19 Black-Owned Coffee Shops In Chicago

"The Common Cup has been a Rogers Park staple since 2007, but switched ownership in 2019 to Black-owned non-profit, Entrenuity, which aims to provide employment opportunities and training for women and the BIPOC community. They have a few tables and a small outdoor patio, but it’s also great if you’re looking to grab some coffee and pastries before catching the Red Line at Morse." - john ringor

Google
Cozy coffee shop serving their own blend of metric beans. This spot has some great third space vibes, menu is small, but what we got was pretty good. Staff were friendly and service was quick. There's also a second room with lots of extra seating and a few tables outside as well.

Cute cafe i had a delicious pumpkin bread and nice matcha latte. Friendly staff and comfy welcoming interior.

Google
Wonderful experience at this hidden gem! Friendly staff, diverse crowd, and delicious coffee! Everything was neat and orderly. The staff was friendly efficient yet quick to keep the busy line of Monday morning patrons moving. Everything is Sparkling down to the cleanliness of the bathrooms. I will definitely visit this hip coffee shop again!!! Oh and the sandwich’s are made to order. Definitely worth the wait!

Google
I’m always looking for a great croissant today. I had almond tomorrow. I’ll try the butter. I’m sure they do other drinks very well. My favorite is a large drip with two shots of espresso. Was that you can tell if the coffee is good and the coffee here is excellent.

King Bottom

Google
This is my favorite place to get a GOOD hot mocca with oatmeal milk. They also have great sandwiches and this pumpkin chocolate chip loaf that’s everything. Give you a favor and stop by this cafe, you’ll love it

Google
Everything here was amazing. I ordered their honey lavender latte, which I have tried at other locations before, and it was perfect here. The bacon and egg breakfast sandwich was delicious. Would highly recommend as it is a small black-owned business! A lot better than Starbucks I would say.

Google
Decided to take a walk on over as my roommate mentioned this is a good place. Really nice coffee, delicious chocolate pumpkin bread, fun staff. The vibe is small and cozy. Plenty to read, which adds nicely to the atmosphere. Overall very much a community cornerstone and I’ll be sure to return!

Google
Have had the bacon & cheddar and the Rapscallion quiche (recommend this one, the feta brings out tons of flavor). Iced and hot lattes were both super flavorful. Price is a little high but not unexpected for the area. Quick service turn around when there isn’t a line.

Yelp
The staff was incredibly kind! I'm an anxious person who can never remember coffee terms and they were really accommodating and patient! The decorations and community posters /advertising made me happy to see! There's a wide variety of seating and a decent amount of space to manner ! The bathroom is single person and large for those who need more space! Very good vibes!

Yelp
The atmosphere is nice, the staff is friendly and the coffee is excellent. I stop in every time I'm in Rogers Park.

Yelp
i've only gotten a slice of their breads/loafs- lemon blueberry, lemon poppyseed, pumpkin, etc.... hits the spot every time. i walk in, i stand at the register, i receive a warm, bubbly greeting from whoever is working the register, i ask for a slice of bread/loaf ($5/slice), i take it to go, and i call it a day. life at it's finest.

Yelp
I love The common cup! They have great drinks, I especially love their chai, but they also have great food with a pretty large variety. They also have plenty of seating so I enjoy coming here to do some homework. The ambiance is also great, it's relaxed enough that I am able to be very productive while doing work, but it's also lively enough. They also are always playing great music :)

Yelp
This is my go to spot. I love them. I'm actually about to go and grab my coffee now! I'm a regular and I always feel welcomed when I enter the space. It's a lovely vibe inside and enough seating to relax if needed. The staff is always so nice, the service is efficient, and the cranberry orange muffins are the best. You can't go wrong with CC!

Yelp
This is our favorite local coffee shop since moving. We go here frequently and the great service is consistently awesome! The staff are very friendly, as a neighborhood coffee shop they try to remember you, and also very pet friendly. It's cool to see everyone vibe in here! The ambiance of the shop is relaxing, they have a printer in the back, and more space too. Also, prices are great too. Very leveled compared to franchise coffee shops. We also always order croissants. Ordered the chocolate one today but they have almond and also a butter croissant as well. The best part? They sell day old pastries and they taste as good as the fresh ones! If there's a day old croissant we buy them instantly!

