

Yelp
Amazing store. They have great chocolate bars. I'm very impressed. I'll definitely be back. Exceptionally high quality chocolate bars and a huge selection.

Giovanni R.

Yelp
I went today after driving by. Super cute shop but that's where all that ends. I loved walking around and looking at the chocolate they have to offer. I ordered an iced coffee with oatmilk & the service was fine. Nothing crazy. The coffee was terrible though. Hated the taste and I got one ice cube. Just one regular sized ice cube. Not interested in going back this place.

Steve C.

Yelp
Pro tip: skip the Big Dumb Line at Canyon Coffee and walk just a few doors down Echo Park ave to the Chocolate Dispensary, where you can get excellent pour-over coffee in a relaxing space with no line and pleasant service. Lots of interesting-looking chocolate too.

Bri S.

Yelp
I love what Kala and Dale have created! The Chocolate Dispensary is my new go-to for a sweet treat in Los Angeles. They have an incredible selection - something for every mood! Their chocolate tastings are the best because you can try a variety of their offerings and have a curated experience without having to buy 10 bars of chocolate to do so. But.... warning: you'll still want to buy 10 bars of chocolate once you're done! Their staff is so helpful and friendly, the location is central and their space/layout is easy to navigate.

Andrew B.

Yelp
Chocolate Dispensary has a huge and phenomenal selection of ethically and sustainably sourced chocolate. I ordered several bars online and they were delivered timely and delicious!

Glenn W.

Yelp
I have to confess that I didn't watch the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and therefore have never seen this much chocolate in one place in my life. The owners, Dale and Kala, traverse the globe procuring exotic chocolate and bring it back to their amazing space so you can indulge. If you're a chocolate lover and aren't at The Chocolate Dispensary, you're in the wrong place. Btw, they serve coffee there too in case you are one of those of us who believe that chocolate and coffee pair well.

Maya's Brigadeiro B.

Yelp
Brilliant! How did an all-chocolate shop like this not exist in L.A. before the Chocolate Dispensary? The owners are kind, the selection is endless, and their dedication to ethical practices and the good craftsmanship of the chocolatiers they bring into the shop is admirable. This place is a rare gem in L.A. If you haven't visited yet, RUN, then relax and treat yourself to a cup of "real" hot chocolate and grab a few special bars to take home.

LA R.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING. I love chocolate, I love travel and this place brings the two together into one dreamy place. Chocolate from all over the world. Friendly faces, happy people, in a cozy environment. Plus...great gifts. I loaded up to spread holiday cheer to my friends. If I could give it 10 stars, I would!!
