Best Restaurants on South Congress in Austin | Eater Austin

"Open since 1955, the Continental Club hosts live music nightly on the stage that Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Replacements, and Robert Plant have all played on. The no-frills dive bar is the perfect spot to grab a cheap beer and reminisce about how Austin used to be. Check the schedule, as shows may be sold out and usually require a cover or ticket to enter." - Darcie Duttweiler

The 20 Best LA Bars & Restaurants With Live Music - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"This swanky DTLA cocktail bar is truly underground: you’ll find the entrance through a dark staircase in an alley. But once you’re inside, it’ll feel like a big nightclub. Stop by on Thursday nights for live jazz performed by local musicians. It never gets too crowded and we’re always blown away by the raw talent on stage, so remember this spot for a last-minute date. There’s never a cover charge to get in on jazz nights, but drinks typically cost around $20." - brant cox, sylvio martins

The Continental Club - Review - Downtown LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"This swanky DTLA cocktail bar is truly underground: you’ll find the entrance through a dark staircase in an alley. But once you’re inside, it’ll feel like one big nightclub. Every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night, the basement bar fills up with people who just want to chant lyrics to the latest Burna Boy record. Doors open at 10pm, but these crowded dance parties keep jumping until 2am most nights. If you’re looking for a more low-key night of two-stepping with a date, drop by on Thursday for live jazz performed by local musicians. There’s usually no cover to get in, but  drinks here typically cost around $20." - Nikko Duren

Cool basement bar in downtown. Stylish interior with a good amount of seating. I went in for their Thursday night live jazz. It was a chill atmosphere. The band was good. The jazz starts around 8. Great to have a place like this keeping jazz alive in LA. Drinks are a little pricey but there's no cover so I think that's fair. Would definitely go again. Service was good. Friendly staff. There's street parking but it's probably easier to get one of the pay lots within a block or two.

Went for jazz night had a couple of drinks. The service was fine. They had a trio playing, and the space is nice, although it was better when it originally opened.

Finally made it for R&B night (Saturday). Cute spot. Love the red lighting & vibe. The bartenders were cool. The beer selection is lacking but there's a decent cocktail menu. The bathrooms were clean. We found a $12 parking garage not too far. Definitely worth checking out. I would go back

I was walking around town and saw the security standings outside, under a pizza sign, asked them whats going on, turns out its this cool underground joint with amazing bartenders, and different nights play different types of music, but if you like jazz Thursday nights are your night. Larry was the phenomenal behind the bar, you could see the passion each time he was making a drink, and old fashioned is a must at this place, specially when Larry makes it. Also if you have sweet tooth, there are delicious complimentary mini cupcakes there for your enjoyment. And they are absolutely delicious. If you are in town check oit this place, you won't be disappointed.

Google
I like the vibe but the Dj was trash, I came around 4/20 .. the djs suck kept stoping the music, playing the same songs not playing anything new. Or any good older hits, and transition were non existent. they might as well have let us put in request.

Google
Drinks were alright, a little pricey. Had to pay cover for Saturday night, no wait. It was crowded, we didn't like the music or the vibe.

Google
Beautiful speak-easy-like lounge with funky lit interiors. Lush feels all around this classy place. Their bar is fully stocked and they carry special house cocktails. Two large tables can be reserved for a private party, seating about 8 at each table. There’s a private room in the back, decorated with Shepard Fairey artwork. Nice space for a small band to play live music, and for a DJ to set up a booth. Often this place is used for private events. No technical dress code, but the loungey atmosphere beckons you to dress well. Find street parking out front, entrance is down an alleyway.

Google
For my first time here, I had a great time with my family and friends. Celebrated my birthday there. The drinks were good especially the old fashioned and the paloma. The music was also on point so my friends enjoyed themselves too.

Yelp
We've been wanting to check this place out and my friends live in the same building so we decided to check out some live music. On Thursdays they open at 7pm, we made reservations online but if you get there right when it opens, you should be able to walk in. We had a few drinks - there was only 1 bartender since it wasn't super busy but it still took a good 15 minutes of waiting before we were able to order. The music was great, the ambiance was cozy and dark. Both the security outside and the bartender was friendly. It's a great bar in the middle of downtown. To get here you can take the metro in - exit historic broadway. There are some street parking if you are open to driving around and a few $10 parking lots in the area.

Yelp
You"ll enter through alluring door. Into a narrow space you'll walk into a luxurious space. Drinks quickly made and hydration station accessible. Neat upbeat people.