Yelp
Beautiful baked goods coming out of this cafe. Banana Walnut Bundt cakes. Orange chocolate chip Bundt cakes. Pair it with top shelf Metric coffee and boom, you're living the good life.

Munsanje M.

Yelp
Every time I stop in the service is phenomenal! I always order an iced hazelnut latte with oatmilk and it's so silky & smooth, one of my favorite places to get lattes! The shop is small and cute and even has a few tables if you wanted to stay and work or study.

Yelp
First time here!! The customer service is great the employees all have great energy and the atmosphere is chill. The food and coffee was all on point. I had a a flat white and broccoli cheddar quiche. Definitely check this place out and support a local business if your in the area and need that coffee fix.

Jack K.

Yelp
Fast service, good music, and the drip coffee is unique and great! 100% worth the couple extra steps past Dunkin for a much better coffee.

Yelp
First I'll say that I love that Rogers Park has a coffee shop in the neighborhood. I think it's great for the community to get together over a cup of Joe and a great space to get work done. I came in for a cup of drip coffee and to meet a friend. However, over 4 bucks for a small cup of drip is insane. And they you charge half price (2 bucks) on refills is ridiculous. I think it's a bit unreasonable. I'm all about supporting local business but you have to make it fair for customers.
google avatar

Alice M.

Yelp
A good place to hang out, but disappointed by the food which is rubbery from the microwave.
google avatar

Paul J.

Yelp
Early morning in Rogers Park, and I needed a hot cup o' Joe so I stopped into The Common Cup to get my fill. Dark, earthy goodness in a cup. And I got a blueberry muffin as it came out of the oven. Holy cow, there was steam rising from the inside and it was the tastiest blueberry muffin I ever had! A steady stream of locals stopped in to pay their respects and I got a sense of the neighborhood. What a nice little find, definitely coming back whenever I find myself in Rogers Park again.
google avatar

Maura G.

Yelp
Cute neighborhood coffee shop. The customer service was great. Had the Rise and Shine Quiche and the Lemon Blueberry Bread and both were 10/10!
google avatar

Brydie G.

Yelp
Tasty coffee and muffins and even better customer service. The people that work at this place are delightful. It always seems to be bustling with business. A great neighborhood coffee shop with a 'family feel'. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I don't like leaving 3 star reviews especially since the staff has been so kind, warm, and helpful. The store itself is very cute and comfy. The only reason why this place gets three stars for me is because I didn't enjoy the food. (Granted I've only had the iced coffee and muffin). Iced coffee was too sweet and tasted artificial. I was given a straw that kept breaking into a million pieces (I had to get three new straws because the straw kept cracking which was so weird). I had to water down the coffee twice for it to taste ok, but I just came to the conclusion that it just wasn't for me and tossed it in the end. Muffin was so-so. Wish it was a bit warmer and softer. They do have a lot of regulars though, that means they're making other people happy. I think you should still give it a shot if you're thinking about coming by. Next time I'll try something else on the menu that might change my opinion.

Lorenzo B.

Yelp
Great coffee and service. Really enjoyed the experience. Would highly reccomend giving it a shot :)
google avatar

Aaron Lee J.

Yelp
Great coffeehouse. Very warm in the winter. Outdoor dining in the summer. I love the day old muffins and breads for $1.91. 2 bathrooms which is unusal for a coffee shop. Owners great and cares about the customers!
google avatar

Grace W.

Yelp
Love to support neighborhood coffee shops, so I was really excited when I saw this place was open again! I got their speciality latte, the Almond Burr, and it was really cool, has a nice amaretto flavor and a good bit of cinnamon. Coffee was made really quickly and the baristas were super friendly! Wish there wasn't a non-dairy milk upcharge...but so many coffee shops in Chicago have that so it's hard to knock them for that. I'll definitely be back since they're right around the corner from me!

Yelp
This is a fantastic coffee shop. The crew is outstanding and the coffee is great. I buy my beans here. The food is honest and good. Customer focused and unpretentious; a true neighborhood jewel. Always a good hang.
google avatar

Yelp
A great Rogers Park institution. Friendly staff, not at all pretentious, pleaser ambience.

