The Commissary Review - CBD - Cape Town - The Infatuation

"The Commissary is a small, graffiti-covered space in the center of town from the same team as The Test Kitchen and The Potluck Club. But instead of plates that were definitely constructed with tweezers, the food here can only be described as American carnival food with an Asian twist - things like barbecue pork belly with toasted coconut and deep-fried, skewered shrimp “prawn dogs.” They don’t take reservations, but you can wait for your table over beers at The House of Machines next door." - Dana Alloy

Google
Amazing food and retail section! We got the fried oysters, Cobb salad, Cuban sandwich, and burger and they were all outstanding- made fresh to order with great flavor and fresh ingredients. Highly recommend for a quick and delicious lunch and to grab some retail goodies! They also have a happy hour from 4-6 and do fish fry’s on Fridays!

Google
One of the best salads I have ever had, the shaved Brussels one. Had the Duck Poppers too, they were delicious, yet too rich for me. Friendly staff and quiet enough to hear yourself. Good prices.

Erica L.

Google
This food! So, so good. We went for brunch on a Sunday. I ordered some of the sides- on, most of them, including the Brussels sprouts. The bacon was the best I’ve ever had, I had fig jam with half of my biscuit and the other half I had with their homemade andouille sausage gravy which is so good! The cheese grits- wow! There was a cheese sauce, not just some added cheese. I will say I was disappointed that I didn’t enjoy the Bloody Mary with the everything but the bagel seasoning as much as I thought I would. The market is also nice inside, lots of fresh products. Will definitely be going back when we are in town again to try their full menu.

Google
Was poking around this area of New Orleans and spotted this gem. The food was incredible and the beverages were on point. Chatted it up with the bartender (owner?) for a bit and she was super friendly and attentive. We particularly loved the smoked fish dip with radishes and fried saltines as well as the fried oysters. The market also had a nice selection of specialty goods.

Andrew L.

Google
Whewwww I tell you. This was incredible. Duck poppers, absolutely delicious. Duck prosciutto was the best cured meat I’ve ever had. Everything was just delicious and colorful and unique. Couldn’t recommend more!

Amber J.

Google
Ordered a cobb salad and this is what I got. SOOO much lettuce, 4 crumbles of blue cheese and 8 bacon bits. It also comes with creole pecans, which is unusual yet interesting, but they put SOOO many compared to the other toppings. So basically what a got was a nut salad, with a dash of blue cheese and bacon. AND NO EGG. For $20, i’m extremely disappointed. Edit: After i got over my initial disappointment about the portions - i sat down to eat, and I will say it was delicious. the dressing is really what makes it good. but i still believe they need to reevaluate the set up of the salad. also the bacon bits were hard as rocks and hurt my teeth, so i took all 8 of them off.

Google
First time going, and will for sure be back! The pimento cheese dip with crackers, and the Gulf Shrimp roll was outstanding. The food came out really fast, and it was super fresh! They have trivia on Wednesday evenings, and the man that ran it was very entertaining!

Caity B.

Google
This place is awesome. Had Boulin balls, a shrimp sandwich and a Cuban. Great beer, great food, great music playing, friendly staff. What not to love?

Yelp
Came here for a weekday lunch after having some beer at Urban South. They have a limited menu, but don't let that deter you! We shared the fried boudin balls - would order EVERY time! We also shared the Cajun Cuban and shrimp roll. Both sandwiches were fresh and flavorful. The Cuban had a nice balance of sweet and spice and I think was my overall favorite. I noticed that they also have a case for frozen food and refrigerated food that they prep in their kitchen. lastly, they also have small market hall where you can buy snacks, a variety of jams/spices, and wine. This is such a fun addition to the area and definitely plan to return and try their premade meals.

Yelp
We all loved their sandwiches! We had the Creole Cuban, shrimp roll, and fried oyster mushroom sandwich. Even though they don't have a kids menu, our 5yr old daughter found something she liked (smashed burger). The gentleman who took our order was very knowledgeable about the menu. We ate outside on their covered porch which offered plenty of shade.