Yelp
This was the most fun I had in a while! On Saturday, they played 90s music. I love how it was a mix of reggae, hip-hop, Spice Girls, and a bunch of other music. I really enjoyed this place because the service was amazing! If you got a sparkling water you got free refills! The best part was the variety of people that were at the club! I look forward to going back!

Crystal G.

Yelp
This place was very weak tried to give it a second chance. Bartender was super rude and ruined the entire chance that we were willing to give this place. The music was average the vibe was giving like a middle school dance. Empty and lame.
google avatar

Nelly N.

Yelp
I've been here before several times in the past and recently went again last night. The music was all old-school hip-hop and while a few songs here and there were good enough to make you bob your head a bit, the rest were way too slow and no one was on the floor dancing. If I'm coming to a club, I definitely want to hear music that makes me want to dance. No cover to get in. Staff all seemed courteous, with the exception of the two doormen letting people in. Drinks are typical LA price, $18 for a mixed drink, $12 for a beer. I don't know if the Saturday DJ is better, but I don't think I would even go again to find out.

Yelp
It kinda gives speakeasy vibes as you enter through a door and head down into the bar. There's not a lot of seating if you don't have a table or grab a seat at the bar. The vibe is sexy dark in lighting with red highlights. Bartenders were cool and they did have a Dj when we went on a Friday night. Played mostly hip hop. Crowd was random lol
google avatar

Vincent D.

Yelp
A fun little club with a speakeasy vibe. Entrance is a little bit difficult to locate, but just look for a line on the side of the street where the entrance is suppose to be! Design is a little cramped, the bar is located in the center of the venue so there isn't a designated dancing space. Everyone's kind of just dancing in random places. Walking around is a little difficult. Getting drinks aren't too difficult though, and there's a free water station which is really nice. I'd come here again!

Yelp
I want to give 4 stars but let me tell you why I didn't. My service on my phone went out as soon as I walked down stairs into the underground club. There were certain areas in the club where I got cell phone service but other than that, no service. I asked the guy behind the bar if their WiFi worked and he said it was down, then attempted to connect the wifi but it didn't work. Otherwise it was free to get in with rsvp and it was a lot of ppl at this club on a Friday night, ppl in line, just overall good dancing music and a lot of people overall just in there. However it's super dark so you can't really see people's faces and I hate that but it's huge with different sections! I stayed for like 45 mins and I'm out now. I took 2 pics. Parking is scarce. Although I found parking at 11:30pm right near by. I'll give 4 stars from 3 stars! Free water too. Not bad.

Yelp
We really love this place. Discovered it for Thursday jazz nights. The music is great and the cupcakes are an interesting (and enjoyable) perk to a night of music and cocktails. Sitting at the bar is a lot of fun and Kela is a great bartender. We have had some fun and creative drinks with her two times now. However, everyone there is super attentive and creative.
google avatar

Yelp
I used to live across the street from this place and heard about it from my neighbors. My husband and I decided to check it out for Live Jazz night on Thursdays and we were pleasantly surprised! The ambiance is really fantastic, the music was great and the cocktails were superb!!! Our favorite bartender is Larry, but everyone is really great! We went another time for a 90s themed night and had a lot of fun. One thing to keep in mind is that there is no cell service since it's in the basement, but that ended up creating a more social atmosphere, which was great because no one was glued to their phones...unless we took selfies. Overall one of my favorite bars in DTLA. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
I've been here a few times and have enjoyed it immensely. The bartenders are always friendly and welcoming and the ambiance pleasant. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a chill and relaxing night out!

Yelp
Really disappointed in my visit tonight. It was my 1st time back at CC since the pandemic. Underground Jazz sessions was my fav lowkey night, I started going back when it was held on Wednesdays. Anyhoo on to 2nite, everything was DIFFERENT. I arrived at 8pm. The security guy took my ID and told me it was a 2 drink minimum 2nite. "Um when did this start", I thought, but went in anyway. Every seat except for the bar was RESERVED and it was literally 5 PEOPLE on the inside. I'm not exaggerating 5 people were sitting at the bar so why are the seats reserved? It's never been crowded on jazz night it's one of things I enjoyed about the event. Now remember I got there at 8pm? The band was nowhere in site eventhough CC flyer on IG said the music starts at 7pm. We walked out at 8:20pm and the band still wasn't on. What happened Continental Club??? Underground jazz sessions use to be the perfect lowkey chill night. Sometimes I would drink sometimes I didn't but to add a 2 drink minimum makes no sense. I completely understand that rule on club night/weekends. The whole "reserved" seating thing looked ridiculous especially when noone was in there. Feels like jazz night has gone HOLLYWOOD and it takes away from the perfect speakeasy vibe it had before. Very disappointed I don't think I'll go back.