Jordan B.

Yelp
Good Coffee, Good Quiche, Good Vibes, Nice People! There is a fair amount of seating, and the wifi is fast enough to get work done.

Yelp
For those who work from home, you know how important it is to have strong internet connections. When my service went down for 48 hours, I was in need for a quiet and inviting place to work out of. The Common Cup was that place! The server was super friendly and inviting the moment I entered. I never worked out of a cafe and I got the full experience. I ordered the spinach and egg white quiche. It was nice and flakey! I also went with the slow brewed hibiscus plum tea. It was super flavourful and divine. I may have to pay this Black Owned Cafe another visit!
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
This place is so welcoming has really good energy. I ordered the Honey Lavender Latte and it was exceptionally good. Like, I savored every sip.

Lyle L.

Yelp
I've always had great experiences here. I've consistently gotten high quality drinks that are prepared with care. The staff has always been very pleasant and accommodating. A lovely spot to take your time and enjoy your drink.
google avatar

Hailey D.

Yelp
Such a cute place! A quiet vibe and the staff is super nice. I got a black coffee and a chocolate croissant. Also tried the cranberry orange muffin and it was fruity, tart, and wonderful!
google avatar

Lauren P.

Yelp
Quaint, comfy neighborhood coffee shop with great coffee, snacks and contributes to charity. What more could you want?
google avatar

Conner C.

Yelp
I've been to this place quite a decent amount in my couple years in the Rogers Park area, and I've never had a bad time. The coffee is always great, the people are always friendly, and it's always very clean. I'm really surprised by some negative reviews, but I assume you can't please everyone. If you're looking for a nice cup of coffee please go here. It's a wonderful joint.
google avatar

Cally R.

Yelp
Love this place and so glad they are open again. They're drip coffee is always fresh and they make a great vanilla latte! The vibe is alway welcoming. I'm a fan! I wish they were open later- but that's my only complaint
google avatar

Maya R.

Yelp
This shop is one of a kind. The coffee is great (Metric is one of my fave local Chicago roasters), prices are super reasonable, the loaves and pastries they make in-house are always FANTASTIC, and the atmosphere is really warm and community-centered. Baristas are also very down-to-earth and helpful! My favorites are the girl with black hair who wears a rainbow mask sometimes and the other girl (might be a manager) with blonde hair and blue tips. I wish I knew their names. Whenever I chat with either of them I feel like they're engaged, present, and actually talking to me, vs the usual dull monotonous exchanging of pleasantries in most places. I think that human element is what keeps people coming back to a cafe more than any handsomely brewed drip (though an 8oz paired with a piece of that banana chocolate chip loaf leaves me deeply questioning). I just moved into the neighborhood last month and very much plan to frequent here.

Nicholas F.

Yelp
Rad lil cafe with a cozy feel. They serve metric coffee too which is a plus, they offer a good amount of food as well, and the service is great.
google avatar

Renee B.

Yelp
Nice inviting atmosphere, friendly staff. We enjoyed an oat milk late and miel. We also had the spinach quiche and Canadian bacon quiche and both were delicious.

julie m.

Yelp
Terrific coffee, amazing muffins, welcoming staff, comfortable environment. A great neighborhood cafe.

Yelp
Seinfeldians: Heed these Words of Wisdom from Brother Jerry....."We want to do a lot of stuff; we're not in great shape. We didn't get a good night's sleep. We're a little depressed. Coffee solves all these problems in one delightful little cup". Common Cup is a good place to find that "little cup." It's a homey neighborhood cafe with serious coffee. I wish they had a place like this in my neighborhood. They do it simply and well. Minimalist decor. Friendly staff and patrons. Located near the Red Line stop at Morse in Rogers Park.

Genevieve K.

Yelp
Really cute local spot for coffee, tea, and some baked goods. Went with a friend, and the staff were so sweet and welcoming. Sat on the patio, and it was lovely. They also had a lot of room inside for studying/getting some work done quietly.
google avatar

Yelp
Commoncup is my favorite local café. Everybody always has a smile on their face. Their lattes, quiches and sandwiches are to die for. I love the new lunch menu as well

M H.