Yelp
Quick and tasty bites with an amazing patio! This was our first stop in New Orleans and we were craving something quick and easy, this was just the place. The creole cuban sandwich is the perfect combination of creole seasoning with a traditional Cuban. Extremely fun twist on the classic. Would get this again! The shrimp salad roll was very refreshing and overall just *fresh*. The temp was hovering in the low 80s so it was the perfect dish on a warmer day. Also was good balance of flavors, not too fishy! The patio/outdoor space is amazing. I kept looking out at it and dreaming what type of events I would host! Friendly & quick service, would visit again!

Yelp
Ordered a smash burger, Creole Cuban, fries, and the Fried Brussels Sprouts. The food was amazing! 10/10. Good music playing, plenty of space to hang out. Great ambiance. The service was fantastic. We ordered our food and it took 7 min to get all the above food.

Yelp
Dickie Brennan & Company The Commissary is a market, kitchen and bar. Dickie Brennan's The Commissary is located in New Orleans Lower Garden District neighborhood and their market carries appetizers, soups, dips, butcher meats, desserts and family meals. The kitchen has salads, sandwiches, shared plates and sides. The bar has seasonal cocktails, wine and beer. So far I've only eaten the kitchen's burger, brussels sprouts and chocolate chip cookie which were good. If you are looking for fun places to eat and drink in New Orleans Dickie Brennan's The Commissary is an interesting spot to explore along with being right next to the locally brewed sake at their neighbor The Wetlands Sake brewery. Overall this a great spot to grab a meal then do some shopping for your future meals you will prepare at home along with enjoying some drinks here and next door at the sake brewery. My video review of Dickie Brennan & Company The Commissary is here: https://youtu.be/lLIlmx_Dnv0

Yelp
I HOPE DICKIE BRENNAN DOESN'T MESS UP PASCAL'S LIKE THIS A. Food: 1) Well, the $4 salad was a good price value. 2) but the duck poppers were very dry - the jalapeño cream cheese filling shriveled up, and they're very pricey at $14 for 5 poppers. 3) The $10.50 Smash Burger was the real disappointment, sere with maybe a dollop of sauce (see pic). BEEF QUALITY CAVEAT: They didn't ask me how I wanted my meat cooked which is usually a sign that a restaurant doesn't have confidence in the quality of their "rare" meat. B. Atmosphere: pretty delightful. The inside is large and squeaky clean. There is also a great outdoor area. TIPPING CAVEAT: this is one of those irritating counter-serve restaurants with auto-tipping options of only 25%/20%/18% - kinda disrespectful to wait staff at full service restaurants where tipping customarily begins at only 15%. I wonder how the harried DB's Palace or Steakhouse servers feel about this...

Yelp
The Commissary and Wetlands Sake compliment each other perfectly! Brennan's iconic food with the best sake in the world... what's not to love?!? Admittedly, it was the sake next door that drew me in, but The Commissary made it that much more attractive. Since we arrived just a few minutes before closing time, we limited ourselves to appetizers, but not just any appetizer. On the advice of our sake server, we went with the duck poppers. These things blew us away!!! Perfect little pieces of duck, wrapped in bacon with a hoisin pepper sauce. WOW! Can't wait to go back for a full meal and possibly a cocktail from their full bar, but with Wetlands next door, the bar part may have to wait.

Yelp
The Commissary is a unique place which houses a bar, local market, and dining where you have views into the kitchen. Visited on a day where it was cold out and not really packed. They have a nice patio which connected to that shared with another business. Upon arrival there was someone who greeted me, instructed me to Grab a menu and order and feel free to seat myself. An very small happy hour menu is offered - worth trying if your interested in experience drinks at a reduced price. Now the food. The everyrhing wings - let's just say chefs kiss. Flavorful and arrived hot. Portion size great for an appetizer. I'll def be back for more. I had a Turkey sandwich with a cream cheese spread. I opted for the cream cheese on the side - my mistake. I could have had it placed directly in my sandwich, it was amazing. The gentleman who served me were very pleasant and overall I felt welcomed. I'm looking forward to attending again for brunch to experience the rest of what the menu has to offer.