Perla R.

Yelp
I love coming here on Thursdays for Jazz night. The vibe is more low key on this night. Fridays and Saturday's are fun as well and definitely more of a crowd. The staff here are always pleasant and welcoming. If you want an amazing drink ask for Larry (best bartender/manager ever!). Also shoutout to Isaac. I recommend this place to anyone and everyone because I love it here! Ps. They have free cupcakes during Jazz night!

Gary R.

Yelp
Wonderful basement speakeasy with a relaxed vibe - from the street, you wouldn't even know it exists! We went for the every Thursday Underground Jazz night and weren't disappointed. If you go, make sure you order the flaming Old Fashioned from Kela, who is absolutely the maestro - you're in for a show!
google avatar

Preston I.

Yelp
This is a pretty unassuming speakeasy downtown. I say unassuming because you can't actually see it from the street. It's underground, which fits in with the speakeasy vibe. I've been here several times and consistently have a positive experience. It's not that big a space, so it can get packed on weekend nights. The bartenders are excellent, and they know how to prepare a great old fashioned (don't miss out on the fire show)! You won't get any cell phone service down here, but ask one of the bartenders for the password to the free wifi. Parking can be a chore, but if you drive around long enough you can find a spot on the street. Although you might have to walk a block or two. Stop by if you want to dance with a good drink in your hand!

Jacqueline M.

Yelp
Girls free before 10pm Crowded venue Big bar right in the middle It gets stuffy and hot inside
google avatar

Meme M.

Yelp
The service at this establishments was excellent and the ambiance really set the mood for a solo Sunday night out. They do not have any food items to eat, however their was a food truck parked outside to accommodate you after a night of drinking.
google avatar

Isaac M.

Yelp
Come to this place on a Thursday between 10-12am and you'll be in for a treat. Its dimly lit atmosphere coupled with live jazz and good vibes from bartenders and crowd alike guarantee a chill, vibey' night. Plus, it's low-key, mature and doesn't get too crowded. I would definitely go again! Big ups to the bartenders creating specialty drinks on the spot!
google avatar

Jax V.

Yelp
Fell in love with this place a few years ago. Live across the street from it. The music and atmosphere is always fun and Larry really does make the most INCREDIBLE cocktails in the city. The whole staff is super friendly. We've closed this place down on more than one occasion. If your on the hunt for a mixologist- ask for Larry. Kela is also super sweet.
google avatar

Yelp
In my three years in LA, Continental Club has never failed me. This underground club transcends time by disconnecting us from cell service and leaving us with the vibes we create. Honestly, this movie scene is the best way to describe it (IYKYK how they was getting down ). Everyone just cuts loose and dances and has a blast. I will easily dance my exercise ring closed, and might even lap myself. Plus- You don't have to squeeze into a club dress, there's no bottle wars for ig stories, and IF there is a cover - it's like $10. It's pure, genuine, FUN. The DJs play pretty much only hip-hop/reggae, and I've personally witnessed some really great mixing here too. In short, I'm always down to slide here and i recommend you make your way over. Cheers to all the great times and great people. Follow me on Instagram for more recommendations @suavespots
google avatar

Isaiah C.

Yelp
Arrived late Saturday night, I found street parking near by. The energy and vibe was great. The bar was quick and easy to get a drink. There's a large area if you decide you want to dance to the music the DJ is playing. You can also get a table here as well if you wish. Overall I would return.
google avatar

Sacha S.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere here and the drinks are great. Everyone should check it when youre downtown!
google avatar

Kaitlyn K.

Yelp
Kela rules and she gave us the best service. She made our night with her incredible kindness and respect. Love our girl! Will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Martina W.

Yelp
This place is disgusting. Kelli is beyond unprofessional and aggressive. A friend and I got told that we have to pay $20 to sit down. We told her we would finish our drinks, pay our tab, then leave. There are two sides to every story, but a professional should never get in, or put their hands in, a customer's face and use an aggressive, disrespectful tone.m when they weren't met with that energy.
google avatar

Steph S.

Yelp
Guys go with a date!!! Single people, go in packs!!! Great music, great bar service, but standing room only! Lounge is for ages 25-35
google avatar

Brittany H.