Yelp
Had delicious quiche & coffee here and Trey was the friendliest guy with a big heart for doggie visitors.
google avatar

Maya G.

Yelp
Just tried this place for the first time recently. It was perfectly located of the red-line Morse stop so getting there after the snow storm was easy. I ordered a latte and it came in a cute glass mug. My only complaint was that it was mostly steamed milk so it felt like it wasn't quite filled up. Still delicious! It was a great ambience inside to get work done and there was very pretty art on the walls. I will be back soon!

Madalyn S.

Yelp
I love this place! The classic breakfast sandwich is a wonderful way to start the morning.

Lauren V.

Yelp
I cant express how amazing this place is. The baristas are so sweet, literal angels. Great layout and ambiance. I came yesterday and it was so good I can back today. Best coffee I think I've ever had, no joke. Please go check them out!!!!!
google avatar

Kelsey M.

Yelp
This place has DELICIOUS gluten free and vegan baked goods. As well as fabulous drip coffee and everything else on the menu. The flavors are rich and the quality of product is obvious. There's variety here to satisfy any time of day. Location is super accessible, too! I never have a bad experience with the employees here, either. They're friendly and eager to help. I really appreciate the environment The Common Cup creates. It's a dynamic, artful space that can be used for a solo escape or a group setting. Playlist is lit today too, fam.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid little hipster coffee shop on the corner of Greenview & Morse. Good coffee, served by folks who aren't totally unfriendly, and a useful spot to settle in and work or read for awhile. There's a small bookshelf in fact tucked away in one corner of the shop along with a couple comfy chairs, and a larger open space next to the smaller bar side of the shop. Outlets to plug in near the tables if you need. A few handmade crafty things for sale, too.
google avatar

Janice W.

Yelp
I had a cappuccino and a scone and both were yummy. The foam was nice and dense and the espresso tasted chocolaty. The scone was very good. Just a bit crumbly which is good. I like to toast them in the oven and eat them with butter.
google avatar

Victoria K.

Yelp
Solid coffee shop with delicious pastries and savory bites. There is also great seating around the shop where you can get work done or just catch up with friends. The service is also very friendly! Ordered a latte, coconut chia pudding, and a maple apple pastry. The latte was standard, nothing special here. The foam was on the more bubbly side than thick and luxurious. The latte did its job though. The Coconut Chia Pudding was not overly sweet and the Coconut taste was wonderful! The texture was smooth with some shreds of coconut and the chia seeds. They also have it in Chocolate and Banana. The Apple Maple Pastry was also very delicious. It was like an apple turnover, but better. Paired with the latte, it was the perfect combination. Give this place a shot!

Yelp
First time going today and loved everything about it. Great atmosphere with very friendly, personable staff. Retail items by local artists. Delicious Vegan and gluten free options and huge space. Can't believe I have never been here before!! My favorite thing probably would be how genuinely kind the owners were to every customer that came in :)
google avatar

Zara M.

Yelp
Candied yam latte?? YES it's the perfect fall drink! Not overly sweet but just full of flavor. Really cozy coffeeshop with a fun atmosphere. It seems like the perfect spot to grab a drink, some yummy pastries and read a book/do some work for a few hours post-COVID. Current COVID protocols include limiting the number of customers inside at a time, closed indoor seating, masks mandatory, hand sanitizer at the counter, etc. Can't wait to come back to this black-owned business to try more!

T C.

Yelp
Nice coffee, great croissants and sandwiches at reasonable prices, and friendly staff!

Christina H.

Yelp
Please don't let the negative reviews deter you - they are from people who don't appreciate craft coffee and prefer Starbucks or Dunkin. Or they were referring to previous management. The current management is fantastic - my drink was carefully crafted. They serve metric! I believe the owner's wife makes all the pastries in house and the savory quiche I had was delicious. They currently have peach dumplings I'm dying to try. Common Cup is also black-owned and puts local artists on display. Love everything about this shop (including their patio during covid to work!!) and am looking forward to going back.
