What a charming café in the OBX! This cottage styled restaurant is nestled in a gorgeous knoll surrounded by majestic trees and beautiful foliage. The gardens are well manicured, there's a lovely gazebo and some outdoor seating should you have to wait for a table. We made reservations and were led to our table right away. We sat out on a little enclosed porch area with floral wall decorations and chintz valances. The other rooms were just as quaint, appointed with antiques, straw hats, flowery wreaths, vintage pictures, lots of pink and sage, the main room features a fireplace.
Our server greeted us with a smile and was attentive and polite throughout the evening. She went over the specials and she knew her stuff! I chose one of the specials; the surf and turf, filet mignonette and tuna steak (each 4 oz.) with garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed broccolini. The filet was so tender I could cut it with my butter knife and the light mushroom sauce was delicious. I wasn't keen on the tuna... it was meh. The potatoes and the greens were perfect accompaniments to my meal! The presentation was beautiful and the meal was superbly executed. My table mate ordered the fried shrimp and fries and loved both! With my meal, I had a glass of Malbec that was smooth, not too dry and complemented the filet well.
When the dessert tray was presented, we allowed our temptations to rule! My friend chose the chocolate chip pie which was tasty (I had a few bites!) and I ordered the crème brûlée. Frankly, I wasn't fond of my dessert, and the observant server noticed I set it aside. She asked about it and I mentioned it was not set firmly, a bit soupy. She took it off the bill and the owner came and apologized, and even offered to bring me a different choice. What great customer service. I declined the dessert, but was impressed with the prompt and courteous resolution.
The facilities were designed with a garden theme, pretty and clean. We loved our dining experience here and I'd return next time I'm in the OBX! Sooo close to 5 stars.
One side note: the server station is a bit awkwardly located in the narrow hallway, across from the restrooms and near the sunroom. There was some precarious congestion getting in and out, with customers waiting for the facilities, the hostess seating people, the servers bustling with dishes, especially when it got busy. Be careful there.