Yelp
Haven't been to this place in a while.. drinks are delicious and music was so good! And for a Wednesday night that's great - so hard to find! Now if I didn't come in my work clothes I would've been breaking it down a little bit more but all good I had a great time!
google avatar

Noé G.

Yelp
Kela is a great bartender and makes amazing drinks, loved the speakeasy atmosphere with live jazz

Yelp
Don't go to The Continental Club. My friends and I used to love coming here. On Saturday 12/3/22 we went there, and my friend was physically assaulted by security. She was not belligerent, she was like everyone, having a good time, and security targeted her and kicked her out. People get kicked out all the time, but it is the manner in which she was taken out of the club. Two security guards pulled her by the arms and dragged her up the stairs. Prior to her being dragged, we were asking why she was being singled out when there were so many others who were drunk. When the rest of our friends went outside to console her, we also asked why they were so forceful with her and the security guard was dismissive and mocking us. Not the way to treat women, or anyone. Including a picture of her bruises from the night due to the security guards and the picture of the security guard who was mocking us and who was one of the security guards who did this. Do not go here.
google avatar

Jose U.

Yelp
Try the old fashion! They really put on a show! Open Wednesday-Saturday and each day is a different vibe. Love coming here!

Andria A.

Yelp
The service from Kela was PHENOMENAL! I felt so welcomed, very very taken care of. She made of the best cocktails I've EVER HAD! The decor made for perfect ambiance for a club that plays live jazz. Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Samm L.

Yelp
This place doesn't check vaccine cards or negative test results. So guess who got COVID for her birthday from this place?! AND IM FULLY VACCINATED! Thank you so much for not being safe and letting others walking around freely and get others infected. I love being in the hospital while all my friends and family text me "goodluck" or "hope u have a speedy recovery". How are you going to let the club get THAT packed where we are shoulder to shoulder WITHOUT a mask???? Along with the fact that it's INDOORS!?!?! Come on now? This place isn't prepared for COVID just be aware if you plan on coming here. Be aware that it seems they don't have a limit of how many people they let in either. I went on Friday Sept 3rd 2021. During a hip-hop night

Jacqueline B.

Yelp
A group of my friends and I who wanted to check out their jazz night instead we were met with It's a "private event" which felt like total BS and discrimination quite frankly. I was excited to check out this location given how close it is to my home but never again will I ever try to go given the discrimination encountered and the following statement of "private event". The bouncer was antagonizing, and basically ridiculing us for being Hispanic and being proud of that culture. I wish I had recorded the incident. But I will definitely be amplifying what occurred last night. So FYI to the supportive community.
google avatar

Jon W.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I decided to go to The Continental Saturday 6/25 for Sudaamericana. To preface, we are a not-bad looking Asian American couple with a good sense of style. When we went to the front door, the bouncer stopped us in front of the line and said that there was a dress code what we were violating. My girlfriend was wearing jeans, top and heels. I was wearing jeans, high fashion t-shirt and nice pair of sneakers. The bouncer told me to look around, and all I saw were people in basic t shirts, jeans and common sneakers. The guy standing behind me was wearing SHORTS. I called this guy out and asked him to point out what the difference was between what I was wearing and the others, his actual words were, "Uh, uh...your shoes." Yes he actually stuttered I'm not making this up. I was wearing a pair of high fashion sneakers while people were wearing chucks. TBH we were overdressed compared to the crowd. Funny thing is, I've been to this place many times pre-pandemic and was always able to get in. What was the main difference this time around? We were the only Asian couple standing in line amongst an all white crowd. Apparently their post-COVID policy was to hire some racist door staff, a mid-aged stocky white male. Listen, if you want to be racially profiled, this is the spot for you. If you're a proud minority like me, do NOT spend a penny in this establishment. There are way better places to hang out in DTLA besides this one.
google avatar

Garen A.

Yelp
I have to say the Continental Club isn't the place to go if you're looking for a quiet night out, but if you're looking for a spot with good music and dancing, then it's a great option. Some of the great things about this place is how big the reserved areas are. Great for a birthday/event because you can get a lot of people into one space. I also like how the dress code is pretty lax... there are definitely people dressed up, but then also people in sneakers and t-shirts. Drinks here are ok. I like the giant punch bowls they have, but otherwise it's pretty standard. Again... being a club... this place is loud and the dance floor can get crowded, so just keep that in mind when going! Stay Cheerful ;)

James B.

Yelp
Love the continental club esp Wednesday nights. Music is great. Vibe is right. Definitely a good time !!!

Jorge M.