Yelp
Where do I start.... I am still sitting here just going "Oh my"....the first indication that this was going to be a wonderful experience is when my Uber Eats driver commented about how good it smelled. It smelled good and tasted even better. The fried Des Allemand's catfish melted in my mouth, the shrimp were so light and fluffy. The black bean and corn salad had me wanting a larger portion. The Mirliton slaw made me want to never eat coleslaw again. Only Mirliton slaw should exist. The cornbread tasted like sweet honey. You have got to try this one.

Yelp
Definitely the place for your next catering order. Many happy people at our event because of the great food. The service is lovely, and the staff easy and accommodating.
google avatar

Yelp
Very pleased with this understated little place next to Wetlands Sake! They appear to work in conjunction with each other even though they are separate entities. We were enjoying some sake and playing trivia, and my friend placed an order here, and they brought it to our table next door! We had the truffle fries (the perfect bar food), a cheese plate, and bacon-wrapped duck bites. The cheese plate was generous and the cheese was high quality. The duck bites were delicious, but the sauce that came with it was out of this world!! It was vinegary and spicy and acidic- we dipped everything on the table in it. Definitely can't wait to return and try more foods!

Yelp
Dickie has done it again. Hidden in the edges of the Irish Channel is The Commissary, a kitchen of gourmet food to-go and great small plate dishes for eating on site. The Cuban sandwich here is superb, one of the best I have ever eaten. Doesnt hurt to have great sake to wash it down with next-door.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great lunch spot had a salad and turkey sandwich it was delicious. I would recommend this spot if your in the area

Yelp
I've been wanting to go to the Commissary basically since they opened. I finally made it this past Sunday. They have a cute patio, some covered porch seating and indoor seating! While we did have lunch, I really wanted to go to look at their specialty food selections and prepackaged food options. We split the shrimp salad sandwich and fries and both were delicious (especially the roll that the sandwich was on)! They have all kinds of things in their "grocery" section, including fresh meat and seafood. We got the pimento cheese, smoked fish dip, a frozen veggie lasagna and a bottle of wine! I love having this an option close to my house!! And during the holidays they do sell pre-made Bourbon Milk punch!!

Yelp
[Note: This review applies to Yelpers with availability of an oven, not just a microwave.] I love The Commissary. I love that it is a prep kitchen supporting several of Brennen's restaurants ... not a Ghost kitchen (a remote space/kitchen rented by a restaurant to handle delivery and takeout orders). The Commissary preps the onions, carrots, green peppers, peals shrimp, readies the Gumbo, all the multitude of prep items, saving the restaurants time, and space in their limited kitchens. A by-product of this operation is that remaining products not sent to the restaurants is cooked up on site, and available as fresh or frozen prepared dishes ... restaurant quality dishes ... in The Commissary's small market. At a very affordable price. There is also a full bar, a lunch counter, and in- and out-side seating available. It is the prepared meals I am addressing ... I have not had the pleasure of dining onsite, that will have to wait until my next trip. I have tried this week the Vegetarian Lasagna, the Meat Lasagna, Chacon Enchiladas, Eggplant Parmesan, Cauliflower Soup, and the English Muffins. [Do not miss the English Muffins. Ask for them!] This is a short list of what delights are available, and I am sure they will change according to the season (I cannot wait for Crawdad season (February through May)). All dishes included clear cooking or heating instructions, and an ingredient list. I felt that these dishes elevated ... really elevated ... our dining in at home this trip, with a variety of restaurant quality dishes, and at much a more affordable price. The Commissary prepared dishes - Five Stars.

Yelp
My first visit. Coworker has used them for years for Thanksgiving dinner pre-order and pick up (either fully cooked or partially to finish at home). There are cold case items from soups, stocks and dips to heat-and-eat pan meals, sides, and sliders (read: game day). Also desserts and ice cream. Took home key lime pie and honey cardamon cruchies ice cream. Definitely quality-controlled processing and housemade from Brennan's. Excellent and worth the money. Had a kale salad with housemade ceasar. It was filling and satisfying. The greens were hearty and tasted like they came from a farm and not a cellophane bag. I was impressed and will return. There's outside seating, fully stocked bar, and it's family friendly. Kate took great care of me, so expect courteous service.

Yelp
I was flying solo for lunch so I sat at the grill bar, was able to engage with the Sous chief of the grill. I enjoyed RootBeer, fried Brussel sprouts, Cuban, & fries! SO GOOD. The pulled pork and Tasso on the Cuban were super juicy. It's a really good Cajun take!! Loved the green goddess dipping sauce with the Brussel sprouts. Mr. Dickie Brennan even was passing through, I was able to enjoy a nice conversation and get a pic with him. I'm quite selective on my restaurants to return to when traveling (cause there's so much food to try and so little time), but The Commissary is now on the top of that list for NOLA.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
The Pimento Cheese Dip is out of this world tasty - friendly efficient counter service. It's a dreamy place to visit in NOLA

Yelp
I/we see you the commissary. My adult son and I have order in dates every 2-3 weeks and this evening we had the pleasure to order y'all!! I think we're snobby but hot shit did we have so much to talk about today and tonight!! Dang do y'all put those extra steps in to make every bite a reason to smile, make your kiddo hang out and something to talk about it

Terry C.

Yelp
Phenomenal. A local took me here and it is the best food I've had in Nola to-date. I heard it's a test / prep kitchen for Brennans. Cobb salad and grilled shrimp were on point. I loved the smoked fish dip with handmade crackers and radishes. Everything tasted fresh. Would come back.

Kelli B.

Yelp
Okay, this place legitimately saved my life...okay, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's hella good. Had a few drinks at Urban South Brewery, and boy did the heat get to me. We came here for something besides a smash burger, and dayum do I recommend it. The pimento cheese dip was amazing--don't sleep on those saltines, gurl. The shrimp salad roll was on bread that I will dream about when I go home, and the Creole Cuban was one of the top sandwiches my man friend has ever had (and he knows his way around a sandwich). Service was great, and it's a nice little joint. Definitely stop in!
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
We had a quick lunch at the Commissary today. I had the Ceasar Salad and is was great. Quality ingredients and very tasty. It is a commissary in the truest sense of the word. No table service, but everyone was very friendly. Thera is a cool little section with unique food items. I recommend it!

Yelp
Eatery and market located on Orange street in the lower garden district. I arrived around noon on a Saturday and to my surprise they're weren't many people there. It has a commercial/industrial kitchen vibe. As soon as you walk in everything is very clean, neat and organized. Everyone is wearing masks. The staff was very nice and polite. They sell many refrigerated prepared food items that you can buy to take home. They also have pies, meal kits, meats, soups, dressings, spices. They have a few tables outside and inside if you want to get something from the eatery and dine in. I ordered the smash patty burger. It was such a good burger! Its two 3 oz. house ground chuck patties, American cheese, mayo, house pickles, on a potato bun. It comes with a side a fries (which is not stated on menu) I ordered the Brussels sprouts and Mac and cheese on the side because I'm a sucker for both of them! I couldn't leave not knowing how they tasted. I'm glad i did because they were delicious!! Only downfall if they don't have many options for drinks. They had one type of bottled tea, coke, and sparkling water. The commissary is a must try!
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
So good! Cute little spot next door to Wetlands Sake Brewery- both are great and share a really nice outdoor patio. The drinks are good here if you want something other than sake and I really enjoyed the food too! The wings were perfectly flavorful and the fries were sooo crispy. They also sell deli meats and cheese, bread, ice cream, and more! Definitely worth checking out. I'll be back on Wednesday for trivia night :)

Yelp
We attended an event at the convention center and came across this gem. The food is fresh and absolutely amazing! My taste buds want more but my tummy cannot handle it . Make your way here ASAP!