Yelp
You're in downtown LA on fourth Street. There's an alley. There's a door. You go down some steps and step into a funky, underground lounge. The cocktails are amazing, the music is great and Larry is always the best bartender. Tell the bartenders what you like and ask for a keeper's choice. Music is different and great every night. My personal favorite is Thursdays for jazz and cupcakes provided by big man bakes next-door. Stop by, you're in for a treat and lots of fun.

Christina P.

Yelp
Love this place! Larry is the absolute best bar tender! His cocktails are amazing! We had so much fun!!!

Melanie B.

Yelp
It's my favorite place to go for a drinks and dancing. Tell me about your bartender bartender makes incredible tasting drinks. Thursday night cupcakes and Jazz makes a much fun weekday outing. And the vibe is sexy.

Nico C.

Yelp
Amazing drinks, Thursday's are jazz nights and cupcakes, the service is top notch and the bartenders are extremely knowledgeable in their craft and don't forget to request for keepers choice of the night, although a good ol' fashion is always welcomed. Ambience is fantastic, with great lighting and art. If you go into the men's room there are nice surprises.

Quenia L.

Yelp
This place has good ambience, I love the drinks. Larry and Chris are great!! I recommend this place 100%

Kirt B.

Yelp
Wonderful to get there early and talk with Larry over the cocktail menu. He recommend the El Conde, I can't remember what was in it but he spoke with great detail and it couldn't have been better. The place filled quickly and turned into a full blown dance party! Thanks Larry!

Robert A.

Yelp
It's a fantastic spot to come dance and have good cocktails. The bartenders are all great and always on point.
google avatar

Christo G.

Yelp
Great cocktails, these guys can make you an amazing custom craft cocktail on the spot or recommend a classic drink and they have this amazing Flaming Old Fashioned

Yelp
The Continental Club is so dope, the bar service and security staff was awesome, especially the host - Kelsi. Very nice gentleman! I would highly recommend.
google avatar

Amber H.

Yelp
I stumbled across this downtown hidden gem after dinning out in the area. The Doorman / Host - Kelsi vibe and friendliness is what really drew me in and like he said once inside I wasn't disappointed. I received awesome service from the moment before I walked in from Kelsi, the bartenders and even the bar security. If you're in the area I definitely suggest you check out The Continental Club if you're looking to have a good time at a place that provides a dope vibe and atmosphere.
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
I came here for a meetup gathering. Parking was okay, I parked at this $6 flat rate indoor garage across the street. I don't know how anybody expects new people to find this place because there's no easy to see sign and the entrance is literally a prison gate with a door in it. Once you get pass the bouncer who checks your ID, you go through this mini short alleyway and down this emergency exit looking door that leads to some shady concrete stairs and everything gets darker the further you get in since it's on the basement level. (I told my friend to run if I get stabbed, especially since many phones lose signal once you get down there.) Once in the club that does look very posh with it's mini couch areas, red walls and bar island that's in the center of the room, you notice how dark it is. And they keep it dark on purpose because I saw a waitress accidentally turn on the lights like a normal place. It's like if someone gave me a business card to read, I wouldn't be able to do it without a flashlight kind of dark, which is annoying if you're there to socialize. It's also very small, like fit 50 people comfortably small. Bars/clubs are loud and I get it, but when nobody is dancing and are just standing around talking, that doesn't mean the DJ should crank up the music so loud you can't even hear the people next to you yell. Literally, 10 people left immediately once the DJ started and 2 people out of like 50 were actually trying to dance. I definitely left soon after. DJ needs to feel the room better. Music wasn't even good. It was kind of obnoxious. I think a classier jazz playlist would fit the place better and let people talk. Furthermore, the reviews below were not kidding. THE CARPET FLOOR WAS STICKY. LIKE SPILLED JUICE/MELTED ICE CREAM STICKY. It was disgusting and I was talking with people about it. According to my mini-survey, it looked like all shoes except for tennis shoes were affected. Furthermore, the little table areas were also all sticky with spilled beer or something. Like they couldn't be bothered to wipe the little tables before opening? Anyway, I left two stars because at least the bathrooms were clean and the staff was nice. Always coming by to pick up drinks or take empty glasses. Overall, if you're looking for a smaller, "upscale" club that requires a dressy dress code, this is your place. Just be warned you can't talk to each other while you're glued to the sticky floor.

Yelp
This place is pretty dope. The bar service feels personal like you can get to know each other. And I always feel safe coming here. Look out and ask for Larry (bar) and the man working the front ( Kelsi). Pretty sure that's their name