Yelp
The Commissary got a unique start. Managed by Geordie Brower, Sarah Brennan, Richard Brennan III and Matthew Pettus, the space opened in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, at the end of April. The original plan was to open as a market and dining space where the public could enjoy Dickie Brennan and Co. signature dishes easily. That plan was temporarily put on hold so that The Commissary could offer free family meals to front-line workers and to those out of work and in need. New Orleans is currently in phase 2; eating at restaurants is allowed, but with capacity restrictions. Your best bet is to get Dickie Brennan and Co,'s delectable dishes to-go. The Commissary is offering a daily lunch menu for dine-in or takeout, as well as an array of prepared Dickie Brennan and Co. classics that can be easily reheated and served at home. The eatery menu includes such selections as Green Goddess Salad ($13), Gator on a Stick ($11), Smash Patty Burger ($10), Smoked Catfish Dip ($7) and Pimento Cheese with crackers ($7). One of the things that I'm most excited about is the market menu. Turtle soup and gumbo are both available by the pint ($7) or quart ($13). If you have ever had the family's famous turtle soup or gumbo, you know how special it is to have this on hand for a special occasion or just a quick warm-up dinner. For my visit, I ordered the Creole Cuban sandwich, mac and cheese and fried Brussels sprouts. Creole Cuban Sandwich ($12)- The menu describes this as tasso, pork debris, mayo, creole mustard, house pickles, bolilo, but I would just describe it as amazingly good! This isn't what I would call a "classic" Cuban, but I love the flakey bread and the generous pork- tender, soft and well marinated. The sandwich itself is very soft, but sturdy, and doesn't fall apart with each bite. Of course, it was perfectly pressed and it came with kettle chips, which were a nice crunchy addition. Mac and Cheese ($5)- I'm a huge mac and cheese person and I like to try the concoction whenever it's offered. The Commissary's version is made with penne noodles and thick, rich cheese sauce. It has that fantastic "gooey" texture that you expect from really good mac and cheese. Because it's a cheese sauce, every noodle is perfectly coated inside and out, making for a decadent experience that you are going to want to share. Fried Brussels Sprouts ($4) - If you aren't usually a sprouts fan, I'd encourage you to give these a try. They're lightly fried in a Crystal honey sauce and they are full of flavor with just enough spice. The outside leaves have that nice fried "crisp" to them, which makes for a solid bite, while the inside is still tender. Decadent Dickie Brennan and Co. food available to-go is a real dream come true. If you do decide to dine in, The Commissary is taking full safety precautions and has spaced out seating inside and outside of the restaurant, and all of those working were masked. *Portions of this review was originally written, by me, for Very Local New Orleans. Yelp
Saw that this place was new to the neighborhood and thought I would give it a try. Wow! It is so good yeah! Huge outdoor seating, live music, and affordable delicious brunch. I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Second time we have eaten there. I would say the smashed burger is absolutely phenomenal!! I mean to say yummy. We normally sit at the bar where the barkeep is a wonderfully engaging woman. Can't wait for slightly cooler weather to sit on patio. It is a limited menu but it is all good !

Yelp
Good gravy, this was dankalicious. The chicken was so good - smokey with a sweet touch. Macaroni that takes me back to grandma's house... and the fried brussels... god, the fried brussels. This place is like a hidden gem. I'm obsessed

Yelp
I live in the lower garden district and was excited to try this place I found via Yelp. Stopped in for a late lunch during the week. The eatery is set up in a large store area with plenty of space between tables. They have an outdoor patio and a private parking lot out front. You order at a counter for your meal and they bring it to your table. The food was quickly prepared (but it wasn't very busy the time of day I went). Staff were friendly and attentive. I got the creole Cuban and I enjoyed the Dickie Brennan's take on it. My sandwich and fries were delicious. Bathrooms were gender neutral with individual toilet stalls and a common sink area. The food was delicious 4.5+ stars, but next time I go I will probably get it to go. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and am excited to try some of their prepared meals next time.

Yelp
So...I have had the Duck Poppers (one of my favs on the menu) on 3 occasions. On 2 of these occasions there was no jalapeno inside, just duck wrapped in well-rendered bacon served with pepper jelly. It was decadent and delicious! Today, the 3rd occasion, there had to be a recipe change or the original chef came back from vacation. What I had today was an undercooked jalapeno stuffed with way too much low quality cream cheese, with a tiny piece of duck wrapped in a thick, not well cooked slice of bacon (much of it went to waste as undercooked bacon fat is disgusting in my opinion). A completely different experience, more like something you might find on an Applebee's or Chili's menu and certainly not worth the price. What's more unfortunate is because I thought I was ordering the previous, delicious version, I ordered two!
google avatar

ChristopherJames G.

Yelp
Parked nearby and walked to a table outside. No one ever showed up, so went inside. Found someone who said I had to order inside and take my number outside. Ordered and paid, but apparently was supposed to get my drinks inside. After much confusion, finally got drinks. We got the Cuban sandwich and the burger. Both were horrible. Can't believe Dickie Brennan puts his name in this.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Basil lemonade, fried Brussels sprouts and kale cesar with shrimp. Was so yummy and our dog-o loved the outdoor space. Staff gave him treats and service was great. Check'em out!
google avatar

Nina M.

Yelp
Great, unique food... went for lunch. It is pricey for a "order at the bar" kind of place, but the service and friendly vibe is exceptional. They had some great "take home and heat up" options but would like to see more variety. Great place to sit outdoors. Will come back in the evening for the sake bar....

Yelp
Y'all!! Let's first start with the 5 star customer service. I chose to go with a Brennan's restaurant for Father's Day take out dinner and The Commissary definitely delivered the best options. For $165 (including tax and services fees) we were able to enjoy two 20oz ribeyes, 1 8oz filet mignon wrapped in bacon, creamed spinach, 4 halves of twice baked potatoes, 4 stuffed jalapeños wrapped in prosciutto, and 4 halves of stuffed tomatoes. You just can't beat that!! Fine dining provided at home! This fed three adults and a toddler. Everything was packaged safely and they were observing social distancing rules upon arrival. I felt totally safe picking up my food. I had to return a second time because some of the food from my order was left out and they comped me not one not two but THREE free pints of home made ice cream!! The only caveat was we had to warm the food and grill the steaks at home but it made for a nice family activity and we were quite proud of ourselves with the finished products. If you're in the Garden district are don't hesitate to give them a try and pick up some take out.

Yelp
Read about the commissary in yesterday's lagniappe section so after lunch I searched out this place to get something for my husband's dinner. The inside was dark and unwelcoming. Not too much in the prepared area but I saw some turtle soup. My husband likes turtle soup so I purchased a $24 container. Got home and went to heat up. It was loaded with smoked sausage and did not taste at all like turtle soup, it didn't even pass as good gumbo. Can't believe Dickie Brennan would try to fool natives!! Won't go back here!

Yelp
Awesome crew prepared a fabulous meal for my Friday Family Fun night. Picked up the Coolinary whole rotisserie chicken dinner for 4 and a charcuterie board kit. Over the top! So fresh and delicious! The chicken was cooked to perfection, Brussel sprouts, potato salad and tomato cucumber salad were amazing. The rosemary ice cream, included, was a palate pleaser. Loved the charcuterie board too. Lovely selection of meats, cheese and the accompaniments. Enjoyed by all. Can't wait to place my next order.

Yelp
I recently had the BBQ shrimp dinner kit and it was fantastic! Everything you needed was included. The instructions were clear and easy. Starting with delicious lemon-honey vinaigrette for the salad (included) followed by the delicious shrimp in a savory, smooth sauce and finishing with a scrumptious brownie and amazing caramel and brownie but ice cream -the meal was delicious! I look forward to trying more things from The Commissary!

Yelp
Happen to pass by while driving around today and came upon The Commissary. Got the BLT and Chicken salad sandwiches to go as well as andouille and tasso for future cooking. The sandwiches were absolutely fantastic! Wonderful customer service with a smile. Hunt this place out and EAT THERE!!!!
